New software, New drone, New cameras. A lot to learn about all I have going on but here is my latest day.
I am posting this in response to a few negative posts I have seen. By the way, my channel, my rules. I will remove them when I see them so you might as well not waste your time. Give me a thumbs down if you don't like this video, or any of the other videos and leave my channel. That is the best way to vote here.

Great video, I’m impressed. Most guys don’t tell the truth on ground speed. I make a living with a Maule and a cub and I’m always touching down in the high 40’s in a working environment loaded. At altitude much higher. Appreciate the honest prospective greg. Keep them coming.

So true. In this age of everyone thinking a Cub is a helicopter it is refreshing to hear someone telling it how it is.
Why are you not doing Slats on this cub? Do Slats and the bigger P flaps work good together?
Slats only work at high angles of attack, you need to be able to see where you are going landing off airport around crap on the ground. If it is on the front of the wing= high angle of attack, back of wing = flatter deck angle, better visibility.

Awesome video that was some amazing flying. I hand prop my Luscombe out of necessity as well and know how much of a pain in the ass it can be when I flood it accidentally!

Awesome videos man. Great to see new stuff. Been a fan since the first clip of BRLP I saw in the Northern Lights Avionics shop at Merrill field in Anchorage. This was back in 2012, just starting my private certificate. Now I’m early down the rabbit hole with 2 Cessna 120s and a Mooney M20E. I have learned to love and respect the back country in the 120s. I have to be very careful and picky about where I choose to take the little birds. They are cheap and capable enough to get great experience in, though. I am forced to pay close attention to energy management with the stock C-85. Perhaps one day I’ll build up a cub or something. Until then, I’ll enjoy journey with what I have! Cheers!

I'm Jealous Greg, the RWD cars get put away around here usually at the end of October. We currently have a foot of snow on the ground, another snowstorm blowing in today (couldn't fly this morning due to winds) and trucks on the ice behind my house with no better weather in sight. I think it may be time to ditch Wisconsin. Do you guys usually have good flying weather most of the year, or did you just happen to have a nice day? As always, great content, and I enjoy your videos.

Bro. I would use the screen record feature that iPads come with...and have a decent aviation app goin....that would show a lot more than just your speed .. and it’s a free easy way to show use some cool stats.....just an idea...love your channel. Like the wAy you fly.! My dad owned a scout in the 1990s. He would fly us to some kool places and just had a great time as a little kid in wasilla ,AK ..he took no risks tho ,by the book type of pilot..he had a state job and flying was just a hobby ,,but I like your style. Kinda a risk taker but on the safer side ....thanks for sharing I look forward to more !

I've been thinking adding angle of incidence on my red slatted Cub. What are the main goals and effects? Do you think it would be worth it?? Thanks again, and awesome footage
The angle of incidence is a visual thing, the airplane will fly at a higher angle of attack but where it is set stock you can't see as well. Really your wing is just closer to a stall with the same sight picture. If you change it too much you will run out of trim without changing the horizontal pivot point. The 1/2" change in angle of incidence that I am talking about amounts to about 1 degree of change so it is not going to be mind shattering. The proper way is to build it into the fuselage and include the changes to horizontal stabilizer. You can then make more major changes but the down side to it is, you can get the airplane very close to a stall with good visibility. That is where the slats you are using I think would benefit.

48mph at touchdown how on earth are you getting stopped? I'm on 850x6's so I'd assume the big wheels and big tires help with that quite a bit? I realize my braking isn't as efficient as yours, just curious about the big tires and the differences they make from someone who actually knows. Excited to see the progression of the wing mods.
All brakes without nosing it over, tires probably help a lot big big foot print

How do you deal with wires that may be in places on the river?
No wires on this river, I did fly over a few fly fisherman that day. I think they are fishing for big Dolly Varden. I have tried without success, need to go with someone that knows what they are doing.

Just curious Greg .. have all your bush planes been carburated or injected ? Does it matter ? Or is it mostly the way I do things , that is its whatever came with what I happen to buy lol
All my airplanes have been carbureted except the current Bushwacker 2.0
After flying Bushwacker 2.0 for moose season and around 400 hours I am not really sure it matters. If you want to hand prop it yes but otherwise I would say probably not much. It always started with no issues once you figure out the magic steps for your aircraft.

Last year my neighbor was complaining about his Lang tail wheel on his PA 15 so I told him I had a rebuilt Scott 3200 that I would sell him and help him install I could not believe how heavy the tail
I ended up hurting my shoulder while trying to lift up the tail on his PA 15 then I ended up really screwing up my shoulder prop starting his airplane since it does not have any electrical on it either it took nine months for my shoulder to get in shape again. So I think I’ll stick with a starter
Your history looks parallel to mine except for motorcycles that I started after go carts. Plus I’m in a cabin on a homestead with cow field shared strip. The 71’ LT1 was my favorite vette’. I almost traded a 71’ FJ40, that I put a 425 Olds in, for the vette with a 427 and tock crusher 4 speed! Ended up with 4 seat razor, 73’ CJ5 with 304 and a Kitfox4 b. All in a cabin in the Olympics on the north end of the Penninsula looking across to Canada! Love those videos and wish I had enough hours in to use my bush plane as designed. I only have about 40 hr in.

P.S. I see you turned your prop backwards to clear the engine towards the end of the video. I'm not a mechanic nor an expert on the subject - but I don't think you're supposed to do that if you have a dry vaccuum pump? you can break the veins or something. google "why not to turn prop backwards"
So...change the incidence, better flaps, and a lightweight starter and lithium battery...

My 2CW, I hot start as follows on my O-320 160hp. One full pump on the throttle, Mixture in Idle Cut Off, make sure the mags are OFF, pull through 4 blades, set a little throttle, then LH mag on, hand swing, usually starts straight away, as soon as it starts, reach in and push the mixture in before it dies (4 or 5 seconds) Added safety feature too with the Mixture in ICO, if it was to get away when it starts, it will die after a second or two
Liked and subscribed. Soloed in Champ when I was sixteen in 1971. Instructor allowed me to go to airport and fly if my mom a pilot private pilot said it was OK. Then would hand prop plane, remove chalks and fly. Landing check list included dragging runway to check that neighbor's cows had not escaped.

Greg, have a look at Olibuilt's video the speed on display is a setting in the GoPro from what I understand. Great video
Enjoyed the video on another note, are you using Davinci Resolve to edit by any chance? The quality of the water and stones is very pixelated. Same for the reflection under you fuselage. Really does a disservice to your new cameras. This seems to be a trend with aviation videos and poor H264/5 output of Davinci. It struggles with moving water, stones etc. I did find a workaround though so I'm just making the assumption you using DR.
Notice how on your take offs there's loads of detail and the moment you move detail lost and is a blocky mess. This is not your cameras.
FCP X I am running it in H264 because I have a slow upload connection. I also am only shooting in 1080 for the same reason. It could be better but it would take days and days to upload. I am DSL out in the country with only 1 option. I am not sure what I can do with what I have, I also may not be doing it correct for all I know....
I can't even watch it in HD where I live are you sure you can where you live. When I play the export on Quicktime it looks awesome on my new 27" Imac . Which is the file I am uploading.
@@mauleguy No problem, the issue isn't h264 it's more the motion estimation of h264 codec. Ie you should be able to tweak it. Whether I use Sony Vegas, Final Cut or Davinci I export a large lossless file, then run it through handbrake or ffmpeg. In the end you can end up with a really really small file with superb quality. I was watching this in FHD on my TV. I'll download your highest quality versions in the morning (Africa tz) and check on my PC and verify. Thanks for replying. This way I can verify whether it's TH-cam or the source ;).

I dunno if increasing wing incidence will help,much considering the big tires, and the 3's gear, your squat angle is pretty high and you can pull a pretty high aoa as is. Now, a Fowler type flap mod and vg's would do a heap though. Perhaps take the tapered bow out of the wing tips with a couple extra ribs, leaving it truncated or finishing with Hoerner's. Your a Maule guy, not a cub dude. Hope to see you build another Maule one day, and do a video doc on it. that would be one hell of an interesting video. Bushwacker was one hell of a bird.

The drone shots like you say are very helpful in getting a better perspective of what all is going on, and they look like fun to fly also. I appreciate you stating the temp and the field elevation, if it's high and hot, brag about it, if cool and at sea level, fess up!

Great video Greg! Curious why you don’t add a lightweight starter? I know that aircraft with no electrical system and the old save weight part but since you have electrics I was just curious. I know your system is more reliable as well 😂 . Any other reason I’m missing?

Like I said I was going to test it. The theory is all parts of the wing produce equal lift now at same attitude. I checked my wing yesterday and it was set to almost zero already, I thought I had but could not remember for sure. It is now zero as I took out the slight amount that was there. This could become a big discussion and I would suggest looking to the internet for more answers if interested. There are a lot of people out there that are smarter and better at putting things in writing then me. Lots of information on Supercub.org if you type in search function. You are welcome and glad you are enjoying them!

Nope, USA 35B is the only airfoil on cub type airplane I have flown.

I noticed when you take off you use partial flaps and right near lift off you go to full flaps. Is that so you can gain forward speed?

You are probably correct for what I want, but it is the most expensive. I am actually interested in making each change and seeing the result. I knew from the start that this was going to be a Super Cub that landed at 41-42 at sea level light without changing anything. Having flown other light weight Cubs. I have a couple friends telling me there cubs land at 34 mph with a stock wing and the mods I am talking about doing. I actually am skeptical of that number. My last cub was a big wing with 110" long double slotted flaps at it landed at 37 no wind so we will see.
Must be a blast hammering the throttle on that ZO6. My old C4 is still a lot of fun. The flying videos are off the hook as usual. I think I'm really doing something when I make it to Johnson Creek. Love the drone shots, thanks for the video.

@@mauleguy Greg has anyone fitted an O-320 B1A to a cub? Wondering what the added effect of the VP prop would be. Granted its a bit heavier but surely with today's Carbon props around the advantage of the fine pitch must outway the slight weight gain??

Hi Greg, inspiring video! Regarding your plan, do you ever consider the in-line thrust mod? Also curious do you have an AH in the panel? Any thoughts on including one or not? Much thanks!
I have had Thrustline mod on my last two cubs. The first one it was built into the engine mount which made it not noticeable in sight picture (dropped engine 2", carbon cub engine mount) the other was not dropped and I hated the visibility over the nose. Not sure what AH is, I am guessing angle attack finder of some sort. Worthless for me, I don't need it. I know what the airplane is doing by how I feel in the seat of my pants also sight picture over the nose.

Not at all really, if you take Dihedral out the airplane becomes less stable. Washout is for wing to stall in a progressive way. Don't stall and you don't have an issue.

Why always hand prop?
My guess is the back country calls for simplicity.
I will assume you don't realize there is no starter on this airplane. I will give the answer based on that. You can take a little more then 10 pounds off the nose by not having a starter. On a Cub it is 10 pounds in the correct place to loose 10. It use to be a lot more, but with light weight starters and earth X battery it is not as big of weight savings as it use to be.
I have a full electrical system just less the required equipment to start. I use an Earth X battery that would start the airplane so I don't save any weight there.
