Just scrolled through a couple pages of the comments here and it makes me sad. I loved The Band and everything they stood for. Their music was like evergreens; timeless and universal. I know all about the rift over the rights to the music, and I wish to hell I'd never heard about it. It takes away from the beautiful music they made and the wonderful memories they gave me all those years ago. I hope Levon found it in his heart to forgive at the end; that would jibe with the image I have had of him for 40+ years as a great musician and an even better man.
I agree, it was sad & not necessary. I think Levon was being a bit unfair. It was sa he & Rik got pulled in by the big dope & that Richard s demons got the better of him. Eric Clapton has always been a great admirer of Robbie & reverse. They are friends & respect each other s skills.
the band, last waltz le plus grand concert jamais realisé a lépoque avec robbie robertson eric clapton bob dylan et beaucoup d'autre celebre chanteurs et chanteuses bravo bravo bravo..
I imagine how nostalgic they might have been doing that , knowing 37 years before they were already doing this song with all the " dear friends " alias rick, richards and levon .... Damn time is flying .
My generation, Boomers, are all leaving the Planet now, I was born in 1948, and what we are leaving behind is comparable to Mozart, Beethoven and other Classic Musicians in their category...Hail hail, Rock N Roll..
On the contrary to a lot your opinions, I think Robbie sounds great and the only problem is his voice is buried to low in the mix in this video, a touching tribute
OMG frontrowdave1 MAJOR GRATITUDE for this! This is one of my all-time favorite songs & Robbie Robertson & Eric Clapton!!! WOW WOW WOW! & forget about all the idiots venting their idiocy in the comments! May they be released as well. Peace & Love
I said i saw 160 dylan shows, i never said i needed a ticket to get in .It is how you carry yourself and who you know that makes those backstage doors open.
If you adore this song, and somehow (it's very possible, that's why I'd hate anyone deny themselves) to miss hearing Jerry Garcia Band do this song, opinions will differ of course, but for me... I'd say go for a 1991 show, the Garcia Live series and others will be a good place for anyone, no matter how little you're familliar with Jerry Garcia Band (he covers a lot more The Band songs, and of course, OWNS Dylan songs... just as he did with Grateful Dead, but...JGB is him having often more fun, and...ton of soul, ton of work with great artists, and you get everything from traditional mountain music to Jimmy Cliff, to "Never Can Tell", "Second that Emotion" ... and the Dylan songs he owns, like Tangled up in Blue. Grateful Dead , at that same period, 90, 91... there's the best Baby Blues, and 89 for Desolation Row, they aren't as debatable as most, and not up to personal preference to such a high degree as saying that about most songs Grateful Dead performed. I figured there are likely some Dylan/The Band loving people who haven't heard Garcia (and the Grateful Dead, and Jerry Garcia Band, entire) do them such justice. "The Night they Tore Ol Dixie Down" being another he did often, and will go from a slow soulful version (as if it's not soulful already) to an even more slowed down , but beautiful bunch of renditions. Tons to find/hear/watch there... I'd hate anyone to miss it, especially if you're old and loved the stuff for decades and managed to miss JGB, or miss recordings that were up your alley in all ways... which is entirely possible. I didn't touch JGB until many years after I was finally sold on Grateful Dead, which came far too late...
My wife was reading your foolish entries and even she laughed at what you have to say Dixie and the weight most popular? Where did you come up with them as most popular? Read the book Across the great divide and get back to me and if you can't read the big words sound them out.How often have you seen the band?
Rick Danko and his buddy i cannot spell the dudes name who blows the harp but they went on a small tour playing in rundown bars in which levon would show up at but not play and levon was very approachable and friendly .I may have spoke to levon 1on 1 about 6 or 7 times and during 1 of them he brought up robbie for about 2 minutes but you could feel he did not have love 4 robbie. As far as what larry said about levon that may be true but do you think larry brought up levons and robbies falling out
Bro it is time to move on and bore someone else. The only reason i am responding is we are in a holding pattern and can't land at the maui airport and again man give it up. I am gonna hang on the beach in kona for a week or so.And you can keep on boring someone just as long as it is not me.So go and live your menial life and i will stay on kona and do what these farmers over here do best grow the best bud on the planet and chill for a couple weeks.
What kind of friend would you be if your friend fell on some bad actually real bad times [the barn burning to the ground] and much worse cancer and you have the means to help but you don't help. That sure as hell is not a friend. WHY DON'T YOU GIVE FRIENDS MONEY IN THEIR TIME OF NEED? How can you call yourself a friend. That is enough this warm kona sun calls me and my friend and his family. They came with us on my dime, how could i have them come and see us and not foot the bill. That's not me.
RIP Richard, Rick and Leon saw The Band back in 69 and 70 when all this was fresh, what a time. The drummer on this is plain awful, the track would have been much better without him.
considering the amount of talent on that stage, this is a very bland and uninspiring version of this tune, IMO. not only is it sung poorly, but the deft, tasty licks Robbie exhibited playing this on the last Waltz are replaced by an overloud, over aggressive, and poorly flowing guitar line. I watched the entire thing hoping Clapton was going to come to the rescue, but to no avail. unfortunate, because as I said, the performance at the last waltz that these two were a part of was legendary. not sure what happened here.
If robbie was so concerned about levon why didn't he stay in touch with him and call and talk and maybe even take care of levons medical bills after all robbie did steal it anyway. Trust me when someone is that close to passing on words and conversation really does not happen. Whatever he supposedly said to levon was only a front to make himself feel better.I am pretty sure jaime was in new york already and didn't make a special trip.He knew of levons debts and did nothing to his bff,
Please anything but a thumbs down i can't live with such a thing i must go into seclusion.I do apoligize about the money comment. As far as knowing larry i would say after 160 dylan shows as well as phil and friends shows plus 40 plus rambles i got an idea who larry is.As far as levon being the only one to complain about robbie that is not true. Did you ever think the people you mention didn't want to talk about or bring up the feud? Levon was very easy to talk to depending on where you saw him
jxhinoj He screwed them out of $$$$ since he owned the publishing rights. It is what it is but don't call people 'your friends' when you hogged all the money. Watch Levon's documentary, he mentions the bitterness. Richard put this song in a place no mortal can go let along Kermit. Listen to Robbie destroy Chrstmas Must Be Tonight that Rick made immortal.
+Rick B You're the one bringing up race, ace. I respect his songwriting and guitar playing skills....as a singer he sucks, you could probably sing better and as a person, hmmm?
+Pat Brennan No we only play about 10 Band songs in my band. Plus I've been playing guitar and singing lead for about 45 years. Performing/teaching and writing Fakebooks...yeah I don't have a clue.
+Rick B 1st everyone in the band is dead except Garth, who's kinda brain dead. 2nd. You'd never know of you idol Robbie without the other members. He still be in Canada selling trinkets in some Indian reservation shop. The Night They Drove Dixie wasn't co-written by Levon, really?
Rest in peace Richie and Levon. Luv Robbie Robertson and the Band, ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!

I preferred JGB to the Dead in those years (especially post Brent). Smaller venues, band on fire, good times.
Japp! Det här var riktigt trist.
Hey!
Awesome to know you were so close to know there finances...Can you send me an autograph?
Bill Avis?
Is Robbie wearing a piece?

fuck Dave .so awesome thx
Why do you keep talking about your sweaty trip to Maui?
The best version of the song is with Mary Travers Joni Mitchell and Cass Elliot.
If makes me cry every time.....
18 calendar years in federal prison for marijuana importation. Nothing else needs to be said
This is a great song, but the constantly shifting camera angles an bad sound mix ruin it.

You re rambling on , - about what exactly???
Jimmy LaFave does a much better version...Check him out
Clapton looks confused
Helm is dead, I Know!!
I don't think you know what the word popular means.
There's a reason they used to turn off his microphone when The Band played live...

With people like the ones who worship on saturday, money is their religion.
Learn to hold a camera, please. pjs-128
Gee, thanks...LOL...
I know he was knocking on a bit , but Robbie's guitar playing has gone down the shitter.....such a shame.....a thin shadow of his former brilliance
Bubbacat54 he was never that good
mark stitzer on this song he was
He s in his 70 s ffs!! & not doing gigs like Clapton does. He RR can still pluck a mean string or two though👍

The fact that robbies dad was jewish robbie has some of that in his dna whether his dad split when he was 5 or 55.
This is why the band use to turn off his mike.

You mean if he wasn t stoned out of his brains?
Kermit the Frog shouldn't sing, esp a song Richard made immortal.
bday55 Right, But he did say it was for his dear deceased friends (Richard,Rick and Levon),
jxhinoj He screwed them out of $$$$ since he owned the publishing rights. It is what it is but don't call people 'your friends' when you hogged

He could write but please don't sing
He never professed to be a singer, he joined in a chorus with the 3 main Band singers. He knew he wasn t a singer
he left and ruined THE BAND and hASNT DONE Anything good since....
