    He wanted to rule with respect. Unfortunately, the Book of Boba Fett didn't rule. It was a frustrating mess. And the worst part is, there was a character within the show who could have saved it.

      As a stand alone story 3/10
      As a SW story 6/10
      My take is that BoBF was a corporate excercise rather than an artistic one. The inclusion of BF in Mando basically forced the hand to get this to screen asap while the fire was still hot. Unfortunately what was delivered is the result there of.
      The structure of the narrative made no sense and the story told did not stay true to the known character. The flashbacks were poorly used, and could of been more coherent had they also touched on the time spent as a bounty hunter (alone and ok). To juxtapose against the PTSD of apparently short time in the Sarlaac pit (alone and not ok). And again the time spent with the Tuskens (alone/included and not ok/ok).

    If it was called the book of tattooine it could be a collection of stories focusing on different characters that all tie together into a stronger narrative. That way we could have mando, boba, and cobb all be the stars of certain episodes without having to stick in one.

      This is the best alternate idea I heard so far. Start with 1 Boba flashback episode (Tuskens, meeting Fennec), then the Mandalorian episode (which is now ep5 and leave Grogu/Luke for later, 'I got to visit a little friend' is cliffhanger for S3), then a Cobb Vanth episode where we meet the Pykes + Bane for the first time, then Boba current timeline episode (with the Mayor/Hutts + rancor) then a villian story about Cad Bane/Pykes to build up tension, then the finale. Perfectly spread out in 6 chapters. Let some survived Tuskens return and involve Mando's N1 starfighter in the finale and literally everything is connected in a nice bow.

      @jinxthatsme2317 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Yeah. The first Red Dead Redemption game was more or less how I pictured the "The Book of Boba Fett."
      In Red Dead Redemption, John Marston is a retired outlaw turned bounty hunter that is forced to track down the former friends of his old gang in order to be granted his, and his family’s freedom.
      He is shown to still possess the violent ideals of his former leader and mentor, but as the story progresses, he begins to develop a greater sense of morality and honor while still maintaining his gruff outward persona.
      And the game’s story doesn’t pretend that John was never an outlaw either. John still slips up from time to time and has violent outbursts to show that he still needs to work on himself. People also hold him accountable for the atrocities he committed in the past, and not everyone is willing to forgive him for the people he’s murdered.
      So, having said that, I expected "The Book of Boba Fett" to show us that the people of Tatooine despise and fear him for working with the empire. I expected to see the remnants of Jabba and Bib Fortuna’s gang retaliate against Boba, leading to the conflict of the show.
      Most of all, I expected Boba’s redemption to be more gradual like John Marston’s in order to illustrate that redemption is possible, but requires hard work and self control (something Boba was shown to have little of in the OG trilogy).

    Instead of unceremoniously killing Boba's Tusken friends, they could have him building his new empire by making an alliance with the people of Mos Espa and the Tuskens, which would give him a natural advantage over all organizations on Tatooine. To make another Dune comparison, he could rule not with fear but with respect and "desert power." I feel like that's the kind of ideology they want us to read from him now.

    • @Dinoslay
      @Dinoslay 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      They needed an excuse to make him hunt down his armor. If his Tusken tribe had survived there would be no need for that. The plot had to be written to address Boba’s antagonist origins while still making him an anti-hero in a quest of revenge and, as his supposed redemption story, it fell short and turned out rather disjointed with the addition of the other characters.

    • @Tim3.14
      @Tim3.14 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It just felt like they started things and didn't follow up. First with the "I want to rule with respect" thing, which mostly amounted to "I'll hire some people who previously caused trouble for me, and I won't make anyone carry me." And then with the Tuskens. It seemed like they might be going somewhere with the Tusken story, then suddenly they're all dead. They killed them off screen, and Boba didn't even get to be the one to get revenge on their real killers!

    This show should have focused on three characters:
    Cad Bane - who Boba was
    Cobb Vanth - who Boba could be
    Boba Fett - A flawed & conflicted man, finding his place
    Imagine a Boba Fett who tries to be a ‘better crime boss’ only to come into conflict with Cobb Vanth. And having to deal the fact he’s still a criminal and not the BEST person to protect the people. Maybe he even contemplates giving the armor back and putting Cobb in charge.
    Until, Cad Bane shows up. Now there’s a threat that Cobb’s ‘small town sherif with a heart of gold’ can’t handle and Boba’s way of doing things is needed.
    Maybe Boba navigates the crime world well enough to turn the Hutts against the Pikes. Something Cobb couldn’t do.

    Maul? I don't wanna spoil anything in other SW stories but uhh Maul is super dead. Like, actually confirmed "we watch the light leave his eyes" type of dead.
    The problem with Boba Fett is that 80% of his arc happens off-screen inside the Sarlacc pit.
    He is a changed, much more merciful, and arguably naive man in the very first flashback, before any meaningful interactions with the Tuskens.
    And then, from his escape from the Sarlacc to his appearance in The Mandalorian, about 5 years pass. Again, that's a lot of character development happening totally off-screen.
    The most baffling thing is Disney already made a Boba Fett show, but they wisely made a new character to play ""Boba Fett"" so they didn't have to adhere to the established character or expectations that come with that name. They called it The Mandalorian.

    I was talking to my brother about the show, and felt that they completely fell flat on the whole "Crime boss" aspect of the show and Boba's character. I remarked that they could've learned a thing or two about developing a likeable outlaw climbing up the criminal world from show Justified (which funny enough starred Timothy Olyphant as a US Marshall), particularly the character Boyd Crowder. A intelligent, charismatic, ruthless, witty criminal who snakes his way up to the top of the criminal underworld in Kentucky. Could have taken some pointers and make Boba Fett similar on Tattooine. But instead they try and make him the "crime boss" with a heart of gold and it just doesn't work.

Maybe mildly telegraph it with people saying things like "I haven't seen Boba Fett for years, last I heard he was killed by a rancor in the desert" - and then he just shows up riding the rancor like a boss.

    I wouldn't say the show was "about the wrong guy" per se but I do agree that they treated Boba Fett like a "precious character" as stated in this video.
    It's not that Boba Fett couldn't have been awesome, it's just that they wrote him to be so ineffectual(especiallyin the first 3 episodes). You can't write a feudal lord/ crime boss wanting to "rule with respect" and then allow people to not just disrespect them but try to have them straight up murdered.
    What ruling with respect looks like for someone in Boba Fetts position is telling your subjects "Look I'm not my predecessor. I'm not looking to put you in the poor house. I'm not Jabba. Im giving everyone a substantial break on the amount I expect you to pay in tribute. If legitimately your moisture farm isn't yielding so well or your cantina is struggling we can work out an extension or maybe even a loan. If someone is hassling you I can help because thats what paying protection money means. You're protected from me but ill also protect you from others. However if you refuse to come to me in person, if you flat refuse to pay tribute, if you turn around and demand tribute FROM ME, and certainly if you try and have me killed then you are going to get a response by way of a measured show of force appropriate to your offense."
    And if you were to keep that character true to their word their situation is much one believable. And you can have your right hand man character like Fennic tell them "look boss we've had to put some people in their place and we've been coming out on top for the most part. You and I can handle ourselves, the Gamoreans aren't bad, but one of these times we are going to walk into a situation that's too much for us unless we get some more muscle."
    And the conflict would work alot better because you don't have your title character who's supposed to be this tough guy letting himself get walked on. He's actually doing stuff.

    They took the most vile, cunning, and badass villains from Star Wars and made him a big softy-with zero autonomy of his own. An exploration of a grey anti-hero had me excited. But this show as mostly mediocre. I agree, the Cobb Vanth v Cad Bane standoff was the best moment of the show. The Boba v Bane standoff didn't have the tension or impact it should've had. Now my 30+ year head cannon of Boba is all outta wack. I need to read some Dark Horse Boba comics to cleanse the palate.

    There’s so much about this show that didn’t work. Too many plot lines are just dropped instantly for the familiar. That is one of the larger problems with Star Wars as a whole these days. They seem to refuse to do anything new, and can only show us pieces from the past that might hold nostalgia for someone.

    What you said in the beginning is exactly right - this show had issues with conflict. Every two episodes it kept changing up the conflict. Uh oh the hutts! Oh wait, no its the syndicate. Oh wait its Mandalorian episodes. Its the finale watch the main cast make poor decisions. On another note, how long was Boba staying with the Tuskens? Was it the full like 5 years after ROTJ? This show makes it feel like he was with them a very short amount of time, but also it expects us to believe that Boba staying with them completely changed his outlook on Tatooine and morality.

  • @eugeneperry8347

    I'd give this show a 2 out of 10. Ask yourself this, do you think Disney said "we have a compelling story we planned out about Boba Fett, lets make a show", or did they say "everyone loves Boba Fett, let's make a show about him. The story will work itself out."? They never established who Boba is as a character. We have no idea what his values are or why he wants to rule. We're never shown why the Pyke syndicate is supposed to be feared. The narrative structure was mind boggling and the flashback scenes had no tie in to the rest of the show. Cad Bane reveals the Pykes were behind the Tuskan deaths but that reveal doesn't change anything from that point. If the flashbacks were left out nothing about the show would've changed.

    I heard an idea I liked of Boba fett becoming a title, never bring back the original boba, Cobb keeps the armour and could have an interesting series about a guy losing his identity to the armour and the legacy that comes with it. Eg people on Taboune (spelling?) recognising and assuming it old boba and treating him as such idk. You could then even bring og boba back in in this series. Kinda makes more sense having that happen in a Boba Fett tv show rather than the mandolorian.

They just need to actually use Boba Fett as Boba Fett, a badass refuses to die bounty hunter who is the most lethal non-force using combatant in the outer rim. Instead they had him sit around for a bunch of episodes. They plotted this like a movie with one big finale fight instead of every episode is its own big adventure which is what it needed.

So now they have to somehow make a different show with almost the same character, and they didn't lean heavily enough into what makes Bobba Fett Bobba Fett like you mentioned with the strategy and the fighting ect.
    Now I've seen the premise of a Timothy Olyphant show it would have been awesome, basically "Justified" but in Star Wars.

  • @TheAntesse
    @TheAntesse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    From the look of things, the story of Cobb Vanth as leader and defender of Tatooine might be "season two" of BoBF. That stinger at the end of the last episode, the fact that Boba might very well get dragged in Mandalorian business (not the Mando, but the Mandalorian people as a whole), and the general idea that Cobb took a laser bullet for Tatooine to bring the Freetownians together for the final fight. Might not be a show but I would not be surprised to see him taking Boba's place, if not like a more legit government.
    But yeah, there were a lot of little things wrong with the show. The scale was what was off for me. It really felt like a dozen people were having a beef with a dozen people over a planet.

    Seems to me that an easy answer to this show's problem would be simple: Make Cobb Vanth the antagonist. Not the villain; but an obstacle to Fett's goals. Maybe he and Vanth start out as allies against the Syndicate with an understanding that he'll leave Freetown out of the drug trade. But after they get rid of the syndicate; something happens that makes Vanth start to consider Fett just as bad as the syndicate. Fett does something that crosses the moral event horizon in his mind. Or maybe the Spice Trade ends up effecting Freetown in spite of their deal. Either way, Cobb Vanth and Boba Fett become enemies. It ends with a showdown between the two.
    Wouldn't that be a better show?

    Or heck maybe Boba could be the main villain of The Balled of Cob Vanth. Or he could've been a secret villain the whole time. Like we think Cad Bane is working for the Pykes, but it turns out Boba hired Cad for double the price of the Pykes offered. Like Boba wants to control the Spice Trade so he creates a crisis on Tatooine to weaken the Pykes, then during the disaster it could cause the Pykes to lose a lot of money, or they have a lot of spice that needs to be sold or something, so Boba buys it or becomes the new top investor and starts taking over the spice trade. And you could use Boba a background villain in the other recurring Star Wars show where he gains more and more power as he controls more and more of the Criminal Underworld.

    Only issue with focusing on Cobb Vanth is the fact that once Mando or Boba show up they would steal the spotlight. So if they were brought into *“The Ballad of Cobb Vanth,”* their roles would have to be minor as to not take away from the main character Cobb Vanth.
    All things considered I definitely would’ve preferred a show focused on Cobb Vanth, since compared to other characters we know he isn’t fully plot armored, but vulnerable with the possibility of death.

    He’s not equipped mentally. He’s a loner. A thief. A bandit. What happened? Did he find his soul?
    A gritty western setting would have been amazing
    The bland, safe, stereotypical, Disney world comes to the forefront.

    This show confirms that Boba works best in small doses. Season 2 should be about Cobb. or an anthology show that about a different character each week.

    You made a concept for a show that is never going to come out that I want to see.

    Great video Nando. I am not the biggest Star Wars guy, but I did watch the Mandalorian, and I love Timothy Olyphant. So this would be great. I haven't watched Boba Fett, but I would watch your show!

    I am now so angry that we didn’t get “The Ballad of Cobb Vanth”

    Would the Tuskens still be a part of this series? Not in the exact same way (flashbacks, etc.) but I love the worldbuilding of the Tuskens these shows have been doing, and since Cobb and Freetown are already connected to them it makes sense for them to show up to some extent.

    As much I like the Ballad of Cobb Vanth concept, the Star Wars name has been diluted to the point where people aren't going to show up en masse just to see "New Character: A Star Wars Story" the way they have for "Star Wars: Episode N."
    "Famous Character: A Star Wars Story" can still draw audience. We'll see if I'm right with Kenobi and Lando vs Andor and Ahsoka.
