I had mini bikes at 8 years old. I miss motorcycles but always wanted to try a trials motor bike. As a mountainbiker it just makes sense
Yes, it does make a lot of sense. Maybe you could "borrow" a trials bike to get the feel of it...
After years of procrastination about getting into trails riding I am on my way -
1. I've watched Paul Brodie's Trials Riding 101 - ☑️
2. I'm keen to do it - ☑️
3. Time and costs are not a problem - ☑️
4. Health insurance is all paid up - ☑️
All that's left is to get a bike and a bunch of gear and get out there!

Do it mate it’s brilliant. Trials is pretty popular near where I live and the range of people doing it is amazing. Not many sports where an 80 yr old can compete directly against a 20yr old. Once you own a bike and kit the running costs are pretty low too. Get out there and enjoy yourself!

@OKFrax-ys2op No, is the short answer. The long answer is family commitments, including migration to another continent required, putting it on hold for a while. The desire and everything else, except time, are still there, though. In the meantime, pedal power around the Spanish mountains is keeping me smiling.

The best possible advice for newcomers to trials, is to avoid getting over biked! Bigger capacity bikes are designed to produce the sort of inertia needed for WTC going, and arent particularly user-friendly for less able riders.
Starting with a 125 or 200cc bike, will mean forward progress is much faster, as it's possible to concentrate more on riding the bike, than fighting against it.
Its not easy to find now, but pretty much the best source of info for beginner trials riders is a 1980s book, by US world trials champion, Bernie Scrieber and Len Weed "Observed Trials". It obviously features old twin-shock bikes, but the techniques are exactly if you are riding a modern bike.
I agree with what you say. I've been riding trials for 20 years, maybe 21, I can't quite remember when I started! Very happy with my TRS 280.
@@paulbrodie I was talking to Adrian Lewis of Lewisport in the US a few years back.
He was telling me about a test/try out day they had organised, when customers could try new bikes.
One guy was hogging all the large capacity bikes, and seemed to be having a hard job even staying on!
After much persuasion, Adrian managed to get him on a 125 Gas Gas. He managed to clear the practice section he had been failing every time, on the big bikes, on his first attempt!
Guy not far from me has put a 180cc pit bike motor, into a TRS he got from the UK importer, and personally I think it will work better for most riders, than with the original still fitted.
Lighter than with the 2T fitted, very cheap parts, and grips far better than 2T motors, making it much easier to ride.
@@humourless682 As you probably know, riding a trials bike is very different from riding almost any other motorcycle. Riding skills are not automatically transferred over. New techniques must be learned over time and refined.
@@paulbrodie Quite so. My point was that having a big bore machine, makes forward progress more difficult, especially for beginners.
Importers love selling the big bikes though, as many riders will fit all sorts of add-ons, to calm them down, before realising thats a waste of time and buying another new bike...........
Excellent video! I haven't rode a trials bike in 47 years, now at 67 I want to do it again! Building a BSA Alloy Clipper to do it. Thank Mitch for his camera work it's excellent too!

Well,true to form..watching this has given me a desire to add an engine! Been a cyclist for 50 years now..started young. Watching your workshop videos gave me a desire to build a bike frame. Now this! You have a quality that inspires,simply by sharing what you do and love.

Paul you're good teacher no matter what it is you're explaining. Didnt know you rode trials up until a month or so ago. I bought one and will be taking it out to Ioco for the first time riding trials ever, this coming Spring. Hope your health is rejuvenated so that I see you out there.

Used to mess about on the ridge and furrow grass fields and disused railway tracks on our Bantams in the sixties, but never did anything like this, thanks for the tips.

Great video, good skills Paul. I used to be a speedway rider that’s easy count two turn left and no brakes and gears to worry about. Trails much more technical. I’m 57 now and feel inspired to give it a go.
Thank you Ian. That would be great if you got into trials. I would suggest a modern bike, they are so much better than the Vintage trials bikes. It does take a while to learn basic trials skills. You have speedway skills but they don't transfer over. Nothing really transfers over! Let me know how it goes.

IOCO is short for Imperial Oil Corporation. They used to have a large presence in that area but all of their infrastructure is pretty much gone now.

My first bike was a trials machine with a 125cc Sachs engine and Bing carb. Can't remember the name of the (English?) company who put it all together - three initials + Engineering. My clutch control was abysmal.
Would it be SWM? I rode one a couple of years ago. Compared to our modern bikes, it was terrible. But, in the 70's they were great!
SWM doesn't ring a bell though looking at pictures, not completely dissimilar. Maybe a little more like a Dot.

Well done. I've been looking at a gasgas txt300 , it's a 2009 . I'm kinda afraid to buy it since the ktm group purchase of gasgas. Worried someday there won't be parts available
GasGas has had its' shares of ups and downs, but some of our club members are still buying the bikes. I prefer the 280. And I'm very happy with my TRS!
I'm so happy that I found you and this video. I'm 59 years old and have been riding dirt bikes off and on since 1973. I haven't been on a bike since 2015. I recently went through a very hard fought fight with throat cancer. The surgeries and recovery was about as much as I could take at 59 years old. I spent 1 month in the hospital and now I'm recovering at home. I'm weak. My legs are weak and I'm doing a lot of walking to regain strength. I'm looking at a 2023 Gas Gas TXT 250 GP trials bike at a local dealership. My wife wasn't really excited about it at first but she's coming around now as I bug her a lot about getting the bike 😅. Can you please share your personal opinion with me please? Do you think I should grab the bike and start out with just simple balance excercises like figure 8s, stuff like that? I really feel like the bike would be therapeutic both physically, emotionally and mentally for me? Watching these videos and reading forums really take my mind off the past 6 months. Thanks for this awesome video and your advice that you can share 😊
Thanks for liking our video. I think a new trials bike would be a very nice present to yourself after all you have been through. I have owned several GasGas trials bikes and they are good value. I prefer the 280s, but that is just personal preference. The 250 is very good, don't get a 300; it is too much motor for most riders. Doing 10-15 minutes at a time in your yard will get you started. Figure 8's, and full lock turns are good, and your body will tell you you are having a workout. There is nothing to modify on these bikes, they are excellent as you buy them. I wish you the very best!
Noticed your BG sensor. It would be interested to hear your journey at some point in that regard. Just took my 2002 Bruzza for a ride. Take care.

No, we all ride stock bikes. Hardly anyone changes things, the bikes are just that good. I REALLY like my bike.
Why did I expect to see you wearing a flat cap, waxed cotton belstaff jacket, woolen socks turned over the top of brown lether three buckle boots and a stride a highly modified Sherpa T a la Sammy Miller.

Where can you buy a "trials bike"? Certain motorcycle shops sell them. Not every shop, but some do. You will need to do some research!

How do you reconcile the front brake lever being on the right on a motorcycle, and on the left on a bicycle? I have transitioned from being a life-long motorcyclist to being a dedicated cyclist in retirement, and I am frustrated with the left hand front brake. I change all my bicycles to motorcycle style, but companions call me a southpaw, which I am not.
I'm so used to it that I don't even think about it. What was harder was going from my Honda street bike to my Excelsior race bike which shifted on the right with one up four down. And then back to my Honda when I wasn't racing.
For sure Dougie isn't worried but I feel you sell yourself a little short, looking good.

Can You Build an Electric Dirt bike? I have an 1992 Honda 250R with no engine, want to see become electric or a 420cc harbor fright put around motor.
Yes, I can build almost anything.. But, there has to be a good reason why. It is a LOT of work, and I already have 12 bicycles; two of which are electric, so I do not need any more. To build a bike for someone else would be very expensive, and The liability issues would keep me from sleeping at night, so I would likely decline. Do you understand??

I'm partially paraplegic since a paragliding accident in 2016 and use a wheelchair for 99% of my movement. I can stand with support and even ride small bikes up to around 100kg and pick them up when I tip over. Started riding my moped a few years ago which worked great with a few mods to the shifter and the rear brake on the handlebar and then I got a GasGas ES280 with electric start as a trail bike and doing light trials as I can't get my feet down fast enough to catch myself while standing up. I'm mostly riding around in 5th gear on the trails as I can start from a stand still in that gear, then 6th on the roads and lower gears when it gets really slow and gnarly so don't have to shift much. Going to customize it and make a larger aluminium tank and a new subframe and make a vintageish scrambler type of bike when I'm done with my Suzuki GP125 Vintage Racer build.
A trials bike on the trails reminds a lot of Downhill MTB riding which I did a lot before my accident.

I've got a fairly badly injured shoulder, is trials particularly hard on shoulders? I'm an electrician, and manage fine at work, so it's obviously not completely buggered.

Congratulations on getting your first trials bike. No, I would not say that trials is particularly hard on shoulders. Just take it real easy at first as you learn to build up your confidence...

great video from you and mitch . i don't think i will be trails riding on my bike. it's a 1978 MX-250 harley-davidson. the power band is around 9000 rpm . i could do backard somersaults on that first rock for sure . that would be the end of my trails riding !!!!!

Well done Paul and Mitch. I have not ridden motorcycles at all, but it seems to me that you are thinking about weight transfer quite a bit. Not only front to back, but also side to side. I'm 70 years old (young) and am reluctant to take up a sport that would involve falling down as part of the learning process. Thankyou for making a very well produced video that was fun to watch. You look like an expert to me!

Well well welly well.Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Pauls channel, you find the latest video and realize that clearly, Paul is better at even another thing than I am. If I had gone to Unadilla this weekend, I wouldnt have service, thus avoiding the gut punch this video installed. Very impressive Paul, all kidding aside. My buddy got two of the very few TRS bikes from the only man in Maine that gets em last year. The more than adequate size, and the beyond all reason amount of snot size. Talk about a learning curve!!! But, an absolute blast no question. Maybe we can get them to add in a class for trials at next years MX Rewind! Ill use my YZ100F haha! As usual, great stuff man!

Looks fun! I been trying to learn full lock turns on my dual sport, but I am using the front brake instead of the rear. Not sure which way is better. Here's Tim Coleman demonstrating,

I checked out Tim Coleman. Yes, you can use the front brake. I find it easier using the rear brake against the clutch. Personal preference. He really uses "outside weighting"; very easy to see. Thanks for watching!

Recently we have experienced really big event entries here in South Wales, UK, so much so we have had to start capping numbers of entries. It’s great to see the sport flourishing even if it’s a bit daunting dealing with 100 riders per event.
