Ariana was causing damage to her vocals, she wasn't singing the natural way her voice should, she was imitating artists, her new style is her true style
+Ryan Morrison Hmm, people say when she performed in Broadway that that was her natural voice and many fans now say that she sings the way she does now because she was told to during Victorious as they preferred that higher voice she does... So which is it to be? Everybody speculates and makes up excuses or comes up with these statements but with no proof. The fact is though, her technique itself was better (not great) a few years ago... Today, she's just average and it does sound like she puts on the lighter voice a bit too much, hence why she often sounds so off and inaudible or incomprehensible when trying to enunciate, but idk.
euroc22 If you want to disagree with me, it'd be better to actually elaborate on why. Otherwise it comes off as you completely not understanding what I'm saying... I've debated many times with both Ariana stans and non-fans who say conflicting things about her voice then and her voice now, so trust me, I know I'm talking about in regards to what they say, whether or not I believe or agree with one statement or another. And like I said, her voice WAS better back then and you can only really judge one's true voice by how good their technique is. If their technique is flawed then you can never really know how great a singer they are or could be - you can't just go by one's potential.

I could sit here all day and throw facts and you'll just continue trying to counter with no real respect for my words or desire to hear them ctfu. so i just respond by telling you you're wrong and leave it at that
LOL. Her in 2016 is so much better than before. You just need to listen her singing Into You A Cappella to confirm. It's her true voice, and way better to hear.
Suddenly, everyone is a certified vocal coach here just because they have watched a few singing videos and the X factor....including the person that uploaded this particular video. LOL.
I think her belts had less head voice back then. Overall I think she's better now, but I did like a lot of the things she did in 2011. She actually pronounced her words lol
I think the only thing old Ariana has on new Ariana is support because she used to support Eb5 and now only up to C5/C#5 however I think personally some of the D5s in the Jason Robert performance sound supported but I'm not sure so mabye she's getting it back idk
When I was doing classical music as a soprano my teacher would tell me to hit the notes during some songs and don't annunciate because the altos would be doing that. I never liked doing that. The lack of pronunciation could be her just trying to hit the note but she does it a lot.
A few things: 1. Her not pronouncing words is a stylistic choice - has NOTHING to do with her technique. 2. Her clear/chesty sound in the past is Ariana mimicking famous singers an using a sound almost every girl tries to get = not original. 3. Her voice nowadays is very consistent, she slayed the entire last tour with superb vocals and improved every tour date. 4. She just uses a more heady mix nowadays in comparison to 2011/2012. It is not unhealthy, its just a different approach. 5. i could go on forever, all these people making wrong assumptions it's so annoying.
Sjoerd de Buck Wrong. Your diction goes hand in hand with your technique. Her bad enunciation is caused by her poor technique. Using a low larynx and being nasal makes it harder to have clarity of diccion and that's exactly her problem.
@loulou boys the way celine becomes nasal is because she uses a lot of twang and raises her larynx. Ariana gets nasal because of singing too heady. That kind of nasality makes it hard for vowels to be clear. Since vowels are shaped by the mouth, if a lot of air goes through the nasal cavity (the soft palate lowers) the shapes of the vowels are lost.
I am also a singer, and i know from expirience, as you become more vocally sounded you become more adjusted to your voice as you grow, its your vocal chords and they are like all regular muscles and if you build up, you can control what you want your voice to sound like, example, her impressions, how they are almost spot on, that is the control she has in her voice. its an amazing gift to have, its not that she had a big voice then, where she was 5 years younger and still finding her voice, she still has a big voice, she can make it clear and powerful but she also has that advantage of breathy beautiful tone, its all in her vocal chords and her breathing, and she is trained and therefore her training give her control.
And now her voice is maturing beautifully, her belts sound more mixed and balanced, her natural broadway vibrato, her lows are more audible and stable, and her WHISTLES are just perfect...
She used to be resonant before and can support up to Eb5, but today, her lows are soooo powerful. Her tone is better. And I think she can still be powerful as before, if shell sing something like broadway (Her 2016 Jason Robert Brown is powerful). But hey, that C5 in Wizard and I is sooooo good
I don't think her voice was ever powerful. She sang in a chestier mix than she could afford to earlier because she was not expected to sing night after night as she is now. If a voice has true "weight" it carries throughout the entire range. Pre-fame Ariana had chesty belts that were incongruent with the lightness of the rest of her voice. Now the whole of her voice is light, which gives her a lot more agility and the ability to sustain her voice. A light voice can have chesty belts; it's just not advisable and will lead to damage over time. It happens in opera. Hell, it happens with coaches who scream and yell beyond their natural vocal size.
Alicia Chocolate Lovely Scully avi. No, I'm not lost. You can have a "big sound" with a small voice, especially with amplification and other acoustical tweaking. When amplification is there, the size of the voice is still demonstrated by its weight, that is the fullness it exudes. If you Listen to Ari sing the song and then to Whitney sing it, you will notice a huge difference in "fullness."
+HelloZooty xfiles is the best But you can't compare a outstanding singer as WHITNEY HOUSTON to Ariana Grande. Of course Whitney had a much bigger voice, but we got different opinions so...I still think that Ariana has a beautiful voice but of course Whitney had a bigger one.

First of all I know this comment is old but YOU CANNOT compare them..Why? Oh well they have a different tastes in music, different genres, so how can you expect Taylor Swift to hit high notes like Ariana Grande.. Taylor is into Country music and Ariana is Pop tho Taylor Swift does Pop songs but still.. Im just saying..
2 reasons why some might say she sounded "more powerful" before than now. 1. If you noticed most of her older perfomances were in much smaller rooms where the sound from her mic is much louder where as now you used videos of her on TOUR with a MUCH bigger area and thousands of more people that are louder. 2. She had an unhealthy mix back then. The "powerful" notes people claim she had was from her putting for chest in her belts. The same thing Whitney did and Christina does, which is why people say their voices are more powerful than lets say Mariah or Celine. Also, what people tent to forget is that she is older now, her voice has deepened meaning in order to reach the notes she hit before, or even higher she needs to add more head.
+AnonymousXtinaSinger Agreed until "g for chest in her belts. The same thing Whitney did and Christina does, which is why people say their voices are more powerful than lets say Mariah or Celine. " No. Xtina pulls her chest voice far, far more than Whitney did in her early career. Whitney began pulling at about G5+, but in her early career, her notes are powerful because they are. She was a heavy soprano. Whitney's voice has significant weight throughout the WHOLE voice: the lower register was lush, the head voice was strong, and the middle was devastating. She also had a supreme resonance. She had a much bigger voice than any of those you mentioned
+AnonymousXtinaSinger Celine pulls her chest way more than Whitney did. And Ariana's voice hasn't deepened... We're talking about her from when she was an older teenager to just a few years later - wait another 5+ years to see if it does deepen, but most light lyrics' voices do not deepen considerably. Also, not sure about her mix being unhealthy per se, as her overall technique was better. But today it is a bit more healthy - the technique just isn't there to keep that power or resonance consistent.
Another reason is The Mic in the performances that she sounded big/powerful less quality. When the Mic doesn't have Good quality the result of sound is Big but not Clear. If the Mic have good quality of course the result of sound will be very clear.
it's because she was using improper technique. the way she was singing was very damaging to her voice. she may sound more shrill now, but it's only because she's mixing properly now. but in more recent performances she has been really great at adding vibrato!
I doubt it they have two completely different fachs. Beyonce is a mezzo. Ariana is a lite lyric soprano... Her voice may get rounder but retain its brightness. Who knows?
Now she holds back resonating her mid belts throughout songs to hit her upper belts (F#5-Bb5) with more clarity. I wish hope she's able to find a balance.
DYDS-7224 the voice as a WHOLE has improved wildy. The only thing that isn't great is her diction and tbh that's due to laziness as opposed to lack of ability as we can see how crisp her diction in that Jason robert brown video
Now she is the best singer!!! Ariana partially supported some F5s, supported E5s, and consistently C # 5 and D5. Her head voice is also much more controlled and supported. She also supported an E3 almost totally
Seems like no matter what Ariana does with her voice people have to say she tries too hard to sound like Christina or Mariah...what the fuck is she supposed to do then? She sounds amazing in a higher register AND a low register so leave her the fuck alone!!! She is one of the only singers today who sounds amazing without auto tune so it is very clear that she doesn't need anyone's approval. She's been kicking ass since she was a child and will continue doing so, becoming legendary like Whitney or Madonna.
Her voice now is better because she's singing in her natural voice. And besides, her bright tone sets her apart. It's easy to recognize that it's her singing.
Even though I love her I think that her voice was much better back then. She was much more resonant and she didn't raise her larynx lower than F5. But then she started talking with a fake voice in victorious which messed up her voice. Now her voice is very heady and weak and she lowers or raises her larynx to sound powerful but that actually makes her sound like there is something in her voice which can be very annoying sometimes.I also don't like the raspiness which is present in her voice nowadays.
Actually it's just her voice matured Actually I prefered her vocal path nowadays Now it's 2019 Her vocal prime so far It's proven that all of the vocal decline rumors are wrong
Go on Frankie Grande's youtube page & check out the video of her singing (it's in black and white) and she's has very clear dictation, I think she chooses to mumble with her songs. But I think when she sings Broadway songs she tries to enunciate clearer
the distance to the mic is explainable. she started as a theatre artist which needs you to have a loud voice even you are just talking. workshops help. she have a flexible voice which also explains different attitudes when she sing, thinner or bigger voice.
She has better technique now then she used to. She sounded like she was trying to sound stronger vocally or imitating her idols. Her natural voice is powerful but more smooth and light.
I can't understand how people say that she improved when she was able to sing resonant C#5 pre debut, while now she can only support up to B4/C5 - without resonance.
this is the first time I'm noticing this to be honest altho I'm sure the reason her mixed belts are more heady is because she uses of who ever is training because many vocal trainers would advice their students to just use more head voice with anything above E5 some even say it's better if you do it with any belt in the fifth octave
I think she made her voice strong, yes. But now she makes her voice lighter, but on purpose. It's natural for her. When forcing it out, it's not natural and could be unhealthy. Like at 4:40 , with her impersonation of Christina Aguilera. It's an IMPERSONATION. It's not her natural voice for her to sound so strong, in that forced way. At 5:15 , that "they go" high note, you could hear her natural voice. It's different and that's how she should sing. Naturally.
if you listen to her song "higher" she recorded n wrote when she was 14 it's actually quite good. she's changed up her style because it was hurting her vocal chords unfortunately and i think she still sounds as amazing! example, her cover of emotions
for the record- she can still sing like this. Look at Frankie's video recently posted of her singing Jason Robert Brown songs! She can still sing like a broadway star. She just has changed her voice to a different style to showcase her personality as a vocalist rather than just having a traditional "big voice"
i think since a lot of the songs were covers she was really just doing impersonations rather than singing in her natural voice. which is fine because it's a cover, i think when she became big she didn't want people to compare, which they clearly are doing now. and she wanted to create her own distinct style. i will say though i prefer her original technique. it showed what she was actually capable of
That wasn't her real voice what she sounds like in 2014 and 2015 and 2016 and 2017 and 2018 and now is her real voice! WHAT I hear in her voice back then is Christina Aguilera she was inspired but forgot that she has her own voice i guess, You can even hear Christina in 3:58
Honestly idk, she was amazing then and still is! There are some styles I wish she kept but she's still giving people reasons to compare her with legends bc she sounds like them.
Channel #2 At least I'm not spending my life dedicating it to a overrated person. Honestly Ariana can not sing she just screams in a microphone. So much talented people who are not being seen.
+Channel #2 she's over rated and she can't sing. She screams in a Mic. There's so many talented people who won't be recognized. I used to think she was ok until she started thinking she was the best person. She would literally walk around with nothing on. She never gets judged for it. But Miley does. Selena Gomez does.
This video made me realize how good of a singer Ariana Grande is. She might try to imitate others while singing, but that doesn't mean she's a bad singer! I mean, are you hearing her?? And Ariana Grande has her own style now. She doesn't have to "try another style." I like her current style and I think that makes her unique.
+daria in my opinion i think she's a loooot better now , and now she comfortable up to E5 in chest voice she improved and she's better now she's also more confident now
I believe her voice has matured rather than weakened or strengthened. She uses a different technique now. This technique uses more mixed rather than belt. On broadway you mainly belt, but in pop you learn to mix more. If you noticed that most of the songs in this are musical theater related
many people have said this already but this is due to development in technique, she was damaging her voice back then. I know from experience that when you first start belting its hard to get high unless you just go for it so it always sounds big, but it isn't very good for your voice. now she's able to belt without straining her voice.
I think she just had a chest dominant mix when she was young and she also lowered her larynx in a lot of those videos. smaller rooms she was in as well so the sound output was louder than if she was in a stadium.
I don't think it matters she sounds perfect then and now and I think over the years of singing you find your voice more and more so it changes a little bit but I think if I had a voice like hers I would use it like everyday around my house and out in public because not a lot of people get blessed with such a strong voice.
I beleive that she is told how to sing by her record label. They brand her just like they do when they make her produce pop music even thought she wants to expand. If she takes full control if her career i believe her singing voice would change considerably and she would probably even change her entire genre
Bloody nora her voice has been so amazing- why are we not hearing this natural stuff now? And there is me thinking 'don't dream its over' was great for her voice.
She didn’t lost the voice she showed pst few years, she just had her own style now. As u can see, when she impersonates, she slays. she still got the power of having strong voice or whatever, she just found her spot 😊
She did do a lot of covers of songs but I don't believe she tried to sound vocally like other artists, she knew she had the range to sing powerful songs and I do agree that she did try to cover songs the way they were recorded she has the vocal ability for it but with singers even Christina aguilera-she was soft then when harder later on vocal wise but in both cases that's more about branding and selling an artist she did not wanna be sounding all soft and sultry she wanted to be a powerhouse vocal. I think Ariana is doing what her label wants her to do and being easier on her vocals but also still shining through at certain moments before she didn't have to do or sound like anything but what she wanted to showcase so that's why there's a big difference in sound
At 2:23 when it says that you can clearly hear the words that's because it's not her song so she sings it how it's meant to be sung but her songs are more upbeat
I love her voice NOW more! I can tell you why: - Then she sang with a fake tone.I think every singer should have his own voice. It should sound naturally. Not similar to another's voice!!! - This is damaging her voice (then) - I don't like growls it just damages your voice when you do it always for years till it's a habbit!!! - She had better support then but now her belts don't sound so shouty and she can sing higher too! I love her.I love that she doesn't overuse falsetto and whistle tones because you should make a rest from it. Maybe her lows aren't so good anymore but she doesn't sing with a fake tune anymore and she doesn't shout so much when she is belting now.
I don't love Ariana's voice as much as I did before. It's just my style preference. I didn't like her impressions and I do believe she was damaging her voice with them but when she was in 13: the Musical on Broadway you could see how talented she was, even at the age of 13. She's really talented, I just am not a big fan of the breathiness she sings with now.
Ariana was causing damage to her vocals, she wasn't singing the natural way her voice should, she was imitating artists, her new style is her true style
THANK...YOU!!!

Anna Leigh She should improve her technique and develope her real voice.
she sounds much better now. shes not straining at all her control is insane!
Shaney Waney shes still straining above B4
She had to enunciate her words for Broadway and her tv shows bc she had to be understood. Now she doesn't have to
you should watch ariana grande sing Jason Robert brown uploaded by frankie grande
Agreed she killed it
She still has that voice, just nowadays she sings in her higher register. Listen to her on "Hairspray Live"; that voice is still there.
Her voice now is better because she's singing in her natural voice. And besides, her bright tone sets her apart. It's easy to recognize that it's her singing.
1:18 , she's cracking right ?
Even though I love her I think that her voice was much better back then. She was much more resonant and she didn't raise her larynx lower than F5. But then she started talking with a fake voice in victorious which messed up her voice. Now her voice is very heady and weak and she lowers or raises her larynx to sound powerful but that actually makes her sound like there is something in her voice which can be very annoying sometimes.I also don't like the raspiness which is present in her voice nowadays.
Actually it's just her voice matured
Actually I prefered her vocal path nowadays
Now it's 2019
Her vocal prime so far
It's proven that all of the vocal decline rumors are wrong
I liked her old voice a lot better . She was also better at enunciating her words
Go on Frankie Grande's youtube page & check out the video of her singing (it's in black and white) and she's has very clear dictation, I think she chooses to mumble with her songs. But I think when she sings Broadway songs she tries to enunciate clearer
Yes
But her voice back thene was being damaged cuz she was imitating other singers
She sounded like other singers, because her voice is common in pop.
Yea it got a bit worse but it's actually getting better again :)
even with an improper technique..she sounds great?! I wish I could sound like her
I fucking hate it when people compare artists to other people, reminder: THEY ARE THERE OWN PERSON SO RESPECT THERE STYLE
the distance to the mic is explainable. she started as a theatre artist which needs you to have a loud voice even you are just talking. workshops help. she have a flexible voice which also explains different attitudes when she sing, thinner or bigger voice.
Through all those years ariana was trying to find her own style and voice so of course she's going to have changed no hate x
She has better technique now then she used to. She sounded like she was trying to sound stronger vocally or imitating her idols. Her natural voice is powerful but more smooth and light.
I don’t think she lost her strong voice
She just found her own style now
ariana always had a powerful voice her technique changed drastically
she is perfect
I can't understand how people say that she improved when she was able to sing resonant C#5 pre debut, while now she can only support up to B4/C5 - without resonance.
1:18 yikes but I still love her!
this is the first time I'm noticing this to be honest altho I'm sure the reason her mixed belts are more heady is because she uses of who ever is training because many vocal trainers would advice their students to just use more head voice with anything above E5 some even say it's better if you do it with any belt in the fifth octave
TayTay BeyNippy dude, anything above A high E I can't hit without any head voice.
Naturally.
She just changed her style. She can still sing like that just she likes to sing softer
if you listen to her song "higher" she recorded n wrote when she was 14 it's actually quite good. she's changed up her style because it was hurting her vocal chords unfortunately and i think she still sounds as amazing! example, her cover of emotions
The F#5 at 2:09 sounded amazing😍
And the C5 at 2:59
for the record- she can still sing like this. Look at Frankie's video recently posted of her singing Jason Robert Brown songs! She can still sing like a broadway star. She just has changed her voice to a different style to showcase her personality as a vocalist rather than just having a traditional "big voice"
Oh wow her larynx was crazy low before..... I'm glad she got over that
i think since a lot of the songs were covers she was really just doing impersonations rather than singing in her natural voice. which is fine because it's a cover, i think when she became big she didn't want people to compare, which they clearly are doing now. and she wanted to create her own distinct style. i will say though i prefer her original technique. it showed what she was actually capable of
That wasn't her real voice what she sounds like in 2014 and 2015 and 2016 and 2017 and 2018 and now is her real voice!
WHAT I hear in her voice back then is Christina Aguilera she was inspired but forgot that she has her own voice i guess,
You can even hear Christina in 3:58
She is AMAZINGLY talented. I just hate to see how the "industry" uses their new "puppet". God Bless.
SHE IS QUEEN 😍
Her ease made her belts sound less powerful, at least she can sing higher now but I'd rather power than ease
I think she can still sing strong she just chooses not to because sometimes it can be really unhealthy
Ari is queen and had always sang amazing . MOONLIGHT QUEEN💜👑🌙
Honestly idk, she was amazing then and still is! There are some styles I wish she kept but she's still giving people reasons to compare her with legends bc she sounds like them.
did you compare her to Whitney? please don't
do u know what's comparison?
Why not?
+Elizabeth Elizabeth Atleast I don't live life hating on someone famous 😂 here you are texting back knowing she will never see this
Channel #2 At least I'm not spending my life dedicating it to a overrated person.
She could sing like this now but her new style fits her more comfortably and honestly she could mess up the lyrics/voice crack and I’d still love it
Her technique is way better now!
I thought I was the only one who noticed her voice changed a lot I love both ways 🥰🥰
it's called growing up selena's voice also changed it's just growing up
omg your profile pic. i love Colleen
+daria in my opinion i think she's a loooot better now , and now she comfortable up to E5 in chest voice she improved and she's better now she's also more confident now
a lazy person Selena has loads of auto tune it's cringey to hear her voice in real ife
Life
yeah but ari doesn't suck lmao
I believe her voice has matured rather than weakened or strengthened. She uses a different technique now. This technique uses more mixed rather than belt. On broadway you mainly belt, but in pop you learn to mix more. If you noticed that most of the songs in this are musical theater related
+Michael Davis-Arnold all belting for a female of her voice type is mixed... it just depends how much chest or head voice there is in the mix
She sings like an angel, her voice is BEAUTIFUL💕💖😇🎤
many people have said this already but this is due to development in technique, she was damaging her voice back then. I know from experience that when you first start belting its hard to get high unless you just go for it so it always sounds big, but it isn't very good for your voice. now she's able to belt without straining her voice.
Could you give me some tips ?
you can say anything you want, i love ariana and her voice
She sounded more womanly younger than now.
I think she just had a chest dominant mix when she was young and she also lowered her larynx in a lot of those videos.
smaller rooms she was in as well so the sound output was louder than if she was in a stadium.
Why bash Ariana ? I'm pretty sure Mariah had enough plastic surgery.
Channel #2 she's not bashing her...
I'm arianator and I didn't see any hate in this text.
Tbh I like how she acts right now...it makes her look so adorable ❤️❤️❤️
The clips you used sent me to the stars.
having your own style of voice is way better than imitating other artists
In my opinion she sounded good then and she sounds good now.
I don't think it matters she sounds perfect then and now and I think over the years of singing you find your voice more and more so it changes a little bit but I think if I had a voice like hers I would use it like everyday around my house and out in public because not a lot of people get blessed with such a strong voice.
She still sounds like that. She uses a different, more nasal, girly, gentle technique now to make it more flawless and feminine.
I Love Ariana so much!!!
He is right about hearing her clearer but she still sound good
I beleive that she is told how to sing by her record label. They brand her just like they do when they make her produce pop music even thought she wants to expand. If she takes full control if her career i believe her singing voice would change considerably and she would probably even change her entire genre
She's grown up! Plus, you expect every singer to not practise ? The fact she can sing is the most unusual in music today
That's because her voice hadn't made the change yet and was starting to so it was sort of a mix and it sounded really good
You are right💚
she looks really pretty in the Christmas bit
Bloody nora her voice has been so amazing- why are we not hearing this natural stuff now? And there is me thinking 'don't dream its over' was great for her voice.
She still does have a big voice
She didn’t lost the voice she showed pst few years, she just had her own style now. As u can see, when she impersonates, she slays. she still got the power of having strong voice or whatever, she just found her spot 😊
Her mix in the Victorious era is chesty, plus she used a low larynx. It was only in 2012 that she started using her normal voice live.
also bang bang showed off her belt very well and her christina esque vocals as well
She did do a lot of covers of songs but I don't believe she tried to sound vocally like other artists, she knew she had the range to sing powerful songs and I do agree that she did try to cover songs the way they were recorded she has the vocal ability for it but with singers even Christina aguilera-she was soft then when harder later on vocal wise but in both cases that's more about branding and selling an artist she did not wanna be sounding all soft and sultry she wanted to be a powerhouse vocal. I think Ariana is doing what her label wants her to do and being easier on her vocals but also still shining through at certain moments before she didn't have to do or sound like anything but what she wanted to showcase so that's why there's a big difference in sound
She sounds like this in her dangerous woman album. Well, better ofcourse, but its more strong than nasally
At 2:23 when it says that you can clearly hear the words that's because it's not her song so she sings it how it's meant to be sung but her songs are more upbeat
Nope now she's better
I love Ariana Grande ♥♥♥♥
I love her voice NOW more!
I can tell you why:
- Then she sang with a fake tone.I think every singer should have his own voice. It should sound naturally. Not similar to another's voice!!!
- This is damaging her voice (then)
- I don't like growls it just damages your voice when you do it always for years till it's a habbit!!!
