    Loved this movie as a kid. Rewatched it a couple of months ago with two friends who likes corny 80's-90's martial arts movies. One of them had to walk out of the movie like half way in. The other one managed to cringe through it all, for that I salute him

      Corey Yuen, the fight/action choreographer, who has worked with Jet Li and was in the same class with Jackie Chan in the Peking Opera school they trained at, said that Karate Kid was the inspiration for No Retreat, No Surrender.

    The martial art Jason was learning from the Ghost of Bruce Lee was Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do isn't considered Karate or Kung Fu, even though one of the martial arts that form the basis for it is Wing Chun Kung Fu, which Bruce Lee studied. When Jason would call him Sensei Lee, while he was technically correct in the sense that the ghost was being a teacher and in real life Bruce Lee was an instructor, Sensei is the Japanese word for teacher.

    • @graemesmith6721

      Yes, it should be Sifu Lee, since Bruce was Chinese. Well, actually, Bruce Lee was an American, since he was born in San Francisco, but still...

    This movie is an 80's cliche melting pot of fun. It one of the first martial arts movie I ever watched that whet my appetite for the harder stuff: Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Even a Norris or two. It doesn't really hold up, and I realized it's super cheesy. Ah memories!

      As far as non- Rated R goes, since it was the only rated PG movie in the series. The rest were Rated R. But, compared to the other 3 movies....the action was much better and the humor...even more crazier :D

    7:53 Well, the Chinese practice ancestor worship as part of their filial piety concept, which includes praying to your great-grandfather as well as legendary heroes, so praying to Bruce Lee isn't really far off, apart form that all traditional martial arts masters wanting him dead and all for making their "sacred art" public property and basically defiling all the the mystique and the Shaolin snake oil stuff they were selling.

    Hmmm...what can I say. I enjoyed this review! LOL
    This version of the movie isn't the Original version. There's like at least 3 different versions; the original version, the extended overseas versions and the fan versions. This version is o0ne of the extended overseas versions. How you know that is the soundtrack music is different for the original vs the extended overseas.
    In general, depending on who you talk to, some ppl like the original vs the extended vs the fan versions. Many ppl like the extended and fan version because of the action and or the scenes are extended or not edited short. Many like the original version because of the original soundtrack being much better than the extended version, even though the action and other scenes are edited shorter. I like the fan and extended overseas versions because of the extended scenes, especially when the scenes that go into detail about the "generic crime syndicate" LMAO.

    I used to love this movie,and honestly,if anyone couldve asked bruce lee,when he was alive,how he would feel about someone starring as his ghost,that came back to teach martial arts to some kid..i bet he would,ve loved the idea,especially if they assured him,that someone who has already portrayed him in a movie,while he was making movies himself,would get the role...i just think almost any showman would love to pull that off...

    I don't think the Bruce Lee's ghost thing is in poor taste. It's DUMB, but it's not in poor taste. Certainly not by Brucesploitation standards...I've seen the ghost of Bruce Lee fight Popeye and Dracula. Game of Death used footage from Bruce Lee's funeral, including shots of his actual corpse, in his open casket. THAT'S in poor taste.

    The funny thing is, unless Scott has really rich or powerful parents, he'd be the target for relentless bullying. Being obese and stuffing yourself like a pig every waking moment simply mark you for that. I'd say that's the most unrealistic part of the movie, even taking the ghost of Bruce Lee or the braindead drug pushing scheme of the bad guys into account.

  • @AlexanderThaG
    @AlexanderThaG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you are hilarious! proper review of this "shit show" movie. you got the right tone and everything. the movie true messed up the theme by not finishing the movie at the cemetery, Bruce Lee's grave. with the main character, his girl and RJ together, then the kid pays gratitude to the master for teaching the way of Jeet June Do. and perhaps the leaves on the trees move to signal ghost 👻 of Bruce Lee has heard his appreciation speech and approves. The End. if they simply included this scene it would have made up for a lot of plot holes and developed the main character better. they missed a golden opportunity to make this movie a bonafied "Karate 🥋 Kid" wannabe rip-off classic. they owed us that last scene at least, but blew it royally and left all these loose ends. Does the syndicate dissolve after Krushinsky loss? Does the assistant instructor apologize to main character for bullying/misunderstanding?? does the "fat bully" get HIS comeuppance? Does his father now recognize his son's potential as martial artist and approves of his determination to no retreat and no surrender(unlike him)?
