  • In today's Van life documentary we talk with Ryan who has been living in a minivan for 3 months. He was gifted the mini van from his ex partner and he says that this saved him from living on the streets as a homeless person. He tells us that he had to leave his last housing situation because he had no choice and that it was one of these classic BC housing crisis situations. Ryan was interested in Vanlife prior to this and so when he was facing homelessness he knew that Vanlife would allow him to at least live some kind of better life. A van acts like a home in the way where you can lock up your possessions, have a permanent bed, cooking area and a place to feel safe and away from the elements. Too bad he has to go through this after a divorce! But this guys is doing the right thing not having to worry about rent would give him a chance to get back on his feet sooner, if he spend wisely and save his money! Good luck to him and may god bless him abundantly with what he needs to get back on his feet. I would have love to have him tell us where he find safe places to park his van and sleep!

I was kicked out of the place I was living by my brother just because he felt like it. I ended up selling my Jeep and buying a Toyota 4Runner and a 21 foot travel trailer. I did that six months ago. I was taking 75 Xanax a month and on antidepressant medication. Three weeks into my journey I stopped taking all medications that dealt with depression and anxiety. Waking up to views in the mornings of mountains and valleys and the peace and quiet has been a blessing I never even knew existed. It’s just me and my German Shepherd and we are living our best life now… and not paying $2000 a month for rent! You got this brother!

It sucks when you are forced into the nomadic lifestyle. It's not easy, financially and mentally. But I can promise you it's not as bad as people make it out to be. You have a roof over your head without the stress of worrying about rent, and you have freedom most importantly. You start that engine, and the world is yours. And even though the whole world is telling you "gas is expensive right now", remember you are not driving 24/7. Later on you're not even going to be driving every week. In a couple of months, you'll sit there and think WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I DO THIS SOONER!! Best lifestyle change you'll ever make. It allows you to take a breather. Just to find some peace, away from the constant stress life hands us.

In my early 20's I was also homeless for a while but always held a job. I owned a bike, small tent, and mobile phone. Local parks served as safe locations where I could camp and take bird baths. Ofcourse I had to conceal as not to call attention to myself from the locals or more importantly others willing to do harm. I am a home owner now, am married, and have children of my own but every time I see someone down on their luck who really is trying to survive I reach out in some way to let them know that I see you, and feel for you, I was once you!

At least you can organize your life, and organize the van you are living in... Working as this man sais, and not having to pay any rent, there must be left some small money, to build in a nice, comfi livingplace.. Instead of this what he is showing... My story is very similar as to the costs of higher rent, I'm so glad I had gotten my 1st van then and watching TH-cam looking at tiny homes and van builds...I got inspired to fix up my van to live in just in time before my lease contract renewal came around and the apartment complex also had new owners that bought it said rent was going up for anyone renewing their lease, anyway the rent gone up to high to where I couldn't afford it anymore, but I thank God for the van, it's been a roof over my head and rent free since, I love this van life, it may not be easy but rewarding and been less stressful too. I'm glad this guy gotten a van do he wouldn't be in the streets too.
(My 1st van had almost 3 yrs, then transmission went out on it, and few months later for the same cost of a new transmission and labor, I bought another new van instead, it runs good, 5yrs newer than my previous and this one even has a topper too, and almost halfway done with my 2nd van conversion build getting there slowly but surely 😉👍) take care y'all and be safe and blessed as well.

Not only can you travel in van life but can save you some money. Now in 2022 with prices of everything going up that can be a little bit hard on van life because like he said gas prices are high and car insurance went up too. But apartments rents is the most expensive!! So at least he doesn't have to pay apartment rent.
Now in 2022, many individuals are being forced to finding ways to make it and are turning to a different way of living because everything is getting so expensive! Many of turning to van life, living in a RV or tiny homes. People are trying to make ends meet because salaries are not going up but the cost of living is going up in 2022!

Great interview, it was respectfully done. My thoughts on this man's situation is ;'He dodged a bullet', yes ,'but the gun should never have been fired in the first place'. Yes he is being positive in a dire situation, I salute him. I believe that over time van life gets more and more difficult. It's not fun having to shower at a gym or go to the bathroom in a public toilet, if you are lucky enough to find ones that are open and clean enough to use.
Living in a van or car is not ideal in the long term but it sure is a lifeline when threatened with homelesness. I pray this does not become the norm though. Affordable public housing should be our goal moving forward. I will keep this man in my prayers.

I was homeless for a year... fortunately, I had a job serving tables...next door was a storage unit so I rented a large one for all my things, during the day I would take time weeding out old stuff I no longer needed, I would organize boxes and other things...on one side. I had all my workout equipment there on the other side. I also had a couple organizers I could hang up all my clothes, same for shoes. If I wanted to workout, I moved a few big boxes around and no one bothered me. I already had mass food quantities there and a cooler in my car's trunk plus another box for canned food and extra water and my blankets and pillows in the trunk too. I had a small bag ready to go in the trunk so no one thought I lived in the car. The place I worked had a washer/ dryer for towels but no one knew I used them because no one bothered to go back there and I had the run of the place. If I worked a double shift, lunch and dinner were free..if I didn't, I always made good tips.
There was a gas station nearby that shut down at ten and the station never locked the bathroom...the bathroom was outside so all I had to do was pull up, lock the door and wash up, cut my hair, and change. If there was a gathering of friends or family and I had to dress nice, I would take my suit to the cleaners to avoid a musty storage unit smell. There were times that I could couch surf with various friends or if I was dating but no one knew...not even my parents. Everything I did had to be built around speed...to be able and leave at a moment's notice..I went back to my car late at night and woke up very early so I could drive around and find a secluded area and sleep or park somewhere, like a McDonald's to use their free wi-fi.
I saved as much as I could.. until a friend mentioned she needed a roommate. I was lucky...I had those things..not everyone does. I'm actively looking to buy a RV now...I miss the freedom of being able to get up and leave anytime.

At the very beginning of the Pandemic I had a choice of going back to my Mom's, as I was helping her and my stepdad with their technical needs for their "radio" ministry ... And risking passing CoVid to them ... Or living in my van. I choose the van and OMG ... Changed my life for the better.
No one could tell I was 'homeless', because I had my van setup with Walmart plastic drawers in the back hatch, kept clean 'bird-bath' style via the local park's one person bathroom, And met some really good, sometimes troubled folks without a vehicle.
I hosted folks in my extra back seat during cold weather and NEVER felt in danger. That is except for the police ... Their message was "Any where but here"... Sad really.
One thing all van lifers should know is that post offices are Gov property and local police have zero jurisdiction over Gov property. They can do wellness checks but any tickets get thrown out if you are parked in a Gov parking lot. I go 4 tickets and all were thrown out by the Judge.
I think this guy should travel to Bob's crew to help him get setup for real. He'd be so thrilled to see what they can do to help outfit his van - NO BUILD solutions.
I am housed now due to a friend who ran into a lot of medical problems -not CoVid related. I ended up being her caretaker and MAN ... Big job! Hats off to all the Pro-Caregivers! It was a real challenge.
Sadly, both my parents passed from CoVid August and September 2021. Going through probate now. Hoping to get a StepVan to convert into my home on wheels and hit the road. Truly LOVED living mobile. Gave me true independence and freedom. Looking forward to that again!!!
God Bless ya'll and be wise, humble and careful. Life on Wheels is the ULTIMATE Ride to self-discovery.

True, but please understand many of us come from abusive home environments and unless you want to go back to being around toxic people, sometimes it's better to live in a vehicle than go back to abuse. Also, for many of us who grow up in these environments, we tend to attract the same type of abusive people, so it can be hard to develop connections with healthy minded people...

I lived in a minivan for 3 years specifically to escape an abusive family. It was the best decision I ever made, and allowed me to not only survive but to prosper. Too much of our society, including a lot of families, thrive on taking advantage of someone's dependence to survive. Van living is an excellent way to break that bad cycle. When you don't depend on someone else, it's much harder for them to take advantage of you.

    • @ilovemytribe
      @ilovemytribe 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@alostbard I have felt the exact same way, but never was able to put it into words. You're right, a lot of relationships- family, romantic, work etc.. are really codependency, and for some reason if a human feels like they have some sort of power over you, or you're in as dependent situation, people like to abuse that power and you. Humanity is still very dark, and living in your vehicle, does offer some protection from these human predators...

Get yourself onto free cycle looking for some simple furniture to make organisation easier (I'm a naturally untidy person but I have to blitz every now and again even for my own sanity!) Look out for a blanket box or toy box with a lift up lid so you have a flat surface to cook on away from anything flammable. You can even turn them on their side so the lid opens downwards to give you a surface for food prep. If you wanted to you could position it so that the flat opens out through the door so you could cook outside. Cut out the top half of the side facing inwards so you can still reach to get to stuff from inside. Good luck with getting your family back together x

Sorry to ramble :D but I'm at this stage in my own car and repurposing furniture is the way I am going! (A TV table in my case.) If you had a blanket/toy box on its side you could position it so that the lid opens out through the door and rests on the ledge so you could cook outside. Cut the top half of the side facing inwards so you can still reach in from inside for when cooking outside isn't an option and put a few cardboard boxes inside to stop everything falling out when you open the lid/door.

@@danielshaw9465 am glad you agree brother let's find a way to tag them. I pray that one day God will bless me enough to come through for such people in need of a little push 🤝

I lived in my van for 3 months, then again for almost a year. I love my van for some peace of mind, but full time is difficult. Taking a break due to gas cost. But.. I'll be back and traveling.

I just went on a 8 day camper van trip. I took showers and worked out at the gym, went out and had fun at night.
    It was a blast!!

This guy has a great attitude. I wish he was in the US and I would help him organize his van LOL.

lol that’s exactly what I was thinking. He’s so disorganized. It just looks like he threw all of his belongings in his van 😅

@@bakarangerpinku That's a bit tough. He knows where all his stuff is in the van and he possibly did have to throw all his belongings in there. The guy is working two jobs. Probably doesn't have time for much house keeping. I take my hat off to him.

I'm living this lifestyle since April 23rd 2021. Cheaper than rent and now I've hooked up a 455watt solar panel with 4 batteries and a 40watt MPPT solar charge controller with 2 circuit breakers. Now I don't have to run the engine for power. I have propane-LPG gas bottle, 20litre water container and kitchen outback of my minivan.

He's Right....mindset and attitude is very important. I'd be on the streets without my van. My daughter Becky bought me this one for 1800 in Feb 2017.....
