    I don't know what it is about our beloved Tornado but ever since I first saw her pass me at Dalgety Bay climbing north, I detected in an instant that she was an exceptional locomotive. She smoothly "hushed" past us like a gigantic sewing machine: silk like, precise as a Swiss watch: no fuss, no effort. Her motion seemed to just glide without friction in every direction: back and forth, compounded with big rotations blending off-set cranks transferring instructions to and from pistons and valves; so elegant, so refined, so perfect. The dimensions of her driving wheels are not really exceptional nor are the planes of the connecting rods and the associated valve gear but Tornado definitely has a certain charisma when she is moving, especially at speed. She is like a greyhound with honed limbs of stainless steel and she roars toward you like a turbojet with hardly a beat to her exhaust. A "Magnificent Machine" for us to behold and a treasure for us to have on the rails in this age and in the future thanks to to the marvellous foresight, vision and expertise of of today's Great British Railway Engineers.

    A first class and thoroughly enjoyable compilation, thanks Liam and Phil. The alternating scenes with different liveries give this a real sense of railway history. My favourite sequence has to be your brilliant pan at 26:35. Kind regards, Bob.

    It replicates the class a1 peppercorns so well. They perform absolutely sublimely in there unfortunately short 16 years of service. But they where amazingly effilent and powerful locos

    Grande Monsieur!
    As youngsters in Ireland, mon amour, we always loved it when the trains passed by at a leisurely rate, as it provided us a great chance to bounce a few ripe tomatoes off some of the pork-pie-faced blokes who stuck their mugs out the window/door openings. Mon Dieu, what fun. ESPECIALLY if they were holding a pint a' bitters that they then dropped!
    Ho-Ho-Ho!...as Monsieur Santa would say.

    • @johnkeepin7527
      @johnkeepin7527 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On specials like that, they are normally just there to provide electric train heating (ETH), especially with air con rolling stock. Some firms use stock with built in generators instead, which looks a bit better! Do the sums yourself, re. dead weight on tow. Of course, the 'tail end' locomotives can also be used for other movements when convenient.

      The locomotive was designed by the LNER, under the guidance of Arthur Peppercorn, who was the chief mechanical engineer of the London North Eastern Railway !

    • @johnkeepin7527
      @johnkeepin7527 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarshSteamVideosTM Yes, it’s a modern interpretation of a classic design, for which no originals exist. Quite a few alterations of course (as it is for anything allowed to run on NR lines). Even the boiler is quite different construction wise. It was made in a factory in Germany which carried on in the East as a manufacturer for Deutsche Reichsbahn, before the wall came down. If there hadn’t been East Germany, it probably wouldn’t be there now (Dampflokwerk Meiningen - www.dampflokwerk.de).
