Background Lore for the Video:
The Commonwealth Minutemen is a volunteer civilian defense militia, described as citizen soldiers banding together to protect themselves and their communities. Similar to the Minutemen of the Revolutionary era, the modern day group is focused on defending the people of Massachusetts, at a minute's notice. A statue near the Old North Bridge commemorates the original group, standing where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired.
The group first rose to prominence in 2180, when they defended Diamond City against a super mutant attack. The Minutemen then attempted to branch out to organize a provisional government with regional settlements. This effort was cut short when group members were murdered by the Institute's representative, a synth. Meanwhile, the group established its headquarters at Fort Independence in South Boston, referring to it as "the Castle." The group including Ronnie Shaw established an armory within the facility, guarded by a sentry bot named Sarge. They maintained operations from this location until 2240, while under the leadership of General McGann, the headquarters were destroyed by a creature that emerged from the surrounding ocean.
The Minutemen continued in their goals of responding to requests for help from nearby settlements that were being attacked, lending their aid towards its defense. The overall faction was historically led by a general and individual contingents led by a colonel. The last Minutemen general, Joe Becker, died in 2282, but who should serve as successor was never agreed upon. After General Becker's death, rivalries between different groups began to cause infighting and disorganization. Some members left the group entirely, such as James Wire and Ronnie Shaw.
The loss of stable leadership and internal squabbles began to erode the efficacy of the group, but the efforts of the Minutemen to respond to defense requests persisted. One such request was from the citizens of Quincy, who were being attacked by a mercenary group known as the Gunners. One group of Minutemen responded to Quincy's request, under the command of Colonel Ezra Hollis. Preston Garvey, a Minutemen member since the age of 17, was in this group and assisted with the efforts to barricade the town against future attacks. Hollis knew that they didn't have the numbers to hold the town against subsequent attacks, but repetitive requests for reinforcements from other Minutemen groups went unanswered.
Shortly thereafter, Clint, a ten year veteran of the Minutemen, arrived in Quincy not to provide reinforcements, but having defected to the Gunner side. Hollis refused to stand down and the Gunners attacked in force, taking the high ground on the overpass. Despite their best efforts, the Minutemen could not defend against the Gunners' superior numbers and position. Colonel Hollis was captured alive, standing by Minutemen principles until the end, executed by Clint. The rest of the inhabitants were killed with the exception of a few who fled with Garvey, who took over after Hollis' death.
That day Preston made a new friend, however. One that would prove instrumental in bringing the organization back on track! One Settlement at a time, as he likes to say. But they aren't the only players in town rebuilding the commonwealth in their image. Raider Gangs coming from the lit fortress of Nuka World are carving new territories for themselves every single day! Whoever it is that ends up on top at the end, they built up some sick s*** along the way. Enjoy!
By this point in the timeline places like this should exist. Not sure how after 200+ years the world is still just a huge mess.
this is how new vegas or boston should've felt for any larger settlement. this settlement is NYC compared to farmland looking at diamond city for comparison.
I always chalk it up to raiders, mutants, deathclaws and infighting.
That, and when you can find portable nukes to throw around willy Nilly any raider on a trip can reduce your settlement to ash on a bad trip
I like to think that no one in the waste knows how to build, like that one friend in Minecraft
Because super mutants, raiders, gunners, ghouls, deathclaws and other dangers make it impossible to start the process of rebuilding society.
The NCR in fallout 2 is supposed to have a population of around 700,000 and thats the 2240s. So the west coast would probably have some relatively large settlements by Fallout 4. The Bethesda games always look like they should have been set much earlier
This is genuinely one of the coolest builds I've EVER seen in Fallout 4. I watched this twice because I was so amazed lmao. Fantastically well-thought out design. It would rival Diamond City, for sure. It reminds me a little of Arefu except you executed it a thousand times better.
Nice! You watched it twice? I think I added enough little details for you to notice something new
@purpleboy3342The negativity was so unnecessary
What settlement is this ?
@purpleboy3342i know this is 6 months ago but...
"when was the last time you spent time to do something impressive to make the family you could lose anytime proud or at least people around happy to see you doing what you love. You got nobody to watch you do it
You think you could do better in the span of 1 day to show the friends you lose over time
You think you're better than what you see? Two... words...
wake up"
@@SirBalzhow do the settlement look like now?
This is honestly fantastically realized. It strikes that perfect balance of post-apocalyptic. It's developed and well-constructed enough to deduce that the world has had plenty of time to rebuild and restart, but also rundown and decrepit enough to show that the world is still broken and scarred.
Imo this is much better than Diamond City, which to me felt more like a modern-day slum rather than a post-apocalyptic metropolis.
I liked diamond city. Goodneighbor I was pretty dissapointed with though so I snatched their singer and gave her a proper venue
@@SirBalzYou snatched her just like the Institute
This is SO great. I love city builds like this. So many lore and ideas just come to your head by just watching it. I love the three rooms with the different people. We had the fashion fan, G.I Joe, and the robotics expert. You already think about what kind of person they might be. I love when in Fallout you can see a place and have so many thoughts. This is what this build does for me.
That's awesome! I love your comment because I didn't think of anything like that while doing it. I was just improvising based on what felt right next to each other, intuition alone. I actually am terrible at creating lore by itself, so it's so cool to hear that what I create creates lore by itself ahaha
This is pretty cool. Obviously a lot of time and effort and it's commendable. Sad some of the older guys have been forgotten. Dude named Werty Perty used to create ridiculously complex settlements, stuff like mazes that were fully mechanized and built, artistically, better than anything I've seen programmed by Bethesda. If you saw them you know....i only spoke with him a few times in messages and he vanished but if you ever find him, ask him to reupload his old settlements...the Dali one is obviously genius level. In total he created about 20 or so settlements that nobody will ever even sniff again and that's tragic. Lost art.
I can't imagine the amount of people creating incredible worlds in game that don't have the technical skills or interest in turning them into content others can consume. Either video, photos, playable mods... sadly takes a team to do all that
@@SirBalz Imagine us who poured hundreds of hours into building only to have our Xbox crash! Time and time again! Lmao. I loved every minute of it. I wish you could collaborate with this guy im talking about. I used to have a playlist of some really amazing isht...stuff similar in scope and creativity to yours. Got wiped out off a ban unfortunately. But I had an idea to do a documentary about builders in FO, you'd have been perfect of course. Thanks for the chat and keep that creativity bubbling!
@@lewislovelord8977 do it. I'd watch. I'll sub to your channel now
Hey so I found werty perty! He has a TH-cam channel I found it by looking up “werty perty fallout 4”
@@dalewelch547 lol. Nice. Glad he has some stuff up still especially the Escher. But sadly that's not his entire portfolio. He used to have so much more posted.
This certainly feels closer to how society would have changed and grown in the shadows of these mega-cities, instead of 1-2 towns between the mountains of rubble.
With super mutants, raiders, the Enclave and other destabilizing factors (including BoS) along with very limited resources and terrible irradiated climate it rather would look like it looks like in Fallout.
Only NCR (that we know of) managed to built some sort of a lasting civilised state but still it probably got destroyed.
@@ArtificialFertilizer Youre talking about 8-10 generations of human beings so incapable of cleaning or creating, that Trudy’s diner has had a corpse taking up 1/12th of the seating space. Nothing done to improve or change the diner into a livable space, no bedroom, no barred windows or functioning door, no garden, no bathroom. The reason the only society weve seen that was capable of 100x more in 1/4 of the time is because the NCR was not written by Bethesda, “Fallout is about society reforming in the ashes of the old world, Bethesda thought it was about the ashes”
@@ArtificialFertilizer You are talking about 8-10 *generations* of humans making literally no progress towards rebuilding society. Trudy’s diner has had a skeleton occupying 1/5 of the booths for over two centuries, no one in that time decided to: Move/bury the body, sweep out the broken glass, move the rotten food off of the tables, make a bedroom, a bathroom or latrine, repair or make a door, board up the windows, plant a garden, or anything useful to basic survival. The only reason that the only society thats made any reasonable advancement isn’t because the NCR are the only capable people left in (at least) the country, its because the NCR wasn’t written by Bethesda, “Fallout is a game about society rebuilding from the ashes of the old world, Bethesda thinks its about the ashes”
You have my genuine respect for taking the time to do this. I absolutely love the base building in FO4, it's the best part of the game for me. I have a nice little stronghold going in the Starlight Drive-in but it's nothing compared to this work of art! Well done!
Thanks a lot, man! I feel you, I've played just about every sandbox out there and no matter how junky this one might be at times. It's the one I gladly come back to
good stuff, but to me it feels pointless because there's nobody attacking your settlements, I know there's mods but the way the AI enemy moves and attacks in this game just feels unnatural and shit compared to even old games like half life 2...add to that the lack of personality in the assets, the only way they were able to have a big world was to repeat assets so that means lack of personality in everything and even the personality that is brought to this game feels to happy to me, like a happy 50's comedy...I wish it was darker, with assets filled with personality and really good AI and a serious plot, not hating just saying
@Vosto Vlad Meh, I get where you're coming from but I'm playing for more of a sense of progression. Random invasions don't give me a sense of progression at all. But seeing my base go from a measly shack to an indomitable stronghold does.
@@Lux_Ferox what's the point of the guards and turrets then
@Vosto Vlad Because even though it's not the reason I'm playing I still engage with the mechanics of the game? Lol what an odd question.
I spent around 40 hrs converting vault 88 into an underground city.
Giving it a Metro 2033 vibe.
I build more than I play the game itself.
But one whole year.
That's on another level.
For all the griping from the "fans", it's amazing how much Fallout 4 offers a gamer.
When a random player is doing a better level design than Besthesda. That's the kind of cities we should have in Fallout. Vanilla cities in fallout makes us feel like they just arrived in the world. Your settlement is full of life and makes us feel people are actually living in there !
💯
Maybe the Bethesda team have lives.
@@ac5788 that has to be the worst take on anything I have ever heard
"I can't do my job because I have a life" lol. Good luck to you
Because, a city like this can’t be handled on all pcs and consoles?
@@flyingsquirrell6953Then how games like Stray can go into this level of details inside a city without lagging?
This is phenomenal, reminds me alot of artists depictions of old london bridge
Appreciate it! London used to be a beautiful city
@@SirBalzUsed?
Yeah, back before ww2. Now since it adopted the internationalist style apart from its landmarks it looks like everywhere else.
Yea London Bridge from the medieval times had buildings like houses along the whole bridge.

Transfer settlements.
At that point just go into the 1s and 0s and try to fine the one thats wrong
That’s a lot of mods too!
that sounds a lot like my starfield experience. was about to finish the game only a few quests left but I had a ton of QOL mods installed. then steam pushed an update and my save was bricked.
How many mods did you have to install for this beast of a settlement? It's amazing! I made a parking garage settlement which took me 3 months, I can't imagine 1 year!
Quite a few. Mainly: conquest, workshop rearranged, scrap everything, place everywhere, snappy house kit, kuro tab, wrk, cvc, wasteland garage and capital wasteland
@@SirBalz Is conquest in any sort of stable state? It's exactly what I need, but I've read there are a number of bugs

As a person who prides myself on being a pretty good builder of settlements in Fallout 4 can I say, this is ridiculously good 👍
Thanks a lot! Always nice to get positive feed back from other creators
I love this! I had a similar, but much smaller build in this area. It's so fun to utilize the vertical space you have to play around with here. Amazing work!
Thank you! Building up is always more interesting than sprawing horizontaly. Plus, it fits a screenshot that much better
What area is it I am trying to fing good spot for starting at building
It's a stretch of highway at the center the map. Not a vanilla location though, I used the mod conquest to set up a workshop there
@@xtremlukas4971Greygarden can be built up damn near just like this on the vanilla game.
This video needs many more likes and subs. Amazing work.
I'm always so happy to see anything Fallout 4 related, especially settlement builds, amazing job on the build and video.
Dude... DUDE!... *slow clap* ... In all truth absolutely magnificent! I love it! I have tried to make things "nice". You took it here and made the only true oasis of human ingenuity in the wasteland... Better than the institute by far.
Thanks a lot, man! Really glad you liked it that much 😁
Stuff like this was what I stuck with Fo4 for so long for. Wonderful work, you’ve really outdone yourself with this, Bethesda should take notes - this is how you make a settlement that looks used and populated
This shouldve been in the vanilla game. 100% wow... 👍👍👍 this settlement is way more detailed than most of the Bethesda vanilla locations
This is amazing dude. You should upload this as a mod (if that's possible) this city puts the base game towns to shame.
If not a mod at least a savefile or a transfer settlements blue print, is by any chance the settlement built on Graygarden because of the overpass? If so It should be called Gray City or the Great Gray
@@llollosxd7791 I agree. I like the name Great Gray
This looks straight out of a mod! You really worked yourself out of this one, if anything this seems like a area that the bleachers DLC sized mod would offer! Really fits the aesthetic it really does, above all tho this was defo worth for a year of work
Thanks! I wish I knew how to turn it into a mod myself. With quests and all that. But that's just not within my skill set
Thanks! Freeway sounds kind of fitting. I thought of calling it The Underpass
@@SirBalz well if you don’t know how to mod. Have you consider sending your save file to a modder? With this amount of detail. I think they gladly try to make some story out of this
Makes me want to try doing something like this with terminator style of sort.....
This dam awesome inspiration
another great construction we never get bored watching your video it's a huge job I liked to go around😊👍
Thanks, mate! I always strive to make the edits entertaining
Absolutely AWESOME no words to do it justice. The time and patience it took is beyond belief. I see I'm not alone in my addiction to this game.
What the hell settlement is this?? Thsi is incredible! Not even just the fact that youve made this settlement, but the fact youre showing it off so well in high res and full frame rate. Beautiful settlement, it makes me wanna restart my playthrough just to build again
I think he has noclip on
Looks like Greygarden, but it's a different overpass. Not a settlement in the vanilla game.
What in the name of fallout!!!! I'm very impressed. Ya did the best I have ever seen. Very nice.
The amount of effort and lore revolving around this city is tremendous,
If there was a mod or any games with, you have a tremendous amount of skills to work out lore or placement designs
This is so cool,
i think i felled in love-
Awww. Thanks a lot! Spent a little longer on this one than most others. Putting in a little extra really pays off it seems
This is absolutely amazing. All my settlers got nice square boxes to stay in at best.
"And they better be happy to not be in the fallout rain!" :P
Only you Sir would have the Balz to attempt this 😅
Seriously though, I would never have looked at an overpass and thought of this, great location.
Love all the details and npc placement, very lively. 👍
Ahahahah! Perfect comment
Fantastic!! THIS is why I love Settlement Building! Definitely sending this to a few people.
Thank you, friend! Appreciate that!
As much as I love your videos, I wish they were longer! I'd love to have more time to appreciate all the details of every room and such in these settlements, but the videos are only ever a few minutes long!
Amazing.
Thanks
You should go and find a job as architect, its all about vision, cash in your talent honestly!
A little late for that. But I appreciate it, brother
I absolutely heart the way you perfectly adapt into pre-existing structures/assets and make them better and put them into good use.
I can already picture you going crazy on those planets in Starfield 🤣
I usually like doing it from scratch. But some existing structures in game just have the it factor
I don't know. I need to see some decent outpost mods first. Cause the vanilla system is nothing but placing down prefabs. Not a lot I can do with that
One hell of a settlement man, definitely one of the most impressive builds I've seen, where did you build this beast at?
Thank you! It's a random stretch of highway around the center of the map. I used the mod conquest to set up three custom placed workshops there
It's a real city. I'm so impressed by your design and effort.
Super cool build mate! I love the potted plant in the basketball hoop.

If this doesn’t get turned into a mod then I’ll be sad. This build is amazing
I don't have the technical skill set to turn these builds into mods unfortunately
@@SirBalzbut you can make a blueprint so ppl can try to load it in their games

Dude, sick settlement. Great work.
You did well. This is one of the greatest settlement I saw. :)
We complain a lot about games these days, but videos like this make me step back and realize how far we've come. I remember standing in line for the OG Xbox for HOURS and how overwhelming the excitement was from the first Halo game.. now we're making our own games within games. Rewriting the story to play out how WE want. The training wheels have finally come off, the playing card is in the spokes, and we're wild and free all over again baby. Lets GO. Super awesome settlement, dude.
I love games that allow you create within them. Linear ones I'll just watch a youtube playthrough of, have nothing to add to it

That is absolutely amazing great work!!
Thank you very much!
I don't even care for settlement builds, but this is so beautiful. The way you presented it is the icing on the cake, but this would have dropped my jaw to the floor even if it had just been some guy walking around in it getting sidetracked all the time. This is unfuckwithably epic.
It certainly makes me look at my Greygarden "builds" (lots of turrets on the highway, the end) in a different light.
Very well done, and thanks for making it such a neat video. I do not want these 3 minutes back, in fact I'll watch it again now :)

This is what we need for the next fallout games. Unique places for settlement building like this destroyed highway totally fits in the fallout universe. Good job, it looks like as if it’s been worked on for more than a year!
