I'm glad Dan sent me here out of all his suggestions this is the best so far. SO fucking wholesome and I love it! Guys like Hidenori gave me an awesome childhood via video games.
went into rabbit hole from watching NES games on youtube, then someone playing Contra soundtrack on metal guitar version, and curious about the original composer, and found this gem. full respect, Maezawa-san!
Truely a great acknowledgement to Chris. When the composer says "this is what I heard in my mind". Better than just a fantastic cover. This is bringing the music out of the 8-bit technology and allowing us to hear it clean. Thank you Chris.
its very interesting to hear straight from the original composer "this was the style of music i was thinking about when making it" when hearing a remix. it really makes me wish to hear all the sorts of old game music using the "intended" instruments
Incredible video, I wonder how in 14 years I somehow never stumble upon that despite following every related videos and suggestion when it came to jump from channel to channel in anything retro and specially regarding the NES. Anyway that is not important, better late than never, the spectacle was way worth it. What we see here is a true master worthy of his name, yet shy as a child and hesitant on expressing his emotion to graphically, I'm amazing at that mindset, inherently speaks of how respectable the author is both as a person and an artist. What better hommage to your efforts when the composer himself says that what you did was exactly the instrumental he had in mind when originally designing the song. That's when you know you nailed the whole spirit right. Kudos.
Wow, it's amazing to see the man that created my favorite video game themes of all time. His comment about your song being what he was in-visioning while creating the songs, wow what an honor. Good job on Bionic Commando by the way. Keep rockin' out the tasty jams dude.
I remember this video back in 2009. before then i was listening to vertexguy's covers all the time. Thanks Dan Avidan for giving me a throwback to this classic youtube video.
That is so completely awesome man, must be so incredibly inspiring to hear the original composer say that this is how he envisioned it when he created the original, and that your rendition is so true to his vision.
Epic! This guy could have been a huge metal/progressive rock star if he had been in the UK or something back in the 80s. I had a conversation with a friend about all the great NES soundtracks, our hunch was that it was composed by a handfull of Nippon dudes with mullet haircuts that were really, really into Iron Maiden. We googled it and realized it was mostly one guy; his credits are abundant! That man is like the Desmond Child of the ''pedal-to-the-metal-proto-daw-made-80s-electronic-nintendoverse-japanese-music''. Thanks for the interview; i would have never quite put a face to the name without it! Cheers!
That is very cool. It's not every day that a composer hears his work done EXACTLY how he/she thought of it when creating their work. My hat's off to u.
Holy shit, man! That has to be the greatest feeling in the whole wide world. He actually SAID that VG's version is exactly how he envisioned it!! Aaaaaah! I'm sooooo happy for you, man!! HUGE CONGRATULATIONS!! XD
dude thats a great honor..wow..i mean it's guys like Hidenori Maezawa that were the real pioneers for gaming. its the music from alot of the games that I'll always remember..and for him to have that kind of reaction to your work must feel amazing..
I was so happy to hear his complement I laughed with joy. I could only imagine how you must have felt hearing your name, and seeing how impressed he was. I wish all the people who covered game music worked as hard as you.
Ha that's awesome he said that you brought to life what he actually wanted it to sound like! What an Honor! He liked it better than the original it seemed. You ROCK!!!!!!
I'm trying to find more info on Mr. Maezawa and his studies with music composition. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse was especially influential to me. I'd love to know the styles of music he has studied as it is hard for me to put my finger on it. It's like a mix of rock, classical, progressive, ...and some chromatically based secret sauce I can't quite figure out ;)
being a metal music fan and musician myself.. and was in love with Contra when I was a kid and big reason of this love is it's soundtrack music.. I guess he is kind of influenced by asian rock themes beside neoclassical guitar shredding styles.. I see so much metal music influence
Wow man, that.. that must be some feeling eh? The way his face lit up after that first riff lol aw man I can only imagine - Kudos Chris! Keep up the good work! :D
Vertexguy, I fucking love you and am so effin envious. Envious to the point of HATRED. I just LOVE that we have here someone from the industry seeing the work and love that fans put to the series' they love. It just makes me tear up knowing that they can see us praising their work.
Oh wow, that is a great honor for him to know that the original composer enjoyed his version. It was nice to see how Maezawa's face lit up when he heard the first few notes. :)
wow, you must feel realized!!. Congratulations man!. What an honor because most of those composers dont know thata round there are guys like you who do excellent covers of their songs. But u deserve it, your contra cover is exceptionally good.... i Really wish you do a more complete contra megamedley, including the songs in jungle jam.
I really wanted to hear his thoughts on the solo that Kline added in. After hearing it, I can not "unhear" it. It is so perfect for the song and just fits right in.
Thats nearly the highest honor you can get for your work. Your work has caught the eyes and ears of the original composer of Contra, my gaming comrade. In time, you might compose a level theme for the next Contra game along side Hidenori Maezawa. I'll be kicking my own ass if your work gets the attention from Frank Klepacki and soon, you'll be a game musician legend. Chris Klein, I salute you!!
Thanks Dan for the recommendation
Yes
Oh, I didn't know Dan was a man of culture! Good to see you friends! Are you 19 and big Bois?
Indeed!
Grump Bump 2.0!! Thanks, Dan!
Came here as he was talking about it in there weird game compilation 2 :D
I'm glad Dan sent me here out of all his suggestions this is the best so far. SO fucking wholesome and I love it! Guys like Hidenori gave me an awesome childhood via video games.

Lol, I died when Hidenori was like... "wooooo"
Oh man, even after 20 YEARS... the music feels so refreshing. It really reminded me of my childhood days. Hidenori...Salute to you
Even after 30 Years Now, it still feels like from Yesterday
Truely a great acknowledgement to Chris. When the composer says "this is what I heard in my mind". Better than just a fantastic cover. This is bringing the music out of the 8-bit technology and allowing us to hear it clean. Thank you Chris.
bluesuncompanyman My mind blown.. thats how the greats do it
What a legend, if I ever meet him I want to tell him that my childhood was awesome because of him.
That’s probably the greatest compliment anyone could ever get.
Game Grumps brought me here.

DID YOU EVER EXPECT HIM TO HEADBANG TO YOUR TRIBUTE WHEN YOU STARTED TO ARRANGE IT?????? HOLY SHIT!!! YEAH!!!
thank you hidenori for making the one greatest run and gun music in gaming history we all are greatful that we own an NES.
Thank you Dan for the recommendation!!!
Can we talk about how sweet the interpreter sounds every time she says "hai"
So breathy. She sounds like a Japanese phone sex operator.
Haha... Dan and Aaron, thanks.
If shang-tsung likes It, so do I!!!!
lol. "why am I hearing this now?"
20 years and the song still rocks!!!!
That is so completely awesome man, must be so incredibly inspiring to hear the original composer say that this is how he envisioned it when he created the original, and that your rendition is so true to his vision.
This song is still one of the most memorable of all my childhood videogame tunes. Thank you for the music, Maezawa-san :D
Everyone like vertex guy and contra.thats a awesome mix of rock and action.Vertex guy is just amazing. =D
Love these kind of videos

Final stage "Alien's Lair" was the first math metal song I ever heard.
game grumps raid!
Hey, it's good ol' Jeremy Parish!
Love his videos! 😊
that was awesome beyond words
I wish i had skills like you to get this kind of reaction from someone as important as Maezawa-san, Congrats!!
If I was him I'd be crying endless tears of nostalgic joy!!! :'D
Agree with all of the comments, this game and the music that was put into it is one of a kind and will stay with me for my whole life!!!!
nice, energy of 20 years ago still leaves goose bumps

I believe Maezawa didn't composed Castlevania III, but rather Yukie Morimoto and Jun Funahashi. Maezawa only did sound programming as far as I know
I'd like to watch a big interview with this dude. Music from the Contra games still rocks.
Wow, what a honor, but rightfully deserved. Your renditions of VGM are amazing. Keep rocking Chris.
Thanks GG for bringing me here. Here's another treat; turn on youtube's close captioning for this video [cc].
Whoa. To hear that kind of comment is just awesome. You must be flying high, Chris. Congratulations.
Mr Hidenori Maezawa I love you!
Hidenori Maezawa was my hero when i was young. Now, Chris, you are my new hero.
Good Job with Bionic Commando too!
We need more of your guitar videos, they were amazing !
I envy the pride you must feel as an artist, to be validated by the creator. Congrats man.
I love how Hidenori jams at Chris' cover!
Wow man, that.. that must be some feeling eh? The way his face lit up after that first riff lol aw man I can only imagine - Kudos Chris! Keep up the good work! :D

No words to say how cool this really is. So much respect for both men. Just incredible.
Oh wow, that is a great honor for him to know that the original composer enjoyed his version. It was nice to see how Maezawa's face lit up when he heard the first few notes. :)
Old but good. Thanks Hidenori san.
at that time it was really great, Hidenori Maezawa is a genius he is one of the creator of the video games
this guy is a legend to create this music.
Man, you deserve a high five for that. You were just a fantastic musician, but now, you're the MAN!
wow, you must feel realized!!.
Congratulations man!. What an honor because most of those composers dont know thata round there are guys like you who do excellent covers of their songs.

Chris, brother! pls do a new version of contra theme - it's so awesome in your performance! btw really enjoyed reaction of the composer :)
He said that is what he heard in his mind when he made the Famicom song. That is about the best honor he could give.
How come everyone came to watch A Contra Soundtrack after watching GameGrumps!? How is that even possible! XD
That's awesome. Gotta love how Maezawa was just blown away by Vertexguy's version of the song.
Thats nearly the highest honor you can get for your work. Your work has caught the eyes and ears of the original composer of Contra, my gaming comrade.
