The Circle Drill is one of the Pride of the Southland Marching Band’s signature routines. It’s a hell of a thing to see in person. From what I hear, other bands have tried to replicate it over the years only to dissolve into a train wreck. The state of Tennessee was created and joined the federal union in 1796. 1794 was the date that the first school of what would eventually become the University of Tennessee was founded. So, technically, UT predates the state by around 2 years.
Most bands you see doing a similar drill to this often cut the difficulty by either cutting out the pass-through part of the Chattanooga Choo-Choo spiral & flower drill or they take out the flower bounce drill that makes it look like the petals are moving/rotating. The Pride doesn’t cut these difficult parts out which makes the drill even more impressive!
The University of Tennessee was established in 1794 (two years before the state). I cannot recommend hard enough the pregame show, which builds up to the famous "run through the T". I've been to so many games here growing up, and yet it still gives me chills every time.
Great!!! Love these college football games and tradition reactions! Although one of our rivals, Tennessee has a great, friendly fan base, a wonderful band and really strong traditions. Not too mention the adorable Smokey! The sound in that stadium is incredible, just awesome. Great reaction and a wonderful job to the Vol Marching Band. As a former Tiger Eye instructor and a new subscriber to your channel, I invite you to check out any Auburn Pregame show with Band Intro video or my favorite the Auburn University Metallica Halftime Light Show. The Metallica Show required some amazing work by various university departments. The University of Alabama had an Elvis show a few years back that was wonderful good, fielding rifles and sabres with an all female line. The University of Georgia always has a good halftime (just pick any one, lol) show and they have a "feature twirler" who is always extremely talented and a terrific drum line. LSU has the Golden Girls who are usually magnificent and I really like the way they sound. Check any of them out!!! Notice the difference between many SEC bands (flags, rifles, sabres, dancers, fire baton twirlers) and many of the more traditional, high precision drill groups like the wonderful Ohio State. Fun one. Thanks loads!
GO VOLS!! Fun fact: Dixieland Delight(the song that Bama plays) was written about Tennessee by the group called Alabama, technically it is our song lol.
Lyle, the first song the crowd sang was "Rocky Top Tennessee". The 2nd was the school alma matter (I think - hard to hear it). It would've been better if the camera had been looking straight onto the field from the "press box" instead of at an angle! "Go Vols"! Love your reactions & have for many years!🤗😘
Tennessee fan here, fun fact about "Rocky Top" it is both the most revered and most hated fight song in college football. LoL. Another fun fact about the Tennessee "T" you will find that orange "T" flag flying no matter where you go here in the states, and in some of the weirdest places overseas. Hear-tell there is even a water tower in Afghanistan painted Tennessee Orange with a big white "T" on it. You'll find Tennessee fans/alums all over the globe, proudly flying their Tennessee "T" flags during football season. Just look for that Tennessee Orange in late August/early September, to find them, we are everywhere.
This brings brings back a bunch of sweet memories, Lyle. My husband attended the University of Tennessee’s School of Law in the mid 80s. We attended all home football games. I can still see my little daughter, Rachael, in her tiny UT cheerleading outfit with the orange ribbons in her blonde pigtails. Life seems to pass so quickly does it not? Even though Rachael was very young, the love of East Tennessee stayed with her, and she now lives in Johnson City Tennessee. She’s 40 years old with two children of her own! Since I was a band jock, myself, I always adored UT band’s presentations. Did I tell you that I was a piano and french horn double major in college? Although I attended on scholarships, I decided to drop out and marry Thomas. I’ve never regretted it though. He’s a somewhat fabulous kind of person.😁 Thank for posting and responding to this. You know what kind of sap I am. It had me in tears there for a bit. Hope you have a great weekend, my dear.❤️
1794 is the date University of Tennessee was founded. Just prior they played Rocky Top, one of the 3 state songs of Tennessee and unofficial school song. The one played afterwards is the official school song.
But it IS freakin’ hard without that experience! When I was in High School, my senior year, our marching band show had us floating an ever expanding circle across the field in the opener. It took this side of forever to finally get it right. LOL. Good memories. That show won us multiple trophies and accolades. A nice way to end high school.❤ Oh, and I have always loved the name “Jedediah”. Is that your actual name?
I've done this drill. Pride of the Southland alum 2016-2019. We start learning this drill around the end of September or early October for the Alabama game. The chart book is almost an inch thick. The interlocking circle set is literally taken 2 steps at a time. This is the one show nobody forgets. You should check out the Tennessee pregame
I’m also an alum who marched this drill and was one of the unfortunate people who had to do the pass-throughs between two sousaphones. I luckily avoided any injuries, but there were multiple times during practice when certain passthroughs would end bloody because of the small margin of error 😅. Miss it dreadfully though!

They are singing the UT Alma Mater "“On a hallowed hill in Tennessee / Like a beacon shining bright"......
Pride of The Southland Band! Now we’re talking! Season ticket holder from 1992-2004. Miss those days!
Stumbled across this today and it put a big lump in my throat.

Tennesse has 12 official state songs.
You really need to see the band intro video to the Kentucky 2024 night game. You will not regret it.
I’ve done this drill. It’s not too difficult, you just need years and years of experience.

Just imagine...many members of the marching band had parents that, too, were in this marching band.
At around 7:50 that is the UT Alma Mater hymn.

Yeah. Funny thing is.... Cesar and Ashley have the last name "De La Rosa" but they're not related. They are the stars of this video 😊
EVERYONE knows Rocky Top. Just depending if you love it or hate it depends on if you live in Tennessee or not.
