Today we will visit the beautiful and fantastic Kalmar Castle (Swedish: Kalmar slot), in Kalmar, Kalmar län, Sweden. It was a beautiful spring day. I would like to point out that all drone footage was filmed according to the Swedish restricted airspace regulations and with the permission of the air traffic control at Kalmar Airport, since the whole area is a controlled and restricted airspace. Towards the end of the video, I have included some photos of what it looks like inside the castle.

Let’s talk a little bit about the history of Kalmar Castle.
Around 1180 a round defensive tower was built at Kalmarsund and a harbor constructed on the site where Kalmar Castle now stands. The tower’s purpose was to protect the area from attacks by pirates and other enemies. By the beginning of the 1200s, Kalmar was established as a city.
At the end of the thirteenth century King Magnus Ladulås had a new fortress built with a curtain wall, round corner towers and two square gatehouses surrounding the original tower. Located near the site of Kalmar's medieval harbor, it has played a crucial part in Swedish history since its initial construction as a fortified tower in the 12th century.
One of the most significant political events in Scandinavia took place at Kalmar Castle in 1397, when the Kalmar Union was formed - a union of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (including Finland), organized by Queen Margaret I of Denmark. The union also worked as a counterweight to the German Hanseatic League. With the coronation of Gustav Vasa in Sweden in 1523, the union was formally dissolved. During the Swedish rebellion against Denmark in 1520, the fortress was commanded by Anna Eriksdotter (Bielke), who at the death of her spouse, Johan Månsson (Natt och Dag), in the middle of the rebellion against Denmark in 1520, took control over his fiefs and defended Kalmar against Denmark.
In the 16th century Kalmar Castle was expanded and renovated under the direction of King Gustav I and in the hands of his sons King Erik XIV and King Johan III, monarchs of the House of Vasa, giving it a Renaissance feel fit for a king, the feel it still has today. Both Erik XIV and Johan III hired artists and carpenters from Europe to modernise the castle architecture and decorations.
During the Kalmar War 1611-1613, governor Krister Some gave up the castle to the Danes on 3 August 1611. He was branded a traitor and according to tradition, his face is the one engraved on the staircase before the eastern section of the castle. The Danes held the castle until 1613. After the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, the castle was no longer needed to protect the old border and it lost its strategic location. It was therefore no longer needed for military defense. Royal visits became increasingly rare and the grand halls were used for other purposes. There were prison cells and even a distillery. During the Kalmar war the Kalmar Castle suffered heavy damage and was badly damaged by a fire in 1642.
Repairs had begun but from the end of the seventeenth century the castle was allowed to fall into disrepair.

Thank you, Bjorn, for showing us this extraordinary castle. I have to admit I was awestruck. We live in Canada and there are no historical venues that date anywhere near a 1000+ years old. Indeed there is no written history that old, either... The most amazing thing to us is how well Kalmar Castle is maintained. It must cost a great deal to keep it in such great condition. The interior photos are stunning. I sense that you have a great deal of experience taking photos of this quality. The drone footage in your video is as close to perfectly executed as I have ever seen. It has been our extreme pleasure to watch this high-quality video. You Impressed me. I almost did not come over to watch due to the large number of meaningless comments we get on our channel from people who don't watch the videos. They are just fishing for a view on their channel. We have recently had to give up on watching everyone all the time, as it is impossible... You have returned my faith in TH-cam. Thank you more than I can say for creating this masterpiece... From what I know, this is the best preserved castle in Sweden, as most old castles burned down at one time and were never rebuilt. I know how you feel about the lack of historical sites/buildings, as it is the same in Australia. One of the reasons I wanted to film all these places here in Sweden, is to have memories after we move, as we don't know if we ever will be able to return to/visit Sweden again. Thank you for your kind comment on the video quality, I have to admit I'm just a beginner to this TH-cam and video making, starting up in December 2020, so a bit over a year, but I'm learning. I bought the drone a year ago and I really enjoy using it for my videos, as it gives such a different perspective of the object to film. Hi Paul, yes there were a lot of pirates back in the old days here. In the old cemetery in Kalmar, there are several graves where pirates have been put to rest. Some of them even have a skull as marking on the tombstone. Thank you for watching and have a great weekend.
