  • Saints head coach Sean Payton shares the story of general manager Mickey Loomis recruiting him to New Orleans, despite Payton’s interest to accepting a position with the Green Bay Packers. Payton goes on to discuss the Saints’ first home game at the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. Plus Drew Brees and Loomis reflects on the importance of winning that first home game and the steps Payton took to prepare his team.

      Louisiana ranks 50th out of 50 states (per USNEWS, 2018). We are officially ranked below Mississippi. The rating is based on education, healthcare, job opportunities...everything. Sean Payton is simply speaking honestly. In the words of a Few Good Men (to anyone who disagrees with S P): You can't handle the truth.

      Well I mean I'd have rather gone to the Packers BACK THEN over the Saints, too, it's not like he's from here, he had no loyalty or special interest in the team at the time but thank GOD he changed his mind. No way to know for sure what would've happened in an alternate reality but I actually part way think that he had more success with the Saints and will enjoy a better, stronger legacy than if he went to a more established club like the Packers. Sean Payton is basically, arguably, the #1 reason that the Saints are the opposite of a joke anymore. He's taken a lousy team and transformed them into legitimate perennial playoff contenders, and I think going forward (especially if Drew plays a few more seasons) we'll not only see more playoffs, we'll likely see more Super Bowls, and basically I think the next 10 years of the NFL if Coach plays the draft well enough we might actually be the next NFL dynasty team, similar to the Patriots, something Sean Payton has publicly said he'd like to set up WHEREVER he goes. Thank God we have him. Truly.

    I am not a football fan, don't understand the game, can't follow the ball, etc. But I watched that first game , from my refuge up in Washington State, and I personally felt reborn. It will always stay with me as one of the most important moments of my life. I am so grateful to Sean Payton, to Drew Brees, to Steve Gleason, to the whole team, for the huge part they played in New Orleans' recovery. Without them, something might have existed here, but it wouldn't have been the #NOLA we loved. Thank you, thank you, thank you all!

    For everyone mad at Packers for not hiring Sean Payton exactly how many Superbowls has Sean Payton and Mike McCarthy won in that time period and do you really think Aarons diva mentality would work well with Sean Payton?
    You gotta remember Sean is the guy who kept his options open a few off seasons to get pay raises and extensions. I remember he was linked with Cowboys and he said I'm open to options and boom he gets an extension and pay raise. LA Rams job is open and boom extension and pay raise. Would Payton and Rodgers mesh well. For the longest both McCarthy and Payton were the same. Great offenses but bad defenses wasting a Hall of Fame QBs time. While Mickey Lomis was willing to sign young stars to large contracts McCarthy had Ted Thompson who wouldn't spent a dime for a player under 30 in free agency. McCarthy had to publicly call him out.

    • @GG-lr3gv
      @GG-lr3gv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Payton would have also 100% stuck with Favre. McCarthy was given the job specifically because he wanted to work with Rodgers. Payton is a good offensive mind but in all honesty he hasn’t done anything that special in terms of an actual coaching job during a season since 09, which ironically was the year Favre’s Vikings gifted him a trip to the Super Bowl. McCarthy at the very least pieced together wins with an average NFL roster, Payton has been working with All-Pros on both sides of the ball year after year. There’s only two truly great coaches working in the NFL today anyway and that’s Belichick and Reid, maaaaaybe Doug Pederson.

      i guess you must've taken your previous comment down, but conspiracy theorists aren't normally the most reliable people to receive info from. lets make it clear that the gentrification process was done only post katrina, that's an actual fact, secondly job placement has increased in the city whiles corruption has paid a toll there just like any other major city, the overall political structure is still climbing to its potential.

      The funny thing is that New Orleans doesn't have school shootings like those so-called safe places. Every city has its problems; most try 2 hide them while NOLA's is put on display (mainly by the national media). New Orleans has the best performing public high school (Ben Franklin) in the state, but many people don't know that. Never believe the media!

    2010 The Saints won because the league thought it necessary given hurricane Katrina's aftermath. The Saints won with nefarious locker room deals and injury bets (Bounty Gate) which coaches were involved too. Their play was condoned by the league as officials turned a blind eye to what otherwise should have produced suspensions on numerous late hits by the same offenders all season. They ended up keeping the title even after the league levied massive fines and massive suspensions for their illicit play. Ironic, if an Olympic gold medalist tests positive for "doping", he's stripped of the title. The 2009 Saints just proved New Orleans is a shithole which mother nature tried to clean up with a large scale bath! The entire nation will forever know your SuperBowl win was a sympathy ploy.

      As a Detroiter I understand the magnitude of Peyton and Brees, and those 2 together built up a great team and I 100percent agree with you that ultimately those 2 going to the Saints was the start of the Saints saving the city! That firs game back at the Superdome vs Atlanta Falcons on MNF was magical and when the Falcons punt got blocked and then the Saints ran it for a touchdown and then the place erupted, I have never heard anything like that in my life. Watching and hearing the Superdome crowd gave me goosebumps and I cried my eyes out. I felt that as I watching this magical moment that new Orleans is back and maybe even better than ever! It was a privilege to watch that night and to see how a community and football team came together for the love of the Superdome being back, and the love of the game and most importantly the love of the city, I'm tearing up now writing this. Although im a die-hard Lions Fan I'm proud to say that I'm now a huge fan of the Saints and the city, together y'all unstoppable!

    They gave Mr. Benson credit for keeping the team in New Orleans when he passed, but the person who actually did that was this gentleman right here. If he and Brees don’t light it up in 2006 and reignite ticket sales, they’re the San Antonio Saints today.

      Kelvin Ordon I didn’t pull that city out of the air. Mr. Benson made his fortune in car dealerships and banking in the San Antonio area. In 2005, the Saints played 3 of their home games in the Alamodome. Commissioner Tagliabue had to step in and force the organization to play the majority of their games in Louisiana at Tiger Stadium otherwise they’d have played all the home games in San Antonio.

      I would honestly go as far to say Peyton and Brees are above all of those coaches/qbs not just for football but no other Qb/head coach have ever meant so much to a city. They kept the saints in Nola when everyone was looking for an excuse to move them. Drew and Peyton brought back a team, a franchise, and the entire city/ state. No other duo matches up to what they mean to the city. When drew retires they will build a statue of him the next day. Sometimes things are bigger than football and the impact brees and Peyton have had in Nola is unmatched.

      +Mr. Don Sean Payton is regarded as the finest offensive mind in the NFL. Mike McCarthy is an average coach who's benefited from having a generational player at QB. I still have no idea how McCarthy even got an interview for that job. His stint as OC in San Francisco was a disaster. Most Green Bay fans would gladly take Payton over McCarthy.

    • @Mr_Don1
      @Mr_Don1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@Narrate918 those regards are from people who don't know football, or people who just simply have biases. "Average coaches" don't win Super Bowls. Do you think that Sean Payton would be viewed the same way if he didn't have Brees? I'm not sure why people regard Rodgers as so great, and Brees not so much, when they are basically equals. I would probably give Brees an edge, to be honest. They are both great, but just because Rodgers has a stronger arm and more mobility doesn't necessarily make him a better QB. Is Payton a good coach? Yes, but as great as he has been of an offensive coach (and not always...I wouldn't consider a great passing game without a running game a 'great offense'), he has been almost equally bad with his defenses. McCarthy was a great coordinator who went on to become a good head coach in his own right...just the same as Payton has. Perception often times isn't reality.

    • @Narrate918
      @Narrate918 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Mr. Don So much wrong with your response but the fact that you think Brees is better than Rodgers proves that you have no clue what you're talking about. No one with half a brain would have made that statement. Just wow.

    • @Mr_Don1
      @Mr_Don1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@Narrate918 are you serious? It's not wrong or right...just a difference of opinion. Just look at the numbers, dude. I conceded the fact that Rodgers has a stronger arm and is more mobile than Brees. Yet, Brees is still able to put up equal to or better numbers than Rodgers, with less physical ability. What does that say, do you think? If you are a Packers' fan, then your opinion on them makes sense. Rodgers has a ways to go to catch up with Brees...not in actual ability, but in putting up numbers, and skins on the wall. If he does it, then I will agree with you, but he's pretty injury prone, too. That takes away from his greatness, in my opinion. He has to shake that if he wants to be ahead of Brees when they are both done playing.

Up until Payton and Brees arrived, they only had 5 playoff appearances and 1 playoff win. Even during the pre-Payton/Brees days they were fun to watch but could find a billion ways to lose games at the end and crush your soul. I've seen them blow 35-7 leads 34-14 leads, lose with hail mary's and alot more. They would beat teams they had no business beating and lose to teams they should have dominated. What a crazy ride it has been. The worst tenure for me was when Mike Ditka was head coach from 1997-1999. God he sucked!
