Agreed, that’s a slick tool! I’ve only ever seen the dies you tap (carefully!) with a mallet. I’m referring to the race installer he used to do the top and bottom races before installing the bearings onto the stem.
I’ve always enjoyed your videos. This one doesn’t disappoint either. One question, when you installed the bearing onto the triple tree I couldn’t help but notice that you didn’t “properly” pack the bearing. You just smeared the outside of the rollers. Is there a reason for that?
Again, I really enjoy all your videos. On my humble Sporty build, I traded my Hugger fork tubes, for the standard tubes,.That extra 50mm of suspension travel, with shims, and thicker oil really gave me a better, low budget ride. you would probably have to slide the tubes up the trees for your build, which would compromise the finished look. Keep up the great work!

Hey Renzo, good to hear from you brother, hope you're both well?! Glad you're enjoying the project, we wanted to take the look of a cruiser bike completely away from the Harley so lifting the back end with a taller back wheel and higher suspension will, hopefully, make it look even better in the next video... I can't quite remember the exact size of the garage, it's quite a large place which we both share for our respective work, I wish it had large open doors to roll a car in, and if it did, I imagine it would maybe be 3-4 cars wide and perhaps 2 cars deep, but sadly with just a regular door it's only any good for bikes, which is perhaps why the rent is affordable! Take care and have a fabulous weekend both of you, D&Px

I guess what I'm trying to say is you and Penny are bringing a lot of joy to us with this project. Many thanks indeed ! God bless and stay well. ❤👍👍
I agree completely, Mr. Rick! It's enjoyable watching because you can clearly see the drive to do as good a job as he can do, in even the smallest areas. Machine-like perfection isn't nearly as interesting as seeing someone do their very best work because they understand how satisfying it is to know that "I did my very best". That love of your work shines through in the finished project. It got that way by doing your very best on the small stuff AND the big stuff. That's what makes a project stand out. This is FAR more enjoyable than watching someone bolt on brand new CNC perfection made in a sterile factory. Del's scooter looks ALIVE.
Thank you Rick, if it doesn't sound conceited, then I know exactly what you mean, I picked up a guy once building a Chevy Nova from a 4 door wreck in to a 2 door cool custom car at home in his garage in Canada over 2yrs, and I never wanted it to end! Hey Tommy, thank you for those kind words and I think you've hit the nail on the head, I'm just an amateur in my garage building myself a custom bike to enjoy, it's great to see our passion comes across in the videos and can, we hope, inspire people to tackle their own projects! We appreciate your kind support.
@@Moonfleet41 Hi Del. It's funny that you mentioned the video of the Nova project. I watched that series also and was amazed at the results that gentleman achieved working from a small home garage and dealing with the less than ideal Canadian weather. There were times that I thought he had gotten in over his head but he certainly proved me wrong. So many talented people out there sharing their skills with us.
im packing the bike for a 4 day trip from Iowa to Colorado, dad riding his Indian and me on my Victory. But i saw this video popup. and had to take 10 minutes out to watch it. Ride safe. thanks for the video.

Hey great videos!! Love the channel! I broke my pinch bolt hole on my lower yolk. I’m pretty sure it’s cast aluminum can I have that welded??? Thank you and keep on keepin’ on!!!
To weld that would be a job for a professional TIG welder, and they will be able to look at it and make a judgement..! Good luck with it buddy, i hope you can get it fixed.
Thanks for such generous comments Byron, there are many beautiful custom Harleys in the world and this will by no means be a show bike, just a fresh looking example with a style change... have a great weekend Sir! D&Px
I was wondering what year motor could I fit in a 1986 sportster frame just picked it up it still has the stick motor but the crank case is cracked and I don’t wanna put another carbureted motor in there
Fuel injected engines are all rubber mounted, and yours is rigid mounted, so im not sure what's needed for that conversion.. never looked into it mate !
Nice work Del, I'm impressed with the bearing press too. I will look into getting one and ask a couple of mates if they fancy a shared ownership as it's expensive for something that will have such infrequent use. You are one of the main inspirations for my plans to build a custom bike, thank you 😀👍
Hi Michael, that's a great idea, we used to call those 'club tools', something you may only use once in a blue moon, but shared between a group of mates they'll get a fair amount of use overall! We're doing a great deal on them through Spanner Monkey, a lot cheaper than buying direct from Sealey, so here's the link if you need it mate: www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/steering-bearing-press-motorcycle-119015?search=SMC3&description=true
@@Moonfleet41 thanks Del, I will check that out. I'm fortunate enough to work for an automotive paint supplier and the boss sells to staff at cost, plus a little bit, and we have an account with a sealey main distributor. I will compare prices and hopefully get one!
hi Del, just wondering is that front tyre on the right way round ? I always thought looking over the bars the tread pattern arrows face forward and not back!
No mate, that's the rear wheel, on the front, the arrows face rearward ... trust me, the direction arrow is correct on the side wall and as you see when we fit the rear, that is opposed to the front, so those tread grooves, looking down on it, do point to the front.
Thanks mate 👍, until I got them thrown on, I really wasn't sure how they'd look, but I agree with you, they totally define the new style and I'm really happy with the riding position, even just sat on the frame!
@@Moonfleet41 nice, I'm thinking about putting a 21 inch wheel on my 2012 xl1200c, it currently has the original 16 inch wheel with fat tires. Have you seen any with this change?
When it comes to v twin bikes, I’ll openly admit I’ve never been on one but those clip ons look like they would make this one fun to ride! That potential for a little extra leverage on the bars might be worth the risk of doing it.
Sure thing buddy, more direct contact with the forks, a taller back wheel and taller suspension, will seriously quicken up the steering too... so, yes, I'm hoping this will be a real hoot to ride, specially with the rear set foot controls!!!! Have a great weekend!
I am NOT going to try and second guess what this is going to end up looking like!! I am just going to be really patient and enjoy each little slice as it comes. Honest. Really. (Polished alloy tank, chromed mini guards, race hump....!)🤣🤣🤣. Nice one Del. I remember rattle canning in the shed episodes!! Deservedly come a long way, mate. Love to penny pitstop.
Thanks Phil, that's a great style suggestion, I have to admit, I haven't even thought of the tail hump/unit styling, I can't afford a polished alloy tank, there is a company locally that could make one, but it's just not in the budget, they're ferociously expensive... I've just ordered the rear set foot controls and the price of those was eye watering enough!!! But gonna do my best to create a unique and recognisable custom bike! Have a great weekend mate.
Great vid as usual Delboy, good to see her coming together now. Why don`t you use those clip-ons as they are, do you think the slotted spacing ring is not strong or secure enough to use on the road?. I know you said about being on a bit of a tight budget, so why not use the clip-ons as they are, it will save a fair amount which you can spend on other things?.
Thank Neil, i have been thinking about it as i do like the lifted bracket to make them a little higher.. and yes the spacer rings are more then secure enough to use.. but they are still 7/8th" bar diameter, and will need to be 1" diameter if im going to use them.. so I'd need to make some new bar tubes to go into the brackets..! perfectly possible, so it's definitely a consideration..!
Thanks Robin 👍, left a link to it in the description if you fancy one for yourself, they are a far calmer and safer way than hammering bearing cups in.
I'm starting to think the clip ons may work now I see the context. Even at this stage your vision is becoming clear 👍👍 BTW, great to see you in such good health ... that's what a good woman can do for you 😊
In this age where everyone seems to be sporting 18" apehangers im glad to see clipons! Cant wait to see the end results. You really like Wiha tools it seems:p
Another good video, wish I had your patience, so meticulous, gob on a stick is going to be hard pressed to find anything at all to pick at, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks You two ...... been watching for some years now and it never gets boring, and totally enjoy your attention to detail. I think it calms my OCD Lmao. Plus I love the fact that it shows that you CAN take a tired and weathered bike and make it not only look new but also make it your own......rather than just going out and buying what ever the newest trend is at the local dealer. Plus gives the average Joe/Jane a nudge towards do it yourself, give it a go and learn something,. Not too mention you have created a massive how to library, over the years. Bit of a legend ..... just saying.
Hey Andy, thanks mate for those wonderful, kind words of support... we started out all those years ago to make some videos just for sharing a service procedure on a Harley, when I saw how much they charge at the dealer, especially when it's housekeeping service work that anyone can do at home with some basic hand tools... and things kinda grew from there! Great to have you along and we do appreciate all your loyal support, and it's always good to hear from you, have a great weekend, D&Px
Great video Del. The cafe racer is coming together nicely. I can already imagine a cafe tail section and shorten front mud guard installed. Have a great weekend.
I’m so thoroughly impressed by how much care you take in putting it all together. I can’t help banging everything around and chipping paint left and right. Great video!
Thank you so much mate, I know what you mean, but I learned a long time ago to deliberately not focus on the finished job, or getting things done, just focus specifically on each tiny task, even if it's installing a nut and bolt, and don't think about anything else till that's done!... it's a lot more enjoyable and the great part is you look up one day and suddenly your bike's finished (without chips and scratches!!)
Wouldn't they be a cheeky set of bars, but the arthritis in the elbows would probably play havoc at our age aye brother?? Chat soon, have a great weekend!
Nice video Del and Penny. Job well done mate, love the look with the clip on. Very sweet steering head bearing install set you have, now you have got me thinking, more money LoL . Penny and you have a great weekend and stay safe. Cheers
Thanks mate👍, it is one of those occasional tools you never really use that much.. but when you need it, it's perfect for making a calm and tidy install of those bearing cups.. for years i worked with some threaded bar and sockets, but in the end, decided to invest.! Have a peaceful weekend too mate, and take care.. D&Pxx
Looking good mate, I like the way you've decided to go with something different like the clip ons instead of the usual apes of T bars.... Not that there anything wrong with them...
Thanks mate👍, i wanted this to be a bike that's really good fun to ride, ive had a lot of Harleys over the years, and this one will be different for sure. !
Thanks Gary, not concourse or a show bike, but it's satisfying taking a tired old bike and giving a fresh lease of life, best recycling there is aye?! Have a great weekend there, sun is shining here and life is good, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 I, am at my garage in morning to do some pre checks for our ride around the stunning views of Scotland, hope you and Penny have a great weekend
They shouldn't do mate, the Nightsters run under slung mirrors, which would hang lower than these bars, and they don't touch the tank... Harley tanks are pretty narrow and many custom Sportsters run clip-ons successfully, it's all just a case of setting it all up once the tank's fitted!
Hey Del and Penny, great video! I was wondering how clip-ons would look on this Harley and the answer is - better than I thought they might. It's a real pleasure to see this project coming back together and I look forward to seeing more progress. Take care and be safe, both of you!
Thanks buddy, am glad you approve, they're a unique look and very different from anything Harley have ever made which is all the more reason to do it maybe! We appreciate your kind support.
This was one of your best videos to watch, so satisfying. I'm not sure about the clamp-ons but you have surprised us many times before so I'm just curious of your vision.
Hmm, clip-ons, 1200 V-twin, built to go round corners & bigger than a certain cartoon character's famous Norvin? - it's gotta be Hagrid's new bike! - call it the 'Hogriwart Superior' & then Sample the oft murky world of copyright infringimacation : )x
🙏 I consider you "a brother from a different mother". 🍻cheers. That mushy stuff said😆, what are your initial thoughts about the clip-on's, considering no seat or tank yet? 🤔 Have a great weekend folks.
Thank buddy, that's very kind of you. I love the clip-ons already, even sitting just on the frame the stretch is right, and not cramped at all.. time will tell, and obvously ill share the whole journey with you.
At 2:21 I thought, nah.. those handlebars are too small. Great work as always!!!

@@tommylitchfield3450 Well said sir !
im packing the bike for a 4 day trip from Iowa to Colorado, dad riding his Indian and me on my Victory. But i saw this video popup. and had to take 10 minutes out to watch it. Ride safe. thanks for the video.
Have fun both, take care on the roads and enjoy your time together!
Dude, I just noticed, 198,000! I remember 13,000. Shows hard work, dedication, and knowledge pays off. Congratulations. Proud to be here since the near beginning.
Thank you kindly Brother, before an awesome musician wrote and performed for us our very first theme tune, we were in the wilderness, you helped to define our Channel so you were the beginning Brother... thank you so much for such wonderful support, we hope you're keeping safe and well and as always, stay in touch, D&Pxx
that front end looks great. Have you decided on the bars yet?
Thanks Mike.. i like the look that's for sure, and they're not cramped at all. but i don't have to decide for a long time yet, bars are a great way to fine tune any ride as im sure you'll agree.!
Hello Del, so pleased I found your channel. So many past uploads to watch. Superb presentation and filming. Thank-you. David.
Welcome David!, glad to have you aboard, enjoy the content, we've been at this for almost 12 years, something like 1500 video uploads, so plenty to enjoy. !
Haven't watched for a few years 😕
However the increase in top equipment is fantastic.
Welcome back!
@@Moonfleet41 Thank you for replying. You're obviously driven and your renovations from day 1 have been meticulous. It's been inspirational to watch your videos.... though my efforts fall short.... except for getting a bike back on the road to pass it's MOT. Thank you.
Ooh! you got all cool tools!!
Wow!!! Great project!!! Now a unicycle!! Looks gonna become quite different bike soon!!
Loving the build so far. Looking great Del. What a great filming, editing, bike workshop environment and tool collection you've built up successfully over the years. All because you and Pen have worked so hard and gained a huge fan base with all your tips, tricks, builds, stripdowns and warm friendly advice and help. 🇬🇧👍
Thanks for your kind words mate, it's been a long road and a fabulous journey so far, looking forward to keeping on keeping on!
Your videos are inspiring me to finish the restoration on a 1972 Yamaha 125 Enduro that I started to restore nearly three years ago when I retired. Thank you for the inspiration!
That is awesome sir, Great to hear we have inspired you.. have fun with it and enjoy the journey..
Del and Penny, I stumbled onto your channel less than four years ago. I think you had about 96K subscribers at that time and now you're approaching 200K! Congratulations on your growth, it couldn't happen to a more deserving channel!! 👍😀
Wow, thank you Harold, that is so kind of you to say, we do work hard on the Channel to keep it moving forward and with support, like yours, we've come this far! Have a great weekend there, stay safe and always good to hear from you! D&Px
Love it man can’t wait to see what the end results are gonna be! I’ve learned a few things watching your TH-cam channel anybody can do it if they have the patience
Thanks buddy, i'd say that's a great philosophy !
It is really starting to take shape Del!
Great project.
Oooh, those handlebars are going to look wicked, Del.
Thanks buddy.
Really coming back together now. Looks great 🤘🏻
Thanks buddy, it's great to have a bike back on the lift..!
Looking real good.
Great job on your video!
Thank you!
I can imagine some of the folks at HD are watching this restoration with admiration and satisfaction. Beautiful work mate. Hi to Pen :)
Thanks for such generous comments Byron, there are many beautiful custom Harleys in the world and this will by no means be a show bike, just a fresh looking example with a style change... have a great weekend Sir! D&Px
Looks lean and mean and it’s barely even done! Fabulous job del, I can’t wait to see the suspension
The clip on adapters look fine to me, I would ride it that way.
Is it possible to press the bearings without the tool?
I was wondering what year motor could I fit in a 1986 sportster frame just picked it up it still has the stick motor but the crank case is cracked and I don’t wanna put another carbureted motor in there
Fuel injected engines are all rubber mounted, and yours is rigid mounted, so im not sure what's needed for that conversion.. never looked into it mate !
Nice work Del, I'm impressed with the bearing press too. I will look into getting one and ask a couple of mates if they fancy a shared ownership as it's expensive for something that will have such infrequent use. You are one of the main inspirations for my plans to build a custom bike, thank you 😀👍
It is SUCH a great tool. You will find reasons to go help your friend do it on their bike.
Now do a 2004 and up hardtail sportster
hi Del, just wondering is that front tyre on the right way round ? I always thought looking over the bars the tread pattern arrows face forward and not back!
No mate, that's the rear wheel, on the front, the arrows face rearward ... trust me, the direction arrow is correct on the side wall and as you see when we fit the rear, that is opposed to the front, so those tread grooves, looking down on it, do point to the front.
Those bars look brilliant like that Del! All coming together nicely now. Have a cracking weekend mate
Thanks mate 👍, until I got them thrown on, I really wasn't sure how they'd look, but I agree with you, they totally define the new style and I'm really happy with the riding position, even just sat on the frame!
Is there nothing to stop the fork legs from going higher up in the triple tree my roadking has a step in the forks that stop it
Clearly not on a Sportster!
Looking good, got the makings of a real mean looking bike 👍
Thanks buddy👍
Is this a mid glide front end? What are the wheel and tire measurements?
What's a "Mid Glide" ?
@@Moonfleet41 is the front end like forty eight +2015
@@jonassbeghen874 No, this is 2003 Sportster Hugger with custom wheel rim !
@@Moonfleet41 nice, I'm thinking about putting a 21 inch wheel on my 2012 xl1200c, it currently has the original 16 inch wheel with fat tires. Have you seen any with this change?
Isn't that just like a XL1200V the "Sportster 72" ?
You can already see the shape of the bike taking place Del - this is an exciting project 👍
Thanks Richard, plenty more to come!
essentially a new bike, happy weekend you two !
Excellent Del...well made vid again and inspires others to take on a build project.👍
Thanks mate 👍
Love the your the way you end your videos and I love how you explain everything you doing
Thank you so much for the kind feedback..
what the torque speck on the tree middle bolt?
@@Moonfleet41 Hiya, yes, i forgot about the fat bar / thin bar issue.
Starting to look like something! Great build up to now. I must say, that bearing press is a nice piece of kit! Loving every episode.
Thanks Robin 👍, left a link to it in the description if you fancy one for yourself, they are a far calmer and safer way than hammering bearing cups in.
Excellent.....she's starting to look like something even I can recognize now! 😎 Have a great weekend!
Thanks Allen, yeah, it does feel good to have the beginnings of a motorcycle back on the lift..! Enjoy your weekend too and keep safe.
I'm starting to think the clip ons may work now I see the context.
Even at this stage your vision is becoming clear 👍👍
BTW, great to see you in such good health ... that's what a good woman can do for you 😊
Where can I get one of those "Good Women" my health is shit!!! However, not so bad that I can't go out for a ride. Ciao everyone and ride safe!!!
Thanks so much Shane, glad you're enjoying it, the rear end install will further compliment the look as you'll see in the next video!
finally taking shape, can't wait to see the finished bike :D
Thanks buddy, You and me both!
In this age where everyone seems to be sporting 18" apehangers im glad to see clipons! Cant wait to see the end results.
You really like Wiha tools it seems:p
I've loved every single step of this build, it's been awesome 👌
Thanks buddy, long way to go, and we're really glad you're enjoying it so far!
Thanks buddy 👍, I think you're reading my mind already, once the rear end is in, it will be time to get a little creative with the bodywork!
It's looking great Del. Fantastic to see it coming together.
Thanks buddy👍 Glad you're enjoying it
I’m so thoroughly impressed by how much care you take in putting it all together.
The Fisher Price Evel Kenevel toy bike bars are great! Oh, hang on, that's a bearing race installation tool! my bad.
Peace and love brother ✌ 💚
Wouldn't they be a cheeky set of bars, but the arthritis in the elbows would probably play havoc at our age aye brother?? Chat soon, have a great weekend!
@@Moonfleet41 They'd be great if you accidently put both arms in one sleeve 😆👍
Nice job really enjoying this build
Nice video Del and Penny. Job well done mate, love the look with the clip on. Very sweet steering head bearing install set you have, now you have got me thinking, more money LoL . Penny and you have a great weekend and stay safe. Cheers
Thanks mate👍, it is one of those occasional tools you never really use that much.. but when you need it, it's perfect for making a calm and tidy install of those bearing cups.. for years i worked with some threaded bar and sockets, but in the end, decided to invest.! Have a peaceful weekend too mate, and take care.. D&Pxx
And we wouldnt be here with out you Del and the lovely Penny.
Awesome Del
Best build by far well done 👏
Thank you Tim 👍, we really appreciate your kind support!
Sweet, Del! Your patience and precision are going to make this better than new. Hope you both are doing well and have a great weekend there! 🏍👍🏍

@@andyjrichie6709 Safe ride both, and enjoy!
I'm affraid that this kind of handle bars, is goiinng to touch the fuel tannk, dont't you think?
They shouldn't do mate, the Nightsters run under slung mirrors, which would hang lower than these bars, and they don't touch the tank... Harley tanks are pretty narrow and many custom Sportsters run clip-ons successfully, it's all just a case of setting it all up once the tank's fitted!
Iv got that t.shirt 👍
Nice job realy enjoying this build
Hey Del and Penny, great video! I was wondering how clip-ons would look on this Harley and the answer is - better than I thought they might. It's a real pleasure to see this project coming back together and I look forward to seeing more progress. Take care and be safe, both of you!
Thanks buddy, am glad you approve, they're a unique look and very different from anything Harley have ever made which is all the more reason to do it maybe! We appreciate your kind support.
Can wait you finish project 👍
This was one of your best videos to watch, so satisfying. I'm not sure about the clamp-ons but you have surprised us many times before so I'm just curious of your vision.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice work, those clp=ons look real good, and so nice with every thing in a "like new" condition, enjoyed very much.
Glad you enjoyed mate, thanks for your support!
Great job sir. I would love to see you build a café racer and show it at the bike shed London
Thanks Mark, i don't think it would ever be good enough for that standard, but Maybe one day!

I reckon that's a good plan brother, I just need a mate called Mal to ride with!
& a small white terrier called 'Prestolite' : )
Really liking the silver engine and the res black. Also what's your reasoning behind not fully packing the neck bearings? I'm curious
I did fully pack the neck bearings, perhaps you skipped forward and missed bits, but rest assured, they're correctly and fully grease packed.
🙏 I consider you "a brother from a different mother". 🍻cheers.
That mushy stuff said😆, what are your initial thoughts about the clip-on's, considering no seat or tank yet? 🤔
Have a great weekend folks.
Thank buddy, that's very kind of you. I love the clip-ons already, even sitting just on the frame the stretch is right, and not cramped at all.. time will tell, and obvously ill share the whole journey with you.
