We've spent nearly a month touring around Southern California on the Can-Am Spyder RT Limited. This three-wheeler is tough to define, but it provides a unique and interesting alternative to the rest of the industry's touring motorcycles.

My left leg was amputated above the knee last year in a motorcycle accident. Just bought a Can Am RT, I love it! It's like it was made just for me, an excellent ride to give me back my independence.

After two knee replacements I sold my cruiser and purchased a Can-AM Spyder RT Limited 2012 model Pearl White. Now it's just me and the open road to travel-- one day at a time, in no hurry, after all Rob it's the journey that counts no matter how many wheels your ride has.

I am disabled and know I can't ride a motorcycle anymore, so the Spyder looks like quite attractive to me for several reasons. I'm looking now, whether used or new, I will have one soon!!

ever notice how riding a bike is effortless, it responds so precisely to movements measured in millimeters, throttle on the handle, brake on the fingertips, and steering is just second nature.

i really like the philosophy of this bike
enjoy the ride, take it easy, experience life, absorb the scenery all with minimum input in total comfort, just throttle and a single button.
something a car can never give you, even a convertible. not to mention the annoyances of constantly turning a big clunky round thing and fiddling around with your feet

I got my 2011 rt in December 2018 I had a few rides before I put it away for winter yep I know wrong time of year to buy but I have never been sensible. A bit of a back story I am 57 I started riding bikes when I was about 12 in the woods and field so one I was 16 started road riding. Over the years had many types of bikes and used them for work and pleasure in all weathers so I am reasonably experienced. The only one I was scared to ride was a friend’s goldwing side car outfit I had one go on it and did not get far before trying to turn left and nearly crapped myself not for me. Well in 2008 I had a accident at work and it put paid to my riding days and driving manual cars I didn’t lose my leg but it hurts like hell when it’s moved so my driving habits changed. Fast forward to 2015 my son told me he was going for his bike test so it set me off so I ended up with a goldwing trike with the push button gear change. The tike it self was a old 1200 aspencade base the bike was ok but it was built on a unmodified car axel so was on the large size and hard work to ride and I just didn’t enjoy it and it was down to the construction method and not because it was a trike so I sold it. I had been looking on eBay and I saw several can am spyder rts for sale and most of my bikes have been touring models it what I fancied but the price made me smart a bit. I did the usual thing and watched every video out there and was aware what riding style was needed so I bit the bullet mugged my saving and paid £13000 for a low mileage 2011 rts spyder I had ridden one at a dealer up north so new what to expect and did the first rides on my own to get used to it. Now the bit your interested in I loved the look of the trike the styling the equipment the riding position the gearbox worked a treat being the automatic the reverse gear meant I never worried about parking compared to my wing trike with no revers gear so things was great. Now perhaps thing started to go wrong with the riding first of I felt awkward on it not the size or controls the v twin I loved the sound and it pulled like a train and it did put a smile on my face. But I never felt completely in control someone had fitted a upgraded sway bar on it but it still followed the road imperfections to much and felt twitchy. I thought ok it new to me and I will gel with it soon so a plan was hatched for a tour with my lad to north wales in 2019, tour completed had a great time but still had a few moments when I thought I was along for the ride and I was the passenger 🙁. I rode it a few more times that year with plans for a Scotland in 2020 and we all know what happened then the world pooped it’s self. 2021 was not much better my son bought a house so money and time was diverted. In 2022 I made my mind up to sell the trike I really loved the trike as a whole but over the mileage I never really gelled with the type of riding style needed for it. I have already said I think the trike looks brilliant and always gets the looks I love the equipment it came with the air suspension storage and radio gear but I couldn’t gel with it. Another problem I had was it was stored a few miles away so going out on it was a faff and I own a automatic mx5 nc and it was to easy to get in that and drive. After all my ramblings my conclusions are I am not a trike person but I still love the can am and for some it’s the difference between riding and never riding again. I now am looking at the tilting motor works goldwing conversion but the price of a auto wing and the costs involved bring my finding days to a end. The can am wasn’t for me but the next person it might be a match made in heaven good hunting.

I bought the RT sypder Limited and I love it.... I have alot of biker friends and they all love it. In fact one of them took me out so, I can ride with him. It's a great motorcycle, He is right you have to get use to it if you rode two wheels. I didn't ride two wheels... This was the best motorcycle for me...... Love it!!!!!!!! :) DON'T TRY TO BRING OTHERS DOWN DUDE! I pasted my test at DMV..... GET A LIFE!

@Stivans13 I agree, taking the lean out seems like it would not corner as well as a motorcycle or a car.
Those scooters are pretty neat, and they go up to 500ccs which would make it near par with a T-max or Silverwing in power.

The wife and I took an RT for a ride not too long ago. It won't take a second ride, or visit back to the dealership to realize that we'll be buying one as soon as practicable. The five previously owned Gold Wings were nice rides, but this we feel, offers a more comfortable, smoother two up ride over the long haul.

One reason I'm looking at this is that I'm an older rider and not getting any younger. I dropped my "real" bike, as you call it, 3 times and had to get help to pick it up the last time. I got lucky that last fall, but as I'm nearing retirement age, I don't want to push it. Hip surgery put the kybosh on riding a regular bike. I can still throw a bike around, but picking it up is out of the question. I think a 3-wheeler would be just the thing for me.

At 51 years old, I don't really care what the biker commando's say. I like this Spyder. Can I ride bikes ? Yes, I started at 13 years old on a RM 50,YZ125, RM125, TT500 and moved to street. Started with an RD350, had a POS Harley (AMF) traded for a KZ550, traded for a VMAX. Always wanted a Goldwing, and really fell in love with trikes. And the stability of the Can Am Spyder exceeds any Trike. So call me what you want. I have done iron bottom and probably have more miles than the Harley critics.

Wife and I and 2 other couples planned a 28-day June 11 tour of the western states. Our NEW Spyder RT/S made it all the way to AZ before the electrics and transmission went out. Oh, its not so bad - at 22 mpg with accessory trailer, we'd have never made it across Utah anyway. Local dealer couldnt fix it, and the rest of our group had to leave us there. Vacation over on Day 4. Oh, and CanAm wont reimburse the Uhaul bill or gas to get it home. Good Luck. Total mileage at time of failure 3,400.

I feel for you. one week after I traded my Suzuki Boulevard in on a 2011 Spyder RT the speedometer display went out on it. that was on July 15, 2022.. the part was on back order till October 19th. the it was pushed back to November 16th. then March 15th, 2023. now it has been pushed back once more to May 20th.. so all this time I'm paying for a machine that I can't even ride!!!!

@TheSuperSingh91 I think you forgot about individuals who are old, or handicapped. I know some codgers i hope invest in one of these, my dad after after forty+ years or riding motorcycles is one of them i feel the spyder is safer than his vulcan. The basic one for 17k is viable compared to the 30k harley trike its obvious. Having fully functional legs its nice to know that one day if he unthinkable happens, or i get old, i can still ride and not pay for the overpriced and ancient harley design.

I've seen a few Can Am's on the road over the past few years and every time I see them I am like what the hell is that (at first) lol... Then I realize it's a Can Am. They are so wild and futuristic looking in my opinion. Looks like it would be a lot of fun to ride as well. Definitely safer than a motorcycle as well I'm sure. With all these idiots texting and driving now, I'd feel a lot safer getting hit on a Can Am than a motorcycle. At least with the Can Am you have some extra weight and stability with the two wheels up front. I know it's not as safe as a car obviously, but you know what I mean.

@whatsup1026 The MSRP on the Limited is $28,099.00. A Honda Goldwing Trike will run between $35 to $45K! This is much safer than a typical trike due to all the built in safety features. Is it for everyone, No! Is it a good alternative to two wheels, definitely Yes!

  • @Strat09Retired
    @Strat09Retired 11 ปีที่แล้ว

For individuals who enjoy riding, someone handicapped unable to balance a two wheeled bike after knee surgeries and wants to experience the open road once more. Everyone has an opinion, please respect others choices outside the two wheeled world -- whether its three wheeled or four, just enjoy the ride, after all it's the journey that counts.
