My. No. 23 is Rocks by Aerosmith. One of the most appropriately titled albums ever in terms of its content because that's exactly what the music contained within does. Toys In The Attic, it's predecessor put Aerosmith into the big league (in the US at least) and deservedly so as its a great album too, but I like Rocks even more. Just one of the grooviest sassiest sounding hard rock albums ever made. The combination (pun intended) of Perry and Whitford's guitars with one of the funkiest groove laden rhythm sections in heavy rock and Tyler's rnb tinged vocals is just so compelling. A series of great songs, Back In The Saddle, Rats In The Cellar, Combination, Get The Lead Out, Sick As A Dog and Best of all, Lick and A Promise, make this just one grwat rocknroll joyride from beginning to end.
Other honourable mentions from Aerosmith are the aforementioned Toys In The Attic, Get Your Wings, Draw The Line and Night In The Ruts oh and yes, I do quite like the debut too.

Hey Jerry. With this series, when listening to all these 70's albums, it's been taking me back to those good old days. When this album came out in the spring of 1976, I took one mathematics college class in the summer because I wanted it out of the way before I started my Sophomore year. I commuted 25 miles three days a week for that class. "Rocks" was the album that I just bought and was the listen for that commute almost every time. I can't hear it without thinking about that drive.

My choice for July 9th is Boston's self-titled debut LP. I remember when this album came out in my final high school years, and I flipped- I was a huge fan of prog and hard rock, and this album seemed to cover those bases, but it also had a pop sensibility. By that stage of my teenagedom, I was no longer a huge pop fan, but the combination was very appealing. It was heavy enough to really get into from a teenage rock-head perspective, but it had that commerciality that your kid sister or your parents could enjoy. My two ultimate favorite songs are the two proggy ones: "Smokin'"(I used to play that song in my band and actually was able to do the keyboard solo) and "Foreplay/Long Time," but every other song on this album is phenomenal- there are no bad songs!

#23: Van Halen- Van Halen II. The second studio album by American rock band Van Halen. Trying to live up to a mega classic debut is not an easy task, but Van Halen made another rock classic with their sophomore release. A very solid album front to back. Not a clunker on the entire album. Edward Van Halen really shines on this album. I picked four of my favorite cuts on here, but love them all. Hi my pick for Day 10 Trapeze Medusa Trapeze is a band who's members went on to other great bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest and Whitesnake. However this album was their second and first to have Glen Hughes vocals on, it influenced a number of follow on bands yet gets very little recognition for that fact, one such band was Cirith Ungol who formed in 1971 but did not release any albums till the 80s and they have sighted "Jury" as the inspiration for the Epic Doom sound of their album King of the Dead. Stand out tracks for me are Black Clouds, Jury, and the title track

    23. Rory Gallagher - Photo-Finish (1978)
The title of the album was because they just got the record finished at the deadline. Rory had earlier recorded the album with keyboards…but didn’t like the results…so he scrapped it and went with a power trio…Gerry McAvoy on bass and Ted McKenna (Michael Schenker) on drums.
The album rocked hard like the early days with “Taste” and his solo recordings. This is to me Rory’s best collection of songs. I got to see him live soon after this was released; and I can tell you he was in top form. I was near the stage and got a full handshake from Rory…that was a great moment for me !!!
I rate him with Jeff Beck as the best I ever saw in concert. He had that Strat Smokin’ that night !!! (For context I saw Clapton, Page, Blackmore, West, Stevie Ray, Iommi etc.). Not to put any guitar player down, but Rory was incredible THAT night !!!
“Shin Kicker” & “Cruise on Out” are wide open fast blazing rockers. Start your day with these and get your adrenaline rush !!
“Overnight Bag” and “Shadow Play” are the two best songs. The former I put on mix CD’s all the time…and the latter has Gallagher’s best ever solo !!
“Mississippi Sheiks” is a fine tune about some old blues men. Rory , from Ireland, really identified with the classic American blues players. He was also a terrific acoustic blues guitar master !!
“The Last of the Independents” came from a movie named “Charley Varrick” . It was a film noir about a bank robber and that was the subtitle of the movie. Rory was at the end of the seventies sort of a last of the independents musically with a power trio in the era of Disco and Punk Rock.
“Fuel to the Fire.” Is a superb closer with some great power riffs at high volume. A fine bluesy end to a great record !!
Two bonus tracks now added are “Early Warning” and “Juke Box Annie”.
They are very good additions to this album.
This album stands as one of Rory Gallagher’s best !! He wrote all the songs and his guitar playing is stellar. Looking back I believe that his live album “Irish Tour ‘74” would have been better without a keyboard player. Rory was at home in a trio. His voice and guitar made it clear…that he meant business when he showed his talents to the people !!!
    Rest in Peace…Rory !!🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

Day 9: Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
There are some bands whose transitional albums that don't really work. Then there are other bands whose transitional albums are better than other bands best albums, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is one of them. Sabbath still brings the heavy with the title track and Killing Yourself To Live, while also dabbling in things like acoustic rock (Spiral Architect), funk (Looking For Today) and Elton John (Sabbra Caddabra). Another knockout, albeit with a little fluff.

Aussie Proto-Metal masters Buffalo really hit one out of the park with their 1973 masterpiece Volcanic Rock. The album truly lives up to its title, it's fiery, explosive and will obliterate anything in its way as it moves from bluesy Psych to full-on thunderous Rock, easily on par with the best Heavy Rock bands of the era.
With the powerful vocals of David Tice, the heavy duty rhythm section of Jimmy Economou on drums and Pete Wells (later slide guitarist and co-founder of Rose Tattoo) on bass, and enhanced by the crunchy, screaming guitar sound of the great John Baxter, Volcanic Rock is one of the all-time great Heavy Rock albums. These guys were truly great musicians.
"Sunrise (Come My Way)" gets the record off to a raucous start. It's easily one of the best Psych songs of the era, with fantastic guitar lines shooting over a Blues Rock riff that totally cooks. "Shylock" is another great out-and-out rocker with an even heavier riff. Other standouts on the album are the two slow, bluesy tracks with big solos, "Freedom" and "The Prophet". Even though they take up a considerable chunk of the record by themselves (over 16 minutes), the two tracks never outstay their welcome and should convince even the biggest skeptic that these guys were the Real Deal. "'Til My Death" is another good rocker (there's really not a weak track on this album). "Intro:Pound Of Flesh" is the introduction to "Shylock", but could easily be considered a separate track, and on which the band indulges in a little more lengthy soloing.
Buffalo is an extremely underrated band that should've been much more popular. Volcanic Rock is Proto-Metal and Stoner Rock at its best. If you love Sabbath's first four LPs or early Budgie you'll totally dig this album.

Today’s pick: SMOKIN’ by HUMBLE PIE. (1972) While there are no shredding guitar solo’s on this album, the songs themselves along with Steve Marriott’s wild, raspy vocal quality places this album high on my list of hard, bluesy, balls to the wall, rock albums of the 70’s decade. With a single album sporting songs like “Hot N’ Nasty”, “The Fixer”, “C’mon Everybody”, “30 Days In The Hole” and especially one of the all-time great album closer’s “Sweet Peace and Time” with its great riffs playing all over the place, this album just couldn’t miss my list . 23. Van Halen- S/T (1978).
This debut was one of the great advancements in hard rock history. Not only was Eddie's playing technically innovative, but the record's sound is years ahead of its time. It ushered a new period in amplification, pickup configurations and production values that shaped the super-strat fever and high gain environment of the 80's. A lot of people say that EVH came closest to having an impact similar to that of Hendrix, and I tend to agree.
The great thing is that regardless of what you make of all this, the band had a general commitment in just writing great songs. People who are only familiar with a certain two minute solo on this record might be surprised to find that a lot of the tracks are down to earth and lack the pompous nature that some associate with Van Halen.
Running with the Devil is a childhood favorite and a good example of what I just described. It's a memorable song- but quite simple and laid back with its recognizable bass intro, verse riffs and chorus.
Eddie's typical bar chords become a huge part of the 80's sound. People often take shots at David Lee Roth, but his vocal performance is immediately impressive. Those screams in the chorus are pure gold.
Next we have the infamous Eruptions. It was tremendous novelty for the time. Granted, I wish Eddie's know-how wasn't stereotyped by these couple of minutes of out of context shred. He's got tons of better solos. Still, it is iconic and serves as a great intro.
I also can't get enough of the two-handed tapping, which isn't as present on this record as you'd imagine. Most of Eddie's solos from here on are specifically tailored for each song.
You Really Got Me is a festive, beautifully ornamented version of an already iconic song by The Kinks (It's speculated that The Kinks were the first to play power chords as we know them). It's a tasty, luscious arrangement and the solo here is even better- what with its topsy-turvy nature and the chromatic tapping segment.
Ain't Talking About Love is so strong that it could actually unite all religions and bring about world peace (people who don't get this reference are in for a real treat).
This is how you use a flange pedal properly. It elevates the intro's ladder sounding arpeggiation even further, and the chorus riff in triplets is also abrasive.
From here on, there's just a mild sequence of good rockers. I'm the One is famous for its tricky rhythm. Jamie's Crying is a simple jam with a cool cat vibe and Feel Your Love Tonight is a standard nighttime rocker.
Sandwiched in between those is Atomic Punk, which is the best song within that middle section. The shuffles and rhythmic nuances are its green, plutonium highlights. It's also one of the meaner songs, with a little bit of a metal edge.
The third portion of the album actually has some of my favorite material on this album. Little Dreamer is a calming ballad not deprived of some groove and makes you feel the same wishful vibe that it talks of. It's a song to hear while looking at the stars in the night sky.
David Lee Roth's vocals are amazing on this. He might actually be one of the best guys for this kind of moonlight & martini, R&B on the balcony vibe. Eddie's solo here is my favorite on the album. It's the melodic antithesis to Eruptions. The brief moments in which it dips its toes into Phrygian waters makes for a dramatic nudge that moves you a little on whatever armchair you're seated on.
Ice Cream Man is maybe the coolest song (heh). I find it vastly entertaining, and all would do well not to underestimate it. I hate to spoil the utter shock for anyone who hasn't heard it- but you won't believe the impossible, unprecedented guitar parts that got thrown into this song for some laughs. Early Van Halen had no throwaways even if you're rooting for it.
The album closes with its fastest track. On Fire has the most urgent riffing on it, definitely borderline metal. The vocals are phenomenal again; the chorus screams are pure gold. I also like the chord choices on this chorus quite a bit. Again, it's not far from what you'd hear in 80's hard rock and metal.
The breakdown is the heaviest thing on the record. Eddie's solo has a spiraling, unwinding quality to it that is very technical and slightly disorienting. This could be one of the best short rockers of the 70's.
Van Halen's debut record continues to stand as a historical document, or a kind of museum artifact. Like a really kick-ass vase. When we think of pioneering records, they're usually made up of details that the casual listener doesn't care about. There maybe isn't a better stepping stone record- that can also be as good of a gateway album as this one, for new listeners who perceive rock as something that must live up to its reputation of exciting music.

Today's pick is Rush-Rush. As you look back over the storied career of this iconic Canadian power trio, you will find that their debut is absolutely great even though it was maligned because many people could not adapt to Geddy Lee's voice. Imagine that, one of the most talented musicians in Rock history had to fend off this widespread criticism. Insane. Sure, Rush-Rush is pre-Neil Peart, but John Rutsey was fine. Not nearly as good as one of the best drummers and lyricists of all-time, but fine. Look at the songs, "Finding My Way", "Need Some Love", "What You're Doing", "In The Mood" and "Working Man". A classic through and through. Irritates me when Rush is so dissed...still even to this day by many. It is absolutely mind boggling. In at #23-Rush-Rush.

My choice today is *Master of Reality* by Black Sabbath. I have a theory that many a band’s music suffers once critics and fans start categorising it and placing it in ever narrower genres. Back at the start of the 1970s, it wasn’t like that. You had umbrella terms like ‘progressive’ - encompassing a wide range of acts from Jethro Tull to Cream to Black Sabbath - which basically meant anyone that wasn’t just playing three minute pop singles. Heavy metal as an idea didn’t yet exist, although by 1973-1974 writers like Lester Bangs were using it on occasion to describe a certain kind of decibel onslaught if not yet a style.
Black Sabbath in 1971 was playing heavy music, but not only that. Anyone giving more than a cursory listen to ‘Master of Reality’ will be impressed by the variations musically within the songs. Take ‘Children of the Grave’, a bona fide Sabbaf classic if ever there was one. The short intro instrumental ‘Embryo’ is rudimentary to say the least, but it really works in this context to set up the incoming heaviosity of what follows. Bill Ward seems to be playing a kettle drum before a heavily treated, clattering drum part really makes the song’s rhythm come alive. This isn’t just some crash wallop merchant, this is a drummer with class and swing. Guitarist Tony Iommi was unearthing a particularly ponderous form of blues from some dark, underground place. The riffs he played on his Gibson SG led the stoners in the crowd down labyrinthine tunnels in which the only path back up to the light was to follow the singer’s anguished voice which seemed to convey genuine unease. He may not have written the lyrics, but Ozzy Osbourne made them real and believable. As an interpreter, he was brilliant back then. As for the man that did write the words, he is the unsung hero of the group for me. Geezer Butler took the concerns of an intelligent young working class guy back then - threat of nuclear annihilation, misgivings about societal collapse and the loss of religion, feelings of depression and alienation and fears of madness - and created a new and distinctive kind of subject matter for rock songs that to my mind stands up way better than the hammy and laboured words sung by the likes of Ian Gillan and Robert Plant.
‘Sweat Leaf’, ‘Lord of This World’, ‘Into the Void’, the gorgeous ‘Solitude’… this is all great stuff. But heavy metal? Not to my ears it isn’t. It’s music, played by musicians who were too busy to analyse what they were coming up with and playing to crowds too under the influence of red Leb and Watneys Party Seven to bother deciding what musical genre they were listening to. Fook that, mate, let’s boogie!
By the early ‘80s, Black Sabbath had been placed firmly in the metal camp and they started playing and dressing to the stereotype. Any colour of dress would do, so long as it was black. The hair got more styled and more MTV rawk. The music lost its subtlety and was heavy because the fans would no longer accept anything else. They had decided what Black Sabbath was, and woe betide the group if it tried to do anything that didn’t fit the mould. But back in 1971 there was no mould, just four inventive musicians inadvertently making a new kind of music that would change the world.

Awesome write-up Patrick! One of the best I've ever seen on SoT. The first time I can ever remember hearing the term "heavy metal" was in Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" from 1968. So far as I know that's where the term originated, but I could be wrong. I agree with you about labels. Black Sabbath was totally unique and influential in their time largely because they didn't fit neatly into any category.

    Samson..... Survivors
    Released June 1979.
Bruce Dickinson's first recordings are found here as bonus tracks. He became Samson's singer after the album was done as guitarist Paul Samson ably sings on the album, then Dickinson was later recorded replacing Samson's vocals.
More importantly for fans of the band Gillan, it's bassist John McCoy co-wrote and produced this album, making this a must have for us Gillan fans. It is often overlooked that McCoy and keyboardist Colin Towns wrote most of the music on their beloved Gillan albums, not the more famous guitar players they had Bernie Torme and Janick Gers. (Towns also lends some keyboards for this Samson record.)
Paul Samson would return the favor to McCoy in five years by playing guitar on the great McCoy solo album Think Hard.
There is no ballads or commercial crap on this album. As its declares on the back cover, "FOR BEST RESULTS PLAY LOUD WHEN WRECKED."
This was the early days of heavy metal when there were few albums of exclusively hard rock on a record. Major labels always wanted a ballad for a single and not turn off the girlfriends of the album owner.
Back in the day a local college heavy metal DJ would tell the listener how many hard rock tracks was on a seventies era album. That was essential information for a hard rock fan before the internet and Kerrang! Magazine. There also were few independent record stores owned and run by hard rock fans yet to help guide us.
Samson is/was strictly imports to America for us hardcore metal fans. There are reissues that came later that basically renamed the albums as if they were Bruce Dickinson solo records.
Regardless of all that background, this is a cool album. Just disregard the "WHEN WRECKED" advisory if you are in AA or NA.
Thank you to fellow commentator Kevin Brown for picking this first, reminding me that this is a seventies record.

Good pick with Hotter Than Hell from Kiss, Pete. I'll be going over the Kiss seventies output later this month to pick my favorite. I'm personally picking my favorite album from my favorite 31 seventies hard rock acts.

Today I'm going with Rainbow Down to Earth..
This was one of the albums that really turned me on to hard Rock..
Very commercial, and full of hits, but undeniably rockin...
Graham, what a vocalist and front man..
