Bob is my hero! Thank you, Bob, for showing me what's possible. I now no I have more year left to ride than I thought! Keep rockin and leading the way! ❤️💪🏿
It would be cool to,interview Bob and ask home what he’s gained by getting back in the saddle over the last couple of years. Also the hardships with a broken hand etc. I think more older people need to hear that story. Hopefully we all are riding at 79.
Great race Macky! I have to admit that I love seeing your dad race, he certainly is an inspiration! Syd: great decision to ride with Bob and not race; it's always smart to listen to our inner self. Thanks as always for sharing!
Good Race Macky and Bob...I'm 73 so I know of what he speaks...though he is a few years ahead of me....I really admire Bob's enthusiasm and his willingness to train ever harder next year! He sure appreciated Syd's pacing him....I lot of fun to watch!!....Macky....you would have been closer to the front had that other racer not fallen in front of you! Thanks for another great episode!
I'm 7 minutes into the video and I've laughed almost constantly at Sid's commentary. Which tells me how much less stressed she is taking this one off. I remember my mom was 35 for a few years, so you're not the only bad maths woman out there lol
Those Aspen ST's are reminiscent of the old Ritchey Speedmax tires I used to race with back in the early 2000's. Surprising amount of grip in loose over hard terrain and incredibly fast rolling.
Bob is my new hero. I'm 72 and aiming at being as active as Bob is through into my 80s. Congratulations Bob. Glad to see the tyre choice worked out OK Macky.
Syd, kudos for deciding not to race this one but to ride along with Bob instead. My competitive side tugs at this, but I bet it meant the world to him, and a greater lifelong memory for you.
Kudos on you and your awesome dad Bob (and Syd as well obviously 🙂) Bob is an inspiration! I'm 59 now and due to not sporting too much after my 30th until 5 years ago, I'm actually in the best shape I've been in in 30+ years. It feels good and it even feels better to see Bob doing this riding at age 79! It make me feel I'd have some 20 years of nice biking ahead of me, which feels good
bob's got a decade on me and I admire his enthusiasm and vitality ;) I know that racing mountain bikes is Nota thing I'm going to ever try, but I do need to ride mine more ;)
I agree on the tires Macky, but most of us amateurs are likely better served by running the lightest wheels we can get away with & still fast rolling tread but a little more robust tire casing.
I love that kind of riding. Also love the NM bottle cap stem cover thing. I grew up riding in New Mexico and have always considered New Mexico home. Even though I have lived in California since 1975. I keep going back several times a year to visit and ride. I have not ridden in Farmington yet. Looks like my next road trip. There's a really nice golf coarse there I love to play. The golf clubs will have to come also.
Another brilliant video. Bob is the man 💪. Technical question for you both if you don't mind. Do you switch between suspension setting much in a race? Rear shock and front or do you leave them fully open once you get going? I'm new to full suspension cross country bikes. Currently have a Cervelo ZFS with 120mm front and 100mm rear.
Chip time is based on when each person crossed the timing mat at the start. Clock time (aka gun time) is based on the race start time. The results online that are sorted by chip time are incorrect. They used clock time which is the standard for most races and makes sense when the race might come down to a sprint. Chip time is generally used for individual start events (like DH or Enduro).
@@sydandmacky Hey Syd, thanks heaps for getting back to me, I really appreciated that. I ended up buying the Goodr Wrap G, I gather they are similar, just a bit straighter. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@sydandmacky Warp probably has more to do with the speed you two ride at, or I have just bought the wrong thing?? Thanks heaps for your chat, it means a lot. 😀😀
I really like the bike stand you use in your latest video. I was wondering what brand brand of bike stand. Are you using? Red colored stand. Huge fan !!! 👍👍👍
I wasn’t paying close attention, but I know in past videos they are using a Feedback Sports Pro Mechanic HD Bike Repair Stand, which is on my wishlist. Looks like a great stand.
That's my kind of race, rolling. Tomorrow is my annual 35 mile race with lots of long gradual climbs and equally long decents. I signed up in open male. This is the fastest class there is. Being a 56 year old beginner status rider racing against experts ranging from ages of 18-40 my chances are slim to none to pull off a podium. My goals are to finish and improve my PR from last year. Besides, at least I can say I raced against the best the race had to offer no matter how bad of a butt whooping it is. 😂 👊👍💪
Update: Race went good. Achieved all my goals. Finished, set a new PR, beat someone that I had never beat and didn't let my buddy who overalled the event beat me by two hours. He only beat me by an hour and a half. 😂 👊👍💪
Interesting. I think I'd be against it as I like that it's part of the decision and somewhere that you sometimes have to make tough decisions. Instead I'd like more races where you just wouldn't want to run light tires because the trails were too difficult!
@@sydandmacky Hah, I agree, I think since most flats are not random it becomes a skill trade off. Maybe on those tough races you just mentioned it would be a better idea to have the rule in order to stop some random guy winning because he ran UL tires and got lucky.

Bob. Will be 77 next week; but, I still do clipless and don't have a mirror. Maybe we should race. Wait, will be having gallbladder removed next month and second knee replacement after that. So, maybe later next year...LOL. Besides, I want to finally meet Syd and Macky...and you.

Thanks for answering our tire question Macky.. I honestly was confused why an athlete with your experience ran light casings.
To be fair, I’m pretty sure they run liners inside tho.
I am confused why u r confused. The more experience and proficiency, the lighter tires they run. Have you watched UCI?
@GHinWI we do often run liners, but for this race I chose not to.

I’m 50 and are regularly racing, and I hope when I’m Bob’s age I’ll still be racing.
Great race Macky. I wonder if your dad likes magnetic pedals. There are a few on the market that i heard are very good.
That’s the thing with flat/rolling courses. People think they’re easier because there’s no big climbs, but the opposite is true!
I am guessing your tires held up pretty well. 👍
I'd prefer Syd's choice of ride for the day.
That's crazy. I'm from the UK and I got back from Madeira 4 weeks ago, where I also broke a rib whilst out riding with Freeride Madeira 😮
Sorry to hear. Hope you heal up fast. Note from personal experience, if you find a movement that makes your rib click, DON'T DO THAT MOVEMENT 😜
Are you guys going to do a review on the camper you borrowed?
I wanna be like Bob in 40 years

On the tire decision - If you need the light fast tires to have a shot at the podium and the goal is podium, not just finish, the choice is obvious.

Rear shock and front or do you leave them fully open once you get going? I'm new to full suspension cross country bikes. Currently have a Cervelo ZFS with 120mm front and 100mm rear.
We use the rear lockout quite a bit (we have a handlebar remote for it) but leave the front open.
Macky..i think you showed the clock time not the winning chip time ? or can someone explain the difference?
Chip time is based on when each person crossed the timing mat at the start. Clock time (aka gun time) is based on the race start time. The results online that are sorted by chip time are incorrect. They used clock time which is the standard for most races and makes sense when the race might come down to a sprint. Chip time is generally used for individual start events (like DH or Enduro).

Great videos ! question on Victoria liners can you use any valve stems ? or do you have to get a special one? Thanks
They come with special valve stems
@ mine didn’t have the valve stem in them. Can you use regular valve stems or not? Thanks
@pioapostoli3923 if you use normal valve stems you'll be able add air but probably won't be able to remove it or see what pressure is in the tire.
