Dairy cows are bred for their milk, not for meat; when the babies are removed they're still given colostrum. Allowing calves to suckle increases chances of transferred infection from mother to calf, and increases the chance of survival for first calves. Not to mention that as herd animals when you keep the baby with a group of adults the baby could get injured. Most dairy farmers care a lot for their cows and I say this as a proud product of a dairy farming family! (:

@osmmanipadmehum Ive even seen a "Crutch" put on a calfs leg when he had a fractured fetlock and a massive hole in the joint- leg was bandaged, this crutch out on and we taught him to walk with it, was amazing and he was fine, happy out with the cow,
no not at all. But I am in Ireland where all cattle spend half the year out on grass, we are lucky here and our its the reason why our milk is of a very high standard. Plus I work in veterinary and have seen many farms while out with cattle vets and most farmers take incredible care with their stock- everything here is traceable, if a farmer beats his cattle, the bruising will show up on the meat and the farmer is heavily fined. Now I do know in Europe and US cattle are intensively reared but-
@osmmanipadmehum there are high standards that must be adhered to as regards milking parlours, sheds, TB Testing etc, and "the 5 Freedoms". Ya im aware their are farmers who are cruel and animals are neglected but if they are making any kind of good money from farming it is just not in their interest to be mistreating their stock. Ive seen alot of farmers at work and they are soo diligent and careful to their cattle- feeding, worming, de-lousing,up all night calving, nursing sick calves-RESPECT!
