      Couple decades back I moved in NYC and have been impressed by city parks. It is just incredible how islands of Nature thrive despite all the concrete, glass, pollution (NYC has the fieltiest streets and subway among I've ever seen!) and human negligence. Nature is wonder! I have some more videos coming soon to show the power of Nature in this regards and what we can learn from it to use in our aquariums and ponds ;)
      All the best on your adventures!

    I have had land moss in one of my tanks now for around 4 months. It looks great, and the white cloud minnows and neocaradina shrimp seem to love it. Still experimenting with other types of moss, they all seem to pearl up really well and I would agree that adding minnows or shrimp has a very beneficial effect.

      adding fish to a planted tank is very benificial to both the fish and plant. the fishes get hiding places and can Munch a bit and their waste fertilizes the plant.

    I did the same thing only I went to the forest close to my friends house. Caught some shrimps and collected java moss. I only recognize them as java moss because i purchased them before. But what you got there looks extremely beautiful.

      Chitownst1 Gaming wish I could but caring for wild shrimp had proved to be quite the challenge, only very few manage to adapt to a totally different water chemistry. And I can't pretty much hold a camera in the "rainforest" not only that its actually a mountain with no specific walk way, I slip lots of times due to mud and its how steep it was.
      But it was rewarding to see a waterfall and at the top, was like a small little pond, full of shrimps! That's where I capture them. But when I put them in an aquarium, they won't eat anything you give them and depending on the moss for microbes as a source of food isn't enough. So I may need time to learn how care for them.

      Not all mosses grow underwater in my settings - you may get different results. Some grow fast, some grow slow, and some did not show signs of growing at all but stays alive. I am working on a couple videos about previously mentioned and new mosses as well. I am having hard time identifying them - may publish videos without names.Well, will see how it goes...I try to get close up view on them with names or without them. So you would be able to identify them visually when you see them ;)

      I am crossing my fingers hopping this particular moss gets green through winter. It grows slower (and I like it even better for it takes less maintenance ;) than the first type of moss that I checked. And its bushy crowns make it look like a tree - could make any aquarium (specially my small size) look better.

      This vase holds about 1 liter water. Here is a video about this setup: th-cam.com/video/Orv2Eb8laqU/w-d-xo.html Originally, it was for guppy fry and it could hold a couple of my adult dwarf guppies. Generally, the narrowest side of an aquarium should be 3 or times the length of the fish. Here is a video about the minimum aquarium size for fish: th-cam.com/video/ofPxX3qz1OI/w-d-xo.html
      You can put snails (ramshorn or bladder snails would do fine), scuds or any other critters - I have many similar size sustainable aquarium gardens with snails and such for years.

    I found some nice Hynum Moss attached to pieces of bark on a fallen tree. I plan to create a water feature in an aquarium, but will not put any lifeforms in it. Do you think it can survive on the bark? I like the look, and it seemed to be doing well in the woods. I'll be making sure the water flows to the moss, but am concerned about the lifecycle of moss on bark.

    • @4me
      @4me  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Moss should be fine. Give it time and the bark will release tannin causing brownish discoloration of the water. Tannin is harmless for sure. Though, not everyone likes brownish water - consider that. Bark usually is soft to use for driftwood...but one never knows for sure until tries it.
      Also, many critters hide in the bark - that is something you have no control over, but should be aware of.
      There is a way to cure the bark and prepare the moss by submerging it underwater for number of months. You will have to change the water. In the process, all the terrestrial critters would be drown. Only their eggs may survive in this way. Well, that is the way I would attempt. Here is a playlist of my videos about driftwood: th-cam.com/video/lo3uVXTVzFI/w-d-xo.html

    Schön gemacht,aber sind die Behälter nicht etwas zu klein für Fische ?

    • @4me
      @4me  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the question!
      Fish is optional for this experiment - plants can grow without fish. Instead of fish you can use smaller aquatic critters such as shrimps and snails and etc.
      I calculate size of my aquariums based on the size of fish using this equation: th-cam.com/video/Ea5J9-n91v4/w-d-xo.html It seems to work well.The size of fish shown in my videos is less than 3 cm. I am trying to breed strain of guppy with size under 2 cm. You can check this

    Thanks for yr video again i want to ask last question before i am trying to grow moss. is there bacteric in moss? do u mixed any chemical in water when u grow moss or u just use plain water? when i grow moss i have to add snails, seed shrimps etc or i can grow only moss?

    • @4me
      @4me  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your questions!
      You can grow only moss without snails, seed shrimps or any other critters. I don't mixed any chemical in water. I use dechlorinated New York city tap water. Yes, there are bacteria in moss, water and...everywhere. The real question would be if there are dangerous or harmful bacteria ;) Living in a city I have more concerns of getting moss with pesticides than finding dangerous bacteria. Though, New York local regulations require landlords to post warning signs about poison. And pesticides are used only during certain season. Pick up moss a day after rain and wash it. Set it up in a separate nursery to check before trying it in your main aquarium - it is a good rule to follow with any and every new thing you bring from pet store or from wild.
      Best regards!

      I cannot tell you about medicine or salt for aquariums - I've never tried any of those. If you used it with good results before than sure! I love these videos so much experimentation and creativity but when i tried this my moss had some sort of white mold looking thing on it any ideas why?

    • @4me
      @4me  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the question!!
      I've never got white mold on my moss...though, my moss develops very long hair thin rhizoids (root like for attachment and water absorption). Those rhizoids stretch in all directions making fine mesh. I may show it in one of my future videos - it looks nice, but it also may serve as a base for accumulating and growing other things. The white mold looking thing could be remains of fish food fallen from top or if you steer water in aquarium than it could be any thing from the bottom. I would let this moss stay to see what happen next. Mean time set up a new nursery for different sample of the same type of moss taken from different location - it could be that something was on the moss before you collect it.

    • @saytan4798
      @saytan4798 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @4me
      @4me  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is smart. I would still keep some snails or seed shrimps with that moss. If they get sick and die then you know it is poison.

  • @IleanaAdalin
    @IleanaAdalin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You said place moss in dechloronated water, why? Can i use regular tap water instead?

    • @denicever9307
      @denicever9307 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ileana Adalin i readed somewere that it had something to do with chloride, shrimps and fishes would die of the chloride in tap water if i am right. I watched some videos of an ecosphere with fairy shrimps and they mentioned something like this

    • @4me
      @4me  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the question!!
      Chlorine added in water for purpose of killing most bacteria and whatever else could be there alive. So, using chlorinated water may hurt and possibly kill moss, plants, bacteria, critters, fish and etc. Good news is that it takes about 24 hours for chlorine to evaporate from water - and then it's save dechlorinated water ;) Therefore, you may put fresh sample of land moss initially in chlorinated tap water (I use NYC tap water) to get rid of any harmful bacteria. However, it would be better to add dechlorinated water later to refill the tank as water evaporates.
      The bad news is that some cities use chloramine instead of chlorine. Chloramine does not evaporate!! Be mindful about using this type of water!!
      All the best!

    is that normal?

    • @4me
      @4me  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have mosses in different settings - some gets brownish, some gets dark green, and some light green. It has to do with amount of sunlight and water chemistry. Moss kept on windowsill is light green. With less sunlight to it gets dark green. I think most plants have similar tendency.

      I leave it for seed shrimps and snails to take care of ;)
      Seed shrimps do wonderful work consuming algae and remains of organic.

    • @4me

      Guppy adult and fry eat algae among other things. As for pants - guppy will try to eat everything that fit in they mouth. Adult guppy bite soft leaves and soft secondary roots of every plant growing in my aquariums.

      Adult guppy nibble on land moss growing underwater. Also, some of my TH-cam friends mentioned that other types of larger fish (golden and etc) love land moss.

      Yes. I have land moss growing underwater in an aquarium located in the darkest corner of my room even without fish tank light. Though, it grows much slower ;)

  • @simorize
    @simorize 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How much light do you provide it ?

    • @4me
      @4me  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the question!
      I provide as much indirect sunlight as I can to aquariums with fish. Aquariums without fish get all direct sunlight on windowsill (plants and algae like light and seed shrimps like warm water too ;)

    • @simorize
      @simorize 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Michael Langerman I kept it in a plastic cup and in direct sunlight soon it was covered fully by algae, so I kept a snail in it now it's covered with snail poop.
      The Moss is still green but haven't seen any growth.
      Any suggestions ?

    • @4me
      @4me  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose you don't have seed shrimps to tackle the algae...
      Interesting, that I have dozen cups with different types of land moss growing underwater. All of them standing on windowsill. Some gets spoiled, some gets algae growing in, but some stays clear of algae for months without snails or seed shrimps ;) So, I would try to add more moss in the same cup. More moss would leave less nutrition for algae to grow.
      All the best!

    • @4me
      @4me  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the question!
      I feed my guppies in usual manner with fish food flakes, home made fish food flakes, little aquatic critters and they eat whatever plants grow in my aquariums - drop enough food for fish to eat in about 2 minutes (1-2 times a day).

      Michael Langerman hi, thank for all your great video ! Another question: how do you clean this ?

    • @4me
      @4me  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the question!
      I trim moss and other plants using scissors. I rarely clean my nurseries letting the tiny water critters do it (seed shrimps eat most of it). Occasionally I remove algae build up on walls using toothbrush (algae stays in water for fish and critters to eat) or sponge (to remove algae from water). I have some videos explaining much more in details my old and present aquarium fish care in this playlist: th-cam.com/video/5v6OelF1oeU/w-d-xo.html
      PS: I don't change water in my aquariums starting from beginning of 2017 ;)

      It spreads on the ground when it growth on land. This type of land moss growing underwater seems to grow toward surface. There are some other types of land mosses that grow underwater in different pattern - they branching.

    • @4me
      @4me  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jordanponton255 this moss tends to grow in long strings. The other types of moss grow branches from the strings - similar to tree branches. That is what I refer as to branching. The branching mosses seems to grow slower and yet produce very interesting looking results ;)
