Hi, I have bought the M12 Planer and here's my observations, an excerpt from my letter to the Milwaukee rep: The M12 planer is poorly designed. For the money this should be a precision 100% accurate tool. But is far from it.
Since we spoke I have done some further measuring and testing. Please see below. All measuring done with vernier callipers and feeler gauges.
The people designing these tools have absolutely no idea, they should be sacked.
    • With the depth set to zero and a straight edge on the front toe a .4mm feeler gauge easily slips in between the straight edge and the rear shoe. At zero these should be in the same plane with the blade just able to touch the straight edge.
    • On my M12 planer the rear shoe and front toe surfaces line up at .5mm depth setting. This is really where zero should be, however the blade then protrudes by approx. .7mm. Using the planer removes .7mm of material.
    • When testing the snipe I found it to measure up to .9mm, it should be zero, in a perfect world, .1mm would be acceptable to me. .9mm snipe, that’s crazy!
    • With the straight edge laid across the rear shoe over the front toe with the depth set to 2mm I can only fit 1.6mm feeler gauge between the straight edge and the front toe. This should measure 2mm.
    • In testing max depth of cut it is taking off 2mm, which is a combination of 1.6mm at the front toe and the balance in snipe. Should be 2mm at front toe with no snipe.
    • Another thing I noticed with the straight edge on the rear shoe is it is not perfectly flat front to rear. It kicks a little behind the kick stand port.
Having thoroughly inspected the exploded view in the service parts list, (attached), I see no available adjustment to deal with the snipe. So unfortunately the issues with the depth of cut cannot be fixed. It is not a matter of simply recalibrating the front toe depth. Both must be done to fix it. I may try to find something to glue on to the rear shoe to raise it’s height like another user has done with the M18 to fix the same problem, he glued a piece of laminate to the shoe which worked for him. Then I would recalibrate the front toe, or send it back to Milwaukee to do under warranty. So until then I will continue to use it as is. It’s such a pity, this M12 planer could have been a real winner☹.
Thought Milwaukee would have listened to the multitude of complaints about the M18 Planer and made sure they wouldn’t be repeated. But no they didn’t. Why????

    * I have also since checked out the Bosch 12v planer and found it appears to be accurate by measurement, as I have not used it. But at zero depth the front toe is in the same plane exactly as the rear shoe and the tip of the blade just comes up into the same line as it should. This was checked laying a straight edge across the bottom of the plane. The depth measurements looked to be right although I didn't have feeler gauges with me in the store to measure, only a straight edge.

Appreciate you taking the time to share.
I haven’t noticed any of your issues, but with how I use the smaller planer I may never would have. I typically use mine for rough things… taking out crown in studs, humps in floors, etc. the most precision I use it for would be fixing doors.
Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. Allows people to have more info to make a decision 👍

Son I finally got my hands on one. My only complain is that is slightly bigger than the Bosch, but has a roomier space for your fingers. I am not a fan of the safety switch as they pinch my fingers sometimes. Performance is very good, so I got rid of my Bosch.

    • @MORGANSMaintenance

After seeing a article on the Milwaukee planer , A older coworker joined the site I'm on & he has the Bosch its good but the I don't like the trigger & the depth adjuster but just bought the Milwaukee to get shipped to home Depot for $200 & a xc 5.0 off Amazon for 69$ vs $344 after taxes in store. I have the brushless Makita 3" planer but I think this will be better in do time especially the vacuum attachment. What sold me is the direction you can shoot debris , the depth adjuster, & trigger for sure

This actually pisses me off a little bit because I didn’t want to get the M 18 Planer because I thought it was over priced for its performance compared to other 18 V players on the market. If you are in Milwaukee or have neither Bosch tools or Milwaukee… yes. I think it’s the extra blade that helps
The Bosch bogs down on the higher settings, it’s just hard to take off that much at a time. You go thinner and it works well.
If you already have the Bosch and it’s working for you… it would be an upgrade, but the Bosch is still good enough to stay with what you got.

I’m a huge Milwaukee fan, and even though this was just the 1st video of yours I’ve ever seen, clearly you are too!!!
In this Milwaukee vs Bosch 12v planer comparison, it was laughably obvious watching you portrayed Milwaukee to be so vastly superior.
Look at the way you ran the boss using such short and choppy passes….and on top of that, you planed over the exact same spot on that beam that you ran the Milwaukee over!!! So course it’s gonna look like the Milwaukee is hoggin out tons of material while the Bosch is barely makin chips.
Perhaps try being a little less biased on your next tool comparison, we were all laughing over your obvious agenda to promote one tool.
    ✌🏼

    • @MORGANSMaintenance
      @MORGANSMaintenance  ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry if it appeared biased.. if it was I wasn’t attempting for it to be. As I mentioned, both tools are good tools. To be honest the Milwaukee is superior, but If I was already in Bosch and not Milwaukee, I wouldn’t change platforms for it.
This was intended as more of a feature comparison since I own both, but I decided to show them both in action for people to see. I don’t do many performance comparison videos because there will never be a “completely equal” test. The Bosch got into more of a knot than the Milwaukee did, but if you change boards or spots someone else will say it must have been a harder board, etc.
As far as cutting…When you plane wood it doesn’t matter if you go over the same spot… it still planes wood to whatever thickness you have it set at. That’s what determines the chip size.
The newer blades on the Milwaukee probably helped more than anything.
I appreciate the feedback, it always helps.. thanks for watching 👍
