By reading through the policy details, looks like you can travel freely within the city of Shanghai and provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, not sure if you can go to Beijing, as it belongs to another visa-free region (the 京津冀 region). But you certainly are not restricted to Shanghai only...
answer from AI: Under the 144-hour visa-free transit policy in China, travelers are generally limited to staying within the specific region where they entered. For example, if a traveler enters China through Shanghai, they are allowed to move within the Shanghai municipality, Jiangsu Province, and Zhejiang Province. Similarly, if they enter through Beijing, they can travel within the Beijing municipality, Tianjin municipality, and Hebei Province. However, travelers are not permitted to travel freely throughout all of China under this policy. The purpose of the 144-hour visa-free transit is to facilitate short-term stays for transit purposes in the specific region of entry.
China has alot to offer as a travel destination. It is unfortunate many people are easily swayed by negative western media (due to political and economic reasons). Many have not even travelled out of their own state/province/country at all and thus have to depend on the biased nature of the media. Go see for yourselves if you are financially able to do so.

A little travel advice, If you're interested in seeing the chinese advancements and history: If you want to explore the 3000 years of history, go to Xi'an. If you want to explore the 1000 years of history, go to Beijing. If you want to explore the last 100 years of China going from colonization to modernization, go to Shanghai. If you want to see modern blade-runner-like infrastructure and seemingly impossible urban planning done in the last 40 years, go to Chongqin. If you want to see the future, go to Shenzhen. That's a very very rough and overall thing to say, and If we add the different landscapes and biomes that China offers, there would be no end to the list. And what's the best thing of all of that? That the whole China has first class safety no matter where you go, so there's nothing like "being in the wrong place at the wrong time" kind of bs, and you are able to freely explore.
I believe that anyone who comes to China and feels the cultural heritage of this land will be attracted, and can not help but feel the different scenery of various places, and the Chinese food is very delicious! I am in Guangzhou, travel to recommend some foreign friends to go to Qinghai Lake, Xinjiang Kashgar, Dunhuang, Hainan Island, recently resigned to go to Xinjiang Taklamakan Desert bicycle ride 700km, from Bazhou to Kashgar, Lanzhou Ran back to Guangzhou is very happy!
those are not police, they are security guards. unlike in the US, they are very nice, if you get into a problem, such as lost something or looking for a place, you can approach them.
I found many foreigners can't tell the difference between security guards and the police. Whenever they see security guards, they think they see police
As a Chinese/ Taiwanese, I’ve been to China and Shanghai for many times. In the past few years they’ve progressed too fast not only for their hardware- high rises / electric cars/ cell phone payments, but cultural wise- service quality/ food/ and their people. I often tell my friends and relatives about it, they should all visit China when they have the chance to experience how China is like😊 Thank you Steve and Ivana for taking me to the streets I’ve never been in Shanghai! Very glad to see it and will share it to everyone I know!!😉
not everybody wears uniform is policeman. some of them are the private security guard hired by the malls, and their uniforms are similar to the police uniform. and don't worry about the policeman everywhere! if you got any question or problem you can just go and ask them for help, they would help you as much as they can.

worked in downtown shanghai for 5.5 years, i used to walk along east nanjing road every day to take metro, enjoy your stay in china, one suggestion is to try restaurants in those back allies, which is far better than those touristy areas
Great video. I'm a British expat living in Shanghai since 2005, so it was interesting to see Shanghai through a fresh pair of eyes. McDonald's prices are the same ordering from the machines or the counter. If there's a price difference it is probably NOT the same coffee. "Natie" is simply the Chinese translation of Latte, but I think you may have ordered from the McCafe menu which is more expensive than the McDonald's menu (and slightly better quality). The noodle you chose was braised soy sauce beef soup noodles, but the restaurant itself is Chongqing style, which is a city in the south west of China where most of the dishes are spicy.
I go to China every year. Chinese cities are very safe, both during the day and even more so at night. China's culture is also very diverse, and so is its food. It’s not like talking about Chinese people as promoted by European and American media.
Just don't fall asleep on a park bench after a few beers. The hobo patrol will round you and you'll awaken on a train to Inner Mongolia, lol. There's a reason you don't see homeless in big tourist areas (and it's not that they don't exist...)
Let me correct you. The 144-hour visa is not limited to Shanghai travel. It can be used to travel to any other city in China. As long as you can enter the country smoothly, there are no travel restrictions. It just tells you that you can only stay in China for a period of 144 hours and then you have to leave the country. When staying in a hotel, no one will look at your visa. You just need to go through a check-in process. Even Chinese people who stay in a hotel need to register with their ID card. It is just a formality to check and prevent wanted criminals from entering the hotel.
according to rules, you can only stay in shanghai, you are not permitted to travel to other cities.. but yea, i don't think anyone would've cared if you travelled around china, as long as you leave from shaghai within 144 hours

It's not "any other city". Currently there are 20 cities for 144 hours transfer visa and 52 cities for 72 hours. And once you entered one of the cities, you are usually only allowed to tour within one province, although for Shanghai you are allowed to tour within the two nearby provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, for Beijing you are allowed to tour within Tianjing and Hebei.

Many of Google's operations exited China, so Google Maps is largely unavailable in China. Apple Maps works fine. I remember that China's map apps, such as Gaode Maps and DiDi, are available in English. The noodles you ate are called "Chongqing Xiaomian". Chongqing is a city bordering Szechuan Province, and used to be part of Szechuan province, so the food flavour is almost the same as Szechuan. The spicy soup base of the noodles contains Sichuan peppercorns, which contain peppercorn oil that makes the mouth feel numb, a typical feature of Sichuan food flavour. Have a good trip.

I will use Google Translate for the following content (this represents my subjective opinion) As a Simplified Chinese user, I am very happy to see such a neutral, objective and real video. To me, China is a very good tourist destination, but I have to admit that China’s political system and its social concepts may not be consistent with some people. Indeed, China's performance in some areas such as politics and social concepts is unsatisfactory, but this does not prevent China from having a safe social environment, delicious food, and beautiful scenery. Due to the existence of China's GFW (commonly known as the Internet Firewall by the Chinese), it is difficult for Chinese users to access the foreign world, which also allows some media to vilify this country. I used to like a saying: "If you don't know the whole story, you can't comment." I don't want to see foreign Internet users deny everything about China based on just a rumor. China's culture is brilliant, its people are kind, its society is safe, and its food is beautiful. I hope that more and more foreign friends can come to China to experience Chinese culture firsthand. China welcomes you!
Great video! Well done. It's wonderful to hear you had a fantastic time in China. My wife and I explored Beijing in September this year, and we'd love to see you visit Beijing in your future videos.

China is an amazing country. Everything is happening here. I am so exciting to be part of this great country who are peaceful and friendly. All the best things are retained in China. But you need to be here to experience it.
Foreigners, your IQ has been ruined. I lived in China when I was child, I saw my neibor get arrested just because she wanted to have second baby. They took her to hospital and forced her to abortion.
Hi, J. The cameras are mainly for forensics and crime prevention to prevent disputes. We ordinary people never pay attention to this, only criminals are afraid. China has a large population density, so the police will stand in crowded places, like the kiosk in your video, in order to quickly stop illegal activities. Some Western media are vilifying China. In reality, Chinese people are very friendly, and only those who have been here can truly feel it. Thank you for your video, it was brilliant.
Ah, I caught your trick. You pivoted from "vilifying China" (in reality, it's vilifying the _government_ of China), to Chinese people. The people and the government are two different things. Almost everybody in the west loves Chinese people, it's only the government that many people have an issue with. Online, the trolls like to pretend that criticizing the government is the same thing as criticizing the people. It's not the same thing at all. Nice try.
@@idogtv I don't think white ppl differentiate the two. CHina means much more than what its gov says or does. But you always burry the difference. Nice try.
@@idogtv The more you pretend to "correctly" legitimize an entire narrative against the label "China" (instead of the CURRENT gov), the more likely Chinese people become the victims of collateral damage. The entire narrative gives people a feeling like Chinese people are culturally subordinate, less enlightened, easy to be manipulated, and are all like trolls. In fact, this is a population of 1.4 billion... 99% of white people can't even name a third Chinese city except for BJ and SH... how can you come to the conclusion that "everybody in the west loves Chinese people"... there is a giant leap of logic. ...
@@tuckerwang7677 "China means much more than what its gov says or does." Yeah, that's literally what I said. Did you not understand me? That's my whole point. That's why it's absolutely idiotic for the trolls to bury the difference between China and the government. That's what _I_ said. You just took what I said, reworded it, claimed that you "don't think white ppl differentiate the two" and then acted as if I somehow equated the government with the people of China... That's the exact _opposite_ of what I did in my comment. The trolls are the ones who pretend they're the same. Why did you pretend like my comment didn't differentiate the two, when it clearly did? It seems like you're responding to a completely different comment. You certainly didn't respond to _my_ comment. Because what you said makes absolutely no sense as a response to what I said. Nice try.
@@idogtvI understand what you're saying, but the sad fact is that our mainstream media and our politicians have so many Americans convinced that China itself is simply an evil nation, with little or no differentiating between the people and the government. As bad as the Chinese government might be, they do not in any way pose a military threat to us or to anyone. But our politicians seem to be chomping at the bit to go to war with China. Neither China nor Russia comes close to the American Empire for the number of innocent people killed over the past 30 years. America is the most violent, warmongering, arrogant nation on earth.
You guys remind me so much of my wife and I when we travel, we're also from Toronto and were in Shenzhen in August but have been to China many times. Very interesting. Living in Shanghai, recently I saw many foreigners with huge backpacks and confusing faces hanging around in the streets. Curious if they are doing well wandering in this big city so i checked the video. The couple's cute and the video itself reminds me of the pure joy of being a tourist exploring a total different culture when i was young in Europe. Those food vendors must have been expecting her to speak to them in Mandarin and must have been caught offguard when she couldn't speak the language or read the menu. I was also wondering why she didn't try to speak in Mandarin, but when you said she's Indonesian Chinese, then I understood why. In China, everything is in Chinese characters, and Shanghai has its own unique dialects too, depending on which part of the province you're from. Like Suzhou is an hour's drive from Shanghai, but has a different dialect from Shanghai. Still, if you can speak or read mandarin, you might be able to get by. You'd need to have a pretty good grasp of the language though to communicate more effectively, 'cos in China, it tends to be ALL mandarin and you can't even mix in any English words the way we might do in Singapore. In fact, Chinese people who come to Singapore are probably quite shocked at how we mix English and Mandarin when we say that we are speaking in Mandarin. To them, it's Singapore-style Mandarin. Also, there are words for the same things that are different. It's just like how American English is different from British English, even though it's the same language. You have different English words for the same things. Like tap and faucet, sink and basin, color and colour, lift and elevator, flat and apartment... well, you get the idea. So Chinese people can tell if you are from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore or Mainland China, based on the Mandarin words you use and how you speak it.
Ahh, I was wondering why she didn't speak Chinese lol it makes sense that she's indo Chinese. They massacred Chinese people by the masses and people were forced not to learn their mother tongue anymore unlike Malaysian Chinese. In China, there are also regional dialects but mandarin is the unifying common tongue

This is literally the first video I have watched about China. After watching this one and your "Uptown" video in Manila, I am feeling a little bit torn. I plan to retire to Asia and do a good bit of traveling within the region. These very upscale areas look incredible. They are not the typical neighborhoods or cities that represent the country as a whole. They are very modern, clean, and tourist attractions. You have to travel outside these areas to see the "real country" you are visiting. But it makes me "torn" because these areas look amazing! Makes me wonder if I want to pay more and live in the tourist area or get a place out in the burbs where life is more similar to the locals and a little more affordable. Thanks for the peek into China, I hadn't really considered it as a travel destination before, but I do now. It looks like a good time, good food, good shopping, and a good experience.
I’m a Chinese who live in Manila, China is much more modern and high tech, in Manila only uptown area is good, also I live here. But I recommend u choose Manila, coz here is an English country, u can easily communicate with other people. If u live in China, u can’t read Chinese, everything is difficult.😢
Btw, HongKong is a great city for living, also international environment good for expat, but quite expensive for live cost. If u rich enough, Hong Kong is the best choice.
In China, you can go to the police on the street for any difficulty in traveling, don't be afraid of them! They will give you help ❤ Western Media Always Smears Chinese Police

I watched several TH-camrs who traveled to Shanghai, China, and they all went to try noodles, which is really interesting. China is a country with a very diverse cuisine, and the culinary style varies greatly from region to region. To enjoy delicious dishes, it's better to go to larger restaurants. The noodles you ate are not a local Shanghai dish but are flavored like Sichuan and Chongqing noodles, so they are a bit spicy. Shanghai local dishes are generally a bit sweet. Additionally, every restaurant in Shanghai has a hygiene rating symbol. The yellow face in your video indicates that the hygiene of the restaurant is average, while a green smiling face represents a higher hygiene standard.

A little travel advice, If you're interested in seeing the chinese advancements and history:
If you want to explore the 3000 years of history, go to Xi'an.
That the whole China has first class safety no matter where you go, so there's nothing like "being in the wrong place at the wrong time" kind of bs, and you are able to freely explore.
great advice! Thanks so much!

It's obvious that you know the menu absolutely.
yeah you‘ve been living here for so long so you know hahaha,as a Chinese myself i time to time got confused about menu
I go to China every year. Chinese cities are very safe, both during the day and even more so at night. China's culture is also very diverse, and so is its food. It’s not like talking about Chinese people as promoted by European and American media.
Agree 💯, so safe day and night. China is amazing.

@emgoodit Go to any normal hotel in the world, you have to check in with an ID. A love hotel on the other hand...lol
according to rules, you can only stay in shanghai, you are not permitted to travel to other cities.. but yea, i don't think anyone would've cared if you travelled around china, as long as you leave from shaghai within 144 hours
Aber wenn du mit äuslandisches Pass nach Tibet gehen möchtest, brauchst du nur einen chinesischen Reiseführer zu suchen, dann darfst du es tun. @@陳書俊-w9t
No. In the hotel system, the receptionist has to input the visa number too.

As a Simplified Chinese user, I am very happy to see such a neutral, objective and real video.

Please use Mainland instead of China when Hong Kong and Taiwan appear together. Thank you.

such a nice video!BTW,as a local guy ,welcome to Suzhou if you wanna enjoy the world-famous classical gardens
Welcome
Welcome! And we are building our country to a better one, hoping offering the world a better China!
You need more videos about China, so you will find a new world.
10 days later, ice and snow festival will fully open in Harbin, highly recommend you take a look.
In China, you can go to the police on the street for any difficulty in traveling, don't be afraid of them! They will give you help ❤ Western Media Always Smears Chinese Police
good to know, thanks!
Western media not just smear Chinese police, they smear and demonize EVERYTHING in China! In their description, China is the most horrible hell on earth, if not in whole universe😂, so make sure no one interested in China or visit China or you will "disappeared" if one word said wrong🤣, and how amazing many people in the West buy into many logically retarded lies manufactured by western media, sad😢
Chinese police are evil to Chinese but very nice to foreigners
It is great that bloggers can give an objective and authentic experience of coming to China.
I have to admire your courage of wandering into a completely new place without much research and not speaking/knowing the local language! But if you do a little bit research, use some of the local apps (including translation), you surely can enjoy much more about China! Wish you a happy time in China!
Unfortunately lots of the local apps (including alipay) needs a Chinese phone number so is not available to tourists

Interesting that your video popped up on my recommendation. I’m glad it did. I’m also born and raised in Toronto. I came over to Asia (Hong Kong) when I was 27 for work. Fast forward 23 years, I’m still here! Love both your reactions of Shanghai. I’ve been there like a dozen times and still love that city. Are you still there as of this video? Enjoy the rest of your adventure! Looking forward to more videos!

oh got it! We got another mouth number video coming up! And we discovered the oil
The translation is braised beef noodle soup. Sichuan pepper is the common name for the spice.
I am so glad to watch your journey to Shanghai. This will help me to plan my next trip to China soon. Things like how to buy subway tickets, etc. I am impressed by how much he knows about the Shanghai subway. Liked, Shared and Subscribed.

There is a trending food theme called MALA, literally translating to numb and spicy. So the braised beef noodles you guys had is probably that, with the spice toned down as per your request, but the numb still retained, and is due to the Sichuan peppercorns

I'm glad you two had such a fun time in China! I'm glad to see your video. In fact, the "police" you see on the streets are not police, but security personnel of property companies. They are only responsible for maintaining order. Of course, you can also see police and armed police on important holidays.
