      I hear you, I too have a hard time connecting to the gods. Always have. But, I at the very least acknowledge their presence and existence even if they aren’t there. Whenever I’m outside I like to appreciate nature and the life/substance it provides and that’s how I can kind of connect to the gods. Skäl.

    Metaphorically I think Ymir could be the raw, unformed planet, incapable of supporting human life. The gods shaped it and formed the enclosure of Midgard, perhaps our atmosphere protecting us from space rocks? But they helped make it into the more relatively "tame" world we are able to inhabit and enjoy
    All very interesting and insightful theories!

    Your theory is quite logical. It would make sense to put yourself behind the eyes of the ancestors and see their perspective of what's in front of them. Trees and mountains by nature are the protectors. Trees are known to stop flooding from torrential downpours. Mountains bounce off the damaging winds. I lived in Tennessee for 17 years and the town I lived in was a valley. We were hardly ever touched by tornadoes or even hurricanes that were traveling our way. Of course things are changing due to industrial development. 😕 Great video. I hope the elder gentleman learned something from you.😊

    • @ProtoIndoEuropean88
      @ProtoIndoEuropean88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trees also filter the heat from the sun, feeding off its sunlight which benefits them and benefits us. Everything works for the sake of itself and for something else
      unfortunately the same peoople who ruin nature's way with industrialism, are now trying to alter biologic life itself with tehcnology. One has to see the plans of the world economic forum to know this

    I love your theories and the way you think outside the box in general.
    My theory for why we are here: I think we're here to make the world and (eventually) the universe a better place. It is our duty to protect nature and the sanctity of life.

    • @monkeymoment6478
      @monkeymoment6478 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Make the world a better place”, such a vague platitude. You describe humanity like a Christian. We just exist. If anything, I agree with it being out “duty” to be keepers of nature, as well as the natural order of the world.

    Your last theory makes sense since it seems even neighboring villages worshipped different gods or even the local land spirits and not the gods at all. The common link always seems to be the ancestors.

  • @TTV_Glitter_Bomb

    I’ve really been asking my spirit to help me make more sense of how to cope with feeling like I have came from an old world time. I do not fit in to today’s society. My ancestors are Nordic pagan, but sometimes I feel like I’ve lived a life before this one with my ancestors. Sometimes I wonder why I am in this time & realm. It’s been very difficult for me, but watching videos that are this informative is exactly the kind of help I need to understand things better.
    I do think Midgard & earth are working together separately. I think Midgard is exactly what it says it is, but a MID GUARD between realms to protect us.

    Another great video, Jacob! You’re capturing the beauty of the world well as you travel, so worry not on that front.
    As for Midgard and Earth, I believe its two-fold. Your theory at the end of it all being localized is very true, especially given the times of when it was created. However, I also believe it is true on a much larger scale too. Why did it only have to be one or the other?
    On the grand scale, I believe Earth is Earth (Egads! A revelation!) and Midgard represents the entirety of the universe. The physical realm. Or at the very least, the solar system as one other person (John Deslatte) commented earlier.
    And thus, the former serves as a microcosm of the latter. Two layers of the same truth.
    Just my two cents!

    • @TheWisdomOfOdin
      @TheWisdomOfOdin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I do believe the ancestors would record these micro views, but in the micro they do add to the macro universe. Just like how everything is a cycle, down to the smallest cells, to the birth and death of stars.

  • @redacted588

    Your correct on that Odin and his brothers, created Midgard for a purpose we might not even know. Since he also made Asgard for one purpose for the Aesir Gods, since they were always at war with the Jötuns/giants, and the Vanir Gods, since Odin and the Asgardians tried to invade Jötunheim, and Vanaheim, but it is said when Ragnarök happens Surtur will destroy Asgard, and the wolves (i dont remember their names) ests the moon and the sun during ragnarök since Midgard is in a long winter, since it wont make since the Giants would try to take over Midgard themselves.

  • @DaliwolfBacon
    @DaliwolfBacon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I came to the conclusion that Midgard was earth before Ragnarok. I feel like we are in a time "between Ragnaroks" (feeling that Ragnarok is a cyclical occurrence) and protection from giants isn't necessary right now...so there isn't a Midgard type protective magical dome over us at the moment. You gave us much to think about.

    Great video and thoughts. Midgard, which I like to personally call mittilgart or mittangard as the Old High German would've been closer to my continental ancestors, is a living concept that evolved organically. Later it was written down by the Norse in the Eddas, told through great lore filled with allegories. To me its not so much the literal world around us as the deeper metaphysical and spiritual existence on all levels, to be understood in an animistic sense of the totality of beings and spirits imbuing everything. So it touched upon something deep and primal, grounding us to the Earth as much as observing our place within the Cosmos above. I like this quote by Wolf Dieter Storl:
    "Of course, not everyone in central Europe was a farmer or shepherd at that time. Hunters and gatherers continued to survive in the vast forests. They did not see a contrast between nature and culture like the Neolithic farmers did; for them, the forest was neither strange nor dangerous, but an extension of 'home'. The idea of Midgard - a peaceful world, with a garden in the middle protected by the gods, surrounded by a perilous, external wild world (Utgard) - is based on this late Stone Age ideology." (Storl, The Untold History of Healing: Plant Lore and Medicinal Magic from the Stone Age to Present, Berkeley, CA: North Atlantic Books, 2017, pp. 102-103)
    We can also understand it with the Celtic concept of the Mediolanum: "It meant something like 'sanctuary' or 'sacred enclosure' or 'the centre' or 'middle'. The word 'Mediolanum' is thought to have been related to a notion that is also found in other mythologies: the idea that our world is a Middle Earth whose sacred sites correspond to places in the upper and lower worlds." (Graham Robb, The Ancient Paths: Discovering the Lost Map of Celtic Europe, London: Picador, 2014, p. xvi)
    Thus, our "physical" Midgard is inseparable from the upper and lower realms. Perhaps we can also reach back to shamanic times for insights as you also did in your video about the Norse and Hellenic Gods. That Midgard (and other realms) are not merely "physical" places that can be located, much less conceptualized fully, was also brilliantly expressed by Norwegian scholar Eldar Heide in a paper available online: "Contradictory cosmology in Old Norse myth and religion - but still a system?," in Maal og Minne: Norske Studier (Oslo), Vol. 106, 2014, pp. 102-143. ... As with so many other things, there is a deeper Mystery and Wisdom within all aspects of Paganism/Heathenry - and that's truly what makes our faith most beautiful and enriching!

This was placed in the exact center of vast space and hedged round with yamirs eyebrows for bulwarks or ramparts.

    Fascinating idea! It's given me a great deal to think about, especially as I'm at the beginning of my Norse studies and am grappling to get a hold of the basics. Up till now, I've heard "Earth" and "Midgard" used interchangeably. Perhaps Midgard is a state of mind, and giants breaking the walls of Midgard is the breaking of our perspective and what we thought we knew to be true. Ragnarök would then be the fiery transformation of the soul before beginning a new chapter. The myths we've inherited would truly be the metaphors of the gods used to help us understand how to go about the process of radical change--which we all experience at least once in our lives, and usually more.
    Or maybe I'm talking out of my hat! LOL
    Lots for me to think about! Thank you for the work you do!

    • @samaelcercunnin5227
      @samaelcercunnin5227 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds reasonable, but there are times when a greater mass of humanity is transformed. We may each go through spiritual transformations in any time, but there are underlying influences, not understood by the primitive unevolved scientific understanding of the 21st century, which can cause a great many more people to go through transformation all at the same time. Those are times when golden ages rise. Sociological change is extreme in those times. Only a fool would imagine things are always static. Yet secular science puts forward this idea that things beyond our awareness never change. The scientists should be the first to realise that is a fallacious theory. The number of unseen influences are far beyond anything we have imagined. I appreciate they may fearfully cling to the erroneous idea that humanity has absolute control over nature, even in this primitive era, but it's just a psychological trick to make people feel safe. It is far better that people understand the necessity to be strong, because humanity doesn't have such fabled superpowers of environmental control.

    Kinda sounds like Jupiter. Being that it protects the earth from cosmic debris. Or maybe even the entire solar system, being on the same scale of protection. Especially once you leave the solar system you have fire plasma radiation that encircles the entire solar system. Which kinda works with Muspelheim. And why anything else to back this up? Well, Space Cow! Cosmic Moo

    • @kylewilson6478
      @kylewilson6478 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd like to think that the nine realms are the planets in our solar system and Midgard is the astroid belt built to protect us from outside forces, be it 'aliens' (jhotuns) and yggdrasil be the milky way since our ancestors would look to the sky at night and see it as a gigantic branch/tree.

    • @VoodooViking
      @VoodooViking 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kylewilson6478 yeah I thought about that. But the lore talks of Midgard and earth being within Midgard. So it tended to lead me to this plane is Midgard. And earth is contained within that. And the other realms are on another plane altogether. Just how I deciphered the lore. Nothing against any other views

  • @TheIronWolfExperience
    @TheIronWolfExperience ปีที่แล้ว

    Midgard and the realms kinda fall into the idea of dimensions. I don’t see these beliefs as primitive knowledge I think they knew more then we do now and we are the primitive ones in context to what they knew. I think a lot of knowledge was lost and secrets kept from us which is one of many reasons I respect Odin is his thirst for knowledge/wisdom. Awesome video! Keep it up you teach me a lot brother :) the Gods called me back from Christianity which personally I felt empty it wasn’t for me and didn’t come natural like this.

  • @Ben-ur8ys

    The idea of Midgard being a balance just makes sense. If you take Midgard to be Earth and consider Earth in the now and the ups and downs of societies then this balance rings true. Midgard, as a realm, is protected by the gods and has the Jotnar trying to invade, this shows a balance, taking the two as ‘good’ and ‘bad’ respectively. The balance of Midgard and thus the balance of society makes you realise the truth behind this theory. Throughout history peace and war occur frequently and often one after the other, this could be Midgard’s nature of balance.
    Thought on this?

    My interpretation of Yggdrasil is the world tree is the network of mountains which branch out from Eurasia and each realm is a continent. And that the Bifrost was the bridges of ice that existed during the ice age that connected each realm. I also believe that Odin and Noah were the same man but known by different names and The Flood and Ragnarok are the same. And that he lived 950 years and was 600 years old when Yggdrasil was submerged in water. I also believe he was the true inspiration for Santa because he built a large sleigh and rasied animals that would pull it across the Bifrost to the various realms where he oversaw the various tribes which eventually became nations and the different races.
    Perhaps Midgard was a particular area that was once covered in large glaciers that eventually drifted out to sea and melted, carving large valleys along the way. My guess is Midgard is Europe. And it is in the middle because of the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas.

    Midgard between heaven and earth, bit like humans are half gods. Gard is a word almost like garden, but can mean a farm also. Enclosure and kempt, an enclosed habit also. So meaning was probably a habit area between heaven and earth. My take, being of Swedish origin and having a good sense of the language.

    Concerning terminology, I would refer to Paganism as a religion not a faith. Religion is active - sacrificial - giving to the Gods. Faith is passive - sacramental - God giving a gift. In religion humanity goes to the Gods; in faith God comes to humanity. These terms refer to very different dispositions visa vi humans and Gods/God.

    In this same vein, we get a lot of different names in Grimnismal where Odin says the gods live. Could it also be that what we refer to as Asgard is actually just the wall that was built by that one Jotun and Svadilfari that surrounds the lands of the gods?

    Trees and groves are our sacred aka holy places. Our beautiful religion is so important . It’s our ancestral. Inheritance. And anyone from any race can be Norse pagan. There was Viking pagans from all races so there is no gate keeping. I love the ancestral venerating and trying to get closer to the ancient spirts of old. I love my faith and my folk. Hail To all the modern norsemen

      Hi. Good comment about our ancestors and Sacred Spaces, but I think saying there were Viking Pagans from all races is a huge stretch. The Norse were the most racially homgeneous people in Europe. The recent study showed this. It showed that there was some non-Scandinavian dna in some of the samples, but in the main, it was from other Northern European countries, such as Britain and Estonia. An amount of Southern European was found in some samples, and this was typically hyped up and distorted by the press, so now we get "Multi Cultural Vikings" One of the main professors involved in the project quit, because of this twisting of the facts! It's all about disconnecting us with our roots.

      There were not “viking” (Germanic) pagans from all races. The most diverse you probably would have got was a viking of partial slavic, anglo, or celtic descent if they were a son of a local slave/concubine/wife from those areas they frequented. These pagan beliefs were deeply tied to ethnicity/tribe back in the day. Each tribe and ethnic grouping had their own beliefs, they didn’t just “convert” like it’s Christianity. Even when Germanic tribes invaded the former Roman Empire and took places over, only the German ruling elite practiced Germanic paganism, before becoming Christian. I’m not trying to gatekeep, but this is revisionist history, trying to justify making Germanic/Norse paganism into a universal religion like Christianity, it’s not.

    What if midgard ties into the hollow earth theory, and once humans look ved underground until they were able to defeat the giants, thus coming out of caves to inhabit the land

    MIdgard is earth (Flat Earth) Antartica is the Giant Ice Walls, MIdgard or Earth is a flat plain of the 3D Model of Earth Odin and his brothers created for us (Concept). Outside of the flat plain Earth aka MIdgard exist other beings who know about us and are hostile against us on the actual planet we're on. we are to never travel beyond Antarctica for something bad will happen to us. The Firmament and Dome is mentioned in the Antartic Treaty in the Encyliapedia Britannica - The Bible means The Firmament so basically speaking if Earth is a flat plain that means Heaven is Beyond Antartica and the Governments of the world knows about this and it logicallyf fits in every mythloogy which comes from Egyptian and egypitian came from Sumeria which talks about Annunaki which also fits this logic too!!

    Charlemagne is one that wanted our religion destroyed. But you can’t destroy our faith because the gods have shown how powerful they are cause now they are in movies and comice. So they never left. And it was a tragedy that meh chopped down and tryed to destroy all our sacred holy places

    Reality is not static in three dimensions. Everyone creates it with their perspectives. Their interpretations based on the symbols within them. It is not a simple matter of everyone sees an object and recognises this is a conglomeration of atoms with a mass and dimensions of 'blah blah blah'. People see what they see. Reality is distorted by opinion, and it varies through centuries and millennia. Utgard has leaked into Midgard. Asgard fell in 2020. The Christmas Star marked the passing of Baldur. Ragnarok has begun again. The movements of the planets are independent from the petty opinions of humans. The planets continue revolving, and cannot be stopped by some windbag with a lectern. Everything is ongoing, and repairs are being made. Asgard will rise again. To those who have faith, this will have value. To those without faith, only money really has value, and it is worthless. They will not prosper.
    Don't underestimate your intuition. Frigg see everything. She is real, and the things people realise through intuition are passed down by muses. She has always been here. She watches, and she knows what is happening. Everything is planned far in advance. The people of the past didn't know how much they really knew. The stories they left us are more than just stories. Different interpretations in different times and different lands with different cultures, but always the same presence, and the same principles.
