      John Wilkinson, Thank you for your comment John, much appreciated. I really didn’t know whether to post the video or not as it doesn’t fill you with joy🤦🏼‍♂️. However at the end of the day it was nothing anyone could have done and no one was hurt. Jason is an excellent rider. If he was some crazy speed freak constantly over revving his bike then that could have been different. When this happens the first thing we all do is type it into Google and yes you do find others have experienced this, but I cannot find a video of the end result.

    Hi, First of all. Your a Great Dad to work on the Bike for your Son. Second, your a Great Mechanic. It’s too bad the Piston has a Hole in it. You could have just replaced the Cylinder, Head and Piston, along with the New Valves and everything. At least the GS has been around long enough to where you can find a Good Engine for a Decent Price. You’re going to have a big Job ahead of you, but at least you are a Great Mechanic. If anyone can handle the Job, I think you could. Thanks for making these Videos. I ride a 2006 R1200GS and have really learned a lot from you. I’m glad your Son is Safe. It could have gone really bad if the Engine had locked up. He had a Angel Riding with him.👍❤️

    Always thought BMW bikes were the most reliable but for the valve to drop its bad form, it moved me to look at reliability tables and BMW bikes, like their cars, are very mediocre (and drive both a BMW car and bike), with regards to reliability the Japanese have it licked, I’ve bought new BMW bikes only to find frame and cylinder rusting, to be fair BMW fixed immediately but I’d rather not have had the problems in the first place. Right getting my RT out and going for a ride, hope I make it back without the piston falling out, but as the great Normski services my bike I’m sure it won’t!

    Very interesting video, thank you sir! After an adventure on a rented 1250, I want to leave my F650 behind and buy a real GS. After a lot of research into affordability, horsepower, and durability, I really thought the 1200 GS was going to be my top pick. After this video I'm scared. Are many of these serious flaws known among YT viewers? The later R1250 is too expensive, the 1150 and 1100 have less horsepower and Nm, I also find 5 gears little for highways. Greetings from Belgium.

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Deureka from Belgium 🤗…it does seem that the problems where on the 2005-2007 1200GS. Some say that there were faults in the valves in those early 1200 bikes. Not heard of any similar failures outside of those years. So you should be safe if you choose 2008 GS onward.

    This is just what you might have to do if you come across this situation. You strip down and clean as far as you have to before you scrap the lot or recover what you can. The piston will get a hammering @ 8000 rpm in a few seconds before failure for instance. Other than that I think it's f*cked!

    Sad story, luckily it was only engine damage...
    I have exactly the same bike with 30,000 miles, affraid of having similar failure ,
    Do you have any clue on why this happened or how it can be prevented?
    was it a tensor? broken chain sliders? defective/loose chain? low oil pressure?

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Carlos, yes you are correct, imagine at 70mph if the engine had seized in peak traffic, Jason would have been thrown off the bike! The damage of course was so great it is hard to find out what actually went wrong. However the chains and sliders appeared OK, both exhaust valves had disappeared. The input valves were still there but very bent. Never had a problem with oil pressure. The guy who runs a tyre changing mobile service here, Mark, is an ex Superbike mechanic. He says it is rare to ‘drop a valve’ on the road bikes but he has seen it a few times in the 2004-2007 models and always the right hand side cylinder.? What does that mean?? He said there would have been no indication or warning. On race bikes he has seen them blow the Cylinder head off. BMW chief mechanic said he had only seen it once in 10 years.

If everything is running well I would not touch the valves🤔. I appreciate it is a hard decision because it does appear that there is a design flaw in the valve set up for these 2005-2007 1200 engines, but if you spend all that money and time what guarantee would you ever have that it had cured the problem. As one BMW engineer told me he had seen it once in 10 years. So a very small percentage of bikes, I would keep your bike regularly serviced and love it😍

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Anth, I also thought that a boxer engine would run forever! No I do not think it is common at all thank goodness, but I have discovered that it does happen especially in the 2004 - 2007 model of the GS. It also seems to be the right hand cylinder and around the 60,000 mile range? You do find threads on Google of riders experiencing the same. One thread was very interesting saying that there were a number of recalls by BMW on this model during those years to remap the fuel injection as it was running too rich (or the other way round). If Jason’s bike was not done, and there is no evidence, then maybe the valve was weakened over time, we will never know. As you could see the exhaust valves are not even there anymore. Here in Derbyshire we have a brilliant mobile motorbike tyre fitter, Mark Croft, who I always get to change my tyres. He was a Superbike mechanic for years and services and repairs bikes as a mobile mechanic. I rang Mark who says that dropping a valve is unusual for normal road bikes but he has seen it many times in the racing circuit, however he also assured me that it does happen and within 2 seconds will smash the inside to bits. Mark says we really have two choices: throw it away or buy an engine from a breakers.🤔

    BMW installing that flapper valve was the most stupid solution...many owner takes that damn thing off.

    Paul griffiths had the same problem on his bmw,i think he was quoted £1200 he got rid off it and he would never buy another bmw.

      Yes you are right. Normally 2005-2007 1200GS, there appears to have been a problem with the valves😱

    So it’s the same engine as the RT it’s the K 26 I’m just a couple different years are just not as good or what

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I often wonder that myself. It must be the same engine in the RT for 2005 - 2007 but I have never heard of an RT engine blowing up like the stories of the GS?? What on earth does that mean? I fitted the second hand 2005 engine into my son's GS as you see on the video and then sold the bike. Last year I heard from yet another owner who had bought the bike from a dealer and he said it was running perfectly. So it just seems that it is only a few bikes that fail? Of course you never know which ones🥵

    I’d be absolutely gutted but there again it’s precisely why I avoid BMW like the plague. To own one of them outside of warranty hand without deep pockets is a brave man’s game. As you suggest with all that metal flying around at speed even a complete strip and rebuilt will guarantee finding every last bit so I’d personally have just swapped the motors out. Heartbreaking.

    The only GS s that are worth buying, are those with the name, Suzuki infront of them.

    Yeah, I hate you just be a critic the whole time but you can reuse those clamps buddy, even though it says they’re not reusable ever use them and takes a little finesse
