I'm from Russia. And we were allies with the United States in World War II (and in the first as well). My mother was 14 years old, but she always remembered the American processed cheese that she took with her to the cinema in 1942. It was given to children on the advice of doctors. It was so delicious that she ate it and fell asleep in the hall. And an American film was shown - "Serenade of the Sunny Valley" with the Glenn Miller orchestra. Then she was hungry and very scared. But this funny musical movie, as well as American stew and cheese, saved many Russians. Glenn Miller's music, she loved all her life. He gave many the strength to survive. Why are we such enemies now?

The Russian people ( 600,000- 40 MILLION ) were slaughtered by Stalin...

Ive gone through many musical phases in my life. Rock, Soul, Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Classic Country. More and more I find myself coming back to these big band/swing vids. These guys were the rockers of their day and its easy to see why it became so big. All those horns playing "decadent" music. The real, original wall of sound.

There's a binaural (= near-stereo) copy of the performance available on CD. It was reassembled from separate tracks that Fox had recorded to get better balance. Plus the frequency range goes up to something like 16 kHz, or almost high fidelity. It’s about as close to hearing the band live as any of us can be fortunate to experience.

Actually, you're not hearing what you're seeing. For a movie, they record the piece in a studio first. Then, they film the scene while the studio recording is playing on speakers on the set. The performers play their instruments, the singers sing their songs, all in sync with the playback. Since most movies in that era were filmed with one camera, they would do this several times using different camera setups from different angles and then the editor would work their magic to produce the final cut. It's still impressive and enjoyable, but you're not really watching a true "live performance."

I saw them in Brisbane in the '80s,( probably the same tour) Tex Beneke was leading the band. Paula Kelly Jnr was the female vocalist. They had the usual 'encore' at the end of the show. Tex Beneke thought we might like to hear their 'latest record'. It was 'In The Mood' - it brought the house down (Festival Hall) with people of all ages dancing in te isles. It was a terrific sound and I am so glad I heard it live. Many of the original band were there as well as Tex.

For whoever is asking whose here in 2024, I'm here, "JULY" 2024!!
My mother had sheet music for her organ, it was a music book for piano/organ and one of the songs was Chattanooga choo choo, I used to sing it while she played, plus growing up I'd watch all the old black and white movies on our colored t.v! All the great movies, especially Glenn Miller, Fred & Ginger, Abbott & Costello! But you still had to get up & walk over to the t.v. to change the channel!
But, My grandmother loved Glenn Miller & she played an accordian. Back in the mid-90's she was trying to sell it, used to call in to the local radio station, on Saturdays they'd allow folks to submit items for sale, the D.J. would read the item for sale and folks used to listen in and then call the station to see about contact info, etc if they were interested in buying it (this was the early-mid 90's before internet). She was in her late 60's and was downsizing her house, She told me she couldnt even sell the accordian, like new, for even a few bucks, I told her I'd take it, though I never learned to play it, it's still sitting in its original suitcase here in my house. But my best memory was taking this same grandmother, who lived in upstate NY, down to stay with me in Virginia for a few weeks. I was on my 3rd tour in the Military, working in Washington, D.C. I was surprising her with tickets I'd bought for us and my step-daughter to go see "the Glenn Miller Revival". Just watching my grandmother tap her toes or her hand on her lap keeping the beat and lip syncing the words along with the singers up on stage. They were interactive with the audience, calling on folks to "name that song" or see if they could answer some tid bit about the band. That was a pretty darned special night. I only had about 10 more good yrs with her before dimentia then alzhiemers took her. But every once in a while you get a song that sticks in your head, you keep rolling bits of the words and chorus in your head and I've heard & always believed the way to get it to stop is to actually listen to the whole song all the way through, plus I'd forgotten half the lyrics. But it made me remember my grandmother, she was a beautiful woman, raised two kids alone during the depression & WWII. My grandfather passed in 1942 from a brain tumor right after my Uncle was born and they didnt have half the medical know how back then that they do now. My grandmother made everything from scratch, everything! Even "play doh" she kept on cool whip containers in the fridge, that she let us kids help make and used food coloring to make the four basic colors. We'd sit in the kitchen with this plastic sheet on the table (so the dye would bleed into the table), and play for hours. My grandmother Never said a bad word about anyone. Always found the good in everyone. I'm listening to Glenn Miller right now and I know My grandmother is nearby, tapping her foot or keeping the beat with her hand tapping on her lap! LOVE & Miss you to BITS, Grandma!!
