    An awesome groomed trail vehicle but it would be useless in fresh powder , I commend you on a great design

    The Ackermann steering geometry works well in the snow. and love that Honda Look alike, nice work.

    Looks like a simple setup, nice job! I’d love to see a close up of your steering setup.

      Here are some photos. My original use of hose clamps for attaching steering arms to shock absorbers broke, so I repaced it with a stronger system (plastic "c-clamps"?) that at the same time allows movement (rotation around the shocks) if the forces becomes too high.
      Funny thing was that steering on only one ski worked fine. I drove half km through a rough forest path after one steering arm broke off. The loose ski wanted to point forward and followed along the path nicely. It was both funny and facinating. I guess it had todo with the angles and mounting points for the skis.

      @@matsbyggmastar620 thanks for the update! I’m building my boys a snowmobile made from a tracked snowblower and Honda 3 wheeler front forks. Your setup looks great, later down the road I’ll have to upgrade my design.

    Nice! At first I was wondering what kind of traction you would get with that tire but it did really well. :)

    • @matsbyggmastar620
      @matsbyggmastar620  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traction has only been an issue when there was about 15 cm powder snow on top of smooth ice on the lake. The snow gave plenty of resistens but there was no grip beneath it.

      Its a pice of tube welded straight on a hose clamp. I.e. it is not very strong, but seems to be strong enough. Here are two pictures I try to share via Dropbox:

    • @matsbyggmastar620
      @matsbyggmastar620  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! This one has a 125 cc Honda clone. No torque converter. On the video it has a fully automatic gearbox, no clutch. It doesn't work that well. I have replaced the engine with one with semiautomatic 3+0+R gearbox, which is nicer to drive.

    Neat project. Would've like to have seen what it could do in powder though.

    • @matsbyggmastar620
      @matsbyggmastar620  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      My intention with it was to drive on ice and snowmobile trails, so it doesn't handle powder very well. Too small contact area for that wheel. Well, it depends on the type of snow. Up to 20 cm or thereabout is ok. The engine have only one gear, so at slow speed (low engine rpm) it is quite weak. 4 speed semiautomatic gearbox would have been a better choise.

    • @nybergsgarage
      @nybergsgarage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matsbyggmastar620 yep. I want to try making a snowmobile wyself. My idea for the track is to take two old car tires, cytvmost of the side off and then stitch them together and rivet metal cleats on for grip, and to drive it have rubber tires inside the track with the track pulled tight, so i woyldnt need any drive sprocket system. Probably use a plain cvt transmission, since that's what normally snowmobiles have. Before i build that though, i need to get my 1971 sli whiz snowmobile restored.

    cool thought up! I was thinking how to attach shock absorbers from a motorcycle, a good idea!

    • @matsbyggmastar620
      @matsbyggmastar620  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rear shock absorbers is definitely the first feature I'd add if I would build a new one. Currently the soft seat with springs below it and the low pressure tire provides shock absorption. It's acceptable but could be improved.
      Version 2 would have a rear fork pivoting close to the engine sprocket and two shock absorbers, one on each side, much like a motorcycle.
