It was an overall amazing time for Italian Serie A. Moreover, 20 years ago, everything in Italy was impressive. Someone told me that Juventus had too much power within the national team, even till today , and the moment baggio left Juventus, it was an unspoken secret that del piero would replace baggio no matter what in the national team, in all honesty baggio was the greater talent , when ever baggio was on the pitch he created clearer chances for his teammates than del piero, you can compare in the 2,2 draw vs Chile in France 1998 ,and others , when baggio came in .
Del Piero had that year a grey season with Juventus. He came from a really serious injury and he was far away to be from the player he was in 96-97-98. It took still some years to see Del Piero's star to bright again. For that European Championship it was a terrible mistake never take in consideration to call Roberto Baggio because he finished the season in amazing shape

And Baggio had a magnificent performance and scored also 2 great goals. And yes, actually also Zola was in far better condition than Del Piero. Del Piero has been a great player but sometimes much luckier than Baggio and Zola because he has been called up also when he didn't deserve or wasn't fit at all.
Del Piero was not well - physically and mentally - that year. The coach did not do him a favour by selecting him, it was in early 2001 that he began to recover.
I was sad when Italy lost that final because it was the first time that I saw Italy not playing "catenaccio". With Dino Zoff, they played in my opinion with a rather attractive style, and they stopped in the semifinals the stomping Dutch that had scored a frightening amount of 13 goals in 4 games (6 alone in QF against Yugoslavia). After this defeat and the 2002 fiasco in last 16 against South Korea, they reverted to their classic style. Their best player at 2006 WC was ... Cannavaro ô_Ô
Zoff did indeed try to put a smile on Italy's football, the way he was made to resign by Berlusconi's media outlets is a shame. Then Trapattoni came and he was the one who brought back catenaccio, not Lippi. Lippi's team of 2006 was actually much more balanced than Trapattoni's, scored a fair number of goals along the way though the games against USA and Australia were horrible.
Del Piero had really big problem then after a devastated injury that cost him a whole season. After his return he seemed still traumatic and no longer have the ability to score from an open play.
To be honest here it’s not as much as del piero’s fault. He did his best as any other player wouldn’t had been able to do much better. You have to give credit to the goal keeper. His positioning was excellent and he saved the goal in both occasions because he covered the angles 📐
People are debating whether he made up for this in WC2006 but don't you remember he scored the goal that put Italy through in the group stages of the 2002 WorldCup when they were staring a consecutive defeat in the face. But yeah Wiltord's goal was harder than either Del Piero chance in this final. Likewise Trezeguet's winner. Both Wiltord & Trezeguet scored not easy chances with their weaker foot. DelPiero missed 2 good chances one with his left & one with his right.
He was one of the greatest italian player before injury 98/99, the only player that could be in the same level with baggio.. But tbh, after injury, he was just an super overrated player

While i agree people expected more from someone like him , people ignore how he was in terrible phisical and psycological conditions during euro 2000 and how in general he always had to play as a substitute and in a Role that wasn't his natural one. Il rapporto con la Nazionale fu sempre compromesso dagli infortuni, come nel '98, ma soprattutto dal fatto che a quasi tutti i CT sembrava giusto far giocare Del Piero da esterno sinistro.

Sad? You must be referring to the senior team. Serie A is in better shape then before and winning european cups. Also their is alot of exciting young talent coming up. The problem with the senior team these days is not the players in general. It's a coach thing really. Italy still looking for another Mancini or Conte. As we know when Italy is great, they win the lot. Spalletti most likely is finished before the next world cup. Building a untouchable team is alot harder then you think bud. Give Italy time.

Del Piero could have changed it but he didn't and the game went on. Nobody ever says that Italy was in possesion of the ball with a minute or less to go, still 1-0. So, if Italy (Totti if I remember well) would have managed the last paly more wisely instead of what they actually did, they could have easily won the Cup regardless of these two missed chances by Del Piero.

He has scored from similar positions many times. As much as I like him, it looks like he did not have the mentality to deliver at consistently at the highest stage. His performances at the 98 world cup were abysmal as well. Goal in 2006 semifinal did not change anything, the game was over.

@@lorenzor124 I was a big Del Piero fan in late 90s and 2000s but looking back I realize that he was a very talented choker. Could not deliver anything for Juventus at the Champions league despite playing alongside Zidane, Inzaghi, Nedved and many other stars. Performances at World Cup and Euro are either abysmal or nothing to brag about. Basically, he was always fading away at the highest stage. Baggio performed much better despite multiple injuries and dislike from coaches. The only other guy to consistently perform for Italy was Cristian Vieri.

For the rest he always had to play as a substitute in a different Role, yet he delivered goals and assists, also in world cups. Could not deliver anything for Juventus at the Champions league despite playing alongside Zidane, Inzaghi, Nedved and many other stars. Performances at World Cup and Euro are either abysmal or nothing to brag about. Basically, he was always fading away at the highest stage. Baggio performed much better despite multiple injuries and dislike from coaches. The only other guy to consistently perform for Italy was Cristian Vieri.
