    My favourite implementation of character switching in real time is the Conflict series. Controlling or ordering the 4 squad members was smooth and tactical feeling, it was also fun controlling 2 soldiers each in split screen co-op

  • @SuperiorPosterior
    @SuperiorPosterior ปีที่แล้ว +10

    3:36 Dark Cloud 2 had a fairly decent character switching setup, in 2002. Press L3 to switch between your two characters (Max and Monica), and press R3 to switch to their alternate forms-a monster transformation for Monica, and the mini mech Ridepod for Max. Its only problem was that you _had_ to be Max/Monica to swap between characters, not the Ridepod/Monster form.

    • @Razmoudah
      @Razmoudah ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was debating mentioning this, and even the Mana franchise (I gotta stop calling it Seiken Densetsu now) and Secret of Evermore as they also allowed you to swap your controlled character on the fly. However, despite being unfamiliar with Grand Theft Auto in general (much less a specific title) I will give it props for the fact that the other characters appear to actually be doing things within the game world when they aren't being controlled and/or directly aiding the character the player is controlling (at least, that's the impression I got from the video snippet). That was at least something new.

    • @KuueenKumi
      @KuueenKumi ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RazmoudahI mean, the other characters in V really weren't doing much from an RPG or character progression sort of way, just an ambient, depth providing sort of action that made the world look lived in and the characters look like they had lives. Though, swapping to Trevor might land you in a cop chase, so that's actually a bit involved

    • @Razmoudah
      @Razmoudah ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KuueenKumi That's still more than any of the Action RPGs I've played that had the ability to swap controlled characters on the fly.

    Character switch in GTA was interesting because they're not always where you left them, so they went and had a life while you played as the other character. Trevor had the funniest switches

    • @tubensalat1453
      @tubensalat1453 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm in "overtime" in GTA V (again), casually finishing up some stuff and the last time I switched to Trevor he was in hot pursuit with the cops; not very casual. I hated it though when in my first play through he spawned at a beach and one of his places was robbed: there was just no vehicle around! That - and all those robberies in general - made me kind of weary to purchase businesses.

    I think Bullet Time from the Max Payne games should get an honourable mention. It wasn't the first to invent it, but it popularised it so much that every action shooter (especially Call of Duty) replicated it by giving a slow-mo section somewhere in their games.
    Still, I loved the list. Good work as usual, Falcon.

    • @MinorZero
      @MinorZero ปีที่แล้ว

      The fact it is called bullet time is from that game. But similar to that, Dishonored's blink would also qualify that way.

    About boss weapons and unique weapons both having special abilities in FromSoftware games, it has been a big thing since King's Field back in the playstation 1 era.
    The thing that was new here is not those special abilities for special weapons. The new thing is normal weapons having special abilities (even if less special ones than for special weapons), and this led to being able to switch those normal weapon abilities in Elden Ring (and the special weapons cannot have their abilities switched).

    Technically speaking, the 1st Ratchet & Clank on PS2 did have strafing. But it's only after getting the thrusterpack upgrade for Clank. But even them, it's NOT ideal, when compared to how strafing works in the rest of the series. Still, a very smart move on Insomniac's part for evolving the series to where it is today!

    Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3, I think, was more revolutionary when it added reverts. That meant you not only could extend grinds, but send combos into the air as well.

    • @Hawk_of_Battle

      Those wouldn't have been possible without manuals to combo into though, so the manual is still more important there.

    Grapnel boost in Arkham City. Granted, there would be no use for it in Asylum because of how small and narrow the game's environments are, but it became a staple in the series after that, and the key to traversing the map effectively.

    I really think the addition of a mount in the Souls series is also something that changed the game and will probably change the series. Elden Ring wanted to be big and the mount allowed that game to reach as far as it could. It was also done in the perfect way of using an item so you can do it with a lot of ease as well as intentional, not really a big fan of a dedicated button like R3.

    • @eldenarmortem975
      @eldenarmortem975 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope it wont change anything, while the game was good with best combat in series, the open world suck, it is dead and boring, having huge open world without towns and villages and some events is meh. I had lot of fun experiencing it the 1st time, tho closer to end i was fed up with it, but replaying, even year later, it s too borring. Atleast they should ve made the game smaller, so they wouldn t have to reuse bosses. Some would say rush the legacy dungeons and take only what you need for build, but that doesn t sit well with me, others would say, you played 140hours 1st run the game is not meant to be replayed, The others are probably right, but some nice toys are unlocked by the end and it is shame not having fun using them. TLDR: Open world is meh, i hope for non linear interconnected world next.

    With Metal Gear Solid, Snake said in 4 that Big Boss trained him in CQC, but he stopped using it after learning who Big Boss really is.
    CQC gained a resurgence in 4. Snake says that everybody learned by reading about it, but he learned by doing. He says that when people come at him with their cookie cutter version of CQC, his body just reacts and that's why he uses it now.
    It's not the best explanation of why he doesn't use it, but all in all, it's the best they could have done.

    Takedowns in Halo Reach! We all had a blast in the Beta with those and it proved arguably even MORE popular when the game was released! Really, it's jus so satisfying, sneaking up on an enemy and getting that takedown animation, they're different each time too, so you never really get too much repetition! Although, Dual-Wielding was probably ever bigger... or rather jus one massive mistake! I jus wreaked so much havoc in Halo 3 Multiplayer with the Dual Spikers... I agree with all of these except from the bonus. Ratchet and Clank 1 did have a strafing mechanic however you had to unlock the thrusterpack first. If you double crouched the thrusterpack would then float you above the floor and shoot in the direction the camera was facing in, but you could move in whichever direction you liked. I know its not the same as the later games (2 onwards) but its still technically strafing, even if it was locked behind something you had to pay for during the game itself.

    When I played the crash mode for the first time, I stopped playing the rest of the game all together for quite a while lol. The crash mode was just so much fun.

    15:51 Pretty sure he was meant to be pink, but there was a bit of a dispute between Sakurai and Miyamoto on whether Kirby should be Pink or Yellow, so since they couldn't decide at the time, they just made Kirby white on the box art, but Sakurai ended up winnin the debate. Could be wrong, though.

    Not really an ability but the ping feature of League of Legends were ahead of its time. They first introduced contextual pings then Apex implemented it in an FPS environment which also was well done

    That was a great impression of Solid Snake, i could see Snake having a convo with a Falcon out in the wilds while on a mission

    Its still amazing to me how copy abilities were not from the original game. They have became so iconic that the idea of kirby game without some sort of a version of them feels almost unthinkable.

    Personally, I would say Guns For Hire is the best mechanism in Far Cry . You can wipe out and outpost in under a minute

    My personal favorite is Kindom Hearts 2's Forms. It vastly changed how the game was played and added so much depth to combat. It was included in nearly every KH game since then, whether as Styles of Keyblade Transformations.

    I really want a remake of the original DMC with style switching and plays similar to DMC5, get rid of the swimming parts and rework some of the weapons. Also it should open with the player controlling Vergil fighting his way to Mundus and then obviously failing against him. Then it continues with the events of the original and when you finish the story, you unlock the ability to play the whole story as Vergil

    Speaking of strafing, I remember in the instruction manual for Transformers 2004 on PS2 (remember instruction manuals?) in the controls section, they actually point out that you can strafe in the game. I was too young to realize that that must have been a new development in games, so I just thought it was weird for them to point it out. I was like "yeah, obviously I can walk sideways, duh."

    I'm pretty sure Burnout 2 introduced crash mode. Burnout 3 is better known for the takedowns during standard races, which are pretty awesome by the way.
