Yeah. I'm also a Spanish speaker and sometimes I struggle when talking about anime with my English speaking friends... Mostly because the Latin version resembles more the Japanese pronunciation (and I only watch anime in Japanese), so to push it further away from Japanese so it sounds closer to the English phonetical adaptation of the name is weird...
Isn’t it beautiful that June, the name of the magazine, means pure in Japanese, and that pride month is also June? And my birthday, not that anybody asked.
I was at church camp this summer and was debating I should read BL (it was 'That Awkward Magic' and 'My Weird Roomate' on Webtoon if you're curious), and I ended up reading it in front of tons of Christians hehe... he.... at least they didn't see...
you should read mo dao zu shi, it's a chinese bl novel but it's translated to english on the exiled rebels scanlations website, it's like action-romance and it's SO good
Exactly, man. I’m tired of looking at what yuri is always viewed from qeer woman’s pov and the male yuri fans’s pov, but BL is exclusively portrayed as a homoerotic fanservice with hot handsome boys for yaoi fangirls. Similarly, you will be killed if you say that yuri is intended to be a hot fetish for heterosexual men, but for some reason it is perfectly normal to say that yaoi is created solely to satisfy the desire of heterosexual girls.
Absolutely! I spent so long with the 'problematic' early BL works she talked about in this video because I just could not find anything more plot-heavy or real-life accurate. I'd love to see a video on bara just to hear about more titles I should look into.
@@86fifty i think because of the content there's very little bara anime or even longer manga.. they're like hustler magazine to the "i read it for the articles" playboy magazines of the day. @@isnotmimi From people who use it in a derogatory manner. Like she said in the video, the word originates from within a community and was then used as an insult by outsiders. Thank you for this nuanced look at BL, it's also important to keep in mind, I think, the role of BL in promoting and driving LGBTQ+ acceptance in East Asia like in the academic study by Jungmin Kwon about South Koreans.
I'm so glad you guys covered this! Yaoi had been a huge part of my discovering I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, in many good and bad ways. I went from worshipping yaoi as a 'straight girl' to appreciating yaoi, but also understanding it's toxic elements and often poor representation as a nonbinary gay viewer. I might not have looked more closely at my own sexuality or at the nature of queer representation, the pushback I get for these interests, or how gender roles and sexuality are treated by different cultures if I hadn't read my first inuyasha/koga doujinshi when I was barely a preteen. If I'd not encountered yaoi, slash, Yuri, or any form of same sex fandom, I probably wouldn't know enough now to look back and see how far we've come and how far we have yet to go. Yaoi and Yuri really started my path of critical thinking, questioning gender norms and homophobia, despite the stigma held for yaoi fans(which is definitely motivated by sexism and homophobia, proof being that you see the same disregard and disgust pointed at fan girls in the west who ship guys with guys) I definitely look forward to seeing you cover Yuri and maybe you could get a few LGBT fans perspective on animes handling of LGBT characters? There's a ton to unpack with just Yuri on Ice, Sailor Moon, and even in My Hero Academy. Anime has definitely had an impact on a generation of queer people, both in content and at conventions/fan spaces.
I would absolutely love a follow up video on why bara style and portrayal stayed within the confines of manga (of course discounting the +18 work who couldn't be adapted to mainstream audiences for ehm obvious reasons)

Please make a video on CLAMP! And, omg, first time I see this girl and I already freaking adore her! As for me, I think that yuri on ice may have been the start of my journey.
19:19 I know I'm late to the party but THANK YOU for adding one of my all-time favorite manga "The Carp on the Chopping Block Jumps Twice". It's heavy, it's heartbreaking but it's also unconventional and very realistic, and that's why I love it. So thank you for giving it a shout out, I really appreciate it. Also the video is really nice and informative, great work!
Answering the Robot: Gravitation was definitely the series that got me to go down the rabbit hole! From CLAMP, the Fushigi Yugi characters Chichiro and Tasuki (the dynamic duo) was often paired in very rare doujinshi and difficult to find (at the dawn of the internet age)- fanfiction. So its interesting to see how far this gendra has come since the 90s!
00:49 I don't know Cristal, I think your Midoriya pronunciation is fine. We latinos can generally pronounce Japanese better than the average English-speaking person, so, yeah~
I really hope you do a video on yuri/shoujo-ai! I love BL/yaoi/shonen-ai, but I'm more into yuri/shoujo-ai! I wish there was more of a presence of the girl x girl dynamic in anime, and the anime community. I love boy x boy content, but my heart gravitates more towards the girl x girl content. I wish there was a yuri con or something...
Gravitation will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first actual yaoi anime i ever watched (i watched it on youtube lol) cause up until then all id seen was fanfiction doujinshis and fanart so to see a canon gay relationship was very refreshing
One of the huge reasons I have a bunch on internalized homophobia, is because of how fujos treated me online when I was younger. When they try to label you the top or bottom, it can really make you uncomfy So yeah, thanks fujos on amino.
If it weren't for copyright strike bots, addressing the most famous western yaoi couple, Tweek and Craig from South Park, would've been amusing. As a guy with zero interest in the subject matter, I love how in depth you all go into the history of these topics.
As a male yaoi reader I always hated the seme uke tropes and lacking stories, I just wanted normal slice of life style stories about friends and work and life and a little romance sprinkled in.. although perhaps Japan is not exactly the country to look to for that...
@@GetInTheRobot- Wait, what? No! Your deep dives are always genuinely great, and this one was even better than usual. I got nothin' but love for my anime explainer. 💜✌💜
Hey, I'm a librarian and former English professor, and I just need to let you know how incredible this channel is. I'm perennially thinking about getting back into anime, and the exhaustiveness, thoughtfulness, and sheer optimism of this channel are such great encouragement. I'm sure this is all a ton of work and frustration to put together, especially with YoyTube's dumb demonetization policies, but I really think you all make some of the best pop culture content out there, and I'm really grateful for it. This channel is a joy.
Ppl really like saying they hate fujoshis but like... I keep explaining its legit a term that means they like yaoi. It doesn’t mean u fetishize gay ppl. Also god I’m glad you pointed out that double standard.
are you asexual and aromantic or asexual but into romance? Because i would totally recommend What Did You Eat Yesterday? as a great title that has nothing to do with the explicit stuff, heck its not even so much romantic stuff either. It’s a slice of life but it deals with the gender politics of Japan. It has a Live Action going right now! Very good!
Surprisingly detailed and entertaining to watch! You truly are a woman of culture Have you make a Yuri video yet? I'm gonna browse the channel but if you haven't already then I'm looking forward to it, I'm not against BL/Yaoi and in fact I have few that I enjoyed but I'm more into Yuri or Shoujoai and I'm glad that we have more Yuri/BL in mainstream manga/anime now, vanilla just doesn't excite me as much
I'd love a video about yuri, it's a great genre and although it doesn't have the same traction as yaoi (from what I know, at least), I think's really important in anime/manga culture.
@Poisonous Nightcore Oh, I know it, but I haven't watched it yet. I recommend you a great short yuri manga called Maka-maka, it's yuri/smut/seinen. Tell me when you finish it!
Can we continue the conversation on this? Can GITR compare and contrast yaoi/BL and yuri/GL? That would be really cool. And if you guys could talk about the history of bara as well and compare and contrast that to yaoi, maybe see if there’s a female equivalent of bara out there, idk. I also think that it would be really cool if GITR could talk about how the anime fandom reacts to yaoi/BL and yuri/GL.
I honestly really appreciate yaoi. It exposed me to so much information I feel I never would have gotten though other means at the time. When I first found it it was trough love stage which I didn't know was a yaoi. I had a mild distaste for yaoi despite having no involvement prior and honestly that came from me having NO KNOWLEDGE of gay male relationships (or female) and I just thought it was kinda weird and sure ok... But it's not natural cause reproduction Yada Yada. (I was like 10) But honestly love stage was a huge eye opener to me as like.... A gateway and It just opened up a whole thing and gave me positive emotions related to the whole other people being gay thing. Also abt consent and relationship in some of those mangas because As a tomboy I avoided romance like the plague (my ideas were a little warped when I was younger but as I figured out the good from the bad manga and explored into other relationship based media. it was improved.) I feel like it Exposed me to stuff before I could see it in only a negative light through the mainstream media like crossdressing and mild bdsm. Idk I just feel it was one of the biggest shapers of my like "sexuality" (lmao sounds kinda gross but I feel much better for knowing about it earlier than later) and sexual knowledge (which of corse I expanded I didn't only learn from yaoi that wouldn't be good.) it literally taught me how sex worked like wtf. (I know with guys it's different it just gave me the extra steps before "and then babies "). I mean there is some stuff out there that really isn't positive and I can't say that this would be a good experience for other 10yr olds by ANY means but I really wanna emphasise that. I just really feel it was an important part of my history and still influences me. (Random yaoi/fujoshi tid bits skip if you want it's just random related stuff -I hate the ciel X Sebastian pairing I've always felt it was unnatural and didn't apply to their actual personalities and dynamics and I refused to consume media like that. But I shipped ereri so like who the heck am I to judge. -koisuru boukun was the first piece of media to make me cry god that stuff got to me an I related so hard to Souichi I'm not even kidding even tho he's an ass and 10/10 has some non consent stuff. It was mostly the not quite wanting to understand his feelings and so just denying them but giving in. - I 👏 hate 👏 all 👏but 👏 very 👏 specific 👏 omegaverse 👏 stories. Either the alpha's are overly aggressive and cave way too easy and do the bad. Or the omega's are bitchy or whimpy. OR LIKE JUST BEASTIALITY DEPENDING ON WHICH OMEGAVERSE NO THANKS. But there are some ones I really appreciate as being good despite how easy it it to make it trash. S/o to sayounara alpha. For actually having no non/semi consensual encounters yaaaaaaaaaay :D (if you complain about the age gap I'm gonna shove a remote controller up your ass please let me enjoy my media) -oyaji yaoi (like with older men) is amazing and I need more I wish so bad there was more popularity with either, more mature relationships or age gaps. NAONO BOHRA I LOVE U. -trashy yaoi is like really funny. Pointy Chins and yaoi hands huge d or really wack stories just make me crack every time . Any way whatever just stuff glad it's getting more coverage, good and bad. )

"Girls at the age of 16-20"

Me: laughs at the age of 13
I started yaoi when I was 10
*Laughs in 8*
just realized i started watching and reading yaoi and bara too early lol
@@ryosumnezu excuse me what
You guys should do a video on banana fish!! 😀
@ohdespair people will suffer
I finished it recently and I'm NOT okay
7:13. YOUR AN ARMY TOO?
You see, I stumbled upon this channel which looking for some more bls and I didnt know if I should subscribe. Besides the fact that your personality is like a gold mine and I love it, you being an army or even just being a fan makes my decision a whole lot easier.
I.M who I aM .... shhhh V is my bias shhhh
Two words: BANANA FISH
Yes! I'm surprised she didn't mention banana fish!
@@greyblueme9711 Yeas, since it's the root where an Shoujo manga portraits a male'n'male couple. Full circle.
Ohh.. That's because it's not yaoi, nor shounen ai.
@@psqcho4347 but it impacted the genre a lot. Don't you know how many BL's we have now that have been inspired by Banana fish?
The love between Eiji and Ash changed a lot of people's perspectives because of their vanilla/sweet relationship and birthed a lot of Fu-joshi/danshi's
Also, the first ever BL mentioned in the video, was a shoujo so
"The man behind Ace Attorney..."
Me~ *gasps* Oh yes..
I'm ace as heck, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy hypothetical situations between someone else 😋💕
I'm also Ace
im a fudanshi solely because i'm comfortable with my own sexuality, and i'm happy to see a relationship flourish regardless of their preference.
Can we just get more Cristsal Marie? She's a great host and I always love the way she presents her video topics.
I never comment, but... YES, DO A CLAMP VIDEO
Dude you are super cute oh my gosh! Your glasses and hair and you’re face! And your awkward yet super cool personality shining through all that! So pretty and adorable! You did a great job covering this topic :)
Straight BL fan here
I am never ashamed
You shouldn’t be either
Thank you.
Asexual yaoi and yuri fan myself thanks for giving me the courage to say that
Yuri fan here.
I'm gay. :V
I mean... i like yaoi too.
Dayo Ade Well! Now that matter is out of the way. Solve the other boy love issue in Evangelion. Too many shipping wars on that.
you do you, I'll do jane
Please make a video on CLAMP! And, omg, first time I see this girl and I already freaking adore her! As for me, I think that yuri on ice may have been the start of my journey.
19:19 I know I'm late to the party but THANK YOU for adding one of my all-time favorite manga "The Carp on the Chopping Block Jumps Twice". It's heavy, it's heartbreaking but it's also unconventional and very realistic, and that's why I love it. So thank you for giving it a shout out, I really appreciate it.
Also the video is really nice and informative, great work!
Please do a video on CLAMP. Please. I need that in my life.
Especially about that Jojo doujin
Answering the Robot: Gravitation was definitely the series that got me to go down the rabbit hole! From CLAMP, the Fushigi Yugi characters Chichiro and Tasuki (the dynamic duo) was often paired in very rare doujinshi and difficult to find (at the dawn of the internet age)- fanfiction. So its interesting to see how far this gendra has come since the 90s!
Do a Clamp video!!! They're clebrating the 30th anniversary of their first professional manga RG Veda this year. So perfect timing!
you caught me off guard with the USUK DAMN !!!
Hi, bisexual yaoi lover here oof
"should we do a video on CLAMP?"
yes. yes that would be good.
00:49
I don't know Cristal, I think your Midoriya pronunciation is fine. We latinos can generally pronounce Japanese better than the average English-speaking person, so, yeah~
Lugh Ildanach and yet..... ppl still come at me lol but hey! Water under the bridge cause in the end its all about the anime loveee 💜💜💜
@@CristalMarie Agreed! Funny thing is if you hear, for example, All-Might calling Deku, he'll say "Midoriya" as you would read it in Spanish.
Lugh Ildanach i knowwwwwwww
I really hope you do a video on yuri/shoujo-ai! I love BL/yaoi/shonen-ai, but I'm more into yuri/shoujo-ai! I wish there was more of a presence of the girl x girl dynamic in anime, and the anime community. I love boy x boy content, but my heart gravitates more towards the girl x girl content. I wish there was a yuri con or something...
There is (was?) a Yuricon, here in the States at least. It's been running for almost 20yrs, founded by a friend of mine. Just google "yuricon"
Please do a Clamp breakdown please! I would love to see you cover their history.
"The Makoto to your Haru"

Edit: What's your OTP?

Rin x Haru for life
Gravitation will always have a special place in my heart because it was the first actual yaoi anime i ever watched (i watched it on youtube lol) cause up until then all id seen was fanfiction doujinshis and fanart so to see a canon gay relationship was very refreshing
CLAMP video yes please my childhood
One of the huge reasons I have a bunch on internalized homophobia, is because of how fujos treated me online when I was younger. When they try to label you the top or bottom, it can really make you uncomfy
So yeah, thanks fujos on amino.
So... some guys say that they dont like BL and also said that it is slowly destroying the anime community?
We girls also need our manservice.
it's just destroying their brains, but they have fragile brains
Do one on bara since pride is month is coming up! Lets celebrate lgbt writers and culture!
I mean people have said this already but
YES, A VIDEO ON CLAMP WOULD BE AWESOME!
honestly I'm just looking for ANY sorts of mentions of Kaze to Ki no Uta so thank you for this lol
If it weren't for copyright strike bots, addressing the most famous western yaoi couple, Tweek and Craig from South Park, would've been amusing. As a guy with zero interest in the subject matter, I love how in depth you all go into the history of these topics.
you mean Tweek and Craig? CREEK SHIPPPPPPP
@@kostan9844 I do, thank you for the correction.
As a male yaoi reader I always hated the seme uke tropes and lacking stories, I just wanted normal slice of life style stories about friends and work and life and a little romance sprinkled in.. although perhaps Japan is not exactly the country to look to for that...
Clamp!!!! That would be awesome to watch! Love their work.
"What did you eat yesterday?" looks like something I would like to read. And maybe even watch the tv drama. Looks... serious.
Lydia Hanger its super silly, and very heartfelt.
Still waiting for an English release of Kaze to Ki no Uta... ;-;
I'd love to see videos on Yuri and CLAMP!
This was a fantastic deep dive, even by this channel's lofty standards! Excellent work. And yes please on that CLAMP video.
Can’t tell if this is a backhanded compliment, but thanks! Haha.
Am I the only one who stared laughing when the Hetalia ship appeared?
That thing she did in the beginning is what I have to say to myself any time I read BL, MxB BxB MxM, etc.
Guess who's binging a bunch of new shows the whole summer
"I'm proud of that, actually"
As you should be.
this was so much more in-depth than I expected. 11/10.
Also: bara episode when?
Ppl really like saying they hate fujoshis but like... I keep explaining its legit a term that means they like yaoi. It doesn’t mean u fetishize gay ppl. Also god I’m glad you pointed out that double standard.
Screamin Berries yup, it’s a huge problem
Max Jones there’s a lot to unpack for sure.
Max Jones also that fits the description of most hentai which makes one wonder...
Max Jones some yaoi is straight up hentai and marketed as such.
Max Jones lol, Yami no Matsuei... wow, throwback. I recommend Yuri On Ice or Banana Fish as a more updated take on the genre.
I'm asexual so I never really got the appeal of BL or Yaoi. Also, yes! Cover CLAMP!
Aces unite. Separately. Of course. I like to skip those chapters or abandon entire series over anything explicit.
are you asexual and aromantic or asexual but into romance? Because i would totally recommend What Did You Eat Yesterday? as a great title that has nothing to do with the explicit stuff, heck its not even so much romantic stuff either. It’s a slice of life but it deals with the gender politics of Japan. It has a Live Action going right now! Very good!
Awesome video~ :D
18:18 Bakugo and Kirishima best bros in MHA! >w
The first anime movie and its explicit uh... fun timessssss yeah was released in 1969 🤔

Surprisingly detailed and entertaining to watch! You truly are a woman of culture
Have you make a Yuri video yet? I'm gonna browse the channel but if you haven't already then I'm looking forward to it, I'm not against BL/Yaoi and in fact I have few that I enjoyed but I'm more into Yuri or Shoujoai and I'm glad that we have more Yuri/BL in mainstream manga/anime now, vanilla just doesn't excite me as much
"Should we make a video about CLAMP?"
YES
I'd love a video about yuri, it's a great genre and although it doesn't have the same traction as yaoi (from what I know, at least), I think's really important in anime/manga culture.
@Poisonous Nightcore Oh, I know it, but I haven't watched it yet. I recommend you a great short yuri manga called Maka-maka, it's yuri/smut/seinen. Tell me when you finish it!
Please do a video on the history of Clamp lol. As a non-het guy this was one of my favorite vids in ages.
I love Under Grand Hotel. Such a classic. Swordfish, lol. I had a bit of an initial challenge due to that name. I found it jarringly hilarious.
Love this!
Yes, please do a CLAMP video :)
Also, I'm saddened by the fact that TH-cam demonetize videos if they talk too much about "sex" ...
Oh GOODNESS Under Grand Hotel. What a wild, wild ride.
Yes!!! A CLAMP episode would be amazing!
When she said BTS I choked in Korean
Haha
(Random yaoi/fujoshi tid bits skip if you want it's just random related stuff
-I hate the ciel X Sebastian pairing I've always felt it was unnatural and didn't apply to their actual personalities and dynamics and I refused to consume media like that.
For actually having no non/semi consensual encounters yaaaaaaaaaay :D (if you complain about the age gap I'm gonna shove a remote controller up your ass please let me enjoy my media)
-oyaji yaoi (like with older men) is amazing and I need more I wish so bad there was more popularity with either, more mature relationships or age gaps. NAONO BOHRA I LOVE U.
-trashy yaoi is like really funny. Pointy Chins and yaoi hands huge d or really wack stories just make me crack every time .
Any way whatever just stuff glad it's getting more coverage, good and bad. )
