@@Daigon95 The whole point of that episode was the reveal that Lily was a "boy" and the shock of discovering that she was going through masculine puberty is what killed her. That cousin stuff in SM didn't fool me when I was little. I knew they were together and figured they weren't actually related, but I couldn't figure out why the eng dub would lie to me haha
Because cousin-lovin is more acceptable in some circles than lady-lovin. 'Murica! (And yeah, that BS applies in "cosmopolitan" coastal cities as much as any rural areas.)
Its interesting just how often obvious subtextual hints are thrown in that they are in a romantic relationship... small things like an interest in holding hands, shy exchanged glances, clothing purchases for a partner, jacket lending, and such... it's enough that a total aro-ace like me thinks its obvious (that it's way more than just platonic best friends, as I would normally ascribe to to dude friends in a shounen show). I wonder why it is that a big name shoujo manga of the '90s like Sailor Moon could feature leads who were lesbian, but why Shounen Jump won't let a pair of male leads to be out. I suppose you have the cultural context of Neptune & Mercury modeling the widely-accepted-but-taboo relationship seen in traditional Takarazuka musical theater, vs the more generally taboo relationship hinted at between Kirishima and Bakugou. Maybe as we approach the end of the story we'll get an indisputable canonical reveal.
@@BeastGuardian The sub voice actor for Bakugo openly said he thinks Kirishima is the one for him so I realllllllly think there is a chance. And taking BNHA Smash into consideration and that they og author did have a hand in writing some of it and has acknowledged it, the only reason I find for them to not have a big reveal at least on the end of Kirishima's sexuality is to avoid reactionaries getting upset, but being just revealing enough so that people who are paying close attention can see whats going on.

So, I just finished rewatching Ouran High School Host Club, and while it still means a lot to me in how it shaped MY bi-dentity as a teen, it.. really hasn't aged well in some respects? I love Haruhi's dad for being canonically out as bi, but in both the dub and the sub that I found, both him and other characters use the word "t****y" to refer to either his job as a drag performer, or some general form of genderfluidity. And while Benibara still makes me SWOON, at the end of the day she is still portrayed as the predatory lesbian villain, and not a character in her own right. I got my hands on the manga though, which is a lot more explicit - while in the anime Haruhi seems more indifferent about being a host, maybe finding it interesting, in the manga she seems excited about the prospect of being swooned over by girls, heavily hinting that she's not completely straight. Thanks for also reminding me to watch Revolutionary Girl Utena!
It's been a long time since I read (or watched) Ouran, but regarding Haruhi's dad, my understanding is that (A) they used a term that is more connected to his job than his sexuality, and (B) Japan has a very different relationship with all flavors of gender-transgressive expression (among men, at least). There are scholarly books and documentaries about what is considered acceptable as a profession, versus personal sexuality, versus public gender expression, versus socio-political rights. Haruhi's dad never gets quite enough exploration as a character to really get into any of it, and honestly, I don't know how much the author even knew (or was able to include) about it, but you can look it up if you're interested.
Mandisa W Hey, that is interesting! I always figured that they were never using t****y as a slur and more just a descriptive word, but it always seemed like an awkward choice for the English dub and sub. I’m hoping that the more I read the manga, the more will be explained, in true Shojo Beat style there are loads of notes in the boarders of the pages explaining the context of Japanese phrases, words, translations etc. Thanks for pointing that out, will definitely be doing some research!
@@tabpanter5750 A lot of the terms used about and among LGBT people in Japan are in flux, just like in the US. So it's not all that odd that the expressions used in Ouran - in either language - are out-of-sync with modern usage.
i can see how the story hasnt aged well and certain terms dont translate well, although i personally disagree about Benibara. i know the lobelia girls were presented as the villains, but in the comedy, it really seemed to me like they were just a similar group from another school, and i really liked that they werent just the host club but girls :p idk im probably overthinking it, i just really love those gals haha

It was quite strange. The people behind the localization were given the task of making it set in a generic USA town and to retarget the audience to boys ages 8-12. KidsWB was hoping for a new Pokemon phenomenon. I really do not understand why they felt the need to change the setting, as Digimon did quite well for Fox Kids without attempting to change the setting (deriving easy English nicknames from the kids' original japanese names). The push to make Syaoran Li a more equal main character, rather than focusing on Sakura as the lead, was a very confusing one, they ended up editing the original 70 episodes into a 39 episode series to try to match that requirement. The production companies involved feared that they would be attacked by conservatives if the show was too japanese or had anything that was vaguely homosexual and feared that they wouldn't sell enough toys to boys if it seemed like the show was just about a girl. Well, when it was first released, the religious and cultural conservatives attacked KidsWB because the Clow Cards looked too much like tarot cards ^^;. Maybe they shouldn't have worked so hard editing everything out...
When you hear that they said it was a lesbian relationship in sailor moon but technically Sailor Uranus identifies as being neither male or female in the original Japanese manga that the anime was based off of.
I have a gender non-conforming friend who identifies as a lesbian too, though... I'd say saying Sailor Uranus is in a lesbian relationship is as close as you can get, since the character is not real and can't say what they identify as...
Ouran high school host club! Is amazing, when it comes to LGBT+ representation, the main character literally states that they don’t care about gender as a whole and that a person is a person no matter what gender they are! Honestly haruhi made me be happy as the non binary person! Also the fact that all of the male characters found haruhi attractive even when she did look like a boy and even when they didn’t know she it a boy!

Pretty sure CLAMP's multiverse is canon. I never quite finished XXXHolic & Tsubasa, but once they linked the Clow stuff (including Cardcaptor Sakura) with the greater CLAMP Campus universe (X, Tokyo Babylon, CLAMP Campus, etc), that pretty much cinched it. Maybe mythological stuff like RG Veda and Shirahime are outside, but everything original connects in one way or another. (I think even Clover is supposed to be part of the "robotics" timeline with Chobits and that toyetic one with the battle-bot toys.) [Edit: Angelic Layer]
@@lovesoderpalm1555 Yup! They didn't do the mech designs in Geass (Sunrise, makers of Gundam, have plenty of in-house talent for that). I wish there was more transgender woman and men characters in anime and manga. The only manga I read that was close to having a transmen character as lead was called, damnit I forgot....... it but was good manga though. We need most transmen characters.
One good manga with a trans male character as one of the protagonists was called Ghost Tower-can’t remember the Japanese name atm-and I haven’t finished reading but it portrays multiple LGBT+ characters. There are a few questionable things including the way we find out about the main character being trans is through nudity (I know, it really annoyed me and kinda gave me dysphoria but) and is slightly sexualized by the covers, but other than that the actual content is pretty amazing
Try Ranma 1/2, author later went on to make Inuyasha. Male protagonist transforms into a girl by getting splashed with water. Situational comedy heavy, 90's shonen vibe. As to the nature of the "trans-ness", I'm sure it's up for debate.
@@ficklebar If someone asks for anime with trans representation and you give them an anime where A: the fact Ranma switches genders is something that's almost exclusively played for laughs and B: the trans-ness is "up for debate" maybe you shouldn't be reccommending that anime.

I feel like I should mention Princess Jellyfish. The male lead loves to dress in drag and feels completely normal and confident in it. The show also addresses self confidence and the animation is wonderful
Love Stage is the only one that I can add to the list that wasn’t previously mentioned. I kinda like it, but the, uh, I’ll just say it, assault-ey beginning of that relationship does hinder my enjoyment of the show somewhat.
I'm also kinda disappointed the blonde one with glasses turned out to just be a cis man that can pass for a girl really well as opposed to a trans woman.
I don't really agree with the representation the main couple gives. Granted I haven't seen/read it in a long time so I don't remember how their relationships changed and developed. Gotta give brownie points for the brother's relationship with the manager though because I honestly loved the two of them so much (it's canon in the manga and they have their own scenes but they were cut from the anime- i assume for time)
Like people have already said, Given has great lgbt rep. It portrays the relationships between the main cast beautifully and heartbreakingly well, and shows how one can heal after losing a loved one (which I feel is especially important considering one of the author’s inspirations for writing Given in the first place was Banana Fish, which... you know how that went. I’m still bitter) For an even more recent example though, I’d recommend looking into Hoshiai no Sora (Stars Align) which is looking to be a very promising anime for many reasons, one of the biggest being it recently revealing a male lgbt character right from episode 2 (out of 3 episodes so far!), having a crush over one of the other male characters - which was immediately understood and normalized by the main character, who treated it like any other person would treat a straight crush. There’s also very nice representation in the cast in general. There is recent controversy over the ED though which was a pretty bad move on the staff’s side but I’d advise you to look past that because the show is much more than that.
In one of the latest manga chaps, Kobayashi and Tohru have what is basically a date and in the end, she tells Tohru that she does quite in fact *like* her and well is shown that there is some attraction towards her as shes also blushing while she says that.
I remember I was watching Cardcaptor Sakura on vrv and I suddenly heard the English cut out and I look to the screen and I saw it was the scene where Sakura figured out Sharon's crush on yukito! So at least the vrv English version kept it!
The censorship in the American Sailor Moon bothered me so much, they even changed some of Haruka's lines to make it appear that she had a crush on Mamoru
I'm 50 seconds in and it's my favorite demonetized episode of GITR, thus far. I'm assuming it's demonitized. I'd like to ask for a video delving into why there's so much incestuous attractions in anime, but tbh I'm kind of burnt out on relationship based episodes for the moment.... plus there may not be a good explanation for it...
The quick answer would be that incest is not illegal in Japan (generally at least. Don’t know about specifics though). However, I think a lot of series prove that something not being illegal doesn’t mean that it is immoral. And, you can definitely see that there is a lot of hesitation when those relationships start to form. -Adrian
I think a lot of it has to do with POV from a young girl's perspective. It feels horribly wrong considering the actions of the man, but that's not the point - it's about wish fulfillment for young girls fantasizing about older men, which obviously can't be fulfilled IRL.
I love and hate the fact that you included the "did kakyoin lay an egg" manga Also I did not have a crush on Tuxedo mask, I was hardcore into Sailor Jupiter and Motoki
Oí Kobayashi loves her Tohru even formed a great family with her, its just as she said in her own words '' not used to being wanted, Thats never happened to her before'' wich is very sad...
What are your opinions on Love Stage? It was one of the first BL I watched and I think it did a good job of knowing boundaries (yaoi wise). After Ryouma did...certain indecent things to Izumi, they didn't just go, "Welp, I guess we're a lovey-dovey couple now.". Ryouma heavily apologized and Izumi told him that he didn't feel the same way feelings-wise, but they could still be friends. I'm not saying what Ryouma did was okay, but the show knew that. They let the characters develop a strong friendship which turned into more, later on, which for me, made everything more meaningful than most other yaoi anime. The show also had the subtle incorporation of Rei and Shougo's relationship. As cheesy as some people may think this show is, it will forever be in my Top 10.
so they preferred the characters be Incestuous before lesbian ... yikes.
Every other country's version of censorship made so much more sense than America's. They are still my OTP though (Sailor Neptune is my favorite sailor guardian).

FYI Im not being transphobic; im just trying to find out where this info was confirmed, of the character.
@@Daigon95 The whole point of that episode was the reveal that Lily was a "boy" and the shock of discovering that she was going through masculine puberty is what killed her. **Shows Kirishima and Bakugou.**
Lovely. I-I can't even say anything about this it's just amazing.

I didn't realize that was wrong until I was a teen and I heard what they actually were to each other from people who had watched the Japanese dub.
And it's a shame that Steven Universe and other cartoons are ALSO censored when it comes to LGBT+ action
It's fine you get the representation. But not everything should be about lgbtq. Anyways it's a cartoon for kids, we know how much kids absorbed from just seeing things.
Haruhi’s dad is an Okama if I recall. They entertain people just like hosts but they dress up as women. The term t****y doesn’t translate it well.

I’m still bitter)
For an even more recent example though, I’d recommend looking into Hoshiai no Sora (Stars Align) which is looking to be a very promising anime for many reasons, one of the biggest being it recently revealing a male lgbt character right from episode 2 (out of 3 episodes so far!), having a crush over one of the other male characters - which was immediately understood and normalized by the main character, who treated it like any other person would treat a straight crush. There’s also very nice representation in the cast in general. There is recent controversy over the ED though which was a pretty bad move on the staff’s side but I’d advise you to look past that because the show is much more than that.

@@namewithheld8115 I like the end theme.
The familial relationship between Sakura and Tomoyo is a bit complicated, but their mothers were cousins.
I can only recommend GIVEN as a BL anime.
I'm not sure whether it's targeted at LGBTIQ (there are several LGBT characters), but I like it.
I love how wholesome this video was
Thanks for mentioning Dragon Maid
I prefer every shonen ever. Clearly the undying love and tension is so obviously there it can't be argued against.
Thank you for mentioning Carole and Tuesday! LOVE that show!
It's almost the end of 2021 and I still miss you guys
I’m a very simple man. I see “Get In The Robot” uploaded a video, click, see Dorrie and smile.
I was thinking Ouran High School Host Club XD
"How could you forget.." Mizuki's straight forward affections toward kei in ef: a tale of memories?

I remember I was watching Cardcaptor Sakura on vrv and I suddenly heard the English cut out and I look to the screen and I saw it was the scene where Sakura figured out Sharon's crush on yukito! So at least the vrv English version kept it!
people are going to get angry at you for this, but thank you for this ❤️
English sailor moon be like:
*SWEET HOME ALABAMA*
This was a beautiful video to unwind with on a Friday night. Never considered how much my love of anime and my queerness might have in common
I love and hate the fact that you included the "did kakyoin lay an egg" manga
Also I did not have a crush on Tuxedo mask, I was hardcore into Sailor Jupiter and Motoki
Oí Kobayashi loves her Tohru even formed a great family with her, its just as she said in her own words '' not used to being wanted, Thats never happened to her before'' wich is very sad...
Do you think the anime will continue because of the whole you know
Akenaton Ghallard I never liked the show. It's perverted. Being perverted is not love, that's gross.
I declare this the cutest TH-cam channel ever
"CLAMP started out by making yaoi doujin"
Oh no
Did you lay this egg
Hello I'm straight but I really do enjoy the lgbt representation in media, I'm making some characters myself involved within that community.
