    Emerald Hill Info:
Emerald Hill is a neighbourhood and a conservation area located in the planning areas of Newton and Orchard in Singapore. Former home to many members of the city-state's wealthy Peranakan community, it is located near Orchard Road. Many of its homes feature Chinese Baroque architecture. Emerald Hill is also the setting for some of the short stories by the late Singaporean author Goh Sin Tub. Many of the homes were designed by Mr R T Rajoo (Rethinam Thamby Rajoo Pillay) an architect/contractor of those days who died in 1929 at his home in Tank Road, Singapore.
Before the time of Stamford Raffles and William Farquhar, Emerald Hill was believed to be fully covered in primary rainforest. However, around the early 1800s, many Chinese immigrants occupied the land with Gambier or pepper plantation to make a living of their own, exhausting the land to its ends.
By the turn of the twentieth century, the 13.2-hectare land and its three houses were the property of Seah Boon Kang and Seah Boon Kiat. In 1901, they subdivided the property into 38 plots, ten of which they kept while the remaining twenty-eight lots were sold to various people.
One of the persons who bought three lots (Lots 6, 7, 8), was an influential Peranakan named Lim Boon Keng. The builders of houses at Emerald Hill Road were mostly Peranakans or Straits-born Chinese in general; at least fifty-nine out of 112 houses were built in total. The first house in the area was built in 1902. By 1918, 33% of houses have been built.
During the Japanese Occupation, all the building of new houses stopped. After which, houses were continuously being erected until Emerald Hill Road was fully aligned by landed properties by 1950s.
For almost half a century, a community of Peranakans thrived in Emerald Hill Road. Lim Boon Keng and his family was the most prominent family amongst all Straits Chinese who lived on that hill. Most of the Peranakan family started moving out since the 1950s. Most of which, was because the head of the family at that time has already passed on, while other plots of lands were further developed to the present block of flats.
Emerald Hill has often been featured in Singaporean literature. Such titles include:
Emily of Emerald Hill (1983), by Stella Kon
The Nan-Mei-Su Girls of Emerald Hill (1989), by Goh Sin Tub
The Ghost Lover of Emerald Hill, by Goh Sin Tub
On This Emerald Hill, written by Jonathan Lim, directed by Christina Seargant
Rich People Problems, by Kevin Kwan in which the character of Astrid has a home in Emerald Hill. This is the 3rd book of the "Crazy Rich..." trilogy. The first book, "Crazy Rich Asians" was made into a movie.

Hi friends. This is Alan from Discovery Walking Tours TV and I hope you enjoy watching this video. I used binaural microphones to record the environmental sounds. So if you have a pair of headphones, do use them, it will be quite an immersive experience 😀
If you notice any interesting points in the video or want to ask about something that was caught on camera, comment with a time stamp (eg 00:01) and I will be sure to check it out. I am also interested to know where you are from 😄 so drop a comment below and say hi!
After watching, and if you are keen to see and hear more of Singapore, do check out my Singapore Walking Tours playlist below.

Lovely 😊 I am thinking of making a trip to Perth in mid August. I will be at Alice Spring for a road trip and was thinking of visiting another Australian city before heading back home. Having a 2 day stop over in Perth sounds like fun

Nicely shot and looks like a very good place for a walk 😃. Love the alley's from 9min on. On the whole Singapore seems very lush and green.

Glad to hear from you Thomas! Welcome to Singapore 🤣 Yeah the alleys are nice and quiet. It's a really picturesque area with lots of history. It's also a street that is unknown to most people. Our government puts green spaces in Singapore as a major priority and we are all very fortunate for that.

Thank you. Your videos have helped me to add some places to my go-to list, and this is one of them. Every time I visit Singapore, I find myself more and more amazed by the sheer scale of the work required to maintain all of the old buildings and monuments. It's quite a remarkable feat that so much of it remains on Emerald Hill (at arm's length from Orchard Road), though I strongly suspect that other areas with like architecture will not survive into the next century. Thanks again! 👍😊

I think Alan this is one of your best work yet. Reasons are.... your usual stable and this especially crisp video throughout. Basically you have the quality, to be optimized by interesting subject matter. Malls and crowds are way too common, and does not give you the feeling of a nice, relaxing and interesting walk. This video has elements like Peranakan uniqueness, clean and green surroundings. You nicely capped it with a slow careful climb up the stairs to ensure stability, and chose a very garden like spot above the hustle of Orchard Road which many might appreciate more from that distance. I know you want it quiet, but some light relevant music might help complement the videos. As urban as Singapore is, if you look harder there are greener and more natural spots. Of course Botanical Gardens and Chinatown are differently interesting.

Hi John. Very happy to see you and thanks for the feedback 😁 I hear you regarding the malls and the huge crowds. I can totally understand it not being everyone's idea of a pleasant walk 😂 Fortunately, I very much enjoy mixing it up with hordes of people. There is a certain amount of energy and vibe to a place when there are lots of people, and I enjoy being part of it. Nonetheless, I love a good solo outdoor walk once in awhile, and I will document as much as possible of life in Singapore (and hopefully the South East Asia region in time to come). Based on your feedback plus a couple of others, I am trying out a slightly different format of walking and I the first video will be out in a bit.
P.S Btw have you stayed or worked in Singapore before? You are really knowledgable about the locations around here. 😄

Wa! The most atas stretch on Orchard Road. The people who live there are like the most ah siah people in the world. Like no need to work kind.

Haha. I don't know if the "don't need to work" remark is accurate, but what I'm sure of is the valuation of the property is through the roof. Can see only, cannot touch 🤣

@@DiscoveryWalkingToursTV I know quite a few people who live there... really no need to work... cause the money is like inherited. I mean, they do go to 'work' but it's more for show... like no stress one. Anytime can quit or go on no pay leave... very different lives from us HDB dwellers...
