    Raffles Place Info:
    Raffles Place is the centre of the Financial District of Singapore and is located south of the mouth of the Singapore River. It was first planned and developed in the 1820s as Commercial Square to serve as the hub of the commercial zone of Singapore in Raffles Town Plan. It was renamed Raffles Place in 1858. It is now the site of a number of major banks and features some of the tallest buildings and landmarks of the country.
    Raffles Place is now dominated by Skyscrapers, some of the tallest buildings in Singapore, which are the locations of flagship banks. United Overseas Bank tower was completed in 1974 on the old Bonham Building site, later renovated and expanded into UOB Plaza. Other towers such as Singapore Land Tower, Clifford Centre, Ocean Building, OUB Centre, and Republic Plaza have also replaced the older buildings. The three tallest buildings in Singapore were located on Raffles Place until the construction of Tanjong Pagar Centre in 2016

    Hi friends. This is Alan from Discovery Walking Tours TV and I hope you enjoy watching this video. I used binaural microphones to record the environmental sounds. So if you have a pair of headphones, do use them, it will be quite an immersive experience 😀
    If you notice any interesting points in the video or want to ask about something that was caught on camera, comment with a time stamp (eg 00:01) and I will be sure to check it out. I am also interested to know where you are from 😄 so drop a comment below and say hi!
    After watching, and if you are keen to see and hear more of Singapore, do check out my Singapore Walking Tours playlist below.

    Dear Alan: We have thoroughly been enjoying your "Discovery Walking Tours" videos of Singapore. My lovely wife is from Singapore and after we got married we lived there for some 15 years, from the late 1960's to the mid 1980's. During that time, I was employed as a mechanical designer for an American company in the island nation's burgeoning electronics industry. Other work assignments took me to various parts of the sprawling Indonesian archipelago including Java. Borneo, Sumatra and the picturesque island of Bali, creating memories that will never be forgotten. Reflecting on your video collection, I am profoundly impressed with the quality of your work -- how you move the camera slowly and pan slowly to enhance the impact of your video presentation. We have been back to visit Singapore several times, the latest being in early 2016. With so many new things to see, such as the island-wide ultra-modern MRT system which is the essence of efficiency, along with the towering Marina Bay Sands Hotel, there is no shortage of fascinating things to see. Then there has been the old city with its world-famous Raffles Hotel, the birthplace of the "Singapore Sling" back in 1915, along with Emerald Street with its array of picturesque colonial-style homes which have been delightfully preserved to add a distinctive flavour to the ambiance to the teeming city. Now we make our home in Escondido, California, near San Diego with its warmth and sunshine and where it never snows.

      Glad to hear from you Vern. Its comments such as yours that provides me the motivation to continue documenting Singapore 😊 Hopefully things will start getting "better" in 2021 and you will be able to travel to Singapore again. Keep an eye out for Jewel Changi Airport and the Thompson-East Coast line. Half the line should be completed by the end of 2021

    From Changi Airport to Poyan Reservoir and everywhere in between, Singapore has the finest of landscapes. Meticulous arrangements of gardens and lush greenery. And every turn meets you with vibrant flowers in splendid colors..fuschias, reds, purples, optic whites, yellows... what a stunning City!!! And I love those iconic shophouses❤. Another eye-popping video.

      Thanks for sharing some memories Kerry. I also worked at Raffles Place a couple of years back. It's a fast pace of life with a strong sense of dynamism. I kind of miss working here. The money changers as usual are enjoying brisk business.

    Hi Bro,
    The footage at Raffles Place and Boat Quay looked so "fresh & cool" after the rain.
    Lots of ppl movement and all with hungry stomach, yerr!
    @ 12:08...thank you for walking into the Temple compound, where I used to frequent. Two main deities (facing in) on the left is "Macopo" & on the right is "Xuan Tian Shang Di."
    After retirement, I worked for awhile at a Law Firm at UOB Centre and at Fullerton Hotel so, I used to hang around Boat Quay area. At that time, those rain trees were still small.
    Thanks for this "enjoyable walk around" which brought back, lots of fond memories.

      As always, thanks for "giving life" to some of the buildings and structure by sharing your stories 😄 Will be interesting to see what the area will be like once the new development at the former Golden Shoe Carpark is completed

    I started watching Rambalac walking videos. I can see why you got your inspiration there. Very high quality videos with no distractions. Japan however has assets that Singapore does not in terms of making walking videos. A walk on Asakusa is very interesting with clean streets, cute and quaint shops, showcasing Japanese culture and architecture. Notice the nearby pretty statues, shrines, trees and water scenes versus Raffles Place. He has very much wider surrounding options that interest audience, now including me. Singapore does have unique areas of interest. Examples will be the Begawan Solo Bakery you captured, no where else you have that. Or MBS views or the place that features all Musang King durian specialties. Of course his Kyoto will be like you going to Johor. Bukit Timah will not cut it. Just some random thoughts for you, that might make your videos more interesting. Thanks for the effort again.

      I hear you. Asakusa and Japan as a whole gives off totally different vibes and different points of interest. Another one of the creators in the walking tours niche is "Prowalks", he does Italy videos and the location plays a huge part. There is soo much to see, and take in when you are walking in Italy. Thanks again John and hope to see you again in other video =D

    second half of video seems fuzzier. Improved in the last 10 minutes or so. Is Maxwell Food Court in this area?

    • @DiscoveryWalkingToursTV
      @DiscoveryWalkingToursTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maxwell food court is around 700 metres away from Market Street Interim Hawker Centre (last venue in the video). I would consider Maxwell within our CBD area but would be closer to Tanjong Pagar or Chinatown. The second half of the video is indeed fuzzier. Its due to me walking from a brightly lit area to sheltered and/or underground areas. The lack of ambient light will distort the image.

    Hi. I am from Australia and travelling to Singapore for the first time. I find your tours most helpful and interesting. Can i ask what time of day was this taken? All the food courts look very busy, are they always this busy?

    • @DiscoveryWalkingToursTV
      @DiscoveryWalkingToursTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Happy to hear from you Andrew 😄 This video was taken on a weekday at around 12pm. It's lunch break so the whole place comes alive with people working in the area. The food courts will be a lot quieter outside the window period of 12pm to 2pm.

      Telok Ayer St is closed to traffic 7pm onwards; @satay street" comes alive then

    • @DiscoveryWalkingToursTV
      @DiscoveryWalkingToursTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Kerry for sharing that. To give context, Lau Pa Sat or Trlok Ayer Market has a minor street that is closed off to traffic from the evenings. The street becomes a "satay road" with vendors selling satay till midnight. It's a tourist attraction so you can visit it to know more 😊

    Another well done walking video. Depending on your interest and focus, you might want to further optimize your videos to include interesting details that will get you a much wider audience. You have stable, high quality videos as I mentioned before. But Manaweblife in Malaysia has that, and uses that further in more detailed environments. For example, the guy can just do a 15 minute video without your walking effort on a popular roadside banana fritters store in KL, and get 30k views. In this particular video of yours, the CBD area might include say a Singapore gift store which you can expound on. Or we here in the USA might be curious as of what is inside Toast Box. Or a little snippet on what the Merlion gift is about. Or a little more close up on Clarke Quay. Please take this as constructive feedback. Of course many TH-camrs get hundreds of thousands of views just by talking about food hype, and controversial subjects. Two ladies just did one on Shake Shack at Jewel and got tons of views, but I don't think it is your thing.

      @DiscoveryWalkingToursTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear from you John! I sincerely appreciate the feedback and comments. It is from your sharing that allows me to understand what would be of interest to others. I can definitely aim for "important locations" within the locale and film more on those segments. Currently my video formats are inspired by this guy, rambalac, who has a huge following on Japan street walking. It was through his videos that made me want to document the walks that I do in my daily life. "Manaweblife" looks similar to "Gezen Adam" (who films in his local city of Istanbul), and is also a source of inspiration for me. Expanding to food-related videos on Singapore is definitely on the cards and it is something I hope I can explore further. Thanks again for the views John and I will always take it positively =D Happy to have you here on my journey
