- For a lot of Filipinos education is important. In fact it is so important that they will go to great lengths just to get to school...
I stayed over at my friends place in Mamabuaya, Cagayan de Oro, and proceeded to go on a morning trek down to the riverside in the neighbouring Brgy. Bayagna. What did I find there?
18 kids (ages 5-14) on their way to school...
This is a raw look at their journey...
Turns out none of the young kids have raincoats and none of the older kids have "payungs" (Umbrellas). Even if it rains they still take the epic journey to school and try to change into drier clothes after crossing the river.
Hearing this...
I spent all day today creating 18 "rain packs!" One for each kid!
What was in them:
A thick plastic to waterproof
A waterproof lunch box
A fresh big towel (to dry and change with)
Lots of little "baon" goodies
Mirror, Comb, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste (so the kids can look pogi for school... They were all bathing in the river when I first met them this morning)
The young kids now have rain coats. The older kids have payungs.
School kits for each kid (paper, pen, pencil, markers, sharpener)
100 peso for each kid to purchase whatever makes them happy
One day at a time, One school journey at a time... #BecomingFilipino

I closed my office to be alone to cry. It brought bittersweet memories. I started going to school at the age of 6. Together with my older siblings and neighbor kids, we have to cross a creek daily to get to school. It was no problem during dry months but dangerous after heavy rains. To cross it during these times, we have to look for a tree that leans over the creek for crossing. We have to rely on our instincts to avoid falling into the water with our little school package. We had no umbrellas, we used banana or elephant's ear leaves as the need arises. We were motivated to pursue education for we were made to believe by our parents that having it, is our guaranteed passport out of the predicament we have. Past forward, I am now a US citizen and in the process of acquiring dual citizenship. I made it a point to include in my balikbayan boxes some school supplies for our neighbor's children. I highly suggest for others who send boxes home to include these items for they do not occupy much space. My heartfelt thanks to you Kyle. I am so humbled by you for truly you have more space in your heart compared to many of us.

Willie Macawili I watched this video for the first time when Kyle had only about 37k subscribers. For the third time now I watched again and I come to tears whenever I read your comment remembering what we passed through when were kids. I am sure these children are much more prepared to face all the difficulties in life in dreaming and achieving better future. I am now living here in Europe (Switzerland, Italy) since 1984 and see to it that I helped somebody in my hometown whenever I could, in a little way I can.

This video really made me feel emotional....like what Kyle said in the video a lot of us complains a lot of things but these kids are struggling to get to school everyday, in which, the only means of transport crossing the river is a bamboo raft and it is dangerous and quite scary for these kids specially for younger ones and just imagine these children in the rainy season.....Kyle you're truly a blessing to these people and God really knows why HE sent you there....its only because He wants you to give them additional SMILE.....Godbless "Kulas"

thank you kulas for sharing this video, I hope that people out there especially government saw this video and do something to ease the burden these kids doing each day just to get to their school, this politicians always telling to people during their campaign season that education is the best gift to these children but see this situation those kids are, Do they need to sacrifice in that way just to get to school, maybe its ok during dry months but how about during wet season or months totally its a freaking dangerous to them, at the age of 5 this kids don't need to sacrifice that way, like what kulas say's its an eye opener so local gov't from that place please act and do something bring the school to them, thank you kulas again. take care always buddy may god always protect you bro.

Yes I hope that their conscience will bother them while they're eating delicious meal that came from the money of the people, my suggestion here is bring the school to their village, by the way I saw this video they need to walk few clicks from their house to the school, I came from a poor family too but I can see that I'm still blessed because of this video, I can feel their inequity to the society, please local government do something!!

Good to have Kulas in there. Kudos to the parents indeed! I knew Canadians are kind and courteous yet Kulas is something special. Money can be earned and spent. But spending it into those kids is something that hits them right through the soul that you will never be forgotten. I really wish the government could do something about this. The previous administration were just taking aids from rich countries and putting it in their own pockets. I hope and wish that this video will be seen in national TV in the Philippines where my Idol Duterte and his administration can do something about this. Like even a hanging bridge will do rather than taking a raft and climb to risk their lives. Or to relocate those people or relocate the school. The community there looks so few. Baranggay captain of that place (like a mayor in a village) please do your job and help or Kulas can be the next Baranggay captain of that place lol

Not all years are of sadness. These kids don't have to worry about their name brand clothes, designer kicks getting dirty. Western materialism and capitalism is not even a blink in their eyes. I believe them to be more blessed in life! I miss life back in the provinces of the Philippines. Time just moves so slow back home. You're not in a rush to just living the good life!

l had been following your adventure in my country for sometime now, and trough that I have seen how you've transformed yourself being a tourist to a native, and now to a humanitarian missionary. I salute you and envy you at the same time.I have done a bit of mission work, and hopefully at this age of 68, I'll still be able to go back home to the Philippines and do some more especially for the children.God bless you, Mr.Kyle and more power to you.
