- A row has erupted after a pupil at a Church of England school refused to accept her classmate could identify as a cat.
The 13-year-old student and her friend were reprimanded by their teacher at Rye College in East Sussex during a Year 8 Life Education class in which they rejected the idea people can change sex.
A secret recording of the exchange published on Twitter has been listened to 4.4 million times.
TalkTV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by founder and director of Transgender Trend, Stephanie Davies-Arai, to discuss the story.
She says: “Children are being taught in schools their feelings are the reality, and objective reality is not.”

I'm a retired teacher myself, and I can assure you Hartley-Brewer is correct. The teacher (and the Headteacher at this school) should be sacked. They do not possess sufficient knowledge and professional skills to carry out their duties effectively. The teacher has no business in any classroom, and the Headteacher has no business managing any school. Believe it or not, but this school received a favorable OFSTED rating. This should tell you all you need to know about the mess we now find ourselves in.
If you were starting today would you still be prepared to teach in most UK schools? The reason we have teachers and headteachers like this is that very few capable people would touch teaching in a UK state school with a 10ft barge pole. I've taught in New Zealand, Germany and Italy. They are all far better places to teach than the UK, and I'm sure others could add many more countries to the list.

Ranging for outright non stop brainwashing lessons where the supposed subject is barely discussed to the other end where you can see lecturers don’t agree with it but are very very carefully censoring themselves knowing their career are at the whims of fragile ego’s of the ideologies.

@@briantitchener4829 My experience of teachers, as a school kid, as a parent and as a school governor support your general assessment but probably 90% is harsh. I would put it at around 50%. There are some excellent teachers but many of them do it because of the long holidays and cushy pensions. They are OK bullying kids but wouldn't survive in the adult workplace. School as a pupil, then university and then back to school as a teacher. No expertise or knowledge outside of their little bubble.

When I was a kid my friends and I would run around the school yard neighing pretending we were horses. Imagination is part of being a kid. Once we were back in the classroom we were human kids again. What happens when kids are being told that they ARE what their imagination tells them they are? It’s cultivating mental illness.
My wife is a head teacher. So let me try to reassure. This kind of idiocy is present in a tiny tiny minority of teachers. My wife’s school, and she assures me, the vast majority of schools and teachers do not believe in or pander to this lunacy.

As a small child, I had what was called as an imagination....when playing by myself I used to pretend I was a horse, or a tiger, or a dragon, or indeed anything that had captured my imagination that day whether it be characters from books or films. I like to think I grew up ok, but I worry for my grandkids. Teachers like this are not fit for pupose.
