    A champagne cocktail, just like Victor Lazslo in Casablanca. Play La Marseillaise!
    Brandy is distilled wine. It was originally called "brandywine," which comes from an old Dutch word meaning "burnt wine." "Brandy" and "brand" come from a common origin, an old German word meaning "burn." That's how branding irons got their name. The word "brand" was eventually extended to mean not just a mark on a cow, but a trademark on something for sale. Now it means a product marketing name. So the word "brandy" has something in common with a brand name like Toyota.

    • @leviturner3265
      @leviturner3265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Around the time of Casablanca a champagne cocktail would not have had brandy in it. It was commonly just a sugar cube, with bitters, champagne, and a lemon twist. No brandy.

    Brandy is distilled from wine or fruit mash in the case of apricot brandy and similar products.
    So basically you can run any old or fresh wine through a still and the end product would be a brandy of some kind.

    • @leviturner3265
      @leviturner3265 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately most apricot brandy is not made from apricots. It is an apricot flavored liqueur with common brandy as the base. This is also true of most peach, blackberry, and cherry brandies. Apple brandy made from apples, on the other hand is much easier to find. There is Calvados which is an apple brandy from France, and in the states we have Laird's apple brandy.
      I do not distill personally. I do want a more natural apricot brandy though. So I take common brandy, and soak apricots in it for a week, or so. This creates something similar to the apricot brandy liqueur you can find at most stores.
      In a perfect world I would distill apricots to make a brandy then age it in oak, and let multiple varieties of apricots soak in this brandy, to get a complex well rounded apricot flavor, and I would sell it as a gourmet liqueur and also drink it personally.

    • @leviturner3265
      @leviturner3265 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wisconsin... Oh Wisconsin. Hopefully the brandy old fashioned is better than the old fashioned most of the rest of get throughout the rest of the states. I feel like the regular old fashioned has been changed into something more resembling a brandy old fashioned and it is caught in a weird place. Not being one or the other. I think that a regular old fashioned should just be 2 ounces of rye, one lump of sugar, 3-4 dashes of Angostura, ice, and a lemon peel. They are heavenly that way.
      I have never had a brandy old fashioned. The whiskey ones we get though are usually made with bourbon, seltzer I think, and a cherry... and like oranges... Anyways I need to give a brandy old fashioned a try. I also recommend trying an old fashioned old fashioned whenever the chance comes around, it is typically easier to just make them.

    Champagne cocktail plus brandy is called a French 75 and dates back to WW1. My go-to drink for the last several years is brandy & ginger ale -- the older I get, the less I demand of life.

    • @leviturner3265
      @leviturner3265 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A French 75 is actually a gin sour plus champagne. It is gin, lemon juice, sugar, and champagne with a lemon twist. A French 75 does not have bitters in it like champagne cocktail does, and has lemon juice that a champagne cocktail also does not have. Historically, a French 75 is always gin, not brandy. A French 75 is also the same as a gin fizz with champagne instead of seltzer.
      Curious about the brandy, and ginger ale I have never had that. I may need to give that a try. I also recommend trying gin and ginger ale, it is very nice. So is gin and Coca Cola. I much prefer it to whiskey, or rum and coke.

    I could be wrong, but I believe that that champagne cocktail is essentially a French .75, a delicious and fatal drink. It's named after a very powerful and deadly piece of artillery. The fruity garnish is pretty silly because the whole point of a French .75 is getting hammered while trying to look posh. You won't look posh while you're puking in an alley, but you'll definitely get hammered.

    The milk punch one is like a cold version of a drink I found in a cocktail book and is a favorite winter before bed drink.
    Heat 6-8 oz milk nice and hot
    Add 1-2 shots brandy
    honey to taste
    Top with nutmeg or cinnamon
    Also as a Wisconsinite, I must suggest the brandy old fashioned. It's one everyone does a little differently, but the basic recipe is a little bit of sugar (like a tsp) or maple syrup (use less than a tsp unless you like really really sweet) muddled with a cherry and orange slice and several splashes of Angostura bitters (although black walnut bitters with orange bitters is really nice). Add ice. Pour a couple shots of good brandy (or bourbon) over the ice, stir. Top with a splash of lemon-line soda (like Sprite or 7-Up) and garnish with a cherry and orange slice.

    The milk punch is very similar to a tom and Jerry cocktail which was a hot drink, usually served around Christmas as an alternative to eggnog. Brandy, rum, egg whites, sugar, milk and nutmeg. I know it was popular at least in the American Midwest up until 1970's. Almost unheard of now.

    Another great brandy cocktail is the tiki drink 'The Suffering Bastard'. Made with ginger beer. You shake a mix of 30ml gin, 30ml brandy, 15ml lime juice, 2 dashes of Angostura bitter, 5ml simple syrup, and some ice. Pour that over the ginger beer. Tastes mostly of ginger beer with subtle tones of the rest. You need a stong brandy and gin or it gets lost in the drink(not strong as in alcohol but in taste)

    At Mr. B's Bistro in the French Quarter in New Orleans, they make a super Brandy Milk Punch. The recipe is on their website. The secret is that they make theirs with a very good vanilla ice cream so forget the ice & egg whites. Whenever I go to New Orleans, I stop by Mr. B's for "Gumbo Ya Ya" & Brandy Milk Punches, not necessarily at the same time. Usually have the Brandy Milk Punch like a dessert or after dinner drink.

    First, I’m a HUGE try fan. I’ve watched hours and hours and hours of try, and I watch every week both new and old episodes. That being said, it seems like there is a trend recently, especially in the alcohol videos, for one pair to really like it, one pair to be moderate about it, and one pair to absolutely hate it. It doesn’t matter what it is. I know this will probably get buried in the comments, but it just has me curious because it makes the videos less fun to watch when it seems like sometimes one pair is like straining or searching for things not to like about something.
