    I appreciate this thoughtful review! I'm honestly a little annoyed that the market keeps getting saturated with devices that are this odd overpriced middle ground. It makes it really hard for people new to emulation devices like me, to feel confident in choosing. If I didn't know about your channel I'd be screwed trying to figure it out on my own! It'd be so much easier if the market was easily divisible by budget models, mid-grade models, premium models. I see some comments saying steam deck was underpriced which I actually didn't know, so I can see how that disrupted the market, but aside from that anomaly I think most would agree there's just far too many devices to choose from that often lack essential parts for performance, etc. Just some random two cents. 😅

    • @shlokshah5379
      @shlokshah5379 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that there are less of these devices! More competion means there will be more value for money. Before there was only gpd and aya which used to sell this over 1200$. Now even with top of the line specs the loki max with 6800u costs only800$. There is more confusion in the pc space

    • @Lilacs4
      @Lilacs4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shlokshah5379 I guess for someone in my position who grew up gaming on consoles (we had pcs too but weren't super into PC gaming til I got older) it seems like a lot and like it's pretty confusing and convoluted to distinguish between them. It also doesn't make sense to me to compare this to the PC market, this is clearly trying to compete with handheld gaming devices and makes more sense to me to compare it to handheld consoles. PCs have a million different uses outside of gaming which is why it can be so confusing and hard to choose.

    • @randzopyr1038
      @randzopyr1038 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes but it's a few $100 more. If this can perform x86 retro gaming into the early 00's I think plenty of people would be happy with that plus console emulation. This would be the first affordable x86 retro gaming option, the question is whether it's worth buying this over a $400 laptop depending on the sorts of games you wanna run, and whether the Windows power creep is gonna be so bad that this thing is underpowered in a year as Windows continues to eat up resources.
      Even less of an issue with SteamOS and Linux support.
      It's like comparing the Ayn Odin to the Retroid Pocket - definitely different units for different users.

    A lot of people rag on the Win600 but in reality it's not a totally bad handheld. I bought the lower spec one and just use it for light steam gaming with older titles. The good thing about this handheld, is the comfort factor in which it doesn't feel like you're holding a mini skateboard (still love the steam deck though). Also instead of you trying to go through hoops to install windows, It's already included on the handheld. I have it, while not better than the steam deck, I still like it. I’m sort of tempted to try out the 3020 for $299 since my use case is as an upgrade to my RG503 for emulation plus low end PC Gamepass and PC indie games that have been a pain to get working on my steam deck. For a long time I thought that Anbernic had hit rock bottom with the RG552 due to the bad and unthought-out ergonomics of the handheld (shoulder buttons). But with the Win600, Anbernic has managed to repeat the SAME mistake with the bad ergonomics (using the stick and operating the shoulder buttons at the same time) and as if that wasn't bad enough, in my opinion Anbernic also demands a much too high and very cheeky one Price for the service offered. It almost seems to me as if Anbernic is trying to compensate for their previously unachieved sales and profit targets with each additional product through an even poorer price-performance ratio. And that WITHOUT even paying attention to the most important point of all: THE BUYER 🤷‍♂️ That the buyer really has a good feeling with the handheld in the end and that especially in relation to a reasonable and fair price. Anbernic has achieved this goal with the RG351 series. Now Anbernic only draws attention to embarrassing actions against Taki Undo. This is a very weak signal from Anbernic. Thanks for the effort 👍

  • @BrianEmmons
    @BrianEmmons ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's a little big - passed on the 552 for the same reason - but the main reason I'm not ordering one right now is that analog stick placement. IMO the main purpose of this thing isn't the early-system emulation, there are lighter and cheaper devices for that, but the Steam gaming. That means using the analog sticks a lot. The placement/ergonomics of those are a make-or-break factor for an x86 handheld.
    It's important to recognize that battery life on a x86 handheld is always going to be a trade-off against size and performance. I'd rather have a smaller device, and that means I'd have to use it plugged in a lot. That's just the fact of x86, none of the other devices are going to be any better without also being much thicker and heavier. That's not Anbernic's fault, that's just how it is.

    Reality check, guys: I ordered Ayn Odin back in January and Steam Deck a full YEAR AGO and still haven’t received either! However, I WAS able to get one of these within 10 days of ordering. There’s nothing wrong with buying a device that is attainable from a manufacturer that knows what it’s doing to keep its supply chain operating efficiently! Awesome coverage on this device!~ I also put in an order for the Loki Zero, since that dual channel RAM is going to be massive here and the price point is 10x more attractive. Waiting's gonna suck though...
    Also, I just wanna comment on one thing - that Intel chip (1215U) is NOT going to be as good for gaming as you might think. The UHD graphics aren't all that capable and with these devices we are definitely running into a GPU bottleneck instead of a CPU one, so you won't see much of a practical performance gain. There are videos on YT that demonstrate that a Vega 3 APU (like the 3050e) is pretty much on-par with a 12th gen Intel chip at way higher TDP levels. Windows handhelds using Intel chips will turn out to be a trap, lemme tell ya~
    The upcoming AMD Mendocino architecture on the other hand... If it's not much more expensive, it should give a nice little performance boost, especially with that LPDDR5-6400 RAM and RDNA2 GPU. Shouldn't cost more than 300$ though, because we're getting too close to the Steam Deck otherwise.

    Where do you think we are heading towards?
    First we had the opendingux era were all OEMs were tweaking their devices and searching their main goal. Then we had the "RK3326" where OEMs were just working with what they had, so they tried to compete just with price and ergonomics. We had some devices where this wasn't the norm, so they became kinda trend setters, like the OG RP2 and TrimUI or the V90, so OEMs were still trying to do something different. Then we had the Android era (sweet but short), with some Android devices like the RP2+ and Odin, but then users faced the fact that this hobby wasn't just pick up and play and you needed to set up everything first. But the Steam deck was announced and now we are into the Windows era, where we still need some know-how to set up everything and most likely what you learned previously will fall short because you will need to know more. OEMs are most likely going to battle with price, but CPUs are not cheap so they will try to cut corners again, like what happened with the RAM on this case. So some are going to battle with specs, but we will have so many options on a niche, when that happens usually some not going to be able to keep up they will try to find their base again, so I expect that some experimentation will happen. But the companies that know what to release to attack one specific user base will probably endure, the same that go only for price (like powkiddy). So, what do you think will happen? What will happen after the Windows era? I'd love to hear your thoughts. We will see products that will aim to go outside the niche?

      I'm hoping we get a wave of RK3588 devices, because that chip is quite amazing compared to all other Rockchips. I do hope we continue to get devices that ship with a lightweight Linux like Batocera or EmuElec. Not everything needs a full Windows or Android OS. Having one just increases the RAM requirements really significantly.
      I actually hope Windows handhelds are a niche within a niche, and don't become dominant in this space. I feel the same about SteamOS actually. We don't need Microsoft or Valve controlling the OS that's used for open handhelds IMO.

      I prefer using my PC for that... and I just hate using a mouse with a gamepad.
      I mean, it's a personal opinion of course, but I think even Valve understands that their OS's interface has to be friendly and user-ready or dummies-proof. I just don't understand Android devices having to set everything up, and not to mention using the mouse with an analog because the lack of touch screens for example.
      So the future for me ideally would be something like batoceta, anberelec, retrobat... (emulation station interface) with mixed content like SteamOS, the ability to check retroachievements, screenshots and even online servers to join friends on good retro games within the interface without diving into RA. 👍

    Even some of its flaws and the somewhat higher price tag I ordered one because something that is rarely mentioned is the availability of these handhelds. The Ayn Odin is better in every way - except if you missed out on the (at the time, sketchy looking) crowed funding campaign you are waiting months and months for your order to ship. If you are like me and have a Steamdeck reservation in Q3 it might as well just wait for for my Steamdeck. All of the other options are either sold out or sells out almost instantly even if you try and get them ASAP. The options that are actually in stock are extremely expensive super high end handhelds.
    To give you an idea of how hard it is to get these things - tried to get an Ayn Odin second hand they easily get to $800-$1000 on the second hand markets if you find them. It is insane.
    The reason it is priced like it is, is because it has a decent form factor, decent specs, you can buy it with it shipping NOW, and it is under $500. I wanted something to hold me over until I got my Steamdeck and this was the only option I could get now without breaking the bank.

    That would be considered a RAM overclock not adjusting the timings. Tightening the timings themselves could result in better performance though. A slower ram with tighter latency can result in much better results generally as long as the ram frequency isn't drastically lower. Of course, the "die" on the RAM itself can vary stick to stick even in the same kit so adjusting the timings isn't generally advised unless you know how good the kit is or what they can be run at. Thaiphoon Burner is a great tool to figure out what die the memory has and can be used with the Ryzen DRAM Calculator to learn how to tighten the timings.

OK, so I'm exaggerating a little, but I'm not going to buy a device like that.
    As for the single channel ram, honestly I think they made it that way because they made it socketable. Their engineers had to know how much performance that zen cpu and, even more, that integrated gpu will lose, no way they didn't know it.
    Wouldn't be bothered about running it at 2666, unless bios is overvolting and overheating it. Which it shouldn't do.

    Very good video nice review , I was thinking on buying the device, but I’ve recently bought the rg552, about 2 months ago and been having a problem not charging and have orange light blinking , tried to get in touch with ambernic and no luck , by any chance you know what to do ? I had the same problem with my PS Vita but there’s a combination key to fix that, . Thank you in advance

    I still have my 7 inch Powkiddy X17 and it's still awesome! Had they made the Win600's button placement and overall design like the Powkiddy X17, people would probably be more willing to get one. It would have definitely fixed the spaced out button layout between the triggers and analog sticks.

    Hi, I really appreciate how in depth you take your reviews.
    I have a question regarding the Windows 10 part of the device. How well does it work with streaming videos like TH-cam or Netflix?
    I ask because I have grown accustomed to watching videos with playback sped up to >2x speed now through add-ons available on the firefox browser. This is all fine for the desktop experience. However, I have been trying to get this feature to work on Android and surprisingly there is not anything like it that supports >2x speed unless I download the video, and play it sped up on VLC player.
    Would it be possible to enable add-ons like "video speed controller" or "global speed" on the firefox browser through Windows 10 and play videos with decent quality at say like 3.8x speed on this device?

      @@Dracossaint Yeah it really is specific. I spent a lot of time looking for a way to play videos like this through streaming and there really is nothing like it at the moment.
