Today we're doing a MRE Review of the MCW or Meal Cold Weather... the US Military's delicious answer to extreme cold weather conditions. This single meal dehydrated ration is designed to be 1 of 3 consumed for a full day's chow in ECW conditions... all 3 totaling over 4500 calories.
In the Arctic and other sub-zero places, where any liquid component will freeze and the body CRAVES more calories for energy, you need a MRE that can stand up to the harsh conditions. Does the MCW fit the bill, or should we leave Arctic Warfare to the Finns?
This ration actually replaced the Ration, Long Range Patrol in the US Military.

If you're in cold climate deployment maybe there would be tons of snow, so you wouldn't necessarily need to hump a bunch of water, bcuz you could just melt the snow. Just make sure it ain't yellow.
In 2003 I was herding sheep in Montana and a team of Special Forces training in the area scared off my sheep. They spent all night as I slept gathering them silently with their night vision systems. Early in the morning they stopped by my trailer with apologies,10 lbs of sausage and 2 cases of MCWs. My 850 sheep were laying where they should be, content.
During my time in the NG I'd had MREs but I'll say those MCWs were GOOD with extra sides like extra drinks, an extra snack, M&Ms and a dehydrated soup in every one. The MCW turkey tetrazzini is my absolute favorite ration main.

You dont need to carry more water. You melt snow. You have to give up a lot of tactical issues to sustain in that environment. For water, you only fill your canteens aboutt 80% and lightly salt them to avoid freezing. You also get alot of things like packets of chicken and noodle soup. Jello in hot water tastes great and was a staple for us. You can make fighting positions out of "IceCrete" and just snow and they will stop AK rounds with no problem. You dont go into cigar shape perimeters or get the prone during halts as any tracker can count exactly how many men are in your patrol and the phone sucks the heat out of you. UV glasses as using binos and optics will make you go sunblind much faster. Wire and sticks around smoke grenades so they dont just sink through the snow and a million other things.

If the US usually issues FRH with their MRE, I assume that they have to issue stove/cookers with the CWMRE.

You said dehydrated. Didn't you mean freeze dried? Dehydrated weighs more and takes longer to get ready to eat than freeze dried.
I miss the cigarette packs in the meals, they need to bring that back.
Yeah, lots of people miss those, but I think those days aren't coming back.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion on tobacco products for sure, but I can tell you even the non-smokers were looking for a cig after coming through their first firefight. It's a little link to reality that I don't know how people could manage the stresses of combat without.
The way I see it, the military could outlaw all tobacco products anytime they want to. They don't, because they know that nicotine is actually a useful substance for aggression and alertness and smoking is ubiquitous in combat. They can no longer condone or encourage it like they did back in the day, but they still stop short of outlawing it.
