Me and my father loved anything Paleo or primitive and bonded over learning and enjoying this kind of stuff. It's been some time since he passed but watching your stuff makes me feel as if he's right next to me. Thank you keep it up
I read in a book by an American indian that many stone breakers were men with a disability like a club foot, and often they would be taken under the wing of an older stone breaker and learn the craft as boys. A good stone breaker was in great demand so even with a deformity a man could gain great status.
Thank you for making me Google knapping. I always appreciate seeing a video from you. I love your work and I thank you so much for your knowledge you share. ❤❤❤
yup. Got lots of those turtles... they are sitting in a box, looking at me, waiting for the end of time...but now I will make them pay. They will all be arrowheads, atlatl heads or small knife blades in no time.
Don, I just got intrigued with knapping and had received a “starter kit” with copper tools when I came across your site. I’ve watched several vids to start my knapping education. I’m quite impressed with your knowledge & presentations of guidance; learned a LOT from watching several of your vids. Thank you! I plan on heading down to a nearby creek to search now for stone tools & knap-stones. Wish me luck! I’ll catch many more of your vids. If I can knap a good stone ax head I’ll try to make a bow as you showed us how in one vid. Keep your Joy of Life!!
Awesome man ...this man know his stuff ...love to meet him ...he's pure legend...tha world need people like him ....I'll wait for nxt video donny ...hope all is well with u an take care bro ...always here for ya ...
@@Robo.1776 no I agree he doesn’t even have to do the video idea I just think it would be neat to see him hunt and make small hut for a night using the tools he’s made. Have a lot of respect for Donny and will still watch whatever he brings out

Great video! I’m in NE Louisiana and spend most of my time napping chert gravel, some of it really small stuff. It’s usually turtle-backed to some degree. Your approach is great for big pieces and pieces the size of a thumb. Love all your videos, please keep it up.
Thanks for the video! Ive been knap ping Christmas presents for my family, been having some trouble with those hill flakes, so thanks! Working on an ancient Aztec macuahuitl
Greetings to you friend and how the class 👍a can you video about your campaigns really like to watch you how hunt from the onion and I think people will also be interesting to luck and health care
Thank you for this lesson I have learned a lot that I didn't know before you make it look easy outstanding video awesome content thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
Dude this is such a great video, I feel personally attacked lol. I struggle so hard with turtleback formations, and have often set them aside as unworkable or unworthy. Thank you for the help once again!
what is the most facinating to me is he only hits once to get a flake. i just started out and im doing so much more hitting to get way less mass and pretty muchs shrinking the apoint to an unusable rock. a master of the trade for sure!
Loved the video! Have you ever thought about replicating some lithics /projectile points from archaeological sites from your part of the world? Would love to see that!
He did a video a few weeks back called Knapping Trash where he worked with a chunk of an old glass jar. No instruction in that like this one has, though, just video of him knapping it.
I'm not a knapper, but I've always been fascinated by it. I have a friend/mentor that flintknaps. He heat treats his stones, I noticed it would drastically alter colors of some stones. Like... blue coastal flint would turn a brown, almost amber color. Is there any historic evidence they heat treated stone before shaping? Does it change the property of the stone other than color and affect how easy it is to work?
Stones in water break different..heating tends to embrittled the stone...indians had campfires .. heat treating is 60% magic 37% science .2% larceny and arson .
I have access to 50+ pounds of Oregon obsidian, that being said what is the easiest material for a beginner to work? I have access to hundreds of pounds of Jasper and various forms of agate as well. No flint or chert or anything locally though.
The folks I learned from call it a turtle back when you are working on something like a biface and a bump or mound is on one side from bad flakes or flakes that break before they run their course. These are the biggest problem for me because when a flake snaps, it leaves no ridges or platforms that I can easily use to take off the turtle back without seriously taking the edge down and making the piece a whole lot smaller. Any advice?
Hey! Is that chalcedony or quartz inside there? Does that matter? What do you prefer? Blowing my mind on this one! I LOVE how you manipulated that stone! 👌👌👌👌👌
Guide the shockwave. Move the center mass up and be ready to hit it really hard. Understand that no matter what you do it's going to end up smaller than before.

Thank you Don, I've looked at those 'turtle backs', and NEVER attempted them. I'm certainly going to do it now.
Give it a shot…you will see how easy they can be. Thanks for watching.

Just wanted to say you've inspired me to pick up the craft. Material is hard to come by in southeast texas though unfortunately.

Could you try to make a peck-and-grind basalt adze or Celt?
What a beautiful baby boy!!!!
I've found so many turtle back scraper's when I look for rocks.
Can you or have you done a video on knapping glass?
