I was in a waffle house about midnight last Saturday night during a thunderstorm. Suddenly, all the electricity at every business on the East side of the street went off. The customers just kept eating and the staff said “well we don’t have any electricity, but we have gas so we can still cook”, and they just kept on cooking waffles.
It's really hard to capture that actual genuine late night early morning slightly delirious atmosphere after drinks when it all blurs a little and just happens naturally. It just can't be faked. This video has it and then some. I think we all know a time that felt exactly like this. One of your best vids.
Makes sense, I mean, you're replenishing all your salts, you're carb and fat loading. Not to mention the protein. Basically, you're giving you body everything it need to bounce back quickly. (Ollie’s “what have you done? We’re going to die.”) 🤣🤣. That said - nothing beats a good 24-hour breakfast menu!
The United States FEMA actually has a Waffle House index to measure how bad weather is during hurricane season cause they are the last to close and only close during extreme storms.😂
I worked for two different Waffle Houses for a total of four years. The one and only time we ever closed down was under the threat of a category 4 hurricane.
I'm from New Orleans and I remember after Katrina we drove through Biloxi Mississippi, because we have some family that way. There the main highway is along the beach, it was water, sand, four lanes, then big houses and a few stores, then maybe 5 blocks back train tracks and higher land. The entire place was completely leveled all the way to the tracks, nothing but road and debris. Except for the Waffle House. It was still standing. Across the street from the beach. That and all of the toilets and bathtubs (plumbing will survive a bomb, even some of the second floor stuff made it, just hanging in the air on old metal pipes). It was years before people started building on the land that go cleared but waffle house reopened within a month.

Here's a fun fact: here in Florida we judge how severe a hurricane is by asking "has Waffle House closed down?" If Waffle House has closed down, then you know the hurricane is going to be hellacious
Local, state, and federal agencies use the Waffle House Index to determine the severity of a storm. Per Wikipedia, "The term was coined by former administrator Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The metric is unofficially used by FEMA to inform disaster response." It further states: "The "Waffle House Index" sits alongside more formal measures of wind, rainfall, and other weather information, such as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, which are used to indicate the intensity of a storm."

No Waffle House visit is complete until the evening ends in a vicious fistfight with total strangers and then random vomiting in the parking lot.
Bro in the middle was on a different plain of existence while also guiding his fellowship through the journey 😂
That is the spirit of Waffle House...

It's really hard to capture that actual genuine late night early morning slightly delirious atmosphere after drinks when it all blurs a little and just happens naturally. It just can't be faked. There’s nothing as unintentionally hilarious as having a massive portion of food put in front of you when it’s late and you’re already tired - all it takes is one comment that hits you just right and it’s all over - you’re rolling out of the chair, racked with fits of the giggles.
I used to work third shift Waffle House, the only way we were closing was if a tornado blew directly into the building.
This is true. If waffle house is open. You might be ok. If waffle house closes, you get to a higher state immediately.
This is legit. Relief agencies watch for when waffle house reopens as indicator that the supply chain is recovering

It’s not just Florida. FEMA uses the Waffle House index to see how bad a disaster or storm is. If waffle houses are closed, they pay attention.
The Waffle House Index
You look up WH closures to see areas worst affected
Louisiana too 😂😂
Local, state, and federal agencies use the Waffle House Index to determine the severity of a storm. Per Wikipedia, "The term was coined by former administrator Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The metric is unofficially used by FEMA to inform disaster response."
It further states: "The "Waffle House Index" sits alongside more formal measures of wind, rainfall, and other weather information, such as the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, which are used to indicate the intensity of a storm."
Mississippi too! 😊
