The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Oh my goodness, thank you a million times for posting this! I have wanted to see Mary Hopkin sing this song on the Sullivan show for decades. This is absolutely beautiful! What incredible footage! Mary has always been one of my favorite singers. This song was written by and a big hit for the Ray Noble Orchestra with Al Bowlly on vocals back in the early '30's. It was included on Mary's "Postcard" album, and I played it so many times. Now all the Mary Hopkin performances from Sullivan have been posted! Thanks again for this wonderful video!

Hobby Horse’s “Summertime, Summertime” received a lot of air play in the NYC area and I believe Boston. In fact as a H. S. Teen, I thought it was the original version at that time and did not know about the Jamies somewhat less energetic version.

Ed Sullivan was tops back then. Today, a presentation like this would never even get to the broadcast or cable television stage, and if somehow it did, it would unfortunately likely be laughed off the air with total contempt, primarily by Gens Y and Z.

What a beauty! The quintessential English Rose and that voice! Does a fan know what she does these days- as opposed to "those days"- I was, and AM, a Marianne Faithfull fan, and of course, of Dusty, Cilla and Julie Driscoll and Francoise Hardy- plus the folk singers, especially the ladies of folk, on both sides of the Atlantic, but Mary seemed to capture a moment- maybe it was Paul McCartney's song and marketing- I bought her 1st album, used, bit scratched but very, very, enjoyable- if I had a nursery school I'd be teaching the kids- "Inchworm". She was decidedly "well scrubbed" in a decade which frowned on that vibe, but looks and talent and charm are never out of fashion! Let me know somebody- I hope she is alive- I should look- too many of those incredible women standing up in their own way for a woman's right to be in a band! We take all that for granted- my late gran, never stopped complaining of long, "ironed" hair, racoon ringed-eyes, white lips, Julie and Dusty! And the most outrageous thing of all- a girl, a female drummer! The Honeybees? Loved it! Namaste ( with Putin behaving like the nefarious thug he is in The Ukraine, we need "gentle and hopeful". So I send sweet Mary Hopkin in "spirit" to those poor souls- the prayers of Canadians go to you and if you can, come live here, we aren't perfect but we have more freedom, accommodations, food, and jobs! )

It was a 'story' piece within the Ed Sullivan show. Mary was playing an ingenue on a mythical 30s (to match the song) talent show. The proverbial rags to riches success! This was apt as Mary was also 'discovered' on a TV talent show.

Thumbs up for McCartney following through on Twiggy’s discovery and signing Mary as one of the first artists for Apple records. However his idea for Mary‘s first album, “Postcards“ was as a nostalgic look back at simpler times, which was popular in pop music then, but not entirely right for Mary, who preferred more of a folk music sound. McCartney produced a song or two on Postcards and then turned the project over to Mickey Most. Mary got her wish performing music more to her liking on her second album, with producer and future husband Tony Visconti.
