      I discovered Al Bowlly when I might have been about 3 and he would be on the radio, doing his thing. I took absolutely no notice then. I wish I had been the age I am now but I'm making up good time these days. On the "Ought to See Sally....etc" track, he enjoyed "Freddie boy's" horn playing. At least he had fun doing it.

      I live in Moscow, I have a lot of vinyl records at home and one day 2 years ago I found among them a record with songs by Al Bowley, they were so good that I became a big fan of this great singer. I also listen to his songs every day. But the main thing is not to forget the tremendous contribution of Ray Noble to the work of Al Bowley, these people were legends in their field.

    Al Bowley great human being has well has a fine singer when he came to Nottingham, he toured the depressed coalfield, he went into a miner's home, and had a cup of tea with this woman who told him about the financial problems and desperation of the miner's families, she asked him if he would sing for her, and gave a rendition of love is the sweetest thing, after he broke down and sobbed, he was in the Victoria Pub car park and to a large crowd he sang the very thought of you, and promised the miner's and families he would be back, unfortunately he was tragically killed before he could keep his promise, they said that the village was stunned when the news reached them for they remembered a beautiful kind caring man with the golden voice

      We'd hear Bowlly and Ray Noble's orchestra all the time and didn't take much notice. I didn't especially, being only knee high. but he was just a band singer even if the best around. It's now he's appreciated, even more than past times in the 70s for instance. Pity he doesn't know...…...or......does he??

    • @petertaylor3600

      The generation that was there then are almost gone now, but you and I possibly were small kids and to us it was a dreamy time. There was a war coming and they were all scared, but we had no idea about that. There was a dpression but that was for them to worry about, not you and I. It looks like a beautiful time from this distance, but there were things that were wrong on many levels. But, the music especially the popular stuff, has never been bettered. But, there's usually more to an era than that. All in all, we're probably lucky it isn't then, now.

      @@lesliepoole8705 Ah, I was 8 when he died, so that should tell you something. You're just never too old, that's what! But, seriously, it is timeless. The music composed by Ray Noble which Al was associated with are pop classics. But, nobody noticed him much when I would heard him on the radio, then. The artist who made that album cover missed the essential look of him. Essential if you want to really get the look. Crooked teeth and one missing on his left top jaw. His face wasn't as full as this. All things that portray somebody and their character. An artist, I would have shown these things to give him something that was indisputably his character. But whoever it was thought they were improving.

      Most likely Caroll Gibbons (1903-1954), Massachusetts -born piano player who became the bandleader of London's Savoy Orpheans and the New May Fair orchestras. Ray Noble took over the latter.

      Don’t forget the great Ray Noble, he also wrote a lot of Bowlly’s songs. It’s probably him and his great band.

    Wasn't he a grande singer what a beautiful voice only he had lived longer maybe he could have given Crosby a run for his money I love the way you looked when he sang horrible inside ending awful album cover terrible photo doesn't do him Justice

    • @petertaylor3600
      @petertaylor3600 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He went to the US in the late 30s as a competition for Crosby but didn't make it then. Could have been the vocal chords that needed surgery. But when you listen, his voice improved post op. before relapsing shortly before his death. Al was no slouch!
