Duke Ellington would be so pleased to hear this young lady perform one of his standard arrangements. Strayhorn would never in his wild imagination believe that Nikki Yanofsky would someday give such a rendition to his creation. Roger Plafkin-Plafkin Farms, Ada, Michigan
17 y/o Montreal jazz singer Nikki Yanofsky on French network television. She begins a nine city tour of France oct 14 2011 in Toulouse, culminating with a performance at the famed Olympia in Paris. She sold out La Cigale in Paris in the spring of this year. Nikki is extremely popular in France, being on all the TV shows and is often recognized on the street, esp. in Paris. Her "Nikki" album debuted in France #1 on the jazz charts a year ago, and the latest 2011 sales stats put it at #1 jazz.
Love it, she is so talented. She seems to scat sing pretty well which is extremely difficult to do well. Uploader - xavierpebayle - thanks for the video. Is there any way to change the settings of this video so it can be viewed on mobile devices? I think you would have to edit the settings that this video can be played in.
@drhavner Nikki will blow your mind with her scat singing on "I've Got Rhythm" and "Mr. Paganini," including note-for-note unison scat singing with her pianist. You can find both on youtube, but the best versions on her 2010 CD "Nikki" and DVD "Live in Montreal." Also check out her marvelous live straight-ahead jazz on "Stompin at the Savoy"-search youtube terms "yanofsky KPLU savoy" Wonderful scat break in the middle that makes my heart soar-i see bluebirds in a summer sky every time I listen.
Caught her at Catalinas bar and Grill in Hollywood a couple of years ago. She knocked the house down. A great young talent on the waay up, all the way up to the top.
It's amazing what can be achieved without the glitz & effects of the likes of Maddona or Lady Gaga. This is real people, and real music;- a refreshing change, and true delight !
Let's not overstate things. She is not extremely popular in France. And even though it may happen with a few jazz freaks in Paris, I doubt many people recognize her on the street. It is true, however that as a jazz musician she is becoming increasingly popular here.
@mybutterpecanbutt Nikki sure has what it takes to swing it-try her CD, DVD, try youtube search the terms " A Train yanofsky live HD" Don't get your slow tempo comment-if this was sped up, it would be too fast-it is NOT slower than ANY rendition I can find: Ellington , Krall, Brubeck, composer Strayhorn with Ellington, Anita O' Day-in fact, it is a little more UP tempo. She is with musicians she doesn't know here. Maybe you mean it has less swing feel in this performance rather than slow tempo.
hmm this is the slowest arrangement of Take the A Train I've ever heard. It makes it sound like soft jazz or easy listening. I don't know why they slowed it down. I think she has what it takes to swing it out like it was written. On the up side this is the first time I've understood everything the vocalist is singing. Great vocals. Lacklustre arrangement.
best A Train around these days, not of course to take anything away from Ella... love this girls voice and style. go girl!
AMAZING, Effortless, Beautiful!

"I love NY; T-shirts say they love me too."
