    Guys..just so you all know...our front winch was broken 🤕 We have had a lot of comments suggesting we use some sort of land anchor to winch off of. This was impossible for us at the time because, as we said, our winch was busted!! Thanks for all the comments though guys! We're loving hearing from you all!!

      amazing persistance, but,its desperation, it has to be done.no fun, at all.. winching the van, id of tried skidding the tow bar around, pivot it, tie a track to the tow bar,. im not a fan of towing trailers , anywhere, not even for work.. theres lots of self contained 4x4 trucks to choose from. or second hand. mate bought an old army acco, when they were changing to unimogs..idea to fit caravan on back, job done.. ended up with an international scout. we left s.a. to karumba. me in a 78 f100 4x4. back in 82.. karumba to burketown is interesting. hot springs, old steem engine, to pump the water. excellent fishing, concrete warf at burketown. nothing there, 2nd ww history. theres salt pans, you might....like.....again, amazing effort. 👍🦘🌏

      You can use a tow rope too bro , if winch isn’t working you can bury the spare and double wrap the rope aroundt tyre so it pinches on itself and then as the wheel turns it pulls you toward the spare wheel, you do have to get the wheel of the ground to wrap the rope around tho so it can be a bit of a drag ,

    Based on where you go and what you are driving, I would suggest some pneumatic lift bags. We had them when I was a firefighter for rescue work. They are very thin, have a large surface area, can conform to the shape of the object being lifted, are highly puncture resistant, and can lift a tremendous amount of weight with just compressed air. Your situation is obviously too soft for a conventional jack. The surface area of the lift bags overcomes this, and because they are thin, you only need a cm or two to get it under the vehicle. Once lifted, you can place your mats under the tire instead of trying to drive on to them

    I’ve just discovered you guys and having watched this video I have to say that you are both awesome people. The relationship you have with each-other is incredible. There are very few people that have the ability to stay that calm, retain their sense of humour, support each-other and to talk so nicely to each-other in the face of adversity. Good luck with the repairs, looking forward to following you on your adventures.

    Top Tip. Burry the spare wheel away in front of the truck, hook the winch cable through the centre of the wheel to a tyre iron or big spanner and then pull yourself out up to the spare. Drive safe.

    You guys are just champions. What Stella examples to your kids of acting with character in tough times. This was one of the best outback vids I've seen, mainly because you were real, you were vulnerable, positive mindsets. I have to say your ability to keep your cool and support each other is inspirational. Lastly, I teared up when the emotion of finally getting the truck out overflowed in the cab. Good on you both. And happy mothers day.

    Mistakes happen, but good work getting out!. Good to see you two in high spirits about that mess and keeping a calm head. Definitely some valuable lessons learned here. I've busted u joints and knuckles before putting power to a steer axle at full lock because I had no other choice. Then it's a worse situation with three, or even worse, two wheel drive. One tip for getting out of slick spots is to power brake. Don't mess with a handbrake. Foot on the brake, foot on the throttle, and let off the foot brake. Maybe you guys tried it, but a lot of people don't know about that little trick. It's gotten me out of more than a few slick situations in passenger vehicles and loaded semis at 105,000 pounds (about 48,000 kg).

  • @4x4smile
    @4x4smile ปีที่แล้ว +5

    CV is my bet. The isuzu 300 CV seem to break when at high load and steering wheel turned to lock. Another youtuber had the exact thing happen on fraiser. He ended up using the bump stop bolt to make it so he could not get full lock. Man you were on mission to dig that out, great job by all of you. The digger, the driver, the nanny :).

    • @4x4smile
      @4x4smile ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thecartwrights snapped right on full lock. That is a bit of a poor design and would be on your mind every time it gets sticky. Hopefully isuzu see your vid and fix the underlying issue because when you think of it it, it wasn't really hard going for it in that there was plenty of slip going on (lowering the actual stress you could put on it). The one in fraiser happened in nice soft slippery sand but at full lock. Its not like it was rock crawling with deflated tyres where there would be a lot more stress introduced. My thought is someone (isuzu mgmt) just decided to cut the turning circle by 2ft and never thought about the odd angled stress in the UNI joint.

    Use the rear winch, bury the spare tire behind the caravan as an anchor point, use a snatch block to move the caravan back away from the Isuzu. Now you've got room to use the rear winch and anchor to ease the Isuzu back out of the bog. :)

    There isn't a part of the outback where you can allow yourself to forget what you're doing and lose concentration, especially when you have a wife and three kids in tow, so for that you did deserve your self ass kicking. But having said that I was impressed by your work ethic and calmness at getting yourselves back out again, well done. I managed to break my rear hub studs towing a small camper trailer across the Simpson a while back and was looking at 3 to 4 weeks before a friend drove across from Melbourne to help me get out. I ended up paying Mt Dare $2500 (RACQ paid me back as part of my roadside recovery plan though :) ) to come out and recover me after a few days instead even though I still had 3 or 4 weeks worth of water and food with me.

I was baffled why you weren't using your front winch then I read your comment where you said its broken... I presume the back one works?... just an idea encase it happens again, some how i don't think it will :) , but all you needed to do was take the spare of, bury it so its facing sideways head on, thread the rear cable under the truck and strap it to your spare/anchor, again the spare needs to be burried right down, a small trench to allow cable to be straight... this would have worked Im sure of it.. regardless I take my hat or to you both for your determination and perseverance ... may you guys be forever blessed on your travels..

    Very good recovery after a stupid mistake that could happen to anyone...
    That little boy just happily crawled onto dad's lap ready for the next adventure, a Desert Race !!!! wohooooo.....
    Thanks for a video with lessons learned, and how to keep your cool during an emergency situation.
    Another big downpour, and the water could have flooded your newly dug escape trenches....
    Hope the truck was an easy fix...

    My first Cartwrights video! You did great! I watch a lot rock crawling and recovery videos, mostly in Utah (absolutely unsurpassed beauty) and Oregon (more unsurpassed beauty) and I kept telling you what to do! But you all did great! Just don't do it again LOL! You have a new subscriber cause those are some beautiful blue eyes you're sporting, I'm going to look for more!

    Been there on my own, 5 hrs it took me to get moving, exhausted.
    Lessons learned?
    Consider:
    Doubling up on the Maxtrax,
    Get the front winch fixed / replaced,
    Get some diff-lockers fitted,
    Buy a turfor and ground anchor,
    Press-on and stay loving each other and civil.
    You’re good for the rest of your lives,
    Love you guys ❤️🇷🇴

      Unhitch the van as soon as you start to spinning the wheels. Stay well away from the waters edge. Get an airbag capable of lifting your vehicle. A working winch is a must for soft conditions.

    Absolutely unbelievable!! Amazing you got out! If you haven't looked into this idea yet, a land anchor might be a good tool to add to your recovery gear. It's a giant spade that you hook your winch to, and as you winch, it digs itself into the ground, giving you a recovery spot anywhere you need it!
    Great videos i enjoy watching 👌

    got in a similar situation but not so severe on the Connie Sue heading towards Cocklebiddy last November, did lots wrong. after getting stuck, dug for about 6 hours, stopped. slept the night and thankfully was able to winch out with more digging the next day.
