Journey on the Ghan, Adelaide to Darwin

  • The Ghan is one of the most iconic trains in Australia and travelling by rail on this train between Adelaide and Darwin is considered one of the worlds great train journeys. We had talked about doing it for some time but it was only when our cruise to the South Pacific in November 2020 got cancelled that we seriously started looking at it. There was the little matter of a milestone birthday to celebrate and if possible it was decided that it would be nice to mark the occasion with a memorable trip. This eventually led to a trip in February 2021. It was certainly memorable and we took a camera so we could share our experience with others.
The Ghan is named after the Afghan Camel riders who were the first to use the route through the outback. Today we have the opportunity to see the same vistas in comfort. At it's full length the train can be over 1 km long, however for our trip it was less than 800 m. There are a number of lounge and restaurant cars and there 2 different classes you can travel in, Gold and Platinum (there was previously a more budget class but that is no longer available). Along the way there are opportunities to visit Marla, Alice Springs and Katherine. The food is amazing, the staff are fantastic, the scenery is memorable and the trip is unforgettable.

We really enjoyed this informative and entertaining insight into the Ghan, it's the best I've seen on any of the great Australian train trips. Great video work and presentation. Thank you for posting, you are both naturals in front of the camera, loved it.

Many thanks for the kind words. We really enjoyed doing it. It was a great trip. I'm hoping that the Indian Pacific will become an option in the not too distant future.

The outback really is the outback, isn't it? Endless miles of hardly anything. Extraordinary, if a bit numbing after a while.

Just seeing this review now. Thank you for sharing!! If you don't mind me asking, do you think the 3/4 size double bed (or large single) can take the 2 bodies? If i'm not mistaken I think you tried both it and the bunk throughout your journey. All the best, Paul.

It can because we both slept in it on the first night. However, there wasn't a lot of room to spare. It was closer to being a King Single. As seen in the video, for the second night I used the top bunk instead.

IMO the music is a bit moody for a train review/doco. It might be suited for some kind of space related review...

Hello from New Zealand we would like to do this trip what are the costs for all classes of travel, great video thank you

There's no black and white answer to this unfortunately as the prices change but what I can say is we picked a good time and deal but didn't have much change from $2,500 each. We did pay for an upgrade as you can see in the video. To ugrade all the way to Platinum would have cost us more again but in actual fact the Superior Gold cabin (whilst perhaps not as luxurious) is actually bigger than the Platinum ones as I understand it. Like anything else it depends on a lot of things, what time of the year, availability and what special deals may be available so keep a look out. It's probably worthwhile looking at www.journeybeyondrail.com.au

I see a TV in the cabin , does it work or have movies etc , it looks like an old analogue TV. I plan to go in 2022 in platinum but thought no TV anywhere on train .

We didn't actually use the TV at any time during the trip. I suspect it probably works though.

I'm thinking of doing the ghan from Adelaide to Darwin or Sydney to Perth on the Indian Pacific train trip

We certainly enjoyed our trip. We would like to do the Indian Pacific too. The biggest issue at the moment is the fickle nature of borders and how they seem to change with little notice. Even with our trip I was pretty concerned about it. The Indian Pacific deals with more borders and has been subject to more cancellations as I understand it. We would like to do some more train journeys but we're going to wait until things have settled down a bit and focus instead just on local trips in our boat and 4WD.

What a lovely video , we are going on the Ghan soon. My only question is do they have public toilets outside the cabins? The trip will be a birthday present to each other for the next 20 years, ha ha. 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃

I actually don't recall. I think I only ever used the one in our cabin but I suspect there must have been. Probably a question for the company. The Ghan used to have another more budget class you could travel in but now it's just Gold and Platinum. So bearing that in mind I suspect the common areas probably do. I just don't recall.
