Good-quality, natural-fiber clothing is expensive to make, we have lost sight of the true cost of it because of cheap, synthetic fast-fashion. My beloved late Mom taught me from the beginning to buy high quality and I always have, but the quality of clothes, as well as the prices, have declined. It continually became harder to find good quality since the 90s. I saw a skirt “set” I loved on, I think, Me+M, but I checked the fiber content and it was 100% polyester. It was also $500 each for the skirt and matching blouse! If it were silk, I might have splurged on it, but the price was simply outrageous for such a cheap fabric. A thousand dollars for a plastic outfit! I’d rather give that money to my local animal shelter.
I agree; the lack of quality in even expensive items makes me think about sewing again. I've seen $1,000 coats that are half synthetic. That's ridiculous. $100+ sweaters that are totally synthetic. How do they sell this stuff when the same retailer is also selling 100% merino wool sweaters for $40 and their cashmere on sale is
I have noticed this also - even items I bought at Kohl’s 5 years ago, had higher cotton content than the pieces I Iooked at just yesterday, mostly polyester 😣and acrylic!
Yes, high prices for garbage!! I was about to buy a cashmere sweater for $450 but I decided to read the customer reviews first and almost everyone complained about the poor workmanship, the pills, fabric stretched out. I can't even find quality clothes in the USA anymore.
I think we are being gaslit to believe cotton garments are more expensive to make. I believe the fashion industry is moving more towards synthetics so cotton production is getting less common for low cost brands, but expensive brands are going to always be expensive even when they use synthetic materials. Phasing out cotton in favor of synthetics is making cotton more expensive, if that makes sense. I can still find cotton sweaters at the same price of some acrylic ones. I seriously believe the fashion industry is pulling a fast one on people.
The question about young people and using fast fashion to learn their style was such an interesting one. My first job in high school was at a budget retailer that sold cheapo but cute clothes - but my mother discouraged me from buying anything from there - even with my employee discount. She reminded me how much of their stuff got returned due to its shoddy quality and added 2 things I've never forgotten. 1) it's not a deal if you won't wear it more than once or twice and 2) "we're not rich enough to afford junky pieces that need to be replaced often." She basically forced me to save my pay cheques and buy fewer things of much better quality - several pieces I still have 30 years later!
I wash my clothes a lot less than I used to, my grandmother taught my Mom and I that they don’t all need to be washed after every wearing (except for hosiery, underwear and exercise clothes, of course). I wear everything else at least three times, except if I get a spot - then I deal with it right away. When I give my too-big things away, the recipients say “but they’ve never been worn”! They have, they just haven’t been washed and machine-dried dozens of times. I rarely wear anything out. I never put clothes in the dryer, for one thing. I just hang them on a clothesline I put up in my laundry room, or for knits, dry flat. I have a big stand fan that I turn on, it cuts the drying time in half and only uses a tiny fraction of the energy that a hot tumble-dryer does.
I do a light dry and hang things up until they are fully dry. I agree, undies and workout clothes have to be washed after one use. Though with workout hoodies and workout pants, I wash after wearing for one week's worth of workouts (unless I messed them up on the floor workouts) Unless I break a sweat, I can wear a blouse 2x, turn it inside out, and hang them on a hook outside my closet door.
Great tips and I agree! Hanging clothes I have worn in the fresh air freshens them up. And air drying instead of tumble drying is better for the electricity bill, the environment and the longevity of the clothes.
Another thing you raised - the recycled polyester dress issue. I recently watched a documentary that made a very compelling argument that such garments are actually terrible for the environment - as they are mainly made from plastic bottles that would otherwise have been recycled back into plastic bottles almost into infinity. Once those bottles have been removed from this "closed loop" recycling system and converted into fabric they're no longer recyclable - and vastly more likely to wind up in one of those old clothing mountains in the landfills.
Marie Anne, thank you for this terrific podcast. How we look after our clothes is linked to how we look after ourselves: mental, physical, emotional. Making slow fashion choices is so aligned to your principles. Thank you for helping me make smarter choices… I have clothes that are 30 years old that are quality pieces… and your advice has helped me style these in new and elegant ways.
Wool is shorn from sheep and they need to be sheared or their wool becomes too heavy for them, matted and infested. Wearing lambswool does not harm the animal.
I use mesh laundry bags for simany of my pieces to protect them and use the delicate cycle on cold water wash. Keeos my clothes looking new far longer. I also wear many items at least twice before washing. Jeans I wear many times before washing. I usually keep clothes for years that way.
Aloha from Hawaii! I am a plus size senior citizen who has always been involved in some aspect of retail fashion in Hawaii. I worked in a more upscale department store where clothes were better quality and, yes, prices were higher. But, women dressed beautifully and of course quickly picked up many items at major sales. Still n all, buying quality clothing elevates your outfit by fitting well and looking chic. Thank you for encouraging elegance and chic in place of cheap, gawdy, and frumpy!
About 20 months ago I really took a look at the contents of my wardrobe... old, fuddy duddy and downright awful. I got a bit of a fright really, and went a bit mad ordering cheap and cheerful clothes online. Some of those have been great but others; not so much. New Years resolution... quality over quantity. Marie-Anne, your sound advice has finally penetrated my thick skull. Thank you for help. It's been a big year for you and yet you've still been here for us. Merry Christmas lovely you.
In Australia with high uv light , I rind I significantly increase the life of my clothes by line drying in shade.... less fading and slower deterioration of stretch and elastic
Hi there! Fellow Australian here. Yes, i have the clothesline on the eastern side of the house so it doesnt get the harsh afternoon sun and if anything is precious to me i turn it inside out or hang under the house.
For some time now I have been hunting down good quality men's coats - from brocantes and charity shops. I then re-model them into jackets, waistcoats, and skirts, occasionally hats. the quality of the fabric simply doesn't seem to be available anymore, and I have found beautiful tweeds, twills, and barratheas. I certainly don't see anyone else in the same thing and after the effort of making it I know it will last for several more years.
This was a fantastic livestream, Marie-Anne. Such a great topic with sound advice and I completely agree with everything you've mentioned. That's a beautiful outfit you're wearing, so chic and comfortable. Loved to see Coco too. Merci beaucoup pour votre conseil, ma chère. 🙏🏻💕
I think respecting clothes is a reflection of ourselves. I find it astounding that people think that they can leave clothes, however expensive, on the floor of changing rooms.😫😫😫 Thank you Marie Anne for your continued commitment to helping us all. 💖💖💖Sally S.
I agree with you Sally - caring for your clothes is a mark of respect for them and yourself AND well cared for you they will make you look better too 😃
I still love and wear items that are 40 years old. My beloved Dior long wool coat for one, footwear, belts, scarves, etc. I tend to keep footwear and accessories forever, they’re not affected by weight changes. (I gained weight in my 30s and 40s, but it came off again in my 60s). Footwear styles come back in eventually. When chunky boots came back in, I pulled mine out from last time they were in, they looked perfectly current again. Good leather footwear is expensive, and for comfort, the hardest items to buy successfully, so why part with them?
Regarding buying quality - my (late ) petite mother wore a size 5 1/2 AA shoe ( US sizing ) . When she found quality shoes in her size , she bo't multiples of that style and / or color ( black heels , white sneakers , etc. ) . When she sold our family home & was downsizing for the move , we asked how many pairs of shoes she had to pack - she admitted to 40 / 50 pairs but we really think it was closer to 60 / 80 !! - beautiful condition , maintained over the years . So many " old " styles came back around & she was wise to that ! Same w/ much of her clothes - quality well cared for . 🥰
I like this channel and often take advantage of Marie-Anne's knowledge and expertise. But the thing I like most is her integrity when it comes to beauty and aging. It doesn't happen very often and I certainly won't be lectured and take one bit of advice from someone who uses toxins, fillers or plastic surgery. I respect their choices but in my humble opinion plumped lips, to mention just one small example, completely disqualifies a person from advising anyone on beauty issues. I don't disrespect anyone and the same would apply to my sister, daughter or best friend.
Excellent video and advice Marieanne❣️I would love to see more of your house, property, and animals❣️💕🥰💕Blessed Christmas and God bless you next year❣️
We as parents must teach our children what quality is. I was fortunate that both my mother and father taught me how to look for quality clothing. Even at 16 years of age I had started building my wardrobe. Yes, I did purcase inexpensive items when my budget wouldn't allow bettter/best items. Bonjour from Victoria, B.C. Canada - JoAnne we can hear! My news paper yesterday had an article about moving toward Slow Fashion. Too many items in our closets un worn.
Thank you Marie-Anne for your expertise and perspective! It would be great to have these livestreams periodically! They are very helpful to have a conversation about some of these topics!
Hello ladies. I noticed a question regarding dry cleaning. Here in California it is not only expensive but the quality of dry cleaning in my experience has been very disappointing and after ruining several pieces I made a change many years ago. I do wear my cashmere sweaters several times using various techniques to keep them fresh. When they need cleaning I use woolite dryer pads. You just place 2-3 similar color items in the dryer with this pad and dry for 30min med heat. I have not been disappointed and have been doing this for at let 10 years. Hope it's a nice tip for all :)
I always miss your live feed. But I’m watching it now, and I had to tell you one thing that I have learned over the years. Quality over quantity. And I know that’s what you teach. I Started to take note of how often I wore something because if I buy something…..let’s just say something for $10 and I wear it once and never wear it again I’ve spent $10 for that one wearing. If I spend $100 on some thing and I wear it 20 times it’s cost me five dollars per wear. So to me quality is what’s important and will I wear it over and over and over. I love your channel so much but I am having a problem with TH-cam unsubscribing me to you. Every time I go on one of your videos I have to subscribe again and it isn’t just you. I have to subscribe on lots of my favorites. I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t know why this happens. I’m enjoying your video, but I had to just share my opinion on cost per wear. Merry Christmas or happy holidays. ❤
Bonjour Rose - cost per wear is a great indicator of quality and versatility 😃 I will check out with YuTube what may be going on - several people have mentioned they are being unsubscribed 😘 all I can do for now is say please keep checking your home feed or my channel page for my videos as I am posting more regularly now 😃
thank you for this afternoon's live stream Marie-Anne, I really enjoyed it and it was great to see so many people from all over the world all interested in slow fashion. I left early because adverts were appearing every few minutes. But no one else has mentioned it so it's probably something to do with my laptop. Joyeux Noel. xxx
Bonjour Steph - as I understand it the adverts are run by TH-cam according to the viewers own metrics. What kind of adverts were they - pop ups or full blown tv adverts?
Hi |Marie-Anne, the adverts were full blown TV type adverts for various items, I don't know exactly as I tried to ignore them, but there were two each time and appeared every 5 minutes or so. The ad breaks got longer and longer as your video continued till after an hour it was difficult to continue watching. But if no-one has mentioned this, I can only think it must be something to do with my laptop and settings. @@MarieAnneLecoeur
Bonjour mme Lecoeur ❤. See what you started ?!! Haaaaa. Thanxxxxxx so much. Be well 🎉.
Have you done a video on accessorizing with jewelry and coordinating it to maintain a chic look? Should your jewelry match your size? If I am a plus size woman, can I wear thinner bracelets or would chunkier look better?
Hello Marie-Anne, I mentioned that I recently found you and was surprised that I found you so far into your TH-cam journey. I have been catching up over the past 2 weeks. Our styles are uncannily similar--structured, masculine feel, epaulets, and scarves. I have 2 full drawers of scarves only. My first job was selling silk scarves in a department store when I was 17. I was motivated to drop you a line because, in one of your videos I just watched on bags, you showed a tiny black clutch covered in little roses...I bought the large version at a flea market last weekend, and I just love it. Pairing pieces is fun but, I have a lot of very good dresses, although I do not wear them enough. I am in the process of buying a long dark red knitted dress, simply fabulous, I think. Could you focus a little on styling dresses? More to come :)
Bonjour Jasmine - I have been on TH-cam since 2011 😃 but only really started posting regularly since 2017 it has been a wild ride 😃 Glad to know my channel resonates with you and yes I would love to do more on dresses but there has been so very few worth buying recently. I hope the return of tailoring will see that change for 2024 😘
Merriest Christmas! I am so disappointed that I missed this while it was live, I am 17 miles into a 30 mile walk and lost track of time. Blessings to you, Marie-Anne!
I have a question, I bought a beautiful navy peacoat by Golden Goose last winter, today, I realized that one of the gold buttons on the front of the coat came off, and the gold button is lost. The buttons are specific to Golden Goose, and I am wondering what I should do about this? Do you think Golden Goose would replace the button? Please help.
I will ask, and I have a plan to take my coat to my Tailor, I think she needs to refasten the buttons again. The stitching of the buttons always looked flimsy to me which made me nervous and sure enough one of the buttons came off, the coat was expensive too!@@MarieAnneLecoeur
I luv your light gray colored t-neck blouse. Funny but true - several years ago, we bought outdoor furniture at a Pennsylvania Dutch outlet. When they delivered to us in NJ, I noticed that they used a light gray t-neck to buffer/cushion the furniture. Well.... It was exactly my XS size. So, I washed it and it's still great and first rate.
I think It’s extremely important to understand the importance of styling. My daughter often see the outfit as a whole product rather then separate items styled certain way to give desired vibes. She then wants to buy it. Of course her budget do not stretch that far ( she’s only 14 ) I really struggle to convince her to save up for quality items, she see them as old ladies stuff 😂😂Too much advertisement. Too much product placements.
It is always difficult to convince the young of such matters but keep sharing and explaining your approach to minimalism and she will absorb far more than she realises 😃
Hello Erna here. I live in the Netherlands. I am 62. My waist has gone over the years. Most clothes look boxy now... QUESTION: how to dress without a waist?
QUESTION. I recently bought two cashmere sweaters on line from a company called Quince. I had never heard of them and was very pleasantly surprised with the price and quality of the sweaters. Have you ever heard of this company? You seem to know quality and I was wondering if you or anyone else "out there" bought anything from them.
I heard about Quince and have purchased a few cashmere sweaters from them. I don't know how to gauge the quality of cashmere as it had always been an item I declined to buy because if the cost and also the dry clean only tags, but these seem to be very nice. They are soft and fit well. Time will tell if they hold up to repeated wear. The price point is excellent!
??? QUESTION Marie-Anne. Since I am barely 5 feet tall, do you feel that true petite pants would give me a better fit than modern pants with a lower rise?
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I just wish more of American women would watch you and learn because we need to bring more class back in the way we dress in America

Good morning from Auckland New Zealand my most pressing question on style is cool underwear for summer, i currently wear cotton underwear however i find these still to hot even while wearing a dress. Would bamboo be better to wear. Love your video clips thank you for your advice. Merry Christmas
I was about to buy a cashmere sweater for $450 but I decided to read the customer reviews first and almost everyone complained about the poor workmanship, the pills, fabric stretched out. I can't even find quality clothes in the USA anymore.

@@stephsmith5969Doesn't the "skip" button show up for you? Most of the time, you can skip ads after about 5 seconds.
Bonjour mme Lecoeur ❤. Aujourd'hui j'ai sorti ma paterre du storage. J'y mettrai mes ensembles que je préparerai la veille de mes sorties. Have you done a video on accessorizing with jewelry and coordinating it to maintain a chic look? Should your jewelry match your size? If I am a plus size woman, can I wear thinner bracelets or would chunkier look better?
I have done a few videos on jewellery Marmeone - proportion is always a consideration 😘
Where did you get the black skirt in the front of your rack in this video? It looks perfect shape and length.
It is by Zara Ellen 😃
Merry Christmas Marie-Anne ❤
And to you Glad 😘🎄
Sorry I missed it, Marie-Anne. Now watching from the UK❤ 🇬🇧

I hope the return of tailoring will see that change for 2024 😘
Awww love the pup in the background ❤ 🐕

I truly enjoyed this program! Thank you.

You can but ask Heidi - failing that try to find some vintage buttons online 😃
That is great cost per wear Ms B 😅
I think It’s extremely important to understand the importance of styling. My daughter often see the outfit as a whole product rather then separate items styled certain way to give desired vibes. She then wants to buy it. Of course her budget do not stretch that far ( she’s only 14 ) I really struggle to convince her to save up for quality items, she see them as old ladies stuff 😂😂Too much advertisement. Too much product placements.
It is always difficult to convince the young of such matters but keep sharing and explaining your approach to minimalism and she will absorb far more than she realises 😃
Miss Marie-Anne darling good live stream and Merry Christmas my Beautiful Teacher l love you 🎄😘❤️
Merci Hector
You're welcome my sweet queen

Hello Erna here. I live in the Netherlands. I am 62. My waist has gone over the years. Most clothes look boxy now... QUESTION: how to dress without a waist?
You need to watch my very next video coming Sunday Erna 😃
Problem with weight gain due to menopause in late 60's so good quality clothes no longer fit ..
I will check them out Patricia thank you for the heads up x
Great talk 👄
🤗
??? QUESTION Marie-Anne. Since I am barely 5 feet tall, do you feel that true petite pants would give me a better fit than modern pants with a lower rise?
True Petite Pants are tailored differently and so should give you a better fit 😃
Im wondering if you still wear a colour even if its not in vogue in a particular season or if you just store those pieces away and wait it out?
I do Jessie - even though pink is out I will be wearing it 😃 and black comes and goes but I always wear it - Stand Out In Your Style 😘
Danke!
Bonjour Barbara that is so very kind of you merci beaucoup 🤗 a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you 🎄

Good morning from Auckland New Zealand my most pressing question on style is cool underwear for summer, i currently wear cotton underwear however i find these still to hot even while wearing a dress. Would bamboo be better to wear.
Love your video clips thank you for your advice.

Hello from Austin Texas USA
I was about to buy a cashmere sweater for $450 but I decided to read the customer reviews first and almost everyone complained about the poor workmanship, the pills, fabric stretched out. I can't even find quality clothes in the USA anymore.
Where were you going to buy it from Karla?

Your advice as usual is wonderful. If I had to resort to putting my clothes on the floor then that would be my signal to "weed" things out.
I think the reason for putting things on the floor is lack of care rather than lack of space Patricia 🙁 but yes if you have no room to store things properly then some pruning is required 😃
