Charlie, I am a great fan. As a 12 year old girl, I find your videos fun and I like to help my dad doing his layout. Keep up the great work. Best wishes. Olivia. :)

Hi Charlie, great video as ever! Thanks for the shout out, it was a pleasure working on your layout in the digital/virtual world of Anyrail. But I'm sure you'll get the most out of working on it in the real world.
As someone who was railway modelling long before anyone had even dreamed of them, I find those laser cutting machines fascinating. All those years cursing blunt jigsaw blades, and now you just put a sheet of plywood in the machine, and out comes something perfect first time! The only thing you missed in this video was a police car with blue lights and sirens behind you, and you saying "That'll be the bobbies, then..."
When the big saw came out I was gob smacked..... Superb new design and work... keep safe Charlie ......Jim. P.s love the drone footage...and amazing to see the laser cutting.
I've pulled off a board from the shop wall which splits the shop in two. It's quarter inch thick, five inches wide and nine foot four inches (112 inches) long. During my watching your video, my mindful wheels started to turn. My watching your videos is starting to turn like, for a car battery with "cold cranking amps"...my locomotivation over, from a dead stop. Two short cabinate hunged doors just got screwed into the inside of a seven foot-four inch window frame, both doors swung away from the window in parallel and holding up that first board. I've started! Thank you! John BC, Canada
Hi there Charlie, from one ex-Navy greenie helo-maintainer (RNZN-Wasp) to another and a fellow railway modeller, having followed your sessions from # 61, 113 is close to being the most radical and enlightening. The rest are great of course, this one is just another step up from those so I look forward to seeing the next few clips and watching the layout really take on operational potential now that you've moved on from the tail-chaser concept (which is still ok!). Thanks for the time and energy you spend in putting the clips together, I enjoy sharing your journey and long live the modular concept... Stay safe and well, Best Regards Brent
Hi Charlie, oh my goodness. I expected to see you with your pipe and slippers on with your feet up enjoying the new layout. Been so busy recently I've missed a few. Last watched the hilarious and interesting No 100 !! Better do some binge watching. Well your club room is getting more cosy. I'll go back and catch up. What a layout this is going to be. I'm beginning to think your wife has got a long list of jobs to crack on with and your reply. Yes love, just need to finish this first. Catch you soon and keep making your channel fun and informative to watch. Regards Gareth
@@ChadwickModelRailway i quite liked the more ‘vloggy’ aspect of it if that makes sense. I use lasercut boards myself and would never go back - they really are a game changer! Please do more of this style! 😀
Your films are always excellent, but this one was especially impressive. Countyfile ! I imagine this new fiddle yard and the helix's (?) is costing you a small fortune!
Great video Charlie! Looks like your going to do your helix the exact same way I did mine but I didn't have access to a laser cutter. I instead made a template and cut out with a jig saw and use it and routed out the remaining cuts. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing how your helix turns out! - Jason
@@ChadwickModelRailway best of luck on the helix build! Feel free to check out some of my layout update videos and that might help you not replicate some of the issues I ran into that I had to fix in order to get it working properly.
Hi Charlie one thing I have found being a bit of a novice is how willing people are to give advice and suggestions and to help when problems occur and long may it continue. I am lookig forward to seeing the track plan come to life. And I too liked the drone footage.....Cheers Kev
Fantastic video Charlie. I bought all my DCC from DCC automation when I converted. You have been inspirational unfortunately that means me ripping up mine and starting again. Good job I love this hobby. Looking forward to progress.
You come across as a nice person, and that's why people will spend time with you or do things for you. Or is it, we feel that you are building US a layout, so we want to help.
The re-design moves the whole layout design concept to another level, it’s becoming a special design which inspires, rather than a tail chaser, thanks for another good video.
my heart was in my mouth when you took a rip saw to the hillside Charlie. Better to make all these massive room changes than compromise your modelling due to knee problems, but what a job ! And who would not want a fiddle yard like that. Even more entertaining than usual. Thanks
Greetings from a brand new subscriber from Wyoming, USA. I absolutely love your videos and production. I am learning how to approach issues on my layout-in-progress -- including a 4 turn, 30-inch radius helix -- with your help. Now to find someone locally who has a laser cutter! Thank you very much!
I am finding these track plan programmes quite useful as I am about to move my 'duck under' layout from a 9ft x 9ft bedroom into a converted 10m x 5m barn. My problem is arthritis of the back so I shall incorporate at lift out section, I'll also be building it in sections that will fit in the back of a Sprinter size van so that if I ever move I can easily dismantle and transport my layout. I've just seen a friend of mine have to destroy his layout which he started about 20 years ago when he retired early and constructed it with no intention of moving. Good luck with the rebuilding.
A very interesting comment Phil. Some advice I have recently received was to use small pieces of track between the board joins. That way if it comes to a house move, it can be easily dismantled. Regards Charlie
Setting the model railway content to one side... the camera work in the episode is flipping BRILLIANT!!!! I forgot I was watching TH-cam for a moment and thought it was a BBC documentary! Shame you didn't slide the saw underneath the hillside to start with though! 😁 Keep up the good work.
Hi Charlie - another classic video - especially when the saw appeared! Really well executed video and enjoyed seeing all the bits being cut by laser for the helix. Cheers Euan
Highly enjoyable and well presented as ever. Only just got round to watching. The design looks fantastic and love the knife and saw weilding. A real cut above and a slice of the best!!
Once again I am lost for words , people are so generous in this hobby, to give time to help with suggestions for track plans is above and beyond. These people should be cherished. I think its going to be fabulous and if it helps the old knees then win, win. Will wait with baited breath for the end product, in the mean time stay safe and keep well. Frank
Brilliant video Charlie impressive drone shots etc Fantastic walk in idea with helix and a brilliantly designed fiddle/storage yard very impressive and great tutor skills A true inspiration for us wannabe modellers Brilliant!
Good stuff - and driving and droning at the same time. Just like the wife. If the room does need the radiator then there are some great low level options available these days - in our walk-in wardrobe we ended up with a radiator seat in the middle of the room - nice piece of oak on top and somewhere warm to sit when debating which pair of sweat pants will be below the desk on today’s lockdown zooms...
Hi Charlie. Great video as always. That looks like an adventurous track upgrade. I hope it all goes to plan and I can't wait to see the end result. I would possibly swap the radiator for a low level one. If the base of the layout is not too close to the top of the radiator, you could cut a piece of aluminium and form a curve in it to make a heat deflector and fix behind the rad prior to fitting of baseboards. You don't want to attract any dampness issues. Hope all goes well. Stay safe and well. Cheers Chris.
Always a thorough highlight of my day or night watching your videos, Charlie. Interesting setup with the Helix. I want to modify my home layout, Devizes (featured on ITV South West in July) to a draw bridge config where the fiddle yard is so I can get into the control area easier. Money and time is the next thing lol 😆. Gauge 1 and G stuff is even more expensive but I could be doing worse things with my money. Great filming once again. You've got such a great commentary voice. Love how you pull things apart because you’ve changed your mind lol 😆 I think all modellers do it including myself 😆 It’s because of your channel I persist with my layout as I’ve said before I’m from the Manchester area but loved the western diesel classes 😄 Keep safe and fantastic watching as always Stevie 😎
Great video Charile you have made good progress i am intrested to see how this project goes and i am glad you have found a design that suits you and yes it will be a long task gluing the sheets of foam track bed to the wood nice video as always.
We all make mistakes or change our minds. To me, it’s the speed of correction that is important rather than carrying on with something that you will never be happy with.
Charlie what a great design and having the Helix Laser cut. I finally started mine and I am cutting each piece with a jigsaw. Also thank you for taking us for the ride, I just love the country side. Looking forward to seeing more, Chris
Hmm - 113 episodes in and Charlie has, um, well a beautiful viaduct, one and a half hills, and a couple of open ended tracks. Oh boy! Hopefully you can (still) do some basic shunting mate? But it's been a brilliant journey so far and suddenly it looks like progress is really being made. The new layout looks amazing and it's going to be great fun watching it come together. But -but - but - all that work coming undone, all that soldering, fitting of point motors, the incomprehensible (to mere mortals) DCC special components, miles and miles of wiring, ouch. Well that has been part of the learning process. Charlie, all I can say is I admire your resolve and determination to get it right. All the very best of luck, and thanks so much for sharing it all, and with such great skill and good humour.
A great comment Chazzy B. I can’t help but change my mind occasionally and allowing the layout to adapt. Hopefully this is the last major change, I can’t take any more! Regards Charlie
Great update. Last time I went to see james all those roads were full of snow. I also remember popping into see you at your local show on the way back from James. Great to see the progress with the helix and looking forward to seeing progress. Stay safe.
Excellent video Charlie, quality camera work, and felt as if we were all there with you watching the laser cutter at work... Only negative I can think of was its too short :) - would love to have seen more. - Don't put yourself down regarding your DIY skills... however best leave the radiator move to a plumber !!
Sir Charlie and Squire James, Absolutely brilliant. The inclusion of Travel and Drone B-Roll shot far and away exceeded my expectations. I am impatiently awaiting the next episode. Your Cheeky Devil, ~Jim
Really happy to see that you are making steady progress on Chadwick. I think that it was a great idea to out source the work on the two helixes. Looking forward to the next video Nick Australia
That was a great video Charlie ! As you said, something a bit different ! Nice to see James too. I visited James about three weeks ago on my way back from holiday in Cornwall, shame you hadn’t made this video before my visit, I spent about five minutes driving around that industrial estate and ended up phoning James before I found him ! I’d gone down primarily to pick up my helix, again a bespoke production to suit my needs. This really is a game changer for getting things like a helix produced - like you Charlie, my woodworking skills are, shall we say..... questionable ? When I found out that James and his team could produce such a great quality product at such an affordable price, it was a no brainer and I placed my order. I was able to create my design in AnyRail 6 and e-mail it to James - so easy ! I look forward to seeing your next video and how you get on with the construction. I’m not ready to start mine yet as I have a bit more railway to build first. So I’m very pleased that you can take on the role of guinea pig 😁 I’ll learn by your mistakes..... 🤣 I’m going to use DCC Concepts track bed and there will be up and down 00 tracks and a reversible 009 track on the inside. Gradient works out at about 3% and the out track climbs as you mentioned Charlie. I’m going to divide the tracks on my four stage helix into one block with two feedback detectors per level as it will be managed through iTrain - another product supplied by James at DCC Train Automation. I may also consider installing DCC Concepts Power Base on the up and reversible tracks on the helix for added traction for any trains that have an issue with the gradient. Well, enough from me ! Cheers Charlie and James 👍
Hello Bryan thank you for your lovely words. We do our best to always help every customer. If you need any advice or help please call or pop in. We always look forward to seeing every one.
What a fantastic comments Bryan. I will certainly become your guinea pig! I will be installing a power base just in case I need one. Stay tuned, regards Charlie
I hope you cleaned and sharpened your wife's carving knife before putting it back in the kitchen (lol). Looks like its going to be a wonderful addition to your layout, can't wait to see the next update. Puts my homemade effort to shame. Always a pleasure and joy to watch tour video's...
Hi Charlie another great video mate I can't wait until next week to see you build the helix and see train running on it Charlie keep up the great work mate stay safe and well goodbye for now clive
Great to see the progress towards the new layout, man that laser cutting machine is very cool, looking forward to seeing the finished helix's installed.
Well, Charlie, thank for your reply regarding the Helix, I thought it was a brand name, as usual a wonderful video and such a lovely talking voice, straight to the point...can't wait for the next vid
A lot of work to make the layout more user friendly and reduce knee injuries, in the end it will be well worth it. My previous layouts all have been 'duck under' but now I am also going to design a walk around setup. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.
Cool footage Charlie, your helix must come close to Joey Ricard’s lightest helix of the world. Am very sure the 3 millimeter ply will prove an excellent and sturdy base. Thanks for sharing.
Fair play Charlie. That’s going to be really interesting to watch the progress. One thing I would love to hear a bit more about is the automatic wheel cleaner. I didn’t know such a thing existed?!
Hi Charlie, I will soon be building my own layout which will include a helix at each end. I have been worrying about how to design and construct the helix without causing me too many issues. I’m so pleased you have put this video out there as it has now swayed me towards leaving it to the professionals so thank you. Looking forward to seeing your updates and the continued build. Regards Dave
Excellent Charlie eagerly looking forward to the assembly video ! The road trip did give me flashbacks to our holiday in Devon this time last year. In the happy pre Covid world cheers
Great vid - thanks Charlie. You chucked almost every tool available at that hillside - did you not think about a chainsaw or maybe a flamethrower?!?? Maybe next time eh?
That is a big hunk!!! I really liked the location piece and drone! :) Nice to get out of the layout room. Great layout design Charlie (and those who assisted) I look forward to how it turns out, great video as always *thumbs up*.
Charlie, You can already tell that the Helix will be a thing of beauty. Possibly to nice to hide. The Laser cutter, we're starting to see very small cutter's enter the market. About 12" x 12" to pre-cut model buildings etc. For the home hobbyist. Being used by the Home Doll's House modellers. These cutters are starting to be looked at by railway modellers. Some articles on how to convert designs into a program for the cutter to use are starting to appear in hobby mags and on line. You can cut window frames with sash bars complete. On a brick building you can set the laser just to cut " bricks" on the surface of the thin ply sheet. then the laser comes back at full cutting depth to cut out the individual parts. As well as house's we're starting to see large building's and warehouse's being laser cut. Didn't the old T.V. add say" Oh,the folks come up from Somerset where the Cider apples grow"? Cheers, Chris Perry.
Hi Chris, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it. Those laser cutters are becoming more prevalent, as many cottage industries are appearing on eBay. Regards Charlie

I'm glad that the pro's change their minds after a few weeks of hard work and rip the thing up......thankfully it's not just me!
I’m so pleased that you’ve found the video interesting Chris. And hopefully it could help the build of your Helix. Regards Charlie
I know what you mean. It always looks great in my head, the actual building, well that's another story.
Great update. Last time I went to see james all those roads were full of snow. I also remember popping into see you at your local show on the way back from James. Great to see the progress with the helix and looking forward to seeing progress. Stay safe.
Thanks Geoff, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Excellent video Charlie, quality camera work, and felt as if we were all there with you watching the laser cutter at work... Only negative I can think of was its too short :) - would love to have seen more. - Don't put yourself down regarding your DIY skills... however best leave the radiator move to a plumber !!
Thanks Malcolm, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the more unusual aspects of this video. Now I must get back to my plumbing!
Absolutely fantastic video, very interesting Charlie.
Thanks Mark, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting.
Amazing Charlie what a star. Can't wait for the next installment
Thanks Bob, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it.
Sir Charlie and Squire James,
Absolutely brilliant. The inclusion of Travel and Drone B-Roll shot far and away exceeded my expectations. I am impatiently awaiting the next episode.
Your Cheeky Devil,
~Jim
What a brilliant comment Jim. I’m so pleased that you’re hooked on the channel! Regards Charlie
Love the drone shots! Thanks for such an interesting show.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Mark.
Really happy to see that you are making steady progress on Chadwick.
I think that it was a great idea to out source the work on the two helixes.
Looking forward to the next video
Nick Australia
Thanks Nick, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video. Regards Charlie
oh, that was cool with the cnc and the shop looks like a really nice place to spend hours just looking at stuff
I think that we all miss a good bit of railway modelling shopping Allan.
Hi James, it’s a pleasure. Look forward to when I can visit again sometime.
What a fantastic comments Bryan. I will certainly become your guinea pig! I will be installing a power base just in case I need one. Stay tuned, regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie, looking forward to the next instalment.
It looks very interesting, I really enjoy your channel and the common sense reasoning you use. looking forward to the next installment. Cheers, Bill.
Thanks Bill, what a heartwarming comment, regards Charlie
Hey Charlie!
Great video likes always :)
Hope you are doing well :)
Also, I love the new layout idea I think it would look amazing!
Fingers crossed VTS.
I hope you cleaned and sharpened your wife's carving knife before putting it back in the kitchen (lol). Looks like its going to be a wonderful addition to your layout, can't wait to see the next update. Puts my homemade effort to shame. Always a pleasure and joy to watch tour video's...
Thanks Barry, you’re far too kind regards
This layout will look awesome when it's done. Can't wait
I’m quite excited to Anthony
Hi Charlie another great video mate I can't wait until next week to see you build the helix and see train running on it Charlie keep up the great work mate stay safe and well goodbye for now clive
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Clive. I’ve been busy gluing today!
The plan does indeed maximise the storage! I look forward to the next installment ..
It’s great to have you onside Brian. Regards Charlie.
Great to see the progress towards the new layout, man that laser cutting machine is very cool, looking forward to seeing the finished helix's installed.
Thanks Chris, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it
Well, Charlie, thank for your reply regarding the Helix, I thought it was a brand name, as usual a wonderful video and such a lovely talking voice, straight to the point...can't wait for the next vid
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it Idris. Regards Charlie
A lot of work to make the layout more user friendly and reduce knee injuries, in the end it will be well worth it. My previous layouts all have been 'duck under' but now I am also going to design a walk around setup. Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the video GO.
Cool footage Charlie, your helix must come close to Joey Ricard’s lightest helix of the world. Am very sure the 3 millimeter ply will prove an excellent and sturdy base. Thanks for sharing.
No Vincent, it’s 12mm ply base.
Fair play Charlie. That’s going to be really interesting to watch the progress. One thing I would love to hear a bit more about is the automatic wheel cleaner. I didn’t know such a thing existed?!
It’s made by Lux-Modellbau. Regards Charlie
I always get sad when I see The Hand Of God removing such beautifully modelled landscapes.
Hopefully for the best Bill.
Regards Charlie.
Are you suggesting, Bill, that Charlie is a God ? 🤔🤣
@@bryanlane62 No, only His hand, God bless you my son
glad to hear that you knee is giving you less trouble, always interesting to see progress at Chadwick no matter what changes they are
Thanks mate, you’re too kind.
A good choice Dave, as I know quite a few modellers who have built their own helices that I’ve had troublesome outcomes. Regards Charlie
Great video again Charlie
Thanks James, regards Charlie
Excellent Charlie eagerly looking forward to the assembly video ! The road trip did give me flashbacks to our holiday in Devon this time last year. In the happy pre Covid world cheers
Thanks Mark, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting.
I am very curious about the construction of the helix Charlie!! Very nice video specially with the drone. Cheers Onno.
I’m glad you enjoyed something a little bit different this time mate. Regards Charlie
Great vid - thanks Charlie. You chucked almost every tool available at that hillside - did you not think about a chainsaw or maybe a flamethrower?!?? Maybe next time eh?
Well that comment certainly made me smile, regards Charlie
Wow, another good video, it’s going to be such a transformation, well done.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it Barry. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
That is a big hunk!!! I really liked the location piece and drone! :) Nice to get out of the layout room. Great layout design Charlie (and those who assisted) I look forward to how it turns out, great video as always *thumbs up*.
Thanks AHJ, You’re too kind, regards Charlie
That 3D attempt was a modern art piece! :D
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it buddy.
Great video Charlie! Loved the variety too, and looking forward to seeing the layout grow 👍
Thanks Edward, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting.
Excellent car Charlie 😃😃🤗
It’s 9 years old now!
@@ChadwickModelRailway A year older than mine 🙂
Hi Charlie, the helix looks a master piece of model engineering..!!! Can't wait to see how each segment is joined and the risers are constructed..😀
Thanks Gary, and all that should happen next week hopefully. Regards Charlie
Great start Charlie, looking forward to the next video! It's good to your passion for the hobby, it comes through in bucketfuls!
regards
Gareth
Thanks Gareth, I’m so pleased that you enjoy the videos.
