I came across your videos which I found entertaining and so I subscribed and started watching from when you bought your boat. I've not caught up to this one yet but on one of them you criticised cruise ship passengers some time 6 years ago which I thought was out of order. Not everyone can afford to sail the world in a yacht and it is the only way some people can see the world and the exotic places that you visit. I've been on cruises and seen places I would never have seen otherwise. I don't know whether you read all these comments but apart from that I find them entertaining, down to earth and also shows people places that they otherwise would never know existed. Keep it up and stay safe!
Barry, wife and I absolutely love your breakdown of your decision making process, where you explain the situation in front of you and the basis of the decision to sail responsibly. It’s a much needed lesson on responsible sailing in such a reckless world.
I agree, Barry is frugal but not reckless. I give him credit on his decision to call for help on his way to Australia. There are far too many cases of people waiting until the very last minute before they send out a distress signal. I'm not sure if he's aware of it or not but he uses the swiss cheese model of risk management. It was on display when he was talking about his life raft along with the extra spare and the dihingey. A second expired life raft is nice to have in addition to the primary just in case. As an example, I carry an extra can of bear spray when I go camping in bear country. It's an older expired one but it still works and it's something I can fall back on just in case. When we're done our trip I can also use that extra can to show people how it's used and they can practice with it. Some of his small tips like putting the boat in gear while it's still tied up to ensure that it will actually go into gear before getting underway are fantastic pieces of advice. Being untied in the wind with no control is a terrible feeling. He also mentioned his ditch bag a few times in previous videos and it's something that I feel like doesn't get talked about on other sailing channels.
Barry, it is amazing to me that you are able to pack so much info into your videos! Sailing/boating information your intentions, etc. The conditions you are operating in and what you are thinking. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for taking me along!!
Wrong time of the season....wind all over the place. Winter is just beautiful in northern Queensland.....westerly winds.. clear skies.... I have been following your journey for a while with interest...May the winds be kind to you...especially if you decide crossing the Indian Ocean towads the Cape. I think the Suez is in question...? Maybe heading to the Philippines?
As there is Gladstone Beach on Trimouille Island, Western Australia, I was puzzled for a while as according to Marine Traffic, White Shadow was located somewhere around Darwin in early November last year.
The reefs off Gladstone are some of the prettiest in the Great Barrier reef. If you can check them out safely I would thoroughly recommend it. May of the cays are sea turtle nesting areas and the coral is lovely.
Barry what an episode glad you safe & sound. The Australian rescue service did outstanding job. Take care happy sailing, Barry. Cotton rules coming from black land where cotton was King.
I can’t imagine how exhausting sailing solo must be. Always good to hear from you, Barry, especially when you’re safe. I hope your holidays were merry and bright. Best to you in the New Year!!🎉😊❤🥳🌎👊🏻🌊
I’m 36 and Barry you provide inspiration love following along with you. I Bought a Flicka 20 recently and look forward to learning to sail. What you are doing seems like a pipe dream with my family of 4 but I love living vicariously through your videos
Barry, I’ve enjoyed your channel for over a year and found you entertains and inspiring but your recent release of ‘Halfway’ is nothing short of amazing. Great tune! I just started my journey in November from San Francisco, now in Mexico. I hope I can sit down with you at some and swap stories over a few beers! Cheers.
After all the years you've been sailing, I'm astonished when you are still surprised the weather forecast isn't as predicted. IMHO, it almost never is correct. 🤷♂️ Thanks for sharing.
Happy New Year from 5000 feet in Colorado - an old Soling /J24 sailor who had Australia on her bucket list. Now I have ‘The Fatal Shore’ and Barry’s videos as entertainment and reality checks !
Wow, Barry, another exciting adventure! It's always a relief to see you sailing safely. Your dedication to solo sailing is truly inspiring, and I can only imagine the exhaustion you must feel. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and a fantastic start to the New Year! Stay safe out there, my friend, with fair winds and following seas.
I've recently discovered your channel and been binge watching many episodes. Really makes me miss sailing. Nothing makes you appreciate good weather and being alive more than being at sea in persistent foul weather lol. I'm at an inflection point of sorts in life where acquiring another boat and taking up cruising again is a desirable possibility so we may cross paths one day if you're still out there. Anyway, stay safe and happy new year! And thanks for this channel!
Happy new year and hope you had a Merry Christmas, Barry. Stay safe out there. Fair winds and following seas. 5:13 I'm not a doctor, so definitely consult with one, but there is really no evidence to link salt and blood pressure. The study that kicked off this myth took rats, selectively bred them to develop a weakness to sodium, and then fed them massive amounts of salt. In other words, they manufactured a link. So don't worry about eating salt, you'll be fine.
There is abundant evidence that decreasing sodium intake reduces blood pressure in humans. A cursory read of any national heart foundation guidelines will explain this and a basic search will bring up many peer reviewed clinical studies. Maybe lay-off the alternative facts and doing your own research 🙄
@@Kitiwake If your body craves salt, give it salt. If you think food needs more salt, add salt. I'm not saying people should eat more salt, I'm saying they shouldn't be afraid of adding salt if they want to.
I follow several sailing channels, but I will have to say, yours is my favorite. Enjoying it very much Barry. Just wondering though, is there any way you can get a camera attached to your head? That way it frees up both hands when videoing. Thank you again.
When I went down to Grenada to take a week long sailing class for blue water boats a few years ago I was amazed at how often you could find yourself on a collision course with another sailing vessel or powerboat (not counting the 2 other class buddy boats that intentionally targeted each other to reinforce the rules for right of passage). I cannot imagine the stress you endured navigating the field of big big boats which of course would win any contact in the ocean. Another great video Barry. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Barry. Happy new year mate. Nice quiet video to start the new year on. Hope you had a comfortable new year, and keen to get back sailing. I’m off to find a pub that is selling pints at a £1 . Wish me good luck.
Are you beginning to look forward to the day when you can just stroll down to the local pub for a daily anchor beer? I can imagine you sitting by the fire swapping tales...i could listen endlessly..ive already binge watched all your videos😊 love your new song and channel...Blessings Barry ❤

I am really starting to like you and your content. Originally, I am embarrased to say, I thought why watch an "old sea dog" guy sailing. But the more I watched it the more I like. Something just better amd I think it is a generational thing. Your gen is simply better in many ways than mine which is so messed up that they cannot act properly in nearly any situation. So nice to be able to relax and watch a normal perosn do normal things.
They call em a "Rash guard" because surfers & boogie boarders wear em whilst catching waves. Bits of sand and such sicks in the wax all over the top surface of the boards. Bare bellied will give you a burning rash and sand your nipples clean off. Their light weight Lycra or spandex like material because other fabrics like cotton get too saturated and too heavy. Don't have to worry with sunscreen with a rash guard either. Like most everything, an actual name brand rash guard from a surf shop will cost ya 60 80 bucks. Can get the same shirt of similar material for 20 bucks elsewhere.
Ahoy, a "Rashy" comes from Rash Vest that surfers used to stop getting wax rash on their abdomen and nipples. Then they went mainstream. Good point is they have max spf. Wearing a lose fitting one is better. I have a dual layer one that breathes well. Fair winds.
Seadog, you need a break from the bloody sea, go and visit Mt Zion in Utah, USA, the most amazing place I have ever seen. The best part is its in the middle of the desert a long way from anything wet.
Hi Barry bad time of year to be up that far on the Aussie East Coast, Cyclone season. That's why your not seeing many other yachts up there. They are all in Brisbane until the end of Feb at least for insurance reasons.

Barry 1. Try a sprinkle of cumin with your eggs. 2. "Plastic" rashguard tops are made for swimming/surfing/diving and anything that involves being wet. They keep you warm in the water as well as giving sun protection. Wet cotton weighs a ton and quickly gets saggy, stretches out of shape and chafes like a bastard. A good rashy is your friend. 3. Good luck with your other channel. I'll check it out. You look suave in the cotton suite and yellow cap in the trailer, but also spookily reminiscent of Harry Dean Stanton in the opening scenes of Paris Texas. 🤣 4. Calm seas and following winds to you mate. Love your work.

We listened to your song and it was great! I did hear the killers though. the substitutes cause cancer and the salt replaces what you loose due to sweating which is plentiful when sailing unless you're up North@@SayWhut276
