Kawhi wouldnt have signed unless clips got another star in pg so that trade was made essentially for the kawhi/pg combo which in hindsight looks terrible but any GM ever makes it at that time. And then it looks even worse cause like others have mentioned, clips let him walk without a sign and trade

yeah i'm surprised they didn't bring this up, I remember an interview, I can't remember who it was but the guy said either the owner or GM said no fucking way i'm giving all that for PG. they had to explain to him that it's not for PG. It's for Kawhi and PG, once he looked at it that way he did the deal. Also this was fresh off the Kawhi toronto chip and PG was 3rd in MVP voting in OKC that year, so basically they got the number 1 and 3 ranked players
A sign and trade is only needed if the player wants big money and the team he's going to doesn't have cap space. The 76ers had the cap space, so they wouldn't willingly hinder themselves giving up assets for no reason.
@GrizzlyX stuff already came out about clips not wanting to kick the tires on a potential sign and trade with gsw and im sure pg wouldve been more than happy to stay on the west coast. Feels like clippers just wanted out of the deal and think they can replace a good % of pg's production with cheaper pieces.
in hindsight it looks fine because Kawhi is an all-time great player, just his knees couldn't hold up

They loaded up twice. Right before Covid yes. But the CP3 Thunder exceeded expectations so they were able to blow it up 2yrs in a row. Took on bad contracts during the tank for assets and rehabbed the players for more assets. That’s why they traded 5 2nd RD picks and got 20+ left lol

To be fair, this is only a bad trade in hindsight. George was coming off a season where he finished 3rd in MVP voting, averaging career highs across the board, and no one knew Shai would become what he became.

Cp3 and Blake will be remembered for their clipper days more than any other Team uniforms they wore. So their Jerseys should be reiterd.
Their tag team revived the clippers franchise. I still remember watching their comeback that playoff series game 1 against memphis Grizzlies. Mo Williams, Bledsoe, Reggie Evas, Kenyon Martin, Randy Foye, Caron Butler, Chauncey Billups made me a fan of the team. No one expected anything from them. But they showed up and showed out.
Id retire Blake but not CP3.
Robert "Tractor" Trailer for Dirk Nowitzki is worst than this trade. The Clippers had to give that up to get Kawhi. Kawhi wasn't coming without PG13. I would've never made the trade because of Kawhi's and PG13 health and Shay had a good season. Doc told Kawhi to give Shay time to develop because he was really good but Kawhi was sold on PG13 so they had to make the deal for Kawhi to come.

This tells you that every trade that has dealt picks or prospects that turned into stars, that’s a large part of that organization specifically. OKC is notoriously known to develop players to their full potential: KD, Russ, Harden etc. Celtics has a great history of being patient & loyal with their players to become something more. Also, to everyone that said the Kobe trade was the worst, The Logo had his hand in that along with this PG trade. I’m sure he didn’t wanna give up SGA cuz that was his best kept secret but couldn’t pass up an All Star like PG.

After the clippers made the trade for Paul Jorge a report came out saying Doc Rivers advised the owner not to make the trade even at the risk of losing Kawai because he thought SGA would a top 5 player in the league. He wanted to build his team around SGA.

But Trae was the sure pick due to his college career (while a big white European player was a question mark). Also, the elephant in the room is that a black point guard might be a better attraction in Atlanta than a White Slovenian.
So it's understandable WHY they made the trade. Also, they got value out of it. Trae is a top 5 PG in the league. He's just not Luka (who has the potential to rival Magic as the best PG ever and top 5 player (if he can find a defensive approach that satisfies his critics but still let's him do his thing on offense).
People forget that the clippers were originally the Buffalo Braves. The bills lost four straight Super Bowls, the Sabres lost a Stanley Cup final on an illegal play, and neither team has won a championship. I think someone needs to let the universe know that the clippers aren’t playing in Buffalo anymore.
The Clippers really went from one of the most hyped teams in the nba ever in recent history, to flaming out completely, having just about zero draft capital till 2030, and gave away a mvp level player in Shai, all in the fve year span of Pat Bev telling Steph that these five years would have been his.

The trade is deceptive because at the time, Kawhi guaranteed he’d sign with the Clips if they traded for PG. So, while they signed KL as a UFA, they really made that trade to get both players.

If Kawhi didn't have such bad knee problems over the last 5 years he would be considered an all-time great player. He will get you an efficient 26 per night with elite defense if his body holds up. And it's not even a "what if" because we've seen what he's capable of doing when he is healthy. 2 finals MVPs and championships.

If you actually looked at the head to head matchups with Gallo and George that year, Danilo actually did well against him. And he's just the AFTERTHOUGHT in this trade. And he was a much better fit with Lou Will and Pat Bev. Now throw in SHAI and 100 picks. Terrible trade.
