ABA Sample Session (cards and chase)

  • Notice how Dr. Kelly remains calm and restates her direction when Paige leaves the table or looks for a reaction by grabbing at the tokens.
Some learners may receive reinforcement or a token for every correct response. Paige is earning a token for several consecutive responses, as some of these questions are known items and are not new for Paige.
Dr. Kelly provided the instruction to “sit down in your chair”, but then altered her instruction to “you can stand or sit, but you must stay at the table”. Choice was provided regarding sitting or standing; and providing choice really goes a long way.
As they are completing the tasks, Dr. Kelly reminded Paige of what they are looking towards (playing chase). Because the preferred activity (chase) requires Dr. Kelly, it may be hypothesized that Paige enjoys and/or finds attention from Dr. Kelly to be reinforcing.
Notice how Paige remains at the table, without being blocked in by the chair or Dr. Kelly. She is free to roam the room. However, Dr. Kelly’s attention and the tasks remain at the table, if Paige were to leave. Ultimately, if she ran from the table, instead of to the table, then we would need to adjust our approach (either increase the potency of the reinforcement -play chase sooner or decrease effort of the demands -ask fewer questions of Paige before playing chase).
This is only one example of what an ABA session may look like. Please recognize that no two learners will learn, and no two instructors will teach, exactly the same way.

This technique is called condition reinforcement and it’s commonly used to teach kids with autism, it was then taken and tried with dogs… a quick google search would’ve told you that. This technique is by far the most effective on kids with autism, there’s nothing wrong for rewarding good behavior.

@@Princessfatimwah I know it may seem unusual… but as a behavioral tech it works so well to teach kiddos this young. A lot of the kids don’t understand “no” or even praises like “good job” or “high five “ and it’s super helpful when teaching them new words…. It nota often about behavior more about helping them retain new information they learn.

A F ABA doesn’t have to be specifically for people on the Autism spectrum. It can be something to help with behavior for any child that needs it regardless of diagnosis. That being said, it may be that this child is high-functioning.

This is a sample video to illustrate some teaching techniques to students or others who wish to learn. This child is a model for the sample lesson. One reason why teachers or others may ask questions someone already knows would be to a) practice fluency, b) being able to bounce back and forth, making discriminations between "who" "what" and "where" questions, or c) to reinforce newly acquired skills. Most commonly, teaching sessions do focus on teaching new content, which is relevant and meaningful for the individual.

ABA is applied behavior analysis, it is a very complex and intense type of science we have to follow in order for our kiddos to really understand and retain information. For instance her allowing the child to “splat the spider” and then immediately asking the child a question is a common technique we use to test if they really understand what we are teaching because even tho the “spider” is a distraction, she was still able to show her therapist her nose when asked, letting her therapist know okay she really does know what a nose is. I know to people this stuff does seem stupid lol but until you work in the field you wouldn’t really grasp our concepts and ways of working. It truly is a life changing and rewarding science though! I love working in it :)
