How to fix Galaxy Note 8, S9, S9+ Not Charging Dead Battery Issue

  • ***UPDATE 2 10/23/18: Push VOLUME DOWN + POWER at the same time to restart your phone. If it has ZERO power it will not restart. Instead, use the wireless charger and leave on there for a while. Then plug in the phone as it's left on the wireless charger at the same time, and do the Volume Down + Power restart. Once it restarts, shut it down immediately and let it charge until 20% minimum. After this procedure, you will be able to see the amount of % charged on screen with the PHONE TURNED OFF.
    *** UPDATE 1:
This dead battery recovery procedure works for Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+
***Here is a recommended wireless charger (use a compatible one): amzn.to/2FUOcJI
This is a solution to getting your Galaxy Note 8 to charge again after the battery is drained to 0%. This is an issue that is now acknowledged by Samsung. They are offering replacements on a case by case basis. The only problem with that is that if you bought a new phone, you end up getting a refurbished one. And that to me is not acceptable. Here is the link: www.androidauthority.com/sams...
Please leave me comments and/or questions below and I will respond to help you fix yours.

You're a lifesaver. My note 8 didn't want to charge on me this morning and kept plugging it in till I thought my electricity went out, but that was not the problem. After you had mentioned that a wireless charger would fix it, it did. I had never really used my wireless charger in years, but as soon as I set it on top, it booted right up and started charging. Thank you so much!!!

I ran across your video and wen to Walmart to get a wireless charger.( couldnt wait to get it from amazon needed it asap) At first it just showed the circle and lighting bolt. Tried this method today and it worked for me! Very clutch man thank you lol. For those of you wondering, you dont need that exact model for the wireless charging part. I borrowed a friends wireless charger and it was one of the round samsung ones and I plugged that into the outlet and placed the note 8 on there then plugged in the actual USB type C charger in while it was plugged into the outlet as well and it slowly charged until the red light at the top left turned on. After it reached about 4% I took the phone off the wireless charging pad and turned it on with the type-c still plugged in and didn't need to boot my phone or anything. Good luck :)

You sir are a life saver! I was driving with a low battery as well and a notification buzzed on my phone, I went to check it, but it was bright out and I couldn't see the screen so I went to turn the screen brightness up and as soon as I did it died. I tried everything, and I mean everything else as I did not have a wireless charger. I tried the volume down/power button, plugging into desktop usb 2.0 over night, the 30 sec charger in 30 sec charger out 20+ times and nothing. I was ready to go to verizon and have them exchange it, but your video convinced me to try the wireless + plugging in method you described. It worked flawlessly the first time and in less than 15 minutes my phone is powered back up and working again and already charged to 13%. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Wow,this really worked for me,at first nothing happened but then after a few minutes a symbol of a lightning bolt inside a circle popped up. I let it keep charging and then red light went back on and then like 20 minutes is was able to start again!!Thanks dude you just saved me like 300.00 bucks!!
    (Steps that worked for me)
1.Put phone on the wireless charger
2.Let it sit there for a few minutes
3.Plug your cord into it while it is on the wireless charger still charging
4.Screen will still be black and look like it's not doing anything.
5.A lightning bolt with a circle around it will appear
6.Let it keep charging on the wireless charger and with the USB cord still plugged in for like 20 minutes.
7.Sometime during the 20 minutes the red light will turn back on and it will charge regularly(Screen will go black again at this time and circle lighting bolt will disappear).
8.Do not mess with the phone when the screen goes black again or attempt to start it at this point, just let it keep charging in like 20 minutes you should be golden!
    Thanks again dude!!

Thank you SO MUCH! I tried a combination of your idea, plus Melissa Bleam's comment below and I can't believe it, but it seems to be working now:) I left it on the wireless charging pad for about an hour, then plugged in the fast charger (that came with the wireless pad I bought) at the same time - then when I saw it was beginning to charge, I took it off the wireless pad (left it plugged in), and pressed Volume Down + Bixby + Power keys at once - and it booted up! Leaving it to charge overnight...hopefully this will take care of the problem. I thought for sure I'd have to get a new phone - which I can't afford right now...You're a life saver:)

Issue with my Samsung Galaxy 8 plus solved.
Thank you very much sir, when this issue happen to me I tried everything to charge my phone, also my warranty expired. I even took my phone to ¨You break I Fix¨ They told me my phone was shot, and the circuit board chip was leaking, they couldn't fix it. I called Samsung and they couldn't do anything for me either, because of my expired warranty. They said I would have to send it to them and it would cost me more then the phone is worth to fix it. I did exactly what u said with the wireless charger and plus phone charging cord, and my phone came back to life. I only had the phone for a little more then a year and I can´t afford to by another one. Thanks again.

You sir are a lifesaver! My note 8 is now charging after following your instructions!
Wish I came across your solution a few months back though- went through the same horror with my s8+. Brought it to Samsung and they diagnosed it as a faulty battery. But since my phone was out of warranty, had to cough up $75 for a replacement. Got it after a week, brought it home, and after a few days IT HAPPENED AGAIN. Brought it back, Samsung said the battery they put in (which was supposed to be brand new) was faulty, and they replaced it again.
BUT IT DOESNT END THERE- got my phone back after another week, used it again for a few days, AND GUESS WHAT?! Thats right! It f***** shut down on me again!!!
Brought it back to them- and this time they say it wasnt the battery anymore but the motherboard, and that to replace that it would cost $300 at least! If it was the damn motherboard, why didnt they see that in the beginning?!?! They returned my phone to me dead and partially open (since I decided not to have them do any repairs on it anymore they are not obligated to seal the unit- how profesional right?!)
Ended up bringing it to a third party specialist, who said they had to replace a chip in the charging system that was missing- probably Samsung intentionally didnt put it back since I didnt have them do any further repairs...not only that, my camera (both front and back) is practically useless since its all blurred and distorted- something that the 3rd party guy says was damaged already when he went to work on my phone.
Looking back now, your hack might have saved me from the very beginning. :(
    BUT SERIOUSLY, thank you man.

Dealing with this problem at 5am is NOT fun I tell you. This is the third Samsung phone, 2nd model I've had do this, (Note 8 now, second device, & before that, the Galaxy S6 Edge+) and without a doubt this is my LAST Samsung phone. The unreliability is appalling!!! Hopefully this charging method works (I think it will) but I'm going to bed lol. (Update: while typing this, it has. Still going to be looking for alternative options!)

I have a note 8 that I have been holding on to since 2018. It happened to me several times, the first being 17 days after I bought it, and the recent one being a couple of days ago. I have tried everything, I almost gave up thinking that my phone has just given up given that it is old. I came across this video and did exactly what you said (and I am not one to follow instructions, ditto) IT WORKED!!!! Thank you so much

OMG, totally works, I was getting tired and frustrated. I've never heard of this problem before so I let my phone die today and when I tried to charge it, nothing... Even the screen was flickering in random spots (weird). I have an old non-fast charging Samsung pad, I placed the phone there for 2 minutes, plugged my regular charger and left them do black magic for about 5 minutes, then I tried the volume down/bixby and power at the same time, and the phone woke up. Get it out the pad and left the phone connected to the regular wall charger. Thank you very much!!

Hi Ricardo, I'm glad you got it to work. With a normal wireless charger instead of the fast charger it may take longer and in some cases not work at all. But I'm glad it worked for you. And doing the reset process with the button combination is also important in some cases. Thanks for the detailed comment!

Hi, your method saved my newborn pics on my S8+.
I believe I drained the battery by not turning off the flashlight (?)
I tried the volume and power on keys, and other keys combinations but no light appeared on the top of phone. Nothing seemed to work to have the phone come back to life.
I took the phone to the Verizon store, they said phone was done and I needed a new one. Then I went to three different cellphone repair shops, left the phone with each one to later receive a call from them saying that they were not able to do anything; claiming that they even tested a new battery in the phone and not even with that the phone turned on (I actually never saw the phone open or a new battery being placed in my phone to test this).
I placed the phone over wireless charger. No light on phone visible.
Maybe 1 hr later I connected the USB fast charging cable. No light on phone visible.
I flipped phone up side down and while on the wireless charging pad I plug / un-plug usb fast charging cable several times. No light on phone visible
I left phone on wiresless charging and connected to UBS fast charging over night. No light on phone visible.
My wife woke me up at 5am and said your phone has green light on!!!
I picked up phone still connected to usb and pushed the On key and the phone showed the image of green battery 100% then I saw the samsung logo and it was all good. All data, pic, videos, apps, everything in there intact.
    Thanks again!!!

I've had this happen to me twice now. After the first time i said I wasn't going to let it die ever again. Well, I had been using it all day, researching a new car and before I knew it it was dead again and doesn't seem to want to turn on again. I've noticed that when I plug it into a charger pack that it turns on the charger pack, so I know that it's not complete trash, there's just some sort of fault in the charging mechanism as mentioned in the video. I haven't tried the wireless charger as I don't have one, but trust me, I will be getting one before the end of the day! I just wanted to add that the first time this happened to me, I had been up all night freaking out that my brand new phone that I already spent way too much money on wouldn't turn back on. When I got up in the morning I tried everything again, including plugging it in in my car on the way to work. Still nothing worked. When I got off work I had planned to go to the local US Cellular store and figure out what the deal was, that's when I started my car and the phone was still plugged in and it out of nowhere started charging the phone. However, I tried this today, plugging it in in my car, then starting the car, but I didn't have the same luck this time around!

Have cracked my Note 8 Phone Screen 5 days ago, this Note 8 was made in Korea.. and I was sent out a Refurbished Note 8 same exact Phone and it was made in Vietnam. I have no Screen Burn-ins and no scratches on it at all The phone looks great and new like and the screen is very great. The refurbished phone is just like the one I have damaged. The only thing is that I had to pay a Deductible of $199.00 and the phone was in my hands within 3 days. If there's a problem with the Refurbished phones then I guess I got lucky because my refurbished one is New like.

UPDATE: I just had this same problem this morning Oct 2018, woke up to dead phone (left on low % and Power saving mode on, overnight). My phone WOULD light up when I plugged in my charging cable but I just got a circle with a lightning bolt. Power button would not work. What ended up working for me:
1.) Place phone on wireless charger (make sure blue light on charger comes on).
2.) After 10 minutes or so on wireless charger, plug in cable charger WHILE leaving the phone on the wireless charger.
3.) After circle with lightning bolt comes on, leave for another 10 minutes then press POWER and VOLUME DOWN for 7 seconds.
    4.) Profit.

Thanks for this information. I had sent my phone into Samsung since it was still under warranty. They claimed it was water damaged on the power port, even though they opened it up and there was no water damage on the inside. They wanted to charge over $500 to replace the motherboard. While my phone was away for 2+ weeks, I had to purchase a Pixel 3XL. Samsung returns my un-repaired phone and I tried this trick the moment I got it back. I was surprised that it worked so easily. The white charging notification showed up right and I just left it untouched to charge over night. After calling Samsung many times and just dealing with them making me think I had damaged my phone, I think I may look at other options before Samsung. I've always loved Samsung but this whole experience was just bad.

@@The143getatme do you you have a wireless charger and is it compatible? Make sure it is. Also buy a new cable. They are faulty. Many people had that problem including my self. Also do the button combo for reset sequence.

This fix workes! You need to be patient for starting it up. It will show you logo and then black for multiple times and then suddenly it starts up. Then take it off the wireless charger and let it load for a while. Do not unplug it! Cheers William! It was a lifesaver
