Defence Against the Dark Arts really got to Remus Lupin.
Chilling. We were taught those lessons soon after the play is set - just two years later the Great War broke out.
+Will St Clair It was written just after the second world war when there was a great sense of comradeship between people, especially in Britain. The NHS was formed soon after for the same reason based on the Inspector's reasoning here. "Never again" is the motto of many anti-fascist groups for this reason. Mostly because people wanted to care for each other to never allow that sort of selfish, destructive abandon happen again. Priestly was essentially speaking the mood at the time which is why this play is so popular...that and it's well written.
+Fluffy Kat I find it remarkable that the British were able to implement the NHS so soon after the war ended, even though its economy was in shambles. Here in America things are different -- we have the economy, but the will to provide affordable health care for our people is lacking.
weylguy It's part of the weird tradition Americans have that government being small and ineffectual is the best thing ever. You might as well not have a government if it's doing nothing for the people it governs.

But let's be honest the most underrated actors / actresses usually are the best for example Tilda Swinton and Christoph Waltz, I realise they've both won Oscars but usually go for more art house / auter type films which usually don't apply to the masses
I adore the fact he doesn't shout this. Its spoken with resent which told them they were adults who can be held responsible.
I passed my English GCSE almost 4 years ago, but i still come back to this movie and this scene. Still hits home and is one of the few things I ever enjoyed even though I had to study it.

“There are millions and millions of Eva Smiths and John Smiths” now Smith is a common name, so what this means there are many people out there like Eva Smith. So if u can’t help one why not help another. Eva Smith is a symbol and represents everyone like her in those days. Also never refer to the movie always refer to the novel. One more thing what my teacher told me is that Priestly is talking through the inspector as himself saying we need to look after one other. A VERY VERY GOOD POINT IS the inspector is called “Goole” now that is another word for ghost and the inspector in the play is kinda like ghost no one knows who he is, where he came from, where he’s going next. If you remember Mr Birling calls up the police department and ask if they know a Inspector Goole they say no...

Regardless of who wins this election, this nation isn't headed in the right direction. If we think that things are going to get better and that mankind is going to solve this problem, then we are deceiving ourselves. Scripture records otherwise. The only hope for this nation and others is JESUS CHRIST.
Interestingly, Jesus compares the proximity of his Return to a woman in labor. As the labor progresses the pains increase in both frequency and intensity until the baby arrives.
Likewise, all that we are witnessing in our nation will increase with frequency and intensity. Mass riots, government uprisings, mass shootings, earthquakes, extreme weather... Jesus Christ is coming.
The fear of GOD has become a despised doctrine. But it is the fear of GOD to which we must return---not to get America on its feet, but to get it on its knees!
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

This was excellent, saw the play at the theatre recently, setting it more towards the 40's misses the point of this speech totally.
The play was set in 1912 though??

The most incredible scene ever!
I absolutely adored this novel. It has such a captivating and moving message. I also love the use of cyclical structure. How with Mr and Mrs Birling’s unwillingness to change impacts the novels progression. Therefore, History repeating itself is a product of what would happen if society didn’t change! Truly truly captivating! 🤍🤍
it has glaring holes if you don't get sucked into its socialist propaganda. The inspector is purely biased and the message although fairly good is executed really stupidly.
It's a play, meant to be performed on stage, not a novel.

Originally watched this film for my English literature gcse but would definitely watch this again anyway - I really enjoyed it!
I believe that Inspector Goole is the Angel of Death, doing something more then just taking a life for God. Probably, God told him that one family needs to take some responsibility for a death that will occur, so, the Angel does as God commands.
Happy Industries while it is plausible, the inspector, and rather Priestley himself, were/are both humanists. This means that they believe in morality that has evolved through an evolutionary sense of community, rather than it being God given. It is also speculated that the fact that there is that phone call at the end is actually Priestley's idealistic way of punishing the Birlings and Gerald for their lack of responsibility and their laissez-faire individualism

I believe the inspector was a ghost of the future this would explain the need of speeding everything up when he’s talking to the Birling family and Gerald Croft, this would also explain the ending of the play and his knowledge of the situation beforehand

One commenter noted that the ending, being different from the play, ruined the mystery of just who or what the Inspector represents. Having read the play, posted this video and watched four versions of it, I respectfully disagree. While Priestley suggests the Inspector is an avenging angel or compassionate ghost, I believe that he really wants us to play the part ourselves as an equally compassionate but distant observer. The point of the play is not to wonder who the Inspector is, but to motivate us against the dispassionate, heartless soul of modern capitalism.

Really great story when a police inspector one evening in the early 1900s knocks on a wealthy familys door to tell them a tragic story about a poor girl who they all have a part in. This was a superb story from the beginning to the end. 👍

What is so incredible is how the inspector explained how man was responsible for each other and what they do can affect others. There is an omniscient tone given in this scene which gives the idea that the inspector is almost like a god. How ironic is it to find out that the exact same actor played as Ares in wonder woman with the desire to destroy man. Maybe after 1912 and the first and second world war started, Ares (inspector) decided to teach that lesson of responsibility. Sounds like a fun conspiracy.

I studied AIC for my GCSE English Lit (like 99%) of those here. This fucking play... I was glad to see the end of it! David Thewlis is criminally underrated though- he’s fantastic and really made this adaptation the best I’ve seen
This is currently on Iplayer, and I've so far seen it three times. David Thewlis gives a mesmerising performance as Ghoole, but he has great support from Richardson, Stott and the younger cast. I vividly remember seeing the Alastair Simm version years ago, but I honestly think is is actually better. Spine tingling.

Does anyone know where I get watch or buy a DVD of the 1982 BBC adaptation with Bernard Hepton and Nigel Davenport? For me it is the best version and, perhaps more importantly, sticks almost word for word to Priestley’s original script. It used to be on TH-cam but has now vanished, and I haven’t been able to find it anywhere.

I always thought of this scene as more sad and less dramatic. Rather than the the dramatic and bold music imply s. Just an opinion though and I'm not mad at them having their own vision.

In both this film and the 1954 version with Alastair Sim I saw the Inspector as a kind of avenging angel, giving the antagonists a chance to reflect on and atone for how they had mistreated the girl. It worked for Sheila and her brother, but the others had to be taught a stiffer lesson.

You're thinking of the 1954 film, in which Gerald goes out for a walk and encounters a burly sergeant, who assures him there's no Inspector Poole on the force. In the 2015 film (around the 1:10:58 mark), Gerald suddenly thinks it strange that Inspector Goole didn't take statements from them, and from there they all begin to suspect it was a hoax.
